I'm getting a tad frustrated. Having gone down a dead end on this thread: [URL] I reloaded 10.10, wiping out previous install. Everything was working as it should. I then updated (today, Sept 16, 2011) When rebooted, the system went right to a grub prompt.
View 9 RepliesI do not know what to do, i cannot load windows partition. it just loads grub again. this must have been something that happened when i upgraded to the 10.04 or w/e. can someoen help me out with what i can do to stop this or fix it. maybe i can reinstall but i want to know what will work first, i do not have a lot of time to fool with my computer like this again. i spent a week getting ubuntu on my computer the first time so i do not ever want to spend that much time again especially in finals week. !
View 1 Replies View RelatedThe problem is I've set up a dual boot with Xp and Ubuntu 10.04. Ubuntu was working fine till 2 days back but now when I select Ubuntu from the grub screen i get a whole lot of numbers next which it'll say Usb drive or sd card reader etc.. these go by quickly and then the comp stops running. If i press enter on the keyboard I get Initramfs and then i can type but nothing happens even if I type reboot. if I press cntrl+alt+F2 then i get a blank screen with flashing cursor. Same with recovery mode. Windows boots fine. The grub2 screen comes fine. The last thing i did before this happened is reconfigure the grub2 screen, but it seems to be fine (i had added a background img and reordered the boot options) I did not edit grub.cfg. I would prefer not to reinstall it as iv done it a half a dozen times already in the last few weeks..
View 8 Replies View RelatedIve installed Ubuntu 10.10 from a SD card (yes my laptop supports booting from SD) and it works fine except the grub does not load. Although I know there are many threads about this Im not sure which one to use because my problem is quite strange.
Im not pretending I understand how grub works but I find it strange:
When I boot from Hard Drive, it boots into Windows without loading grub (I installed ubuntu to an empty partition along the windows on the same drive), however, when I force booting from the SD card, I get the grub window with all the options as expected - ubuntu, mem check, windows 7. Now Im not sure if its grub loading from this SD card (containing ubuntu) or the card somehow runs the grub that is on the hard drive.
My guess is that the partition containg windows (sda0) is flagged as boot and thus the system doesnt even look after grub when booting, however, when theres the SD card it somehow forces booting the ubuntu partition (sda6).
Any idea what I should do? I can boot into Ubuntu, I can access grub etc. I just cant make it load without having the SD card in my PC
How do you change the order of the list? I have Xubuntu 9.10 installed on a 5 gig partition. I only use it for Skype as the mic does not work in 10.04 at the moment for me.Anyway, I would like 10.04 to default to the top of the list. How do I change the order when grub loads.
View 4 Replies View Relatedi just installed the Debian on my old laptop. The install went fine but after that, the GRUB menu loads and freezes. I simply can't do anything. I checked menu.lst and the timeout is set to 5 but still nothing happens. It won't load. I then tried to load with the "super GRUB disk"but the same problem - as soon as it loads from the CD, it freezes and I can't do anything. Before I had Xubuntu on the same laptop but there was no Grub menu. It simply loaded. There's only 1 OS on the laptop /currently Debian/ - no windows, no other Linux.

I select Ubuntu instead of Windows from the Windows boot loader, but instead of getting the usual menu of different linux versions (I think 2, as I updated it at same point), and Windows, I get the GRUB command prompt instead.I've looked at th2e Wubi Guide (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/WubiGuide), and I've followed the instructions for "How can I access my Wubi install and repair my install if it won't boot?", but that reveals no problems.For the record, I'm fairly new to linux and ubuntu, but I'm good with computers generally. The main operating system on my computer is Windows Vista, but I'm currently typing this from a Live CD of Ubuntu 9.10. The virtual disk (root.disk), is currently mounted as vdisk, as indicated in the Wubi Guide.
Ideally I would like to get Ubuntu to load as it used to (with a menu). However, if there is a way to boot from the GRUB command line that would be good too. I'm not at all familiar with GRUB, and the commands I've tried (boot and linux, I think), get errors saying no kernel specified, or loaded, or something like that.
I performed a clean install of Fedora 15 from DVD and it goes fine until the end when the install program says to reboot the computer. Once I do that, the computer hangs before Grub loads, i.e. just after all of the BIOS messages, so there isn't any error message to indicate what is wrong. I had no issues with Fedora 14.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a new 500GB disk, with a partition with Windows XP, one with Windows 7, one for Ubuntu 10.04, one for /Home and one for swap. The systems were installed in that order. But after finishing with the Ubuntu installation, removing the CD from the drive and restarting, GRUB never showed up, and the system went straight to the Windows OS selector; the one prompting to start Windows 7 or an "Earlier version of Windows". So I can't get to Ubuntu, even though it seems it installed just fine.
As a note: just after the installation process ends and it shows the "remove CD" message, it spilled out a list of I/O errors in some sr0 device or something. But I just installed the same Ubuntu on a friend's computer and it showed a similar error list, yet his system works just fine... However, he doesn't have Windows 7, thus no OS selection screen other than GRUB. I didn't want to rush into editing the MBR or re-installing GRUB before I knew I had to do that.
I have an odd problem. I custom-built a workstation:
MSI Speedster 1 mobo
2x Opteron 2352
4x DDR2 ECC 4GB
3x 150GB WD Raptor, hardware RAID 0
1x 2TB WD Green, standalone
I had Linux Mint 8 installed, but before putting the machine to real use decided to toss Windows 7 on there to see how it worked. Now I am attempting to put Mint 8 back on to get everything set up. There have been no hardware changes since I had Mint installed before.
I can successfully install, but when I reboot I get a Grub error 17. The partition table looks like:
50GB / ext4
400GB /home ext4
...
2TB /backup /ext3
Grub is installed to (hd0), which is the 450GB hardware RAID. It does not make a difference when I run the installation (and then reboot) with the 2TB drive disconnected. Thinking maybe the new ext4 format was messing with Grub, I tried:
200MB /boot ext2
50GB / ext4
400GB /home ext4
And installed again and rebooted. No dice. I'd guess Grub has issues recognizing the hardware raid, except it worked before
I have a dual boot machine (Win XP + Ubuntu 9.10 on separate physical drives) which was working fine. I now want to replace the Ubuntu 9.10 with LinuxMCE which is based on Ubuntu 8.10. Using the LinuxMCE install disk, I did a fresh install of Ubuntu 8.10 over the top of Ubuntu 9.10 (repartitioning the whole drive). On reboot, I now get a Grub "no such disk" error. I did a fresh install of Lucid Lynx, and now when I start up it shows a blinking cursor for a second or so and then my monitor shows an "Input signal out of range" error. The same thing has happened before, and I was able to fix it by editing the boot options in grub to include 'nomodeset'. However, this time the usual grub loading screen where I would normally press esc to edit the boot options doesn't appear. (Spamming esc doesn't seem to work either.) If it matters (which I have an odd feeling that it does) I partitioned the hard drive into an ext4 partition that mounts at / , a swap partition, and another ext4 partition that mounts at /home . I attached a screenshot of what GParted says about it.
View 2 Replies View RelatedMy setup: a work laptop that has a corporate Win7 image, and to which I have added a few partitions to try various linux distributions. The MBR is governed by Lilo from the Slackware 13.37 installation in /dev/sda5. The MBR boots no kernel image directly, it only chainloads the boot sectors of partitions /dev/sda1, /dev/sda5, /dev/sda6 and /dev/sda7. The latter three are formatted ext4.The Win7 boot mechanism traditionally resides in /dev/sda1, and the linux distros are required to install their boot machines into their respective partitions.
What I am trying to say is, I installed Ubuntu 11.04 into /dev/sda7, and told the grub installer the same thing: install yourself into the boot sector of /dev/sda7. Kudos btw for the Ubuntu installer, it comes across as a very professional piece of software.
I recently finished a fresh reinstall of Fedora 11 on my ASUS EeePC 1000HA today. Once I rebooted, it asked for the usual "first time user thing" and I proceeded. After that screen, I was brought to the loging manager, so I logged in, and was presented with my destkop. I fired up the terminal, added myself to the sudoer's file and did a "sudo yum update" but was given the following error (the beginning of the text got cut off due to how lengthy the update list was): [URL].

The Dell instructions are not that helpful. They explain an RPM Install and a DKMS Install - what's the difference between the two?
Bit new to linux but what i saw with gloria in my opinion was a better os than windows. Just done a fresh install with helena on my sata drive and a dual boot with xp pro which is on my on my ide drive my problem is on boot I get to grub loading then boot hangs for 5 minutes before the dual boot screen appears and when it does I can not move up or down to select any options eventually however helena does start.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI had ubu 904 and vista installed on an 80gb drive, i had a spare 80gb drive also. I setup a raid0 config in my bios, then installed ubu9.10 onto it. All was fine until the very end, and then it said grub failed to install.
So i rebooted, and im left with a blinking cursor. How do i install grub? Ive installed ubu a few times now and never had an issue so now im lost.
Followed steps 2-5 and purged/reinstalled grub now it boots as it should, NO idea where it was messed up.[URL].. I had 9.10 running in raid1 and upgraded my hardware (cpu, mb, memory etc) and wanted to do a fresh install of 10.04 to get updated. After following the various guides online such as [URL]...It begins to load grub and drops to a "grub> " shell. Which I have to do the following to get it to boot.

So it was a fresh FC10 install, but it would hang up, and only load if i hit the keypad/mouse, which it still does. Eventually it gets to the shell login screen. root login and i then did a yum update, which got me to the current build. that didnt work. NO x window still.
tried startx again, got me an error. found something that said add "vga=ask" to the grub loader, which still loads into shell, but when i do startx, it made me a xorg.conf.new, which i copied into /etc/X11 rebooted and tried again. still have to move the mouse or keypad for the load to start (no idea y) but it loads to shell, and startx works.
I just upgraded to Fedora 15 this afternoon from the install DVD.

I just installed 10.04 on an Acer 4736 laptop and was prompted for a software update of about 170 MB.
I went through with the update downloads and installation, got an error message of some packages not being found, and clicked on the "close" button on the dialogue to finish with the whole thing.
Now the Update Manager window with the grayed-out package updates didn't go away, and the cursor would always show the "busy" circle thing. I waited for a while, but nothing happened. I tried opening Firefox to check for anything about this on the net, but it wouldn't open.
So I left it alone, and it the screen went black (screensaver, I guess). When I tried to get back to the desktop, I couldn't. Screen wouldn't respond and it stayed black; no password prompt or anything.
Ctrl-Alt-Backspace wouldn't take me back to the login screen either.
I have a VIA Epia M 5000 system with 2 western digital 1TB NAS SATA drives connected through SATA<->IDE adapter. Everything installs and writes as expected except... grub. It never boots, after a message 'Grub loading' I always get 'error: no such disk'. I've tried numerous times and has been attemping to fix the issue for the past 2 days.

I'm writing this from memory but simply the two uuids are different. Is this correct? I get those UUIDs to compare from blkid. All partitions are marked as bootable. grub-install /dev/sda and grub-install /dev/sdb produces no errors. grub-install /dev/md0 does not work, complains about superblocks or something similar.
Grub.cfg file contains insmod raid mdraid1x and similar lines, so that should be ok. Grub drops to rescue mode with message error: no such disk. Not device, but disk. Google finds many results for 'no such device' error, but I am not getting that error. 'ls' produces
(hd0) (hd0,msdos1) (hd1) (hd1,msdos1) ls ANY_VALID_PATH produces empty newline being printed, nothing more.
setting prefixes manually does not work, with error message 'error: file not found'. ls (hd0,msdos1)/boot/grub also produces empty line being printed. Rescue CD and auto-assemble of md0 and md1 works, the files are there, everything okay, except grub.
I just installed debian from debian-live-8.2.0-amd64-standard+nonfree.iso and after installation, which finished without problems, I cannot boot the system. I get the error:

From grub-rescue via ls command I see that I don't have the i386-pc folder inside /boot/grub. I have only two files:
unicode.pf2 and grub.cfg

I have 2 hard disks. sda,sdb
In sda, I have 4 partitions, and I have windows 7 in one of the extended partitions [not in the primary partition].
In sdb, I have 3 partitions. 2 for storage, and 1 10GB drive for Ubuntu. Again, Ubuntu is not of a primary partition.
I had ubuntu 10.04 running on that for a long time. However, I wanted to reinstall ubuntu and use 10.10.This is what I did EXACTLY:Booted from Ubuntu install CD

Selected sdb3 for Ubuntu
I installed GRUB2 on the SAME partition as Ubuntu aka sdb3 Installed then rebooted
I can boot into Ubuntu fine, but whenever I select Windows 7 bootloader from the GRUB menu, the screen goes black, and my PC reboots.

I was installing fedora 13 just for fun and it move grub boot to different partition. Now I can't boot anything but fedora I know I need to be booting from hd0 sa1 but grub loads from hd0 sa7 .I just need my ubuntu os back .
View 2 Replies View RelatedI've been using Ubuntu for more than a year (just basic simple stuff like surfing the net or the occasional document) and in the last months I've been running into the following problem.I've been updating regularly to the latest Kernels the last one should be 2.6.32-25. However at start up Grub loads only 2.6.31-19 and below and there's no mentioning of 2.6.32 in grub.cfg while it is present in menu.lst. I tried to update grub with no success.
View 9 Replies View RelatedWhenever I power on my Xubuntu machine, GRUB does not load until I reboot. Once the system is running, I can reboot back into Xubuntu but if I power down GRUB does not seem to load. I've got the system to power on at 8am every morning but the fact that I have to reboot it is really annoying me.
Update:
Reinstalled GRUB to the master boot record of my first hard disk and it solved everything. I had to follow the second part of this guide to get it to work:

I've installed Ubuntu inside Windows 7 with the Ubuntu Windows installer. I have previously had problems with booting Ubuntu, but it always got to GRUB at least. Now it shows the Windows bootloader, I select Ubuntu and the computer just reboots.
