Ubuntu :: Can't Change The Display Settings?

I received Ubuntu 10.10 (a friend gave me the cd) Well, I installed, but I can't change the display settings: the maximum it gives is 900x600 So, I went online and looked for a fix.. I found this:

Well, the problem is that according to the steps that the person who posted the code, I should type this code after executing Terminal before computer boots. and the way to execute Terminal is to have the key: escape holded Well, I do hold the key: escape. but I see no terminal! I have typed in normal mode...but, I guess the code only works before boot up. How can I execute terminal? is there any other way to fix the display settings? I currently have Windows Xp and Ubuntu.... and I have no problem with the display settings on Xp Can I do do from recovery mode?
Because I have 2 operating systems I get a screen like this (except mine is ubuntu 10.10) If I do it from the recovery mode.... would the code works?

i have debian squeeze installed on an old computer to use as a file/web server. i had an extra monitor laying around and wanted to use it with the server. after about half an hour or so, it turns off and i have to press a key on the keyboard to get it to turn back on. i'm not sure how to keep it from doing this without installing a gui. does anyone know how to do this?

I'm using OpenSUSE as a guest OS in VMware. Display settings are 1400x1050@60Hz but I want to change them for 1440x900. Using root account I go to Configure Desktop -> Display -> 1440x900. The first problem is that I can't choose 60Hz, only "Auto" or "0.0". I click Apply and the resolution changes, but if I reboot the computer or just logoff... resolution goes back to 1400x1050. My card and monitor properties: [URL]. Another strange thing is that if I click Ok on the Card and Monitor properties (changing from one resolution to another), I can choose to "Test" it, and xfine2 appears but... it ALWAYS says "1400x1050". I searched the forums for a long time and could not found any relevant informationI am new to ubuntu (10.10 64bit) and I just want to know if it is possible, like it is in win7 (sorry!), if I can plug in my hdmi cord and have the laptop speakers and display disable, and have the external display and its spears enabled.

i have a computer with 3 users on it, and a folder using samba that everyone on the network has access to. Lets say that, the folder is stored in /etc/sharedfolder. What happens is, when user1 puts a folder in it, then logs off, user 2 attempts to modify it and fails, because permission is set to 755, and they are not in the same group. (even if they were, it should still need to be 775) Anyway, my current solution is, every 5 minutes a crontab changes permission like so: chmod 777 -R /etc/sharedfiles && chown useradmin:superadmin -R /etc/sharedfiles Which works, but seeing as there is getting close to a gig in there, this is a bad solution, as it eats up the computers resources. Solutions that i think might work:
1) create a script that only changes permissions that need be changed.
2) change file permission settings to force all documents to inherit parent document settings

I currently have a Windows XP OS which i want to dual-boot with Ubuntu Linux 10.10 . I put the disk in the drive and chose the option to install Linux through Windows. But it hangs in the middle. I am also unable to change my BIOS settings due to which i can"t change my boot preference. My first Boot is the HDD. I want to change it to CD-ROM. Any suggestion? I also have another PC where i can boot through the CD...I tried installing there by booting from the CD but i get this error message after seeing the purple Linux screen with the loading dots. "(Process:286):Glib warning**:getpwuid:failed due to unknown user id (0)
P.S.- I am not able to see any options while the boot is going on

I changed my display resolution to 832x624 from a higher resolution. Now all my resolution higher than 832x624 have disappeared and I cannot set a higher resolution.Does anyone know how I can get my higher display resolutions back.

I'm using Xubuntu 8.10, and Xfce 4, which a very clever friend installed for me.
Problem is, my screen display keeps shwoing windows, task bars and icons aligned so far to the left, they go off the screen.
I'm trying to find the display settings for the monitor, so I can nudge it to the right. Can't find where to click.

I'd like to do something, but I don't seem to find the solution. Here is my problem: I have a laptop and I plugged in another monitor to it. What I want to do is when UserA logs in, both of the monitor is used, but when UserB logs in, only one of the monitor is used. When I change the display settings it applies to the other user too. I'd like to have different display settings for each user

My display settings seem to have been corrupted after I upgraded from 9.04 to 9.10. I can only view my screen in 1280 x 1024 - no other resolutions work. Ubuntu is also not detecting my monitor, a Dell E193FP (19"). In reading some other posts, I see that the first question will be to post my xorg file, which follows.

I'm sure this is a very simple task but I don't have a lot of experience with Linux. I need to view what my display adapters settings are, specifically the refresh rate. I have found plenty on how to change the settings but not how show its current setup. I am troubleshooting an vga splitter/extender issue on a digital signage unit where the master screen syncs up but the remote screen does not, I think it has to do with H-Sync V-Sync or refresh rate.

hen it loads up ubuntu, it automatically detects the settings and resets, but my tv says it can't display the video. I have an old CRT monitor I hook it up to to be able to change settings, but it won't let me change the settings in gnome for the TV. I think the settings it will need to have for the video card hooked up RGB and television would be 1336x768, is there a way that I can program that to where it doesn't automatically detect the monitor?

I have never used Linux always windows so heres the problem the display only has 2 settings 640x480 and a smaller one and it say unknown monitor. I installed the drivers in hardware driver in systems I'm running Ubuntu v 9.10 if that matters and the video card is a Nvida mx440.

When I plugin a 2nd monitor, the display settings in Configure Desktop allows me to change the display mode to single expanded screen versus duplicate desktop. However, after restart the computer, I have to do that again. I can understand that if I un-plug the 2nd monitor, it should intelligently switch to a single screen mode. But if I don't, it should remember it.
Make the matter worse, if I am in single span screen mode (1 desktop on 2 monitors) and I unplug the monitor while the computer is running, it would not know how to switch back, even in the Display settings of Configure Desktop saying it's in the single monitor mode. This means application and mouse can freely be pushed way over that area of the screen (hidden). I write free software too, and I don't let obvious bugs like this creep into a major distribution like OpenSuse 11.2. It just gives a bad image for OpenSuse and open source in general.

I thought I'd try XFCE having used fluxbox for a while now, always keen to try something different. I've installed everything XFCE related from the package manager and it is mostly working well. The problem that I am having though is that I cannot see the display settings. When I try to access them through the menus I am presented with the following:Unable to start the XFCE display settings - The video driver does not support video outputs.My graphics card is GEForce 7050/nForce 610i. nVidia drivers are all up to date. So far I've been unable to find an answer on XFCE forums.

I have installed Ubuntu 10.4 on Virtual Box, I have installed it successfully, the only problem is when I check the display settings it only have 2 options : 600 X 400 and 800 X 600 and this makes it difficult to work on Ubuntu as 800 X 600 is half the size of my desktop. How I can increase / configure the display settings so that atleast I can fit ubuntu screen into my screen size.
I did install the addition application, restarted the OS but still I don't see any display resolution 1200 X 800, tried pressing ctrl+D nothing happens, after installing I saw it updated mouse cursor now i don't have to press ctrl key again n again to enter into the ubuntu OS but still struggling with the resolution as it's too small, please guide me (here is the screen shot of my screen after installing the addition app).

My default display (DF-770 monitor) comes up something like 1280x960. In the "configure desktop" > display I set the display to 1152x864@75Hz. Next I accept the setting after the preview. When I reboot, the display is back to 1280. Do I have to manually edit some file to make my selection permanent?
Sysconfig editor has a variable that starts off with 1024x768, but that doesn't seem to be my problem, so I didn't mess with it. How do I get my display preferences saved?

I have no clue why KDE is doing this, but whenever I reboot the system, the resolution resets to 1024x768. I really need to stop it from doing this. Also, Sax2 doesn't seem to be working and there is no xorg.conf file that I can see of.

I'm running PCLinuxOS 2010.07 (KDE) on my Acer laptop with Intel Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller. I have an external Acer monitor that displays at 1920*1080. I have selected my laptops internal screen to be disabled and use the external screen. The PC LinuxOS Control Centre selected the 'Intel later than 810 driver'. All works well whilst I'm using my system but when I turn off and reboot the settings are lost and I have a 1280*800 display on my laptop and the same on my external screen. Resetting the Display using Configure your Desktop allows me to reset the external monitors to my preferences but how can I make theses settings permanent?

I have just installed KDE 4.4 on Fedora 12 in addition to GNOME. The default Display resolution is the highest available. I changed it to a lower resolution. However, when I reboot, the resolution switches back to the default setting.

When I change the display resolution and refresh rate in system settings, those values will be reset to default every time I restart the computer. Is there a way to save the values, so that I don't have to change them again every time? I use Kubuntu 10.4. Another problem I have is that when I choose Leave / Sleep (Suspend to RAM), the computer will sometimes be locked, so that it never wakes up again. I can hear when this occurs, because then the cooling fan(s) will stay on. Normally, when Sleep works, the fans are turned off, because the computer goes into energy saving mode. i noticed the occasional sleep problem already in Kubuntu 9.10.

I have a Dell E6500 laptop (1280x800 screen), which I frequently dock.The dock as two Dell 1908FP 20" monitors connected by DVI. I can move between the laptop display and the twins by manually changing display configuration in NVIDIA X Server settings, but this is a pain requiring about 15 clicks each time.
I have tried using the "Save to X Configuration File" option in the Nvidia server settings, but this seems to screw everything up. I need to dynamically change between the setups... anyone have advice on getting that done?Can the xorg.conf file be configured to do it?My xorg.conf looks like this:

installed Fedora 14 on my desktop a couple of days ago. For the most part, it seems to be fine, but I've got a problem with the 'put display to sleep when inactive for' setting. From the desktop, I've tried going to system/preferences/power management, where I've set the display to go to sleep when inactive for 30 minutes - however, it instead goes to sleep after five minutes. The same applies whether I set it to 10m, 30m, 1hr or never.
Having looked online, someone mentioned gconf-editor as a fix to another issue, so I decided to give that a try as well. Under /apps/gnome-power-manager/timeout, I tried setting sleep_display_ac, sleep_display_battery and sleep_display_ups each to 1800 ("The amount of time in seconds before the display goes to sleep" - 30mins, by my maths) on the off-chance that the OS had incorrectly detected the power source, but the display again went to sleep after five minutes.
If it makes any difference, I'm not using a screensaver, and I think the kernel I have installed is 2.6.35.13-92.fc14.i686 (that's what's given in System Monitor). I've also tried running yum update, again just on the off-chance it'd fix something, but everything is up to date.
