I used gparted to format a 360GB partition with ext4 and I expected it to have at most several hundred MB used for whatever reason by the file-system, but it said 18GB were used. How come? Are there any file-system settings I should have paid attention to?

I clean installed Ubuntu 10.10 by shrinking my Windows 7 partition slightly. Now that I want to expand my Linux partition, I shrunk my Win 7 partition from Windows OS. From Ubuntu, the partition manager shows /dev/sda1 contains the Win 7 and unallocated partition. /dev/sda2 contains the Linux and swap partitions. I can't seem to expand my Linux partition (ext4) in sda2 with the unallocated space in sda1. I also can't shift the unallocated space in sda1 to sda2. Any idea how to expand my main Linux partition with the unallocated space?

nano /etc/fstab # I indicated here that my /dev/md2 is of ext4

I originally had an Ubuntu partition on my hard drive which occupied about half of it. I installed Windows 7 in the remaining unallocated space and I was planning on doing a grub update from a live cd afterwards. BUT when I looked at my partition table, the space where the ubuntu partition used to be is now unallocated space!

View 4 Replies View RelatedI just installed ubuntu via the windows executable and I couldn't mount my NTFS partition. I found this a little odd and I checked fdisk and it seems to think I don't have an ext4 partition as my entire internal HD is displayed as NTFS.
Here's the fdisk output:
When i try to mount the NTFS partition /dev/sda2 i get the following output:
I can't make heads or tails out of this. Anyone know what's going on here?
Windows recognizes that 30GB were taken from the NTFS partition for my linux install. It reads the max partition size as 465GB. fstab reports the NTFS partition size as 488GB.
according to the system manager of my machine, one of my ext4 partitions (home folder) reads 7.6GB free but only 574MB available and the disks "fills" when the 574MB are used, and i'm really needing those 7G right now, so:
why does this happen? are those 7G used in anything? any way to allow the system use that free space?
I am running Ubuntu 10.04 amd64. So I have just returned from a week vacation to see that my / is full. When I had left, the ~80G partition was only consuming around 40G of space. I feel like this is a bug and i haven't tried a custom kernel yet to see if it is kernel level. Here is all the good information though to help debug:

I am using a fakeraid with dm-raid on a raid0 for my /dev/mapper discs. I just wonder if anyone else is getting this error or if it is a problem with ext4.
I have an external 320gb Hard drive. My plan was to have 250gb for My Documents of mainly music, films and word documents. And 50gb set aside for ubuntu, in a separate partition.To do this I need to partition the 50gb partition as ext4? then add a swap file of how big? Do i even need a swap space if I have 4gb of physical RAM?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a 6x1TB RAID5 set up for testing on ubuntu created with mdadm and formatted with an ext4 fs.
This is being shared over CIFS for windows clients. When looking at the fs from both the file box and the clients, it says 4.47TiB total capacity, and 4.24TiB free space. The only folder is Lost+Found which is empty.
I don't have much experience in Linux filesystems as of yet and I don't understand where this 300 gigs has gone!
Is it something to do with journaling?
I want to convert a vfat partition into an ext4 partition. This is on my wife's machine and she deleted the Windoze partition as she now prefers Linux. Here is the (edited) output from fdisk -l:-

I want to change /dev/sda4 to 83 to free up space for Linux without losing the partitions in this 'extended' partition!
My root partition was filling up, with only 500 mbs left, I wanted to resize my root partition from 20 Gb to 40Gb
So I resized my partition by using these steps:
Using Gparted to resize another partition to give space for the EXT4 Using fdisk, deleting the root partition (on /dev/sda2), and creating it again using the new size resize2fs /dev/sda2 Updating grub2
But now the problem is that although I can boot in my new partition and the new partition shows it is 40Gb, but the free size was still 500mb. So I booted from a LiveCD and checked with e2fsck -p /dev/sda2, it reported clean. So I added the -f flag (force check), still, the drive is full.
I am running a dual boot system with Win7 on /dev/sda and Ubuntu 10.10 on /dev/sdb
I also have a 250 GB disk I use for storing backup data, /dev/sdc
The two logical partitions on /dev/sdc (/dev/sdc2 and /dev/sdc5) each take up 2.86 GB and I would like to free up that space if possible.
Since the filesystem on /dev/sdc doesn't have an OS on it, does it still require that those two logical partitions exist?
my home partition is an extended one, and when i want to create an unallocated space the space will stay in that extended partition. but there is also an 7 gb unallocated space which i want to merge with the other unallocated space. I also cannot extend that partition over that 7 gb. how can i overcome that problem?

Today I was installing a lot of software since I'm just setting up my Slackware system again after a fresh install, and I realized that my root partition has very little space left.

As you can see, I have a 20G (19G here for some reason) root partition, 8G /var, and 86G of /home. I thought this would be plenty since many recent recommendations for / are 10-15G. Now, though, 17G are used up for some reason! How is this possible? I thought a full slackware install only had about 4G of software! I don't have any music or movies or any crazy huge files that I know of, and those would be in my /home directory anyway. Is there any way I can see which files are taking up all this space?
If it's necessary to allocate more space to my / partition, is it still possible to boot up a GParted live Cd, shrink /home a bit, move some partitions to the right, and expand my root partition? I would REALLY prefer I don't have to reinstall since I just spent a ton of time setting up my system again, but if worst comes to worst ... :'-(

View 4 Replies View RelatedThis weekend, I installed Debian Squeeze on my server. I've formatted all the hard disks to EXT4, and I'm using kernel version 2.6.32-686-bigmem.When I tried to install the program saidar, it surprised me why it does not show my hard drives under 'mountpoint' [URL] <-- Saidar screenshot) as I could when I ran with Debian Lenny with the same kernel, but where the hard drives were formatted in EXT3. My laptop which has Ubuntu 10.04 as OS and the hard drive is formatted in EXT4 can easily show the hard drive in saidar.
I also tried to install PHP SysInfo on the Debian computer, but it does not bother to show anything on the hard disks
I tried to check fstab file and I can see that Debian uses UUID to identify the hard drives, but I've tried to change it to something with /dev/sdx, but it did not help either.[URL] (fstab file)
I know that Debian squeeze is very new, but it would be nice if someone could give me a hint what might be wrong, because I am a little tired of all time to use 'du-hs' command To find out how much space is spent on the various drives, since the command is a little slow, since hard disks are well filled.
so I just installed Squeeze Alpha1 amd64, dual boot with MS Vista using Grub. Everything seemed fine, but I'm apparently missing about 40GB of space. It should be set up as so:
101GB NTFS /dev/sda1 - Vista
12GB NTFS /dev/sda2 - HP Recovery
45GB ext3 /dev/sda3 - / Debian squeeze

I have around 30gb of free space in my partition table immediately before the Linux partition. I want to resize my linux partition to take up this space.
I tried booting with live cd, sucessfully umounted the hard drive but found I could not resize the partition. On clicking the 'edit size' button, partition manager recognised the free space before the partition but when i reduced this, the 'ok' button was greyed out. (it was not greyed out for the windows partition so I could, in theory, increase the windows partition to take up the free space but this is not what i wanted to do).
I am pretty sure that I had managed to unmount the drive correctly as the padlock symbol had dissapeared (I took the attached screenshot, which does show the lock symbol, after rebooting into my normal system).
Anyone got any ideas as to why it wont allow this? There is no reason why i can resize the partition to take up the free space BEFORE it is there?
using onboard windows disk management i have made 75gb unallocated to add to the aforementioned ntfs data partition. but, after resizing extended partition, will i need to fix grub even though i will be adding the unallocated space to a storage partition and not the ubuntu boot partition?

83GB ext3 free space
~10GB ntfs HP/Vista Recovery Partition
~93GB Ubuntu (Hardy Heron)
I tried to just have two partitions (recovery and ubuntu), but because of the different file systems, and the placement of the hp recovery partition, it has to be right in the middle. This is basically what I want to do:
1) Reinstall Hardy Heron on a new (smaller) partition from the free space partition.
2) Once it's working properly, format the rest of the hard drive (getting rid of the recovery partition) and create a single ext3 partition.
3) Install another distro on this new partition.
Does anyone foresee any complications with all this slicing and dicing of my hard drive for which I should/could prepare?
i am following the installation process and its very unclear whether or not a dual boot will occur and how i can make a partition of the free space available from my windows partition etc....i dont want to go through the process and find myself losing all my data and my windows partition i also cant seem to select a partition less than 86% of the total capacity of hdd so im def sure they're not taking my dual boot desires into consideration.

I have decided that keeping Windows is unnecessary and my Ubuntu partition is running out of space. View 6 Replies View RelatedMy debian 5 is up and running smoothly and act as file-server in the middle of windows network jungle using samba the only problem is, after backup an external hdd (213 GB) to my /home partition, I end up with message say that I'm running out free space. Fyi my debian installed on 1TB SATA disk, and I separate my /home partition from system what happen to my free space ? here is screenshot of my disk, using disk usage analyzer: is there is a way to get my space back or something missing on my setup.or I have to reinstall my debian and use LVM when partitioning my disk?
View 8 Replies View RelatedCurrently I have a four partition setup: One ext4 /boot partition for Fedora, one LVM partition, one ext4 partition (which has Ubuntu), and one swap partition. What I would like to do is shrink down the ext4 partition which has Ubuntu on it and increase the size of my LVM parition (and increase the Volume Group, filesystem, etc. within the LVM). However, I've been searching on Google and the only solutions I find is to make the free/unpartitioned space and then create a new LVM partition and stretch the VG over the two LVM partitions. However, I already have 4 partitions, so I can't make the fifth one.
Is there any possible way I can increase the size of the underlying LVM partition itself?
Still a novice in Ubuntu (Karmic Koala). I'm trying to mount an ext4 20GB partition of my hard drive so that i can use it to store data, i want it to appear on my desktop as well as on places, as far as i know this is achieved by mounting the partition in /media. At my first attempt i used the following commands. (i named the partition ondskapt)
