Ubuntu :: Noisy Sound - Possibly Fan - Kubuntu 10.10

Dec 4, 2010

I'm a bit concerned about this. I've installed Kubuntu 10.10 tonight, and had tried it a week ago briefly without updates. Both times I've had this really loud sound which I'm guessing is the fan going a bit mad. Is this related to a newer kernel or something? Is it dealt with easily? This is a Toshiba Equium laptop from 2 1/2 years ago. I've got the Powersave setting on now in the hope this might stop it happening while I'm trying to read up on this and get advice.

After all the observed Linux progress since I've been using it I'd be quite annoyed if something botched in the OS kills my laptop. The computer got quite hot, even though its feet are rested on a wooden board that normally prevents this.

I've changed the power preferences, and activated the option: "Spin down hard disks when possible", but didn't have any effect.

I have a toshipa satellite L-500, and used to use toshiba eco utility for windows but they don't make that for ubuntu.

Ubuntu Installation :: Noisy Pc. + Graphic Not Working?

Jan 22, 2010

I have recently installed 9.10 on my pc. All seems ok except there is a lot of noise coming from the tower now. It sounds like one of those old dial up modems that computers used to have. It starts right after the ubuntu starts. On the first install I had vertical lines on the screen that would become more broken the busier th computer was.So I installed again selecting to use lower graphics mode before installation. The lines have gone but I can't use avant window navigator as I get an error message saying the screen hasn't been composited. It invites me to use compiz to do this but a really can't see how. Also it won't let me select visual effects in appearance preferences. The most annoying thing is the noise like an old modem is constantly trying to connect to the web.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: No Sound For Flash Video In Firefox - Kubuntu 10.10

Nov 6, 2010

I am having a problem getting sound to work in flash-videos in Kubuntu 10.10. My system currently has two working sound cards, the one integrated into my motherboard and the other is a USB Logitech headset. After installation, the speakers were set as my default output device which I did not want. I was able to move all the sounds over to the USB headset using phonon. While Amarok works, videos work (downloaded, wmv, avi, divx, etc) I cannot get flash video to work in Firefox. I set up my prefered device as the USB headset for everything in Phonon, but still the sound will only come out of my integrated soundcard (speakers). I'm not sure what exactly I am missing, I set everything up, but still it's a no go. What switch did I miss? I haven't used Kubuntu for a while, but i'm pretty sure this worked fine in Ubuntu 9.04 (when I last used it).

Ubuntu :: Sound - Control Volume Of Each Channel Manually In Kubuntu 10.04?

May 25, 2010

I think my question os quite silly, but yet, I can't figure out how to fix it. I had Debian Lenny installed on my laptop. While in Debian, i could control the volume of laptop speakers and headphone in separate channels. So, i could, for example, play a music in laptop speakers and in headphone, at same time.

In April, I've migrate to Kubuntu 10.04. I cannot do it any longer! There are no two separate channels in KMix. Everytime I plug headphone, it redirect the audio output from speakers to heaphone, and when i take the headphone out, it puts taudio output back to speakers. How can I control volume of each channel manually in Kubuntu 10.04?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Record Sound In Kubuntu 10.04 - Default Device For Audio Recording Does Not Work

Jun 28, 2010

I have detected some problems when I try to record sound in my Kubuntu 10.04 system.

The problem is that the "default" device for audio recording does not work but I have to select another device to do so. I always selected the "default" device for audio recoding but currently I have to select hw:0,2 device.

Another odd thing is that different programs show me different device. For example, Audacity shows me that I have the following audio recording devices:

- HDA Intel: ALC888 Digital (hw:0,1)
- HDA Intel: ALC888 Analog (hw:0,2)
- spdif
- default

The only one that works is hw:0,2.

But arecord shows me (when I execute "arecord -L") the following:

Finally, in KDE system preferences for audio I get that I have 2 different audio devices for audio recording:

- HDA Intel (ALC888 Analog): it is said that it will try first x-phonon (CARD=0, DEV=0) and, if the latter does not work, it will try plughw (CARD=0, DEV=0)

- HDA Intel (ALC888 Digital): it is said that it will try first x-phonon (CARD=0, DEV=1) and, if the latter does not work, it will try plughw (CARD=0, DEV=1)

Where is the hw:0,2? and how can I set the alsa system to use hw:0,2 as the default device for audio recording?

All of that would not be a problem but I also have an ubuntu 9.04 installed on a virtual machine (by using virtualbox) and audio recording doesn't work there. I suppose that it is becase of the virtual sound card is using default devices for playing and recording audio.

I must say that audio playback works fine in both host and guest systems. It is just audio recording.

Debian Hardware :: Ralink RT2501 USB WiFi Adapter Hot And Noisy - Wheezy Freezes

Sep 14, 2014

I've just installed Debian Wheezy on my old Toshiba Satellite A10 (Intel celeron 2.20 GHz, 1GB Ram, 30 GB hard drive) and tried to connect to my home wifi network with a usb wifi adapter (Hamlet HNWU254G). lsusb in terminal says it is Ralink RT2501. Ethernet worked fine, so I installed firmware-ralink package, the adapter was recognized and I was able to connect.

However, I heard quite frequently a strange whistle and realized it came from the usb wifi adapter; it also got very very hot. Other strange thing: the computer some times freezes: screen flickering, loss of control of mouse and keyboard, need to shut down with power button.

At first I thought it was the video card not being powerful enough for Gnome (even classic), but then I installed Xfce4 and nothing changed. Instead, when working offline, freezes happen less frequently (but still happen).

I've tried the usb adapter on another laptop with wheezy: it gets hot, but there are no whistles and freezes.

Ubuntu Security :: Replacing A Possibly Compromised OpenSSH Key?

Sep 22, 2010

I'm concerned that my SSH key may have been compromised and would like to replace it.

I tried replacing keys before and reinstalling OpenSSH and SSH before but ran into terrible trouble so I'm asking for instruction before touching anything this time.

Code:

authorized_keys id_rsa id_rsa.ppk id_rsa.pub known_hosts
Code:
laeg@skyrocket:/etc/ssh$ ls

So can I just synpaptic 'fully' uninstall SHH (although probably even less necessary than..) and OpenSHH, backup sshd_config, delete the two dirs referenced above, reinstall both packages, insert my sshd_config backup, and then start from scratch following the guides linked below?

Ubuntu :: Wont Boot Possibly Because Of Picasa Install

Feb 13, 2011

I have an HP laptop. I had Ubuntu 9 running perfectly for months and now it won't boot at all. When I start the computer it begins with the BIOS screen (and option to enter startup/boot menu). Then, that's it! Black screen, no matter how long you wait. I am running Ubuntu live off of a USB stick so I know all my hardware is fine.

When it crapped out:
I was doing basic things such as I had Gedit, FireFox and Chrome (for emails) running. I wanted to do some image, batch edits and after googling a bit decided to install Picasa. The install seemed fine and I had Picasa up and running. All of a sudden a text file I wanted to edit with Gedit gave me an insufficient permissions error warning.

I do not remember exactly what I did from there but basically I closed out everything and shut down the computer, it hasn't booted since.

I really don't want to have to reinstall/reconfig my whole computer again. However I am not all that savvy with computers let alone Ubuntu, so if it's going to be a long, drawn out process trying to recover...

Ubuntu Servers :: OpenLDAP Possibly Starting Too Late?

Apr 12, 2011

I recently followed a tutorial on how to get OpenLDAP running with Samba on Lucid. It worked pretty well. Here's my very frustrating problem with it. For the first 5 - 10 minutes after rebooting, password handling (possibly PAM?) is hosed, including for users in LDAP authenticating via Samba. In fact, I think the only reason I can SSH into the machine during that window is because I happen to have certificate authentication enabled and my client uses that. When I try to do a sudo command after logging in, though, and have to enter the password, it hangs. I've searched logs and haven't come up with much.I *think* it's related to this bug, but I'm not sure. And here's what's killing me ... it's not easy for me to figure out how to ensure that slapd starts before smbd and rsyslog (I read somewhere else that it needs to start before that for some reason) b/c most of the jobs are upstart jobs, but slapd is not.By default it runs at S19 in rc2.d, and I've tried manually lowering that as far as S05 or S07, but I'm still having trouble.
