Well, the problem is that according to the steps that the person who posted the code, I should type this code after executing Terminal before computer boots. and the way to execute Terminal is to have the key: escape holded Well, I do hold the key: escape. but I see no terminal! I have typed in normal mode...but, I guess the code only works before boot up. How can I execute terminal? is there any other way to fix the display settings? I currently have Windows Xp and Ubuntu.... and I have no problem with the display settings on Xp Can I do do from recovery mode?
Because I have 2 operating systems I get a screen like this (except mine is ubuntu 10.10) If I do it from the recovery mode.... would the code works?

May 10, 2011I have a Samsung B2030 Monitor whose resolution is 1900x1200 but after installation of UBUNTU 11.04 it shows only 1024x768.If the person wants a remote access to the system - I can allow that as well but he will have to tell me the info step by step as I am a novice and new to ubuntu.

Apr 29, 2010I have installed Ubuntu 10.4 on Virtual Box, i have installed it successfully, the only problem is when i check the display settings it only have 2 options : 600 X 400 and 800 X 600 and this makes it difficult to work on Ubuntu as 800 X 600 is half the size of my desktop.
how i can increase / configure the display settings so that atleast i can fit ubuntu screen into my screen size.
Ubuntu :: Change Default Display Manager From Kdm To Gdm?
Sep 26, 2010I installed 6.04 LTS on my machine and the upgraded to 8.04 LTS, and then 10.04 LTS. I was playing around with appearance settings and chose the highest level of window animation but this seemed to cause some sort of problem with gnome (the top bar of windows disappeared including minimize, maximize and close buttons). So I used command line to reinstall gnome (sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop) and this fixed the problem, but because i didnt realize what i had done to cause it i tried to do the animation settings again, which messed it up and became unfixable by using the above command, so i installed the kde desktop environment using command line and chose to use kdm as the default display manager because i thought i might have to uninstall gnome and didnt want to lose all display managers. Later on i had another idea of how to fix my gnome problem, i chose the highest level of animation again in the appearance settings but when it asked if i wanted to keep these settings or use previous settings i chose previous which reverted back to the lowest level and the window bar came back!
Because i got this fixed i didnt want to use the kdm display manager anymore, so i modified the /etc/X11/default-display-manager file from /usr/bin/kdm to /usr/bin/gdm, at the time i didnt realize it was supposed to be sbin! so i restarted the computer and now it cant find the file for kdm or gdm because gdm is in sbin and kdm is in bin but its looking for gdm in bin. So i have been trying to use recovery boot up to edit the file, which is where my problem is: whenever i try to edit the /etc/X11/default-display-manager file to read /usr/sbin/gdm, it displays that i do not have write permissions and that it is a read only file. I have used sudo with every command, and tried nano and vi text editors.Long story short I need to edit the /etc/X11/default-display-manager file to read /usr/sbin/gdm but it will not let me due to "write permissions" even when im using root and sudo;

Jul 12, 2011i have debian squeeze installed on an old computer to use as a file/web server. i had an extra monitor laying around and wanted to use it with the server. after about half an hour or so, it turns off and i have to press a key on the keyboard to get it to turn back on. i'm not sure how to keep it from doing this without installing a gui. does anyone know how to do this?

Mar 10, 2010I just installed Ubuntu 9.10 this evening. I have a Nvidia Geforce 8500GT video card with two monitors hooked up (one to the cards VGA, the other to the DVI). I installed Nvidia drivers and Ubuntu is working with both monitors fine.
The problem I am having is it chose the monitor plugged into VGA as the primary (uses that monitor for the toolbars) when I really want them to go on the monitor that is plugged into DVI. Is there anyway for me to switch which monitor Ubuntu treats as the primary?

Jun 2, 2010I am on Lucid 10.04 with Nvidia 9600m (v195.36.24) My TV is 1280x720, my Laptop is 1600x900 (Closest setting to the TV is 1360x768 ). I plug my laptop to my tv via an HDMI cable. I press F1 to get into my presentation mode, and the tv shows most of the desktop, but not all of it. Is there any way to conveniently make it so it automatically sets it to 1280x720?

Apr 8, 2011I have google'd the crap out of this and have yet to find a "solved" forum. I currently have 2 sapphire ati 5770's in xfire. I also have two monitors. My (preferred) primary display has a dvi input and my other display is hdmi. I have them both plugged into only one of the cards. For some reason it keeps setting the hdmi display as the primary. And I want them in extended view. The ATI CCC suite does not support changing the primary monitor and I have tinkered with the xconfig but I do not really know what I am doing, so I have ultimately not been successful. here is my xorg.config file.
