I downloaded one of the businesscard isos and booted up, but have run into the problem that my usb keyboard is dead in the installer. It works in setting up my bios, and has always worked before, but I cannot choose any items on the installation menu. I found a bug report that seems to be this issue, but it said that this would be fixed when debian moves to the 2.6.32 kernel on the installer.

1. Gnome shell was normal until yesterday, I upgraded new packages up to date, then I cannot log into gnome shell any more (however, fallback mode is normal). It shows a sad computer screen with message "Oh no, something has gone wrong". The only thing I can do is pressing the logout button to log out.
2. Debian is running on my thinkpad T60p, and I can choose keyboard model in Gnome2, but I can't find any options in the system setting in Gnome shell to change keyboard layout for model IBM T60/R60.
When I start a second X session using startx --:1, (as either my normal user or root), it goes straight into and LXDE session (Debian's default, I think). Once LXDE is started, there is no applications menu (only run and logout). How do I get it to show the full application menu that my regular user can see when I log in from GDM3 normally?
View 2 Replies View RelatedThe thing is that whenever I try to install Ubuntu (Xubuntu actually, but the problem seems to happen with any desktop environment) I fill the spaces, choose the partition where to install, set the mount points and everything, but when I get to choose the keyboard layout the installation freezes, it just stays there and it won't give me the chance to submit a username and a password for my Linux session.

View 4 Replies View RelatedAt least the DVD I downloaded a few days ago was nothing like the one that was downloaded on release, most worked I'm missing a couple of important things on the gnome menus, nothing on system>preferences or Admin for printing, I had to configure the printer directly with the CUPs admin panel. These no way to edit the menus, right clicking on the bar has no effect, and I haven't form menu-edit in the repos with yumex, or the gnome control pane. Have these been dropped in FC14 ?

I now havedouble the menu items in GRUB2 for both of these.
I ran the update grub command in the terminal and it goes smoothly, but the extra menu items still don't go away.
Puzzingly the menu items point to the same partition on the drive as their clone. Both of the Fedora menu items point to sda8

just recently upgraded to 10.04. After the upgrade I noticed that certain Administration menu items are msising. I can't find the "Hardware Drivers" tool. Is there a way to reinstall to put the complete files and correct the menu items, etc.?

But there are some limitations coming from outdated repositories for older version of slackware. Eg. a tar ball with Maxima source maxima-18.1.... which is default in the slackbuilds.org repository for slack 12.2 doesn't exist at this moment. One can find older and newer versions. I understand that maintainers of slackbuild scripts are rather focused on recent slack version. Nevertheless such outdated entries should be somehow marked
in the way that a visitor will know that a default source tarball is no longer accessible. Maybe persons who submit the scripts should be responsible for keeping track for a sources. If that problem won't be solved it is a danger that slackbuilds.org will play only a role of some addons to the very recent slack release - but if this will be a case then simpler is to build say additional two or three DVD's of packages.
First off, I have spent several hours searching this and other forums looking for an answer to this, and have tried several things, none of which have fixed this issue. Here is what I'm seeing:I performed a new install of FC12 on a Thinkpad R40, 512Mb RAM, with a 40Gb HDD, 38Gb useable, from a live CD. That leaves a little over 9Gb free for expansion. All went well with the install, but the post-boot upgrade would not complete due to an error with the abrt files. I found a thread discussing this and used the suggested method of performing the updates from a shell, which worked fine. There were LOTS of installations, updates, and replacements, and finally the shell returned "Complete!". After a reboot I was going through the Fedora_12_ User_ Guide.pdf and noticed many items missing from the System Menu as described in section 3.1.1.3 "The System menu". Another thread seemed to address a similar issue with su - then yum groupinstall "GNOME Desktop Environment", which I did. It updated over 870 items, then completed with no errors. At this point I logged out and back in, no change, and then tried a reboot, which also did not change anything. Finally, I'm appealing to the community.

Today I wanted to try what a gnu/linux is like so I installed dragora 2.2 on one of my free partitions , (sda 1 is my debian root , sda2 is my debian home, I had sda4 which nothing was on it so i installed dragora on it. But something bad happened , during boot time you get this page which asks you what distro you want to enter in past I had just one choice and it was debian jessie, I expected after installing dragora I will see 2 distros on this page, but i get just 1 , and that's dragora ... but maybe i should mention this that when entering dragora i can access all my previous files , debian systemfile , debian home , they are still there but i can't enter debian jessie ...

It doesn't make any difference if I use any other layout: Serbian latin, Serbian cyrilic, USA, Croatian, Bosnian. Also it doesn't make any difference if I use alt, win, or the ctrl key for that. However, i would like to get rid of the little enveloppe in the menu bar, more precisely in what i think is called the notification area. i have found some stuff online about how I'm supposed to delete a package and restart, quite unsuccessful method really, since the envelope is still there.
Plus whenI right click on the menu bar to pin / unpin items, it doesnt work, all the submenus are greyed out.
When I choose System --> Preferences --> Screensaver, it runs x-screensaver instead of gnome-screensaver, BUT, in /usr/share/applications, I have the file:
gnome-screensaver-preferences.desktop
And the contents are:

So it should be launching gnome-screensaver, not x-scrensaver. Where on earth is x-screensaver getting launched from? I thought the menu was determined by /usr/share/applications. (By the way, I did previously have x-screensaver instead of gnome, I am trying to put it back how it was. I have more-or-less succeeded, except this Menu item which is puzzling me.)
I don't like Windows 7 Starter, nor Microsoft. I'm in the process of ditching them for Ubuntu. I'm trying, I really am. I've successfully installed Ubuntu Netbook Edition, and I'm now stuck. How the hell do I use this? I can't figure out how to add different items to my side menu bar. I can't figure out which version of Ubuntu I have. The documentation page says, "To check which version of Ubuntu you are running, click System -> About Ubuntu. The first line of the page that loads will tell you the version number, for example Ubuntu 10.04 LTS." I DON'T EVEN HAVE A "SYSTEM" BUTTON! How am I supposed to use this clumsy OS? I can't find any sort of "beginner's guide" or help like that on the internet.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have Debian Jessie 8.0 amd-64 installed. It is a dual boot system with Widnows 8.1 alongside. Both the systems work fine with a few glitches coming at times on jessie. But I assume it should get stabilised with time.
Problem is:
The usb keyboard is no longer detected until the GRUB stage crosses.
* This implies I am unable to press F2 to enter into BIOS
* I am unable to chose Windows 8.1 by using arrow key on the keyboard.
When the default system (first in the grub list), in this case Debian is selected after time runs out then the keyboard comes back to life and works properly thereafter.
So far I have tried the possible solution given at [URL] .... but it did not work.

First, openSuse 11.4 64bit fresh install, KDE 4.6.0. Clicking on the "Adios" button brings up a window offering the Logout, Turnoff and Restart options. In openSuse 11.3 the Restart option had a drop down menu which allowed one to choose the operating system to restart. This useful feature seems to have disappeared in 11.4. Is there any way in which I can reinstate it?
View 6 Replies View Relatedhow I restore dead mouse and keyboard input from the live cd. Basically what happened was I was updating the machine and decided to let them run in the background while my sister's 6 year old son played some tux computer games, when he was finished he switched the entire computer off at the power button and it was still updating in the background. Now there is no mouse or keyboard input, I cannot get into the recovery console, nor can I control a terminal from the login screen in order to successfully complete the update. This means basically the only option to fix it would be to re-install or fix the human user interface device drivers (keyboard and mouse) via the live cd, I am in need of some advice or instructions on how to go about fixing this issue.
View 5 Replies View RelatedUnfortunately, when I try to install Debian off the DVD, the wireless gets disconnected right when it tells me to choose my method of connecting to the net. It then gives me three choices of connecting - wired, unknown, and wireless. I must be missing something, because when I choose wireless, it says it fails, and cannot find anything to connect to. I input the SSID and password manually and it says its not there. So I quit the install and go back to the desktop and reconnect no problems.

As you've probably guessed, I want to remove "wine-Programs-" from the beginning of the folder names. I've tried using the menu editor to do this, but the 'Properties' button does not seem to work on anything I did not create myself. How do I go about editing the names?
I would also like to know how to move the MS Office shortcuts into a custom folder/menu. They refuse to drag into any folder I make.
I just loaded KNE 10.4 onto my Dell Mini and I'm trying to get it configured. Some apps that I have installed using Synaptic (Kpackage seems pretty useless, even aside from the fact that the package names are illegible) are not showing up in the Search and Launch, and I would also like to add an additional category and add some items to the favorites list at the top of the page.
Right clicking does not seem to provide any options to change what used to be the menus, and middle clicking puts strange little yellow boxes at the bottom of the screen. (I haven't figured out how to make those go away.What config files hold the data I want to update? Are they not under ~/.kde for some reason?
