Why is my computer taking around a minute to boot? 10.04 for me is slower at booting than 8.04 is. 10.04 is taking about 10 seconds to get to the login screen, then almost a minute after that before it gets to a fully loaded desktop.

View 2 Replies View RelatedAnybody notice a slowdown in their boot times? I have had F11 (64 bit) running for about three days and it is taking twice as long to boot as when I first installed. I have not done much other than configure my wireless printer and change a few icons. I have Compiz cube effects running but I did that right away and it made no difference in my system speed. If anything I thought I should be booting faster after disabling a few things in the start up menu that I dont need.
I went from about a 30 second total boot to almost a minute to the login screen

View 1 Replies View RelatedBasically when I login back from a suspend or after I boot the pc, the wifi takes 30seconds to a minute before it starts to connect. This makes it very annoying to have to wait for no reason.
Basically the issue is caused by the wifi not having a script to search for a network after a suspend.

I've been a long time Windows user, but I've started a small firm and because of lack of funds, I've decided to install Ubuntu on my company's PCs.I have 8 PCs in total - 6 of them with Intel CPUs, and the last two with AMD CPUs. I bought the extra two computers because I've managed to find an extra two people to work at my company, and AMD-based PCs are cheaper so I've decided to buy them instead of Intel.Long-story short, I've installed Ubuntu 9.10 and boot time takes about half-an-hour. After the computers finally boot, USB hardware doesn't work at all. I was forced to buy PS/2 keyboards & mice and they both work fine after the PCs boot.I don't know what's causing this delay.I've enabled Cool 'n Quiet from BIOS.I've tried several instructions like editing the /etc/modules file.I've installed cpufreqd, tried to configure it, but it didn't work.I've check the CPU stats and my CPUs are running at 800MHz. I can't believe nobody managed to fix the 800MHz problem as I've noticed it's quite common among AMD Ubuntu users. I think I've tried almost anything that I've found on this forum.I can't keep asking my employees not to reboot their PCs. Both Chrome/Firefox crash a lot on Ubuntu so they're forced to restart their computers.The computer specs are: AMD Athlon II X2 240 dual-core @ 2.800MHz, 2GB RAM, 500GB HDD, etc.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI've got two laptops running Ubuntu. Both have had Lucid installed from the live cd. I have upgraded one of them to Maverick. Both distributions are running great after they boot up, but I haven't experienced any faster boot times with either distibution. Both boot to Bios and then the screen goes black with a blinking cursor in upper left corner of the screen. The black screen remains for 30 to 45 seconds and then I get the Ubuntu splash screen for maybe 5 seconds, and then desktop. Why am I not seeing faster boot times? I realize 45 to 60 seconds is good compared to other os's, but I anticipated much faster boot times. Shut down on the other hand is quite fast at maybe 5 to 10 seconds. Does anyone else get this black screen on boot? Seems like wasted time cause I can't tell what's going on during the time there is a black screen. This is not a real big deal breaker, as I don't reboot very often, but I just wonder why bootup isn't faster.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI've been having a problem on my AMD based machine, 4cpu, gigabyte ga-ma78gm-s2h Mobo, 8GB mem, two 2 terabyte Sata HDs.One thing I've found is that any kernel after 2.6.32-17 has a randomness at boot time whether the system will completely boot or not.
For instance just today I downloaded and installed 2.6.32-24
It fails to boot (I've tried cold boot, warm boot).Running its repair also fails to completely boot.My experience is that if I keep trying it "may" eventually boot but I believe there was some change after 2.6.32-17-generic that's causing the problem.Because as with 2.6.32.23... which also fails to complete bootup many times... eventually my guess is that 2.6.32.24 will also boot "sometimes".But why does 2.6.32.17 always boot for me? Something changed and its not my setup.

I have installed "open-SUSE 11.4" on a "500GB Free Agent External Hard Drive". I didn't have any problem in booting since last week that I booted it from my laptop. Also I did it before several times from then when I try to boot it e.g. from an "Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q9400 @ 2.66GHz" PC the time between loading INITRD and starting boot sequence messages lasts nearly 30 minutes!(i didn't actually measure it but it take a long time in the same order). after starting boot sequence which is showed on monitor everything looks normal. e.g copy of files would be done by speeds between 2MB/s to 30 MB/s depending on the targets.I used to use the external hard derive to boot from different laptops and PC's from start but I didn't have such a problem anytime.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently upgraded to 10.04 but also changed around some drives and it is now taking nearly 10 minutes to boot.The drive changes were the removal of one SATA drive used for storage and the addition of a two drive RAID1 set via the onboard ICH10R SATA controller that is used for storage. I then used DMRAID to initialize the raid set in Ubunutu. I just updated to Natty yesterday and I went straight into burg no problem, but from that point Ubuntu takes anywhere from 5 to 10 minutes to boot. I literally have to leave the room and go do other things while waiting. So, today I did a complete fresh install and it is on ssd with plenty of space, go straight to grub no problems. Windows 7 will boot at its normal speed, but Ubuntu just sits with a purple screen for anywhere to 5-10 minutes after grub menu. I have reinstalled two more times and still same issue, holding down and tapping shift key did make it boot one time in about a minute and a half (usual time in 10.10 on my machine is about 12 seconds). I don't think it is a graphics issue but I am running an ATI card.

While things are generally good, the printer randomly delays output for long periods, often as much as ten minutes of delay. The delays might occur at any point during the output, that is, printing will often start, but then hang part way through a page. Sometimes, the delay is sol long (more than ten minutes) that the printer seems to timeout, form feeds the page, and abandons the output. Mostly, however, great patience results in output resuming after the many minutes delay and the page will complete. For multi-page outputs, the delay might occur more than once during the total output, and sometimes you get lucky and the whole thing comes out in a single shot.

I have an issue with crontab that I can't resolve even though I searched the web like crazy. I tried to create a new cron job for taking a screenshot automatically every minute with scrot using "crontab -e" like so...

when I run it in my shell it does work fine and it seems to run with cron also because the log.txt file is modified every minute, however when I run it through cron the screenshots don't appear in the screenshots directory and nowhere else either.
Other jobs in the same crontab run very well. It doesn't seem to be a PATH issue because the paths are complete.
I'm sure I've seen in a player the option to play only first minute of songs in a playlist, but cannot remember which one that was.

I have DNS and everything setup right and it is working. Samba on the other hand is configured right but it keeps shutting down after about a minute. When i run this command:
chksmb status
it says "Dead". Ill restart the service(rcsmb start), and keep checking the status, and after about a minute it shuts down again. I have done a restart, double checked my configurations and still cant find why this is happening. (config file somewhere?)

When I try to boot or install from it, the screen shows the "ubuntu" with the red dots for a minute and then a black screen with no action from the hard drive or the CD drive. I think it should be asking what language I want but presing enter does nothing.I have been using Ubuntu since 2006 and after yesterday's repartition I installed 6.06 from a live CD so I know I can install from a CD.
View 6 Replies View RelatedThis just started happening recently on an older install of Linux Mint 9, 32 bit, Gnome with Compiz using a Logitech wireless keyboard and mouse.
I noticed another problem about the same time and I don't know if it is related but now when I restart I get the "default keyring login" pop up message. The keyboard and mouse are unresponsive for at least 60-90 seconds after everything has opened. It only recently started to do this and is not a result of old/slower hardware.
I don't know where to start looking for a cause or what section to post this in.
On 10.04 64-bit, I've been noticing this weird error where totem comes to a halt after ~3/4 of playback in a 30-45 minute video, then it starts to play back again after about 10 seconds but it's a bit choppier. What could be causing this or how I can track down the issue? I'm running a nVidia GTX 275 with nividia-current drivers (195.36.24) if that helps diagnose anything.
