How do you change the order of the list? I have Xubuntu 9.10 installed on a 5 gig partition. I only use it for Skype as the mic does not work in 10.04 at the moment for me.Anyway, I would like 10.04 to default to the top of the list. How do I change the order when grub loads.

(Just trying it out on a different PC, In case you are confused by my other thread regarding Lenny) So what do I need to do to change the default OS to boot?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a dual boot system w7 and ubunutu. When i had version 10.10 (i think) everything was working fine, the grub would select w7 as boot preference. I have, however just updated to 11.04 and i cant get the grub to change its order. I have tried using startupmanager and selecting the second to last one, as per tips and i have also tried all the options. I have also tried editing the grub file, i think its /etc/default/grub. i have also tried grub-customizer but again, this doesnt work.
I have noticed however that the options shown arent the same as the options when i boot my system. Im not sure whether i have got two GRUBS installed or something like that. I have also tried using boot-repair, however this just states that there is no GRUB installed, however as i mentioned, i can read the grub, and so can the programs.
Just installed 11.04 and do not know how to change the boot order in the new grub.

I want to change the default boot from Ubuntu to windows xp. What file do I need to edit to make that change? In other distros the file is grub.lst but I can not locate that file name in Ubuntu.
I can find the file /boot/grub/grub.cfg that looks like what I need but has a warning "DO NOT EDIT",

From what i can see all the solutions on the web want me to edit the /boot/grub/menu.lst file. The problem is that i don't have one. Someone also mentioned that if i don't have a menu.lst file then i should look for the grub.conf file. I don't have on of those either. The closest thing in /boot/grub is grub.cfg but that looks nothing like the descriptions i have heard of /boot/grub/menu.lst file

I am a linux noob and that is the reason I want to boot my windows xp by default. Now kubuntu boots first. I've googled how to do this but the topics of other people with the same 'problem' were old or maybe incorrect. Because the official GRUB Ubuntu wiki says you should not change the /boot/grub/grub.cfg file manually. The first line on the .cfg file is also a warning: Do not edit this file. So it continued looking for a proper way to change the boot order. Then I found something about etc/grub.d and also etc/default/grub. The problem is I don't understand how to change the boot order using this.

Open your terminal and type in the following:
sudo apt-get install startupmanager
When that is done go to your control panel and you'll have a new icon that says Startup Manager. Every thing you'll need work with your GRUB menu.
I recently installed a 64-bit version of centOS 5 alongside a 32-bit version, which I use. Turns out the 64-bit version absolutely will not boot and I'm stuck with it as my default boot option. Since the grub being used resides on the 64-bit half, I cant edit the menu file but I know theres a way to do this without it, through grub itself. I have about 29 render nodes now with this problem, and whenever they need to be rebooted I have to hook a monitor up to each one and hold its hand through the boot process. How to change the grub menu through grub itself, basically just change the default boot option and then have it stay that way?
View 5 Replies View RelatedThe problem is I've set up a dual boot with Xp and Ubuntu 10.04. Ubuntu was working fine till 2 days back but now when I select Ubuntu from the grub screen i get a whole lot of numbers next which it'll say Usb drive or sd card reader etc.. these go by quickly and then the comp stops running. If i press enter on the keyboard I get Initramfs and then i can type but nothing happens even if I type reboot. if I press cntrl+alt+F2 then i get a blank screen with flashing cursor. Same with recovery mode. Windows boots fine. The grub2 screen comes fine. The last thing i did before this happened is reconfigure the grub2 screen, but it seems to be fine (i had added a background img and reordered the boot options) I did not edit grub.cfg. I would prefer not to reinstall it as iv done it a half a dozen times already in the last few weeks..
View 8 Replies View RelatedIve installed Ubuntu 10.10 from a SD card (yes my laptop supports booting from SD) and it works fine except the grub does not load. Although I know there are many threads about this Im not sure which one to use because my problem is quite strange.
Im not pretending I understand how grub works but I find it strange:
When I boot from Hard Drive, it boots into Windows without loading grub (I installed ubuntu to an empty partition along the windows on the same drive), however, when I force booting from the SD card, I get the grub window with all the options as expected - ubuntu, mem check, windows 7. Now Im not sure if its grub loading from this SD card (containing ubuntu) or the card somehow runs the grub that is on the hard drive.
My guess is that the partition containg windows (sda0) is flagged as boot and thus the system doesnt even look after grub when booting, however, when theres the SD card it somehow forces booting the ubuntu partition (sda6).
Any idea what I should do? I can boot into Ubuntu, I can access grub etc. I just cant make it load without having the SD card in my PC
I'm getting a tad frustrated. Having gone down a dead end on this thread: [URL] I reloaded 10.10, wiping out previous install. Everything was working as it should. I then updated (today, Sept 16, 2011) When rebooted, the system went right to a grub prompt.
View 9 Replies View Relatedi just installed the Debian on my old laptop. The install went fine but after that, the GRUB menu loads and freezes. I simply can't do anything. I checked menu.lst and the timeout is set to 5 but still nothing happens. It won't load. I then tried to load with the "super GRUB disk"but the same problem - as soon as it loads from the CD, it freezes and I can't do anything. Before I had Xubuntu on the same laptop but there was no Grub menu. It simply loaded. There's only 1 OS on the laptop /currently Debian/ - no windows, no other Linux.

I select Ubuntu instead of Windows from the Windows boot loader, but instead of getting the usual menu of different linux versions (I think 2, as I updated it at same point), and Windows, I get the GRUB command prompt instead.I've looked at th2e Wubi Guide (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/WubiGuide), and I've followed the instructions for "How can I access my Wubi install and repair my install if it won't boot?", but that reveals no problems.For the record, I'm fairly new to linux and ubuntu, but I'm good with computers generally. The main operating system on my computer is Windows Vista, but I'm currently typing this from a Live CD of Ubuntu 9.10. The virtual disk (root.disk), is currently mounted as vdisk, as indicated in the Wubi Guide.
Ideally I would like to get Ubuntu to load as it used to (with a menu). However, if there is a way to boot from the GRUB command line that would be good too. I'm not at all familiar with GRUB, and the commands I've tried (boot and linux, I think), get errors saying no kernel specified, or loaded, or something like that.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI performed a clean install of Fedora 15 from DVD and it goes fine until the end when the install program says to reboot the computer. Once I do that, the computer hangs before Grub loads, i.e. just after all of the BIOS messages, so there isn't any error message to indicate what is wrong. I had no issues with Fedora 14.

I have two questions:
1. I had Win XP, I've installed Ubuntu on another Partition, now Ubuntu starts first, can I change XP to be the first one to load ? And how to do it ?
2. When I have to choose from 2 installed systems on the screen I see, Ubuntu, Testmem and Windows XP, can I rename Windows XP title to something else ? And how to do it ?
Using StartupManager (as Quackers had suggested) I do indeed have Windows as my default boot, although it appears at the bottom of the menu. See Dilemma 1 below for that detail.
Dilemma 1:Grub2 has set up the boot menu so that Windows is the last item on the menu. This is because the Menuitem entries for the Ubuntu kernels are generated by script 10_linux, while the Windows Menuitem entry is generated by script 30_os-prober. Of course, in generating /boot/grub/grub.cfg, the 10_linux script is executed before 30_os-prober, dictating the order of their appearance on the menu.
I'd like to see Windows as the top menu item. Under grub, I would edit /boot/grub/menu.lst, pull the Windows menu item out of the "Automagical" section and voila! It stays on top no matter how many times I upgrade the kernel. While I could possibly do the same with /boot/grub/grub.cfg (see thread "how can I change the order of the boot menu?" for the suggestion) we should all know by now that the next time I update the kernel, my changes will all go away, because we are not supposed to edit that file by hand.
Dilemma 2: As I download and install kernel updates, all the old kernels still show up on my boot menu. My concern is that eventually the sheer number of Linux kernels will render the boot menu unreadable. This is especially of concern if I cannot get Windows to the top of the boot menu. Under grub, I used to edit the menu.lst and comment out the listing of any kernels more than 2 versions old. Now, how do I arrange this omission? A manual edit of 10_linux will be acceptable, provided it still displays the 2 or 3 most recent Linux kernels and their corresponding memtests.
