Ubuntu :: Modprobe, Framevuffer, Udevadm, And Blkid Causing Slow Bootup In Lucid?

Sep 1, 2010

my brother's computer is pretty slow, but was working fine with ubuntu karmic, but I decided to finally upgrade him to lucid the other day, and recently his bootups take, at worst, 10 minutes, when in karmic it took way less. It just sits on a blank screen (not even a blinking cursor)

His pc's specs are:
1.4 Ghz processor (single core)
on-board graphics (no graphics card)
two hdd's one 80GB and one 150GB (the 150GB is split into 3 partitions)
465.7MB of ram 4.1GB of swap

I've attached his bootchart and it seems that Modprobe, Framebuffer, udevadm, and blkid are taking the most time to load, but I dont really know, i'm new to linux. Also how do i disable bootchart now that iv'e used it. p.s Heres he same bootchart just in case the one attached gets shrunk by ubuntuforums [URL]..

Ubuntu Networking :: 2 NICs Causing Very Slow DNS Lookups?

Jul 9, 2011

I'm running Ubuntu 11.04 and I'm really new to linux. My problem is that whenever I try to browse a site I notice the website loads very slowly because it takes a long time to do lookups. I installed Ubuntu with an onboard NIC and later switched to a PCI NIC (Dlink DGE-530T). Although I disabled the onboard NIC in the BIOS, it doesn't help. Could this conflict in configuration be a problem? My download rates are fine, its just lookups that take really long ( upto ~ 10 seconds). I know the PCI network card is fine because when I jump to Windows 7, lookups are normal again (~ 300ms). At first I thought about installing the sk98lin drivers for the PCI NIC but I saw a couple of places where people have mentioned that the skge driver that comes along with the kernel is better.

I have tried a system wide as well as Firefox disable of IPv6. Here is my /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules
Code:
# PCI device 0x1186:0x4b01 (skge)
SUBSYSTEM=="net", ACTION=="add", DRIVERS=="?*", ATTR{address}=="00:24:01:14:eb:39", ATTR{dev_id}=="0x0", ATTR{type}=="1", KERNEL=="eth*", NAME="eth0"
# PCI device 0x10de:0x0373 (forcedeth)
SUBSYSTEM=="net", ACTION=="add", DRIVERS=="?*", ATTR{address}=="00:1e:8c:3e:19:ed", ATTR{dev_id}=="0x0", ATTR{type}=="1", KERNEL=="eth*", NAME="eth1"
The interface I want to use according to the listing above is the one with the MAC - 00:24:01:14:eb:39.

I tried removing one of the entries in the file above and rebooting but it still didn't work. Here is a look at my /etc/network/interfaces
Code:
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback
# The primary network interface
auto eth0
iface eth0 inet static
address 192.168.1.10
gateway 192.168.1.1
netmask 255.255.255.0
network 192.168.1.0
broadcast 192.168.1.255

Ubuntu :: Extremely Slow Bootup In Karmic?

Feb 26, 2010

I know this has technically been posted but I think my situation is a bit different. People have been complaining that karmic is slower to boot. But from what I gather, it's only a few seconds extra due to an extra splash screen. I'm running Ubuntu Studio and mine takes like 5 minutes and is showing me 3 splash screens! 2 for regular Ubuntu and 1 for studio, which is the most sluggish of the three.

My computer is a Toshiba Satellite A75
2.8 ghz pentium M
1.5 gb ram
Radeon graphics
60gb hdd

EDIT: Also, recovering from hibernate takes a few min. Related?

Ubuntu :: Slow Bootup (Toshiba NB305) 10.04 Netbook?

Sep 29, 2010

After running Ubuntu Netbook off a USB for a while, I decided to format completely and install Ubuntu as the main OS. Except now the bootup is incredibly slow. Once I start the computer it goes to a black screen that resembles the Terminal. I have to wait 5-10 mins to get it completely booted up. Again, if I run it off the Ubuntu USB over the installed Ubuntu, the USB one is much faster.

Ubuntu :: Startup With 10.04 - Lucid - Bootup Has Started Taking Longer Than Usual ?

Oct 4, 2010

I've been running 10.04 (lucid, Kernel Linux 2.6.32-25-generic, GNOME 2.30.2) for about 3 or 4 months and everything has been great, until yesterday.

All of the sudden, bootup has started taking longer than usual and the panel at the top of the screen with "applications", "places", etc. doesn't appear until the machine has been running for at least 2 minutes.

Also- the mouse and keyboard (and my external hard drive), all of which are usb, do not respond until about 2 minutes after startup appears to have finished.

So, basically, here's what happens when I power the machine on:

1. Everything functions quickly, and as normal, until my desktop picture shows and the icons on it appear.

2. Whereas before I would have had mouse and keyboard use (and use of the top panel with applications, places, etc.) at this point, I don't have use of any of these.

3. So I just wait, without keyboard or mouse, etc. for about 2-3 min and all of the sudden the top panel emerges, the mouse and keyboards start working, and then the external hard drive appears.

4. As if this weren't annoying enough, after everything above starts to work, opening applications (e.g. firefox) takes a lot longer than it used to. Basically, starting any application after startup takes a long time the first time it's opened.

I don't understand why this is happening. Before this, startup was super fast, and everything was working great. I dont know how to check into recently loaded updates, but perhaps something got changed there that is causing the problem.

I haven't changed anything hardware related at all, so I don't imagine the change in performance is due to anything on that front, but I could be wrong.

Ubuntu Installation :: Console Output Stops During Bootup (ubuntu 10.4 Lucid)?

Aug 6, 2011

After upgrading from Ubuntu 9.10 to 10.4 the console output stops during bootup at various points (during init final scripts processing and when the tty1 auto login). This is a colinux environment but has nothing do with the problem as it is the same version of colinux kernel that works correctly with 9.10 but exhibits the problem with in version 10.4 Lucid.

when tty1 using mingetty auto logs in the .profile file starts the gnome-session (command: DISPLAY=$DISPLAY dbus-launch gnome-session &) and when the panel comes up the shutdown button is disabled when it should be enabled.

However, if during the bootup when the console output stops, I immediately toggle to virtual console 2 (tty2) and immediately toggle back to virtual console 1 (tty1) it restores the output to the console and when bootup completes the gnome panel has the shutdown button enabled as it should be. Some times when the console output stops it looks like a screen clear was issued and other times the lines remains an the screen. I added --noclear to the line that calls mingetty in /etc/init/tty1.conf but is has no effect.

I have set my Grub to select my default OS (Lucid lynx) after 3 seconds and which it does. But after that a black screen with blinking _ is displayed for sometime before Ubuntu loads with its splash screen.

I wonder what caused this? It was not the case before when ubuntu splash appeared almost immediately after Grub menu.

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgraded From 8.04 - Lucid: Login Slow?

Sep 28, 2010

Upgraded from Hardy where all worked fast and the only annoying bug was a total freeze every so often. So I thought it would be good to go to the next LTS version and see if it works better. However it is very slow starting up. bootchart reports 2:44 min compared to 40 sec for Hardy and that is only the start-up. Then the real drag begins after you enter your password. It's been up to 30 min!!! before the system became responsive and did not have a solid HDD light.

So my question is where do I start troubleshooting. I'll include the bootchart and dmesg log. What else is needed to tackle this issue? I'm really in a tizzy here, since it's my wives laptop and she is not as patient as I am, to put it mildly. Do I need to downgrade back to Hardy

Sometimes is gets slightly faster and I can browser a bit more, but then the speed goes down again, to barely useable. I have also setup the modem in xp and whatismy.com speedtest shows 900+kbps constantly. I did a clean install of lucid on my compaq presario cq60 laptop. Ubuntu Servers :: Lucid Slow Throughput To Windows Machines

Jun 16, 2010

Having finally got Samba shares and printer shares working on my Lucid Lynx server, I've noticed that the throughput from/to those shares is very slow to what I was used to when I had those shares on a W2K server.Having Googled this problem, I noted that there was a known issue with this in Karmic (believe Brian Wu was looking at it). However, I don't see any results in Google as to this being a problem in Lucid.

I know ipv6 can cause a problem in this regard but having issued the command:
lsmod | grep inet6
I know that ipv6 is indeed disabled on my Lucid server. Any further information on whether the error reported in Karmic still applies in Lucid, and can this be addressed in any way?

Ubuntu Networking :: 10.04 Lucid Lynx Network WiFi Slow Speed

May 18, 2010

A lot of people have the problem to find themselves with Lucid Lynx 10.04 and experience massive issues when connecting to wireless - me too. As a service, here some relevant links which promise relief:

[code]...

I tried all of them, and none reliably worked. Every solution which required re-association wtih the AP helped for some time, but nothing helped for long. First, don't let yourself fool by the disable IPv6 trap - while it is "enabled" it is acutally not used by Lucid! I have a clean install of Kubuntu 10.04 on an AMD64 Laptop with Broadcom STA driver: 03:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4328 802.11a/b/g/n (rev 03) However I can reliably stabilize my connection for some time either by manually disabling WiFi with the hardware switch or disabling WiFi by software means and re-activating. This brings speed at par with Kubuntu 9.10 until some time. Can anybody confirm this behaviour?

Ubuntu Installation :: Compiz Slow In Lucid Kernel - Run Normail In Karmic

One things that remains until today is that when I'm using latest kernel (right now 2.6.32-24), the compiz run very slow, make the whole desktop unusable. When compiz is killed and using metacity, the desktop is running in normal speed.

Fortunately I still had the Karmic kernel (2.6.31-20) and booting using this kernel, everything run normally.

I just wonder what cause the latest kernel make compiz become slow. Is there any leftover application that I had to uninstall (maybe it's like pulseaudio's problem above), or any missing library/application that I need to install?

Ubuntu Networking :: Lucid Wireless - Web Pages Consistently Slow To Load

Performed clean install of 10.04 (lucid) onto a brand new hard drive (July 2010) - fwcutter driver. NO issues with wireless in 10.04 (lucid) until a few days ago, when. my laptop shutdown because the battery died and I safe-upgraded to 2.6.32-24-generic. Currently I have chronic wireless connectivity issues - slow to non-existent. Ping tests (ping -c6 google.com or ping -c6 4.2.2.1) sometimes reveal 0% loss, sometimes 100% loss, sometimes "unknown host" - within 5 minutes of each other. Regardless of ping results, web pages are consistently slow to load. Skype will also cut out from time to time as the wireless connection vacillates. I have a MacBook Pro which I am using as my (wireless and consistently well-connected) control - and from which I am currently forced to draft this note.

Since "upgrading" (ha!) to lucid I have had a number of problems that I am working my way through. The latest is accessing samba shares from a Win7 PC. It takes minutes to open the requested share from the Windows 7 PC. File transfers, once the directory is accessed, can be measured in bytes. It is an absolute trickle.

AFAIK the smb.conf is unchanged and, in any case, there is no problem accessing the shares from another linux PC.

Ubuntu Installation :: Cannot Boot After Update - Udevadm - And No Chroot Command

Dec 20, 2010

I installed Ubuntu Netbook Edition 10.10 on my Eee PC 901 (the one that has 2 SSD's). It all went fine, and I ran the update manager straight after install and config. It installed the updates (all 198 of them!) without error. I was prompted to restart, so I did. I got the error "udevadm trigger is not permitted while udev is unconfigured". I found out that this error is well documented, and I followed the guide at [url](apparently it affects all variants, not just UNE).

It went O.K., until I tried the command "sudo chroot /media/newroot". I got the error that "cannot run command '/bind/bash': no such file or directory". What should I do?

I cannot boot into and earlier kernel (problem/current one is 2.6.35-23-generic) I can only fix it via live USB stick.
