After installing ggobi from the Lucid repositories, I get a bunch of errors on running it, all to do with not finding plugins, e.g.** (ggobi:10070): CRITICAL **: Error on loading plugin library plugins/ DataViewer/ plugin. la: (null)Sure enough the plugins aren't available when ggobi loads.

And now I manage to use Yum and it is not working, I cant find out what is happening but yum loads the plugins and then freezes and is no reaction to ctrl-c or something to stop it so I am have to kill it dna finally got no result from any update processes. Also I manage to clean cache or even to run yum. I checked the logs and it writes nothing about this ,neither an error or something to make me understand whats happening. Tried to install with rpm but the same thing happens. It just freezes...
View 2 Replies View RelatedMy reality distortion field went through a polarity shift today, and nothing's been working like it should. After the 10,000th problem, I decided to just make room for a fresh lucid install and the accompanying stability. It worked well, then I had some sort of a boot error upon reboot. So then I just decided to reinstall. The problem is that neither of my 2 internal HDDs is registering. Currently sda is an 80GB drive with a slackware install, sdb is a 120GB with a 60GB mint partition and (upon previous install) 60GB lucid partition. I've got no important data on any of my partitions yet, but also no net connection. I have install dvds for lucid, mint kde 9, and slackware plus a gparted live. I'm seriously considering making this machine a slack standalone, but then I've got legacy nvidia drivers to deal with.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI upgraded 10.04 to 10.10. At the tail end of the install, the display locked. After an hour or 2 I rebooted the box.
Came up to a command prompt (instead of starting the GUI automatically), started the GUI, everything seemed fine.
Ran 10.10 fine for 2 days. Installed apps, got my SVN environment set, started doing development work.
I got a lockup, had to reboot....Came back as 10.04.
I have only one hard drive (/dev/sda), 4 partitions.
My new files all seem to be there, are accessible and valid. Just the OS version has reverted??!?!?!?
How do I get back to 10.10 (without doing another update, install cycle)? Surely it's there somewhere...
Looking at the grub list, only Ubuntu 10.04 is an option.Looking at the /boot directory, there are several initrd.img files that are newer than the ones associated with 10.04 in the grub/menu.lst file (i.e., Ubuntu 10.04.1 = initrd...2.6.27, whereas there are other files in the boot directory like 2.6.26, 2.6.31 and 2.6.32)
After Upgrading to 11.04 32bit, the PAE Kernel loads by default. This would be great except it hangs probably due to graphics not loaded properly.
Regardless I do not want to use PAE Kernel on this dev system I have and luckily it looks like the Generic Kernel of the right version is in a sub-Menu called Older Linux Versions.
I have played with Grub2 before making minor changes but this one is a little beyond me. How can I move the regular Generic Kernel from the sub-Menu and make it my default Grub2 kernel so I boot to it automatically.
Messed up. Installed 11.04 both SSD on Eee 901. 16GB (SM-ASUS-PHISON) SSD won't load, 4 GB (SS-ASUS-PHISON) SSD loads but barely works. What to do?
View 6 Replies View RelatedThe problem is I've set up a dual boot with Xp and Ubuntu 10.04. Ubuntu was working fine till 2 days back but now when I select Ubuntu from the grub screen i get a whole lot of numbers next which it'll say Usb drive or sd card reader etc.. these go by quickly and then the comp stops running. If i press enter on the keyboard I get Initramfs and then i can type but nothing happens even if I type reboot. if I press cntrl+alt+F2 then i get a blank screen with flashing cursor. Same with recovery mode. Windows boots fine. The grub2 screen comes fine. The last thing i did before this happened is reconfigure the grub2 screen, but it seems to be fine (i had added a background img and reordered the boot options) I did not edit grub.cfg. I would prefer not to reinstall it as iv done it a half a dozen times already in the last few weeks..
View 8 Replies View RelatedI am trying to install 9.1. On bootup the CD loads and gives me the options on Installation, Try Ub etc. However after I choose install the BW logo shows up but nothing happens after that.
Incidentally i have 2 of these machines with 9.1 and 10.04 installing fine in the other one. In this one the main difference is a newer DVD burner. The other one also has a DVD burner but older.
The DVD burner is about 7 months old - purchases earlier in the year.
So wondering if loading the driver is an issue? if so how does the CD load and even the logo loads after Install is selected?
Or is it a different issue and would there be different options to try when installing? I would rather not have to replace the DVD burner.
Ive installed Ubuntu 10.10 from a SD card (yes my laptop supports booting from SD) and it works fine except the grub does not load. Although I know there are many threads about this Im not sure which one to use because my problem is quite strange.
Im not pretending I understand how grub works but I find it strange:
When I boot from Hard Drive, it boots into Windows without loading grub (I installed ubuntu to an empty partition along the windows on the same drive), however, when I force booting from the SD card, I get the grub window with all the options as expected - ubuntu, mem check, windows 7. Now Im not sure if its grub loading from this SD card (containing ubuntu) or the card somehow runs the grub that is on the hard drive.
My guess is that the partition containg windows (sda0) is flagged as boot and thus the system doesnt even look after grub when booting, however, when theres the SD card it somehow forces booting the ubuntu partition (sda6).
Any idea what I should do? I can boot into Ubuntu, I can access grub etc. I just cant make it load without having the SD card in my PC
How do you change the order of the list? I have Xubuntu 9.10 installed on a 5 gig partition. I only use it for Skype as the mic does not work in 10.04 at the moment for me.Anyway, I would like 10.04 to default to the top of the list. How do I change the order when grub loads.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI am running Jolicloud on my netbook (which I believe is an Ubuntu derivative) and I am tried to enter the getdeb.net sources in so I can install apps from the website through APT but
1) When I entered the sources into sources.list and then the key into Terminal and then went to the site and tried to install an app it didn't work.
2) I deleted the line of code in the sources.list file and when I opened terminal and entered "sudo apt-get update" it showed the list of sources, but on the list were Getdeb.net sources.
My question is how do I delete sources that aren't in /etc/apt/sources.list ?
i just installed the Debian on my old laptop. The install went fine but after that, the GRUB menu loads and freezes. I simply can't do anything. I checked menu.lst and the timeout is set to 5 but still nothing happens. It won't load. I then tried to load with the "super GRUB disk"but the same problem - as soon as it loads from the CD, it freezes and I can't do anything. Before I had Xubuntu on the same laptop but there was no Grub menu. It simply loaded. There's only 1 OS on the laptop /currently Debian/ - no windows, no other Linux.
View 14 Replies View Relatedthis is the 3rd time in 2 days I have installed this OS and its starting to annoy me. I have a Intel Celeron 2.6Ghz with i845 graphic chipset. I have installed 11.2RC2 and after the installation finishes and I reboot, it automatically asks which resolution I want (VESA/VGA). I have to select VESA since the VGA resolutions are HORRIBLY HUGE. When the boot screen comes, it loads halfway and then comes to a crashing halt. I let it load for 2 hours yesterday and it did NOTHING. After turning the computer off and back on, it comes to a screen to load normally or into failsafe. If I choose normal mode it does the same, if I choose failsafe, it does the same. So basically I have an OS I can't reach. If I could, I would give an xorg.conf on here, but I can't even get anywhere to produce one! When I put the live CD in, it boots perfectly, but I have to install again, only to get a OS that wont boot yet AGAIN.

I downloaded cairo-dock-plugins-2.1.3-2.tar.gz. When the download finished, I opened the folder and it requested I extract them, which I did. But I don't know how to use them.

So I did that and installed a bunch of things including OpenJDK and its browser plugins. OpenJDK caused trouble in a game I play, so I installed Sun instead. However, that's the old version. I followed the above instructions, removed the old verisons and attempted to install the plugins. But unless I use the Software Center, it doesn't work. I'm cutting and pasting exactly and nothing shows up in my aboutlugin screen.

My Wubi installation of Ubuntu (version 9.10, I think) that I recently installed was working fine at one point, but now it isn['t. I select Ubuntu instead of Windows from the Windows boot loader, but instead of getting the usual menu of different linux versions (I think 2, as I updated it at same point), and Windows, I get the GRUB command prompt instead.I've looked at th2e Wubi Guide (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/WubiGuide), and I've followed the instructions for "How can I access my Wubi install and repair my install if it won't boot?", but that reveals no problems.For the record, I'm fairly new to linux and ubuntu, but I'm good with computers generally. The main operating system on my computer is Windows Vista, but I'm currently typing this from a Live CD of Ubuntu 9.10. The virtual disk (root.disk), is currently mounted as vdisk, as indicated in the Wubi Guide.
Ideally I would like to get Ubuntu to load as it used to (with a menu). However, if there is a way to boot from the GRUB command line that would be good too. I'm not at all familiar with GRUB, and the commands I've tried (boot and linux, I think), get errors saying no kernel specified, or loaded, or something like that.
I'm doing a kickstart install of Fedora 14 and can't seem to get the php plugins. I've looked through the F14 repositories and I can't find them either. I hope I'm missing something...
View 3 Replies View RelatedI had a dual boot working fine with XP and F12 on two physical drives, all was well. Last night my friend helped upgrade my system, I now have 3 drives (20gig F12) (60gig XP) and (320gig Win7) now the PC only loads Win7 as I think my friend told bios to boot from 320gig. Has anybody here got experience with triple boot from 3 drives? Here is my guess, tell bios to boot from other drive and add Win7 to grub. Not sure how but that's my guess. Also what worries me is that win7 does not "see" the other two drives.

I guess it trys to start to load the initrd, but then it froze, i need to reset the computer. On the TFTP Server (aftp) I see that it trys to resend the initrd files and runs into a time out.
Ive the problem on 2 maschines, both with the same Motherboard (ASUS M4N78).
And the PXEinstallation of OpenSuSE 11.3 works fine, without any problems.
I recently got Fedora 11, I've heard it's not the best distro to learn Linux with, but I'm liking it so far, and having a good time
I've gotten the OS up, network works, and I'm using it now. So I'm trying to get a few plugins and applications and I'm having some trouble. Main two I'm working on right now are Adobe Flash Player and Wine. I downloaded and installed Adobe Flash Player, but it didn't register that I had it on Firefox.
I took my laptop to best buy, and after about a half an hour, they said I was missing these libraries/plugins:

They said they could do it for $100, so I'm trying to do it myself.
I found and tried to install the first one (RPM file), and it said it was incompatible.
I have installed and reinstalled FF many times now and it keeps losing the plugins.

All the text screens look fine, but when it loads the graphic installer, the video gets corrupted, but i have a mouse, but a few seconds later it freezes and hangs, and I can't do anything. Nothing loads. This happens with the livecd's as well.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI completed my dvd-burn for Fedora 10. I booted up from the dvd, and the automatic 10 second installation text shows up. The setup loads the images, and proceeds to a loading bar. After the loading bar I saw an underscore. That all I see.. I wait a couple of minutes and I still only see an underscore. This is my first time trying to install a Unix type O.S. Are there any commands I need to run for the installation to move forward? Or is there some type of corruption in the installation?

I have no idea what the login and password is I've looked all over google and people said it was user: live pass: live or something like that. I've tried a lot of different combinations with no luck. So does anyone know the real username and password for this?
View 14 Replies View RelatedI performed a clean install of Fedora 15 from DVD and it goes fine until the end when the install program says to reboot the computer. Once I do that, the computer hangs before Grub loads, i.e. just after all of the BIOS messages, so there isn't any error message to indicate what is wrong. I had no issues with Fedora 14.

I went to Pidgin website and downloaded Debian package for ubuntu. But got an error while installing. Finally I decided to install it from source package and downloaded it to install. While I try to make configure file by typing
