Still a novice in Ubuntu (Karmic Koala). I'm trying to mount an ext4 20GB partition of my hard drive so that i can use it to store data, i want it to appear on my desktop as well as on places, as far as i know this is achieved by mounting the partition in /media. At my first attempt i used the following commands. (i named the partition ondskapt)
Code:
sudo mkdir /ondskapt
sudo gedit /etc/fstab
in this document i added the following at the end:
/dev/sda4 /ondskapt ext4 defauts 0 0
I am running the latest debian lenny OS and with kernel 2.6.26-2-686. I have a common /data partition for both Ubuntu and Debian which is ext4 file system. I am not able to mount this volume. The error message reads "unknown filesystem type ext4". How do I fix this. I searched the net and there was a link talking about this
I'm trying to set up my Fedora 15 installation to automatically mount (with all privileges needed for read/write access w/o a password prompt) an ext4 partition on the same HDD. Below is the output of sudo fdisk -l.
Code:
Disk /dev/sda: 160.0 GB, 160041885696 bytes 255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 19457 cylinders, total 312581808 sectors Units = sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes
[code]....
Partition table entries are not in disk order I'm trying to automount /dev/sda8, I believe. I'll check that when I've rebooted to by Ubuntu partition, 'cause that's where I know how to do it. I tried to use pysdm, since that's what I used to do the same thing in Ubuntu, but it wasn't found by the Fedora package manager.
i hv 3 os installed ...windows7,ubuntu9.10 and redhat5.3can ne1 tell me how to mount ext4 partition from redhat....because after installing redhat ubuntu is not booting....or can ne1 tell me how can i boot ubuntu by editing grub.config
I have been trying to install windows for 15 days and I was finally able to do it by removing in "disk utility" the sign saying that the fedora partition is bootable... but I did it when the partition was active... It showed me a message error but i thought that it told me it wasn't abvle to do it... and now that windows is installed I cannot any more access the partition either in rescue mode and on a live cd ... what could I do to access the partition either to save all the files or to (it woiuld be the best) reinstall the grub ?
I wanted to make a clone of my drive, so I tried the ole sudo dd if=/dev/sda1 of=/dev/sdg1 trick, but first I formatted the drive to the Ext4 format. I wish I would have understood that format a little more before I decided to format it that way. Now I can't access my drive at all. I read almost everything on the net about manually mounting it, but almost everything was in Fat, NTFS, or Ext3/2 format. I even read the Ubuntu documentation. I don't know if it's because my drive is in Ext4 format, or if I'm just not doing something right.
As you can see in the following picture, it recognizes the drive, yet I am unable to mount it. I am trying to access the 160 GB drive. I even tried to see if Windows would recognize it. No go. Today while lurking in the Ubuntu Forums I found a way to make a live .iso of my system (which I think is awesome). So now I want to reformat my drive and use it as storage once again. I think I will restore it to NTFS. I thought that the Ext4 format would work better in Linux (which I was wrong), but now I need Windows to recognize it as well, and it needs to be able to store files bigger than 4 GB (unless you have a suggestion on what to format it as).
I just installed F13 x86_64 on a system that used to be running Windows 7.
The boot drive is a SATA drive attached to the motherboard which is working fine.
However, my data drive is an NTFS partition filling a 3.6TB SATA raid.
It's GPT--Gparted sees 3 unknown partitions, and gdisk shows:
Code:
How do I mount this in Fedora 13? I had intended to shrink the NTFS partition so that I can create an ext4 partition to move the data to. Will this be possible?
I've got a LOT of valuable data on this drive, and nothing else big enough to store it.
I grabbed the new lubuntu 10.10 from [URL] but it turns out I'm having a problem installing it on my netbook (Asus Eee PC 1015PED). While installing, this error pops up:
Quote:
The attempt to mount a file system with type ext4 in SCSI2 (0,0,0), partition #1 (sda) at / failed. You may resume partitioning from the partitioning menu.I'm installing via USB and have selected the option to erase everything and use the full HDD.
Unable to install Ubuntu 9.10 on a new internal harddrive. The hardrive contains no operating system. This hardrive is the only drive present in the system.
Whenever the installation trys to mount the ext4 partition the following error appears: The attempt to mount a file system with type ext4 in SCSI1 (0,0,0), partition #1 (sda) at /failed
Iv'e tried over and over to get past this error to no avail.
Just installed opensuse 11.3 Kdeversion on my laptop. Before installing it on live mode i had a problem of accessing my other drives (NTFS, FAT32 and EXT4) which said HAL system policy...etc mounting error. I could access all drives with root privilege. I thought problem will be solver once i install opensuse on my system. How ever i was really disappointed after seeing the same problem post install. Googled around for the solution and got this link
[Code]...
After this the problem got worse now i am not able to see any of the drives in the side panel. Gone through many forum and posts all discuss about external USB HDD.
I had 5.4 machine. Upgraded to 5.5 today via yum upgrade. All went fine. Rebooted. Wanted to convert root partition to ext4 (I have three partitions: /boot, / and swap). All of them on software RAID 1 (root is /dev/md2). I did the following for converting
yum install e4fsprogs tune2fs -O extents,uninit_bg,dir_index /dev/md2 nano /etc/fstab # I indicated here that my /dev/md2 is of ext4
I was dual-booting Ubuntu (10.10) and Windows 7. I installed Backtrack in addition to these 2, and the Ubuntu GRUB was replaced with the one from Backtrack.
Now when I boot, only Backtrack and Windows 7 are listed in GRUB. When I run fdisk from Backtrack, I see all partitions, and running a Partition Manager lists the Ubuntu partition as a Linux partition. However, the partition manager says that it is unable to read the contents of the partition, and that it is unable to re-read the partition table.
Also, the Ubuntu, Backtrack, and Linux Swap partition are all listed under the same Extended partition.
I am unable to mount my Windows 7 partition. I receive the following error:
Error mounting: mount exited with exit code 1: helper failed with: [mntent]: line 14 in /etc/fstab is bad [mntent]: line 16 in /etc/fstab is bad mount: can't find /dev/sda2 in /etc/fstab or /etc/mtab
I am unable to mount partition in ubuntu 10.04. Icons for different partitions are not coming within "Places". Every time I have to manually mount the partition or CD or DVD and manually unmount it. Seldom it shows the partition icons within Places>Computer. Then the partitions are getting mounted upon double clicking its partition-icon. But I fail to unmount the partition as it throws the error "media/partition_name is not in the fstab (and you are not root)."
Ubuntu has been complaining about swap not being ready during boot. The swap partition was showing up un-known in gparted. I booted off CD, reformatted it to swap. Error message gone but system monitor > resources shows my swap size to be 86GB (the exact size of my shared NTFS volume). gparted shows the swap partition as not 'swapped on' I am running Ubuntu 11.04 along side Windows 7 (as well as my factory restore partition) and an NTFS shared partition. My partition structure in order of location on disc.
sda1-2 Windows 7 sda4, extended partition --sda6 Ubuntu
Upon trying to boot Windows I got through the GRUB startup selections and then i get stuck at a black screen displaying "Starting Up. . ." That would be no problem, I just boot ubuntu instead and mount the partition to access the programs I'm looking for. Now I get an interesting error message:
"Error mounting: mount exited with exit code 13: ntfs_mst_post_read_fixup: magic: 0x00150000 size: 4096 usa_ofs: 0 usa_count: 1040: Invalid argument Actual VCN (0x15000011d92501) of index buffer is different from expected VCN (0x1). Failed to mount '/dev/sda1': Input/output error NTFS is either inconsistent, or there is a hardware fault, or it's a SoftRAID/FakeRAID hardware. In the first case run chkdsk /f on Windows then reboot into Windows twice. The usage of the /f parameter is very important! I would run chkdsk in windows if I could, but that's my problem in the first place.
had a dual O/S win Vista 64bit & unbuntu 9.10 64bit.
1. Had a virus on my Win vista side, anti virus could help (virus kept replicating itself - to halt all progs from running). 2. In the End Win Vista would start & was only used Unbuntu for about 2 days. 3. Tried to repair Win Vista, but noting worked. 4. Couldn't mount Win partition through unbuntu either - needed to copy some files across. 5. Eventually formatted Win partition side & re-installed Win Vista 64bit. 6. The problem now is that the grub option to select the O/S choice isn't there, thus i can't use Linux. 6b. The computer loads only Win vista 64bit (Like there usn't a Linux) 7.Checked at the disk management prog - could see my linux space but have no access. 8. Used a live Linux cd to access linux partition, just to check - it worked. 9. how can i acccess the Linux O/S as normal?
After re-installing cups to deal with a printer problem, now I'm suddenly getting the message "Unable to mount Windows NTFS", which has all my data on it.
I just installed ubuntu via the windows executable and I couldn't mount my NTFS partition. I found this a little odd and I checked fdisk and it seems to think I don't have an ext4 partition as my entire internal HD is displayed as NTFS.
Here's the fdisk output:
When i try to mount the NTFS partition /dev/sda2 i get the following output:
I can't make heads or tails out of this. Anyone know what's going on here?
Windows recognizes that 30GB were taken from the NTFS partition for my linux install. It reads the max partition size as 465GB. fstab reports the NTFS partition size as 488GB.
Is there a way I can run myProgram when desktop appears no matter if root , administrator, desktop user or an unprivileged user logs in? I actually developed a script which I set to run at startup i.e. when the Desktop appears. Script runs finely but can't mount a partition. In the script I mounted a partition using
Code: sudo mount /dev/sda1 /mnt &> result.txt After executing script a file named result.txt was created which contained Code: sudo: no tty present and no askpass program specified
In other words the mounting failed. If I run the script myself from the terminal using sudo ./myProgram i don't face this problem and the drive gets mounted successfully.
I have a 4gb SDHC card that has been partitioned with an ext2, linux swap, and fat 32 partition that I use in an Android phone. After I partitioned it this way, which I have done more than once with no problems, it quit mounting or being recognized by Android, Linux, or Windows. Windows can tell there is something there but can't mount it, Debian and Android just say it's not there. I need to try to fix the partition table which gparted told me was corrupt the last time gparted could see it.
I have an external 320gb Hard drive. My plan was to have 250gb for My Documents of mainly music, films and word documents. And 50gb set aside for ubuntu, in a separate partition. To do this I need to partition the 50gb partition as ext4? then add a swap file of how big? Do i even need a swap space if I have 4gb of physical RAM?
I have 500GB external HDD. I have to mount it my CenOS -4.8 Machine.(kernel-2.6.9.89EL 32-bit) . External HDD partitions are ntfs file system partition. I have tried to mount ntfs partition in linux . But it's not done.
