View 1 Replies View RelatedI have just finished the upgrade of the latest version and I'm at the point of my system restating.
My system automatically tried to restart but on the restart I got the 'terminal' view. It stopped when asking for my username (it never normally asks for this before the grub menu) and then password. I didn't get any further than that.
I now have on my screen (still in the terminal view before the grub menu)
"name@name-desktop:...$ "
I'm on my phone now so I don't actually have the symbol for before the dollar sign but your know what it is. The raised S on a 90 degree angle.

View 1 Replies View RelatedAfter NFS mounting some system folders (i.e. lib, usr) of a slave cluster node to /lib & /usr located on the master cluster server I got into some problems: I forgot Ubuntu 10.04 was installed on this particular slave node, while the master node runs 9.10. Now, I am not able to unmount these folders using umount, or restart the system using shutdown, I get some error: " /lib/libblkid.so.1: version `BLKID_2.17' not found". Is there an alternative way to unmount these NFS shares, or to restart the system to undo the mounts? The systems are located elsewhere, so just physically restarting the system would not be the preferred option.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI created a Virtual WebServer (I used CentOS as guest) by using VirtualBox to test my website. When I typed "/sbin/ifconfig" to get "inet addr" it showed 192.168.56.101. I used a web browser from my host (Fedora 14 GNOME) to access 192.168.56.101. It was good, It displayed "Apache 2 Test Page". But I accessed 192.168.56.101/mysite it redirected to 127.0.0.1/mysite and showed error page.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am an absolutely beginner with Linux (ubuntu). I got fed up with widows and decided it was time to go. I installed (clean install from a cd) ubuntu 10.04 on my desktop. It is an hp compaq d220 MT.It looks good and feels good, well at least for a while since it keeps crashing. The screen starts to flicker, goes black, and the only way to get it up and running again is to press the on/off button until the system powers off and restart.

When i try to restart networking it quits with this message "don't seem to be have all the variables for eth1 inet" Can anyone point out what I'm doing wrong? if i do 'sudo ifconfig eth1 192.168.3.1 netmask 255.255.255.0 up' eth1 comes up

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have been working on this for a few hours now and still haven't been able to track down whats going on. I just switched servers and put a fresh debian install on with apache2 + custom suexec + php5(fcgi). now when i upload a file to the site it wont upload, so i tracked down the issue. its the /tmp directory that root tmp. its at 100% so i restart the /etc/init.d/apache2 process and the /tmp directory is automagically cleared to 20% used and i can upload again. so i figure ok its got to be a setting. i looked in all the conf files conf.d the php5 conf files and no where do i have a /tmp directory set. so i think OK I can build a cron to clear the tmp directory every 10 mins till i find the issue, but alas, when i go into the tmp directory There are NO files to delete!!! wtf. holy crap. and all that goodness, this is crazy, how can you have a tmp directory that is not being written to, from all i can see, so i think ok it might be a hard link, i checked, in all root and sub root directories no hard links to tmp, no soft links to temp either. and if i sit in my /tmp directory and do a df -h after some uploads its going from 20% so 23% and up, but i do ls -alh and nothing, then ls -al and watch bytes, nothing , so this is very strange. has anyone encountered something like this? is it possible that this is a hard link thats hidden somewhere or some other extreme function i have never heard of?

The root filesystem is the filesystem that is contained on the same partition on which the root directory is located, and it is the filesystem on which all the other filesystems are mounted.
In a multi-OS desktop, having Windows, Ubuntu and Fedora, what is the root filesystem as the root directory is located on at least 2 of the OS.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm looking for some advice about how to implement the following functionality in my pet project.
There are two users on my system, user1 and user2. When user1 logs in he can do what he wants etc.. when user2 logs in I want to somehow link the entire file system to another place. In more detail when user2 logs in and does something like ls ~, he should see contents of /home/user1/extra/home/user2/ instead of /home/user2/
and when user2 does ls /usr/bin he should see contents of /home/user1/extra/usr/bin/
Is there a simple way to do this kind of operation. I have looked up the ln command, but I am a little unsure about how to show a completely different file structure to a particular user.
I did play around with ln and found that you can make "soft links" to directories. The problem being how can I link the user2 home directory /home/user2 to something like /home/user1/buffer/home/user2 . can I use something like ln -s /home/user1/buffer/home/user2 /home/user2 .. I guess not. I didn't want to try it as I wasn't sure so as to not hose my system.
I need help writing a script that will copy everything from tape to system directory. I have a Linux box with 3 TB of Hardware space. I am using the following commands
1) mt /dev/st0 rewind
2) tar xvf /dev/st0
3) tar xvf /dev/st0 fsf 1 (Using this to move to the next segment of the tape) and then
4) tar -xvf/dev/st0
I keep repeating steps 3 and 4.
Can you please tell me how can I tar ball/compress a directory hierarchy with soft links in Linux?

I have accidentally ended up in deleting my root directory while I blindly fired command while watching movie.
I fired following command
#rm -rf ~/<SPACE>*.out
instead of this command
#rm -rf ~/*.out
Things already done:
1) Created /root directory relogged to get some of basic settings of gnome and Desktop.
2) Things went well now when I login my desktop ,gnome environment and other things looks to be working well only prompt on my terminal has changed. I can fix it any ways.
Things I want to ask:
1) I haven't studied much about contents of /root directory to best of my knowledge is it like other user's home directory with some basic configuration files for mostly required applications. SO my question is have I lost any thing important system file or something?
2) If I have lost any important configuration or system data how can I recover it without reinstalling whole system? (My opinion about this is, It is quite possible but to do so, as far as I know capabilities of linux. But I still want comments from experts before I try any things on it because I don't want to backup my whole HDD and reinstall the whole stuff again for me and also my sister's stuff in MS.)
I am trying to create hard links within a file system to a directory, but unable to do that. is there any limitation to create hard links to directories within file system ?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have to set up my development environment under OEL 5.4. The internal directory structure is more or less fixed, the question is where to put the whole application tree in standard FHS for the development phase. For production, the system will be deployed on a server where data is kept with an Oracle 11g database. Development goes with JDeveloper which has its own internal application/project directory structure; however, I whould like to be independent from this. Unfortunately, by carefully studying the web for FHS, if I will adhere to it I only find ready-made packages to put under /opt, for example. No development aspects are mentioned. make some proposal, possibly with respect to best practices.
