Ubuntu :: Lucid - Wireless Mouse / Keyboard Are Dead

May 19, 2010

I have tried Lucid on two computers. Wireless mouse and keyboard are DEAD. Even the server version (before the desktop is installed) ignores them. If I connect a wired mouse or keyboard they both work fine.

Ubuntu :: Restore Dead Mouse And Keyboard Input From Live Cd?

Jan 1, 2011

how I restore dead mouse and keyboard input from the live cd. Basically what happened was I was updating the machine and decided to let them run in the background while my sister's 6 year old son played some tux computer games, when he was finished he switched the entire computer off at the power button and it was still updating in the background. Now there is no mouse or keyboard input, I cannot get into the recovery console, nor can I control a terminal from the login screen in order to successfully complete the update. This means basically the only option to fix it would be to re-install or fix the human user interface device drivers (keyboard and mouse) via the live cd, I am in need of some advice or instructions on how to go about fixing this issue.

My previously installed printer has been removed automagically. Boo. So far I have:

aptitude purge cups
aptitude install cups

Which has made absolutely no difference.

Ubuntu Installation :: Dead Keys Not Working In Emacs [Lucid]

May 4, 2010

I'm having trouble with dead keys in Emacs on Ubuntu Lucid and I'm at my wits' end. Using a standard Norwegian keyboard layout, and dead keys work fine in all Gnome applications. But Emacs just spits out messages about undefined keybindings when I use dead key combinations, for instance for tilde (~): "<dead_tilde> is undefined". This is super-annoying, since I use Emacs a lot, and I need some way to fix this.

What I've tried so far: Loading the 'iso-transl' library in Emacs seemingly makes the dead keys work, but it's not consistent across modes (works for plain text, though), and I didn't need to do this before. Also, loading this breaks Emacs' latin-1-prefix input method, for some reason. Fiddling with keyboard-preferences, iBus, im-switch xim/none/ibus, etc. Removing ~/.xinput.d directory. Fiddling with various environment variables: GTK_IM_METHOD, GTK_IM_MODULES, XMODIFIERS

Of course, I'm testing this in Emacs started with '-Q' to elminiate problems that might be caused by my own rather extensive set of initialization files. Using dead keys in Emacs has never been a problem until I upgraded to Ubuntu Lucid.

Ubuntu Networking :: Wireless Card Just Seems To Be Dead?

May 15, 2010

I am in need of some help trying to get my wireless working. I have a compaq presario f557us and my wireless card just seems to be dead. I got this laptop a few years ago and I tried installing ubuntu 7.04. The wireless part did not work out of the box (it took a lot of tinkering but finally got it working by using ndiswrapper). Later I did an OS reinstall but tried ubuntu 8.10 this time and the card was recognized with no problems, I just needed to use the proprietary drivers that ubuntu recommended. Finally I decided to give 10.04 a try. I don't know if doing an "apt-get upgrade" would've been fine but it's too late for that now; I did a fresh install and the wireless part seems dead.

I already tried installing ndiswrapper as I did before:
$ ndiswrapper -l
bcmwl5 : driver installed
later I tried the fwcutter way:
$ bcm43xx-fwcutter -i bcmwl5.sys
Sorry, the input file is either wrong or not supported by fwcutter. I can't find the MD5sum b89bcf0a25aeb3b47030ac83287f894a

Ubuntu Networking :: Wireless Chipset Dead ?

Jun 21, 2010

It looks like my laptop's wireless chipset (Broadcom) has/is dying. It won't work anymore on my Lucid install whereas it was working perfectly. The warrenty is long expired.

lspci brings up nothing about it anymore, it once did.

I booted my laptop into Win7 and it no longer finds it either. The manual slider switch on my HP Pavillion dv6000 is in the on position but the light is yellow.

It will very rarely work on Win7 now.

I can't afford a new laptop just now so it looks like I need an external wireless adaptor. I have (open busses) USB, cardbus/54, and a small firewire port. It does not pcmcia or other busses.

Any particular chipsets to look for or avoid?

I've tried removing legacy usb support and changing usb2.0 speed from high to full. Nothing changed.

Ubuntu :: 10.04 Mouse/Keyboard Freezes

May 12, 2010

I just upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04 using the distro upgrade feature. Everything was upgraded without errors.

However, my mouse/keyboard now freezes after 10+ minutes of use. Both are unresponsive, and the keyboard lights does not change with the use of caps-lock, etc.

The system didn't crash though. I had a download running which was completed despite the mouse/keyboard hang.

The computer is barely usable now, I really wished I didn't upgrade...
