I'm trying to turn an old Acer Aspire One with a tiny 8GB solid-state drive into a lean web server, so I'd like to remove as many packages as possible to free up space. It will be running a standard LAMP install and nothing else. Right now it has Ubuntu Netbook installed, so I need to know everything I can delete and still have it boot and run mysql, apache, etc.

I'd like to eliminate anything unnecessary from my Ubuntu Server box (on a Compact Flash IDE drive) and set it up to boot into RAM. I've seen ways of getting a live CD to do this and seen other distributions that are designed to do this, but since I'm familiar with Ubuntu, I'd like to be able to get rid of my swap space and make the existing installation boot to RAM.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a 64bit linux server with 5 virtual hosts on it. When someone fills out a contact form on one of the sites...I get 15-20 copies of the same email. At first I thought it was the kids clicking send multiple times because the first emails were coming from the children's ministry "Email The Cast" section. But then I started getting multiples from the adult sites too. All contact forms are set to come to me.
What's stranger is that my registration section for one of the sites uses the SAME php script (different file) to email me a notification that someone has registered but I only get 1 copy of that.
i finally managed to achieve minimal 11.2 system (following tutorial on this forum) but now whenever i try to install additional packages using yast, it automatically selects a whole bunch of unnecessary software. For example, installation of "radeonhd" tries to pull Mozilla Sunbird from repositories.
That's unacceptable behavior and no wonder system gets bloated over time. Is there a way to set yast to pull only crucial dependencies with selected packages (like apt-get's recommended and suggested packages)?
I've got a dual boot PC with windows 7 & Ubuntu. I had installed Ubuntu 10.04 & recently upgraded it to 10.10. Now I have these entries in the boot menu.

I have taken the largest chill pill I could find and have reinstalled nutty into a spare partition with a view to taking a more forgiving approach... i'll mostly stand by the rants for the time being... After restarting the system now I can't even seem to get the KDM. I am greeted with a black screen.--- I restarted the system again and the nasty little bugger is back again! This is so frustrating. How do I get plasma-desktop to load instead?---- Great now I can see that plasma-desktop and plasma-netbook both are running simultaneously! netbook on top of desktop. If I install the Netbook packages (either with the Netbook CD or by installing them into a Desktop installation), I just get garbage on the screen that is unusable.

I'm trying to install Fedora 14 on my netbook using a network PXE server on my laptop. I can see in the syslog, that initrd.img and vmlinuz get sent over tftp. The problem seems to be in my kernel parameters:

On booting up the netbook it can't find a root device. I'm not sure what to specify for the root= because I have deleted all the partitions on /dev/sda. I did this because originally it kept booting up the old OS, and I assumed there was a way to format the disk as part of the install. I'm stuck now and was hoping someone with more experience of bootloaders might be able to help. If possible I'd like to do this using the network rather than a usb.

I found it quite useful from USB and eventually installed it on my Gateway netbook, that's where my nightmare started. At installation option gave me to ubuntu side by side with my Windows Vista on the netbook. It used part of hard drive space to create a separate partition for ubuntu. Intallation is OK but display is very bad particular moving the mouse around Firefox. Screen turned white back ground right with messy character font. It tried move around and have to restart ubuntu to get out.
I thought it might be something display drive not setup but found no option to make change from within Ubuntu. I had frustrated to search for fixing option and decide to "remove" ubuntu from the netbook. The worst, there is no option whatsoever on how to remove it. I search this forum and script to delete the partition from terminal. When it restart, the MBR or Grun loaded with errors incorrect file system. That mean the MBR not load and it is a netbook. It does not come with Vista CD for me to fix MBR nor resize the partition. I had to re-install ubuntu again back to square one to use it size by size with Windows.
Any one have a clean and details steps on how to remove ubuntu, resize partition and able to bring the netbook back to Windows only?
I have installed a linux server in my office to run 16 machines. Its main use will be a internal mail server but will be also running websites.
I have installed Ubuntu 9.10 server x64 and have got apache running.
I am looking for the simplest more robust solution for smtp, pop3 and imap. I have only ever used qmail before and found it a pain to configure and its getting old so I though I should probably try something new. I have not much experience with running pop3 or imap on linux so would love a suggestion on that.
After a fresh install of fedora 15 gnome 3 I need to download some packages so I can start working with it. but when I try to get them using yum or packagekit, servers are very slow, so i need to find a fast server for my connection like I used to find in ubuntu. there was an ability in package manager to ping all the servers and choose the best one, and I cant find such thing neither in yum nor in packagekit. Is there anyway to do that in fedora 15 ?!
