i have debian squeeze installed on an old computer to use as a file/web server. i had an extra monitor laying around and wanted to use it with the server. after about half an hour or so, it turns off and i have to press a key on the keyboard to get it to turn back on. i'm not sure how to keep it from doing this without installing a gui. does anyone know how to do this?
View 10 RepliesI'm using OpenSUSE as a guest OS in VMware. Display settings are 1400x1050@60Hz but I want to change them for 1440x900. Using root account I go to Configure Desktop -> Display -> 1440x900. The first problem is that I can't choose 60Hz, only "Auto" or "0.0". I click Apply and the resolution changes, but if I reboot the computer or just logoff... resolution goes back to 1400x1050. My card and monitor properties: [URL]. Another strange thing is that if I click Ok on the Card and Monitor properties (changing from one resolution to another), I can choose to "Test" it, and xfine2 appears but... it ALWAYS says "1400x1050". Well, the problem is that according to the steps that the person who posted the code, I should type this code after executing Terminal before computer boots. and the way to execute Terminal is to have the key: escape holded Well, I do hold the key: escape. but I see no terminal! I have typed in normal mode...but, I guess the code only works before boot up. How can I execute terminal? is there any other way to fix the display settings? I currently have Windows Xp and Ubuntu.... and I have no problem with the display settings on Xp Can I do do from recovery mode?

Is there a way to save the values, so that I don't have to change them again every time? I use Kubuntu 10.4. Another problem I have is that when I choose Leave / Sleep (Suspend to RAM), the computer will sometimes be locked, so that it never wakes up again. I can hear when this occurs, because then the cooling fan(s) will stay on. Normally, when Sleep works, the fans are turned off, because the computer goes into energy saving mode. i noticed the occasional sleep problem already in Kubuntu 9.10.

Then I want it setup so if UserB signs in they get a screen resolution of 800x600 larger icons and larger mouse cursor icons. How can I customize the display settings per user with IceWM? I did not see where I can set these options in ~/.icewm/preferences.

I have 4 differences situations, 2 work, 2 do not: So I think my server box (Jill) is messed up.
1) On the server desktop, I can open a console as the gui logged in user and type: xeyes and those eyes appear.echo $DISPLAY :0.0
2) If from that console I log in as another user (ros) and then type:
xeyes I get:
Error: Can't open display:
echo $DISPLAY
(NOTHING)
so that will be a problem.
3) If I ssh into my offices remote server from my XP machine with putty and x-forwarding and then type:
xeyes and those eyes appear.
echo $DISPLAY
localhost:11.0
4) If I ssh into Jill from my XP machine with putty and x-forwarding and then type:
xeyes I get:
Error: Can't open display: echo $DISPLAY (NOTHING)so that will be a problem.
This leads me to think I have something messed up on my Linux box Jill.
I have tried setting DISPLAY= to various values but same error, so this led me to believe something else needs setting. Especially as env yields alot more in situation 1 than in situation 2.
What can I set where, that will allow me run xeyes (anything X) in situations 2 and 4, just like in situation 1 and 3?

View 3 Replies View Relatedi have a computer with 3 users on it, and a folder using samba that everyone on the network has access to. Lets say that, the folder is stored in /etc/sharedfolder. What happens is, when user1 puts a folder in it, then logs off, user 2 attempts to modify it and fails, because permission is set to 755, and they are not in the same group. (even if they were, it should still need to be 775) Anyway, my current solution is, every 5 minutes a crontab changes permission like so: chmod 777 -R /etc/sharedfiles && chown useradmin:superadmin -R /etc/sharedfiles Which works, but seeing as there is getting close to a gig in there, this is a bad solution, as it eats up the computers resources. Solutions that i think might work:
1) create a script that only changes permissions that need be changed.
2) change file permission settings to force all documents to inherit parent document settings
This is my third SLackware install. I installed 10,12, now 13. the Xorgsetup has changed I think, it does not display the screen to choose Horizontal and Vertical settings for the monitor. In addition, how can I set the Refresh rate?
View 2 Replies View Relatedi installed ubuntu 10.10 along side windows 7 on my gateway lt31 netbook. first time i ran it the graphics were really bad (static looking lines), i restarted in recovery and selected failsafex. ubuntu loaded fine after that i did all the updates and ran system tests, everything checked out. i want to now change the graphics back to the original setting in hopes that there wont be any static looking lines on the screen. when i go to appeatance preferences under the visual effects tab none is selected and all the options are grayed out.

I can chmod and change the permissions for all the files. However any new files created all have the default permissions. Is there anyway to change that so that I don't have to chmod everytime or run chmod as a cronjob?

Now I'd like to change it slightly but there doesn't seem to be a NVIDIA control panel. There used to be two of them. After installing the video driver, If I tried to go into UBUNTU video settings I would get a console message stating I now need to use NVIDIA control panel and would automatically open it for me.

But it hangs in the middle. I am also unable to change my BIOS settings due to which i can"t change my boot preference. My first Boot is the HDD. I want to change it to CD-ROM. Any suggestion? I also have another PC where i can boot through the CD...I tried installing there by booting from the CD but i get this error message after seeing the purple Linux screen with the loading dots. I can use display from iagemagick like so display -window root -geometry '-0-0' -resize '1920x1080>' IMG.png But cannot use it since it does not display on the right root window -- pseudo transparency in urxvt shows the wrong image as shown here. Ideally, I would like to resize any image bigger than my display. Does anyone know of a too that can do the following: Resize the image if it is bigger than some size (aka the display size). I have an Ubuntu server with no physical access to it, only via ssh/vnc.
It is stuck on a 1680x1050 resolution and in the system display settings the menus are disabled since there is no detected real display connected.
I need to lower the resolution to e.g. 800x600. code...
When I plugin a 2nd monitor, the display settings in Configure Desktop allows me to change the display mode to single expanded screen versus duplicate desktop. However, after restart the computer, I have to do that again. I can understand that if I un-plug the 2nd monitor, it should intelligently switch to a single screen mode. But if I don't, it should remember it.
Make the matter worse, if I am in single span screen mode (1 desktop on 2 monitors) and I unplug the monitor while the computer is running, it would not know how to switch back, even in the Display settings of Configure Desktop saying it's in the single monitor mode. This means application and mouse can freely be pushed way over that area of the screen (hidden). I write free software too, and I don't let obvious bugs like this creep into a major distribution like OpenSuse 11.2. It just gives a bad image for OpenSuse and open source in general.
I thought I'd try XFCE having used fluxbox for a while now, always keen to try something different. I've installed everything XFCE related from the package manager and it is mostly working well. The problem that I am having though is that I cannot see the display settings. When I try to access them through the menus I am presented with the following:Unable to start the XFCE display settings - The video driver does not support video outputs.My graphics card is GEForce 7050/nForce 610i. nVidia drivers are all up to date. So far I've been unable to find an answer on XFCE forums.
