Ubuntu Servers :: Change The Display Resolution Version 9?
Jun 1, 2010
Would someone please point me in the direction of how to change the display resolution on Ubuntu server version 9? I am talking about the actual VGA port on the back of the server. I am NOT talking about anything related to XWindows or a SSH session. This is a text based display. When I installed Ubuntu Server 9 on my server I picked a larger display resolution than I really want.

I am on Lucid 10.04 with Nvidia 9600m (v195.36.24) My TV is 1280x720, my Laptop is 1600x900 (Closest setting to the TV is 1360x768 ). I plug my laptop to my tv via an HDMI cable. I press F1 to get into my presentation mode, and the tv shows most of the desktop, but not all of it. Is there any way to conveniently make it so it automatically sets it to 1280x720?

I have wheezy installed on my laptop with XFCE 4.8 and kernel 3.14 from backports. The laptop uses Nivida-optimus:
Code: Select all00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Haswell Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 06)
01:00.0 3D controller: NVIDIA Corporation Device 1292 (rev a1)
I installed the proprietary bumblebee-nvidia (version 3.2.1) as per the instructions in URL...The problem is that when I connect a monitor to the laptop, the image is duplicated with only part of the screen showing on the second monitor. The monitor itself is not detected in the display settings or arandr / xrandr, so I can't change the resolution or set dual display, etc. Here is the output of xrandr:
Code: Select all$ xrandr
xrandr: Failed to get size of gamma for output default
Screen 0: minimum 1920 x 1080, current 1920 x 1080, maximum 1920 x 1080
default connected 1920x1080+0+0 0mm x 0mm
1920x1080 0.0*

This is my second try on UBUNTU, the first time i was happy but disappointed on how difficult changing settings could be, this time seems not to be any different.

(Video card is a nothing special Nvidia)
I want to change the default resolution of 1280x1024 to 1024x768. Setting at boot using the space bar or the KDE display (personal settings) does not survive the next boot. In yast or yast2, hardware, there is no monitor selection (something wrong here?).
Using root, run level 3, the command sax2 --vesa 1024x768 does nothing.
or sax2 -m 0=fbdev does nothing.
I had no problem with previous suse releases. What am I missing?

I have an Ubuntu server with no physical access to it, only via ssh/vnc.
It is stuck on a 1680x1050 resolution and in the system display settings the menus are disabled since there is no detected real display connected.
I need to lower the resolution to e.g. 800x600. code...

Installed server 10.04 using an old Sony 19" multi scan 400ps CRT monitor. The command line font is less than 1/8" high: something on the order of a large 4pt or small 5pt font. Made several attempts to locate the correct info using the man functions and searching the archives, but so far have not been unable to find the needed information. The eye strain is about to make me eligible for a white cane with a red tip.

I searched the archives and didn't find anything on this, and was just wondering if there is a problem if you load Ubuntu 9.1 and have a display that's higher than 1024x768. I'd prefer a machine with a higher res, but I've heard that Ubuntu will only go as high as 1024x768.I'm guessing, however, that by 9.1, it should recog the higher res while loading and it won't be a problem, but thought I'd check before shelling out on a machine with a nicer display.

I purchased a lenovo G550 recently and immediately dumped the Windows OS for Ubuntu 9.10. The display is currently defaulting to 1366x768. From reading it looks as though this display can support both 16:9 and 16:10 aspects. I have ran through the xrandr commands attempting to set my resolution to something...anything bigger than 1366x7768 (I'm used to 1600x1200 from my old T61, so this is painfully small). As a test I am trying to get 1920 1200, from my xrandr results it looks like it should be within the lcd's range. xrandr commands failed on me as I have seen on a couple other intel based resolution problems. I don't fully understand the root of the problem and have not had any luck in my searches. So I have also attempted to manually create the xorg.conf file, not luck yet.

I'm running 10.04 desktop on a Dell PowerEdge T710 connected to a Dell 22" LCD (E2210). The T710 uses a Matrox G200eW chipset. For some reason, I can't set the display resolution to the native res of my monitor (1680x1050). For what it's worth, here are the contents of /var/log/Xorg.0.log:

I have a Dell U2311H monitor which has a native resolution of 1920 x 1080. My graphics card is an ATI 6870.
Last night I installed Ubuntu 10.10 alongside my Windows installation, and when booting into Ubuntu, the maximum resolution I can select is 1280 x 1024.
How can I resolve this to get Ubuntu to display at the native resolution?

I installed 9.10 on a computer I'm working on, and right away the graphics went out. It won't display the proper resolution without shoving the display significantly to the left.
After MUCH Googling, I found that this can be fixed by a driver called i915. After much MORE Googling, I found [URL], which as you can imagine filled me with relief.
And THEN I try to follow the instructions and discover to my pure horror that GRUB has been gutted and made unusable in 9.10. GRUB2 just simply does not seem to have an option to insert the i915 driver into my boot command.
should I just forget this unstable release and burn a 9.04 disk instead?

I've just installed BitDefender on my 10.04 netbook, updated and activated it, completed a scan, and found Backdoor.Generic.284566 The thing is, it won't let me delete/quarantine the nasty. BitDefender does give me a warning about my screen resolution being too low (800x600), i believe this may be the problem. The option buttons are not visible on the screen, therefore I cannot use the program properly.(i tried the max resolution 1024x600, but to no avail )

I just put a HTPC together, it's a MSI 890GXM-G65 RT motherboard (on-board video, no video card) connected to a TV (SAMSUNG LED UN40B70) via an HDMI cable. I've put latest Ubuntu Desktop 10.10 on it. Installation went beautifully, the screen placed correctly, However, once it was actually running, the display is totally wrong. Looks like it's too far to the left and up - there's nothing on the screen except for background, at 1920x1080 resolution. Once I change the resolution to lower, it works.

CHECK OUT THIS THREAD INSTEAD: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.p...93#post8937093 I got a problem with my xorg.conf file. I'm just not able to add display resolutions. I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 x86 with Xfce4 desktop enivorment. I got an old Nvidia 6600 GT. I'm on a 21" IBM CRT, and i know that it's good for 2048x1536 @ 75hz.
I know that it can handle 30-130 khz Horizontal and 40-170 hz Vertical.
I also know that i would like to be able to use 1600x1200 @ 85hz.
Right now I'm just not able to go past 1024x768 @ 50hz. I've installed the restricted nvidia driver from the popup restricted driver menu, also tried to downgrade to an earlier driver, did'nt work, then i upgraded again to the newest driver that was easily available through Envyng-gtk. Still no more resolution choiches.
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg just don't work. Nothing happens when i write it in the terminal.
Now i'm starting to get frustrated

I installed Ubuntu 11.04 about a week ago and everything has been fine except that Ubuntu thinks my monitor has a resolution of 1024x768, while the actual resolution is 1366x768. I can't set a higher resolution through the visual interface (my monitor is detected as "unknown") Are there commands I can issue through the terminal to sort this out?

I use an old notebook 15' LCD, (4:3) with the ridiculous (for fly eyes) resolution of 1400x1050. My eyes are not young anymore. On Ubuntu I could select the resolution of 1152x864 which is fine (1024x768 is too big and really makes me look like a grand-daddy...). How can I set 1152x864 on Fedora 13, if it is possible and how? Recent distribution do not rely on a xorg.conf file anymore. I use an older 9000 Mobility Radeon, and there are no proprietary drivers anymore, but the open source one. I gave it a try. Install the package to create an Xorg default and edited my resolution
Code:
# Xorg configuration created by system-config-display
Section "ServerLayout"
Identifier "Default Layout"
Screen 0 "Screen0" 0 0
InputDevice "Keyboard0" "CoreKeyboard"
EndSection
[Code]...
I have changed the keyboard option to kill X with <Ctrl><Alt><Backspace> keys. That does not work--yet. No 1152x864 resolution.

I have installed Ubuntu 10.4 on Virtual Box, I have installed it successfully, the only problem is when I check the display settings it only have 2 options : 600 X 400 and 800 X 600 and this makes it difficult to work on Ubuntu as 800 X 600 is half the size of my desktop. How I can increase / configure the display settings so that atleast I can fit ubuntu screen into my screen size.
I did install the addition application, restarted the OS but still I don't see any display resolution 1200 X 800, tried pressing ctrl+D nothing happens, after installing I saw it updated mouse cursor now i don't have to press ctrl key again n again to enter into the ubuntu OS but still struggling with the resolution as it's too small, please guide me (here is the screen shot of my screen after installing the addition app).

I have Lucid 64 connected to my 27" TV with 4:3 aspect ratio via s-video from an nVidia NV4 GeForce 6200SE TurboCache 256 MB card using the 173 driver set at 800X600. After hours (don't get on my case, this is the first time I've had hardware that would run well on a TV) and hours of tinkering I've gotten a feel for how to do this and have some pretty good results. However, I have two problems.
.01 The display isn't quite filling the entire screen. It's leaving about a .25 inch black bar all the way around the screen. This is negligible and if I can't fix it with only minor adjustments then so be it. I can live with it.
.02 This one isn't so minor. Many of the Windows are opening with portions of themselves cut off of, usually, the bottom of the screen. This makes, among other things, getting to the Close button rather impossible.

Recently I encountered a problem with a triple-monitor setup where the EDID was rejected by the nvidia driver (version 195.36.0, claiming that the EDID checksum was invalid. Recently when I rebooted the display resolution went to 800x600, where as before it was 1024x768. For some reason 1024x768 is no longer listed in (GNOME) System->Preferences->Moniters. Even after reinstalling Debian from scratch it's not there anymore. What can I do to fix this? System->Preferences->Moniters says Moniter: Unknown and stays that way even if I click Detect moniters.
