I have been using KlamAV as a good GUI to Clam Antivirus for a while and I like how it is simple and I can do automatic scans every day. I upgraded to 11.04 and it is no longer in the software centre. Is there any way I can install Klam? I have tried the website but their instructions are way too complicated for my beginner knowledge.

Ubuntu :: Comupter Crash After Trying To Install Natty Narwhal Beta?

Apr 25, 2011

I was going to install the Beta for Ubuntu 11.04 using the command update-manager -d. Everything went fine accept the fact that I had maybe two other programs running the same time as the update wich made my computer performance get really high wich ended in overheating and that my computer (using a laptop, of course) shut off. When I started my laptop again it will not go any further than the Ubuntu start screen saying something like "The device / cannot be found or is not ready yet". Can I all my files although I haven't done any backup?

Ubuntu Installation :: Mini Iso Installer Crash - Error "mirror Does Not Support The Specified Release (natty)"

May 24, 2011

I have been trying to use the amd64 version of the natty mini iso installer. The installer crashes with the log stating bad address us.archive.ubuntu.com. This is true for any archive I select. error is: mirror does not support the specified release (natty) Anyone know of a working mirror or if one will ever work? Not a confidence builder in the development.

I also tried the Maveric version of the mini iso. It also crashes with complaints about a bad kernel. So far a wasted day. Just add to this I tried the normal natty iso. The problem is in the manual partitioning. It locks up solid while trying to set partitions. Is there a later release of the iso?

f(f == 0) = [];
set(f, 'DeleteFcn', '')

Ubuntu :: Natty Browser Randomly Causing System Crash

Jul 3, 2011

Whenever I'm browsing the web on one of my natty machines, I'm subject to periodic reboots that leave nothing in the syslog. Here's the two constants I've discovered thus far.

It only happens when I'm using a browser (plugin?).
It doesn't matter whether I'm in Chromium or Firefox.
It doesn't matter whether I use Unity or Gnome 2.
This happens every 2-3 days from what I can tell.
This problem is not power related because I've tested it with and without an UPS present.

The computer does a full reboot without any shutdown procedure.

The configuration of this computer is as follows:
Intel i3 2100
ECS H67 Dual Nic
Haupaugge Dual ATSC Tuner
MDADM RAID 10
8GB 1333MHz (MemTested)

The browser plugins are as follows:
Flash 10.3r181
VLC Multimedia Plugin (compatible Totem 2.32.0)
Windows Media Player Plug-in 10 (compatible; Totem)
DivX Web Player version 1.4.0.233
QuickTime Plug-in 7.6.6

I'm running 10.10, and it's got problems on my new laptop too, and was hoping 11.04 would get me where I need to be. Ubuntu Installation :: Getting BusyBox When Trying To Install Natty From USB?

Apr 30, 2011

I've tried both the DVD and CD, the CD with both usb-creator-kde and unetbootin. The results are the same always, the USB boots, into the splash screen, I select Start Kubuntu, it goes to the loading screen. After some seconds it starts scrolling a wall of text, gives some error about not being able to write or read /root/var/* because they don't exists and end up on a BusyBox with (initramfs) prompt.

I need to install the system on a new disk (2tb) instead of upgrading because I have to send the current one (1tb) to replacement. Could the large 2tb disk be a problem? I tried unplugging all disks and leaving just the disk I want to install to, but no deal... (both are SATA).(Checked the md5sum and they both match for DVD and CD...)

Ubuntu Installation :: No Bootable Device After Natty Install

Apr 29, 2011

I tried upgrading to Natty last night through the update wizard and the install went perfectly... until I rebooted and it got stuck at a screen with an "_" in the top left corner of the screen and nothing else. I guessed that this was a grub problem, so I tried reinstalling grub2, but to no avail. So, I burned a Natty install CD and proceeded to reinstall, formatting the partition (/home was on another partition and did not get formatted). Again, the install went great, rebooted and this time I get "No Bootable Device - Please insert a bootable device and hit enter". So, again, I try re-installing grub2 from the live CD. I purge, uninstall, and reinstall grub2... nothing works! What the hell?

Ubuntu Installation :: Why Is Natty Minimal Install So Much Bigger Than On Maverick?

May 25, 2011

I have a couple of 64bit Maverick installs from the minimal CD.They each have about 1100 packages installed. When I started to upgrade one to Natty with the Upgrade Manager, it told me it wanted to install 205 new packages (along with upgrading 877).205 new packages seems like a lot of growth in the minimal install. Why do I need those 205 packages? Then I looked at the minimal CD page where I saw that the minimal CD itself (which has lists of packages not the packages) grew from 15.6 to 22MB.So, did the minimal install just bloat up with Natty or what? Is there an even-more-minimal install?

Ubuntu Installation :: Install Crash - Either Locks Up Or The Screen Goes Black

Feb 8, 2010

I've been using Ubuntu for about a year or so and have never had any problems installing it up until now.

I can boot from live CD for 9.10, but if at any point I attempt to install it to my hardrive, it either locks up or the screen goes black. Sometimes I'm able to start the installer, but the screen will go blank. The most progress I've been able to make on the install was up to 98% before it locked up, every other time I've gotten a blank screen or a lock up around 40-60%. After a hard reboot I get an error that reads "DISK BOOT FAILURE. INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER"

This problem doesn't only occur with 9.10, but with every other linux distro I've tried on it. My first attempt was with Ubuntu Studio, but I got similar errors. I've searched literally for hours and have found nary a solution that even comes close to solving my problem. using HP Pavilion a404x desktop

Ubuntu Installation :: Crash During 10.04 Install Left System Unbootable

Jun 6, 2010

My son kicked out power during the install phase of 10.04 (about half complete) and now the system is unbootable.

The boot process dies shortly after starting fsck with the error:

init: plymouth main process (382) killed by SEGV signal

So this looks bad (to me), segmentation violations are never good.

So does anyone have any suggestions for booting and completing the upgrade?

If I'm SOL on this OS image is there a way to image over the OS and save my data?

The only option I see now is to buy a new disk, image onto it, mount my current disk and copy my data. (takes money and time)

Ubuntu Installation :: No Video Output After Natty Clean Install With AMD-64 Alternate

Apr 28, 2011

I have a Gigabyte 6A-M61P-S3 with an nVidia chipset, and I'm using the built-in graphics rather than a discrete graphics card. Ubuntu 10.10 and previous releases ran flawlessly on it using the nouveau drivers. I tried doing an upgrade to 11.04 using the Alternate AMD-64 CD, and it seemed to complete successfully, but when it came time to reboot, I had no video output at all after the BIOS screen. This is a test machine, so I went ahead and did a clean install using encrypted LVM with the Alternate AMD-64 CD after confirming that 64-bit 11.04 ran fine using the Live CD.

The installation went fine, but the first reboot flashed a brief "error: no video mode activated" and then I lost all video output. Subsequent reboots didn't give me any error message, but I had no video output. I suspect there are some boot parameters that would have gotten the nouveau driver working, but I wanted to try Unity, so I rebooted to get the Grub menu, chose Recover Mode, selected failsafe graphics, and got to the Desktop, then installed the proprietary nVidia driver (current) and once I rebooted everything was golden.

Ubuntu Installation :: Wubi Install Of Natty Running Unusually Slow?

After doing a wubi install of 11.04 onto my hp g56-116a because of it having all 4 primary partitions in use, natty seems to be running abnormally slow Not throughout, but there's major slowdowns when doing something like opening a new browser window or similar task.

Sometimes it will just spontaneously log out. The slowdowns are so bad the mouse cursor will become completely unresponsive/laggy for 20-25 seconds. My laptop has 4GB RAM and an intel celeron t3500 cpu, which zips windows 7 along speedily, but its running this install a lot slower than my old laptop ran in,with 2GB RAM and a slightly slower processor.

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.10 Nvidia Driver Install Causes System Reboot Crash

Nov 3, 2010

This was my first experience with Ubuntu, I was told to switch the hard drives on my computer and put the Windows drive in a safe place for the install. The first time I did the install on the hard drive (which was the clean second hard drive that came with my computer), I either didn't realize I believe I didn't realize I had to click a button and thought the install had gotten stuck, and therefore cut off the install midway through. The second time around the install went without a hitch, and I was able to boot to desktop once. There, I was notified that I needed/should install NVIDIA drivers, I believe version 173 was listed as the next most recent drives (the other was "current"), I have an NVIDIA GeForce 7350LE graphics card, and after installing the drivers, I went to the restart menu as directed and clicked restart, not shut down but restart, and there were several listed errors on the text/DOS screen, shutdown errors I believe (the errors were 5 digits and were something like 56759 or something like that, I can't be certain if I'm remembering right, though, but there were two errors going over again). I then proceeded to turn off the computer manually, and upon it coming on again, instead of the normal Ubuntu flash screen before login, a more choppy Ubuntu 10.10 screen popped up and it led me to the DOS mode, where I was able to login, but it did me no good because I don't know command logic for Ubuntu. The best I did (its the best I ever do when these things happen) is get menus to pop up that are basically useless. I turned the computer off and on again three times, and tried booting directly from disk, but that failed.

I'm actually using the same computer I just reinserted the Windows drive back in after the frustrating experience. Windows has been giving me problems itself, and I really wanted to switch to Ubuntu but I need to know that this is a fluke and not the norm. I can live with this sort of thing being so uncommon I must have did something that was very strange and out of the ordinary to my computer. But if its commonplace, I want to know that too, because that's just something I can't live with.

Ubuntu Installation :: New Natty VBox Install - Splash Breaks Login Prompt?

May 5, 2011

I just installed a test Natty VirtualBox server from the "mini" iso. After doing that the normal boot always ends with a blank screen and cannot login. The recovery boot option does work normally. After much digging around and various tests I found that the "splash quiet" boot options cause this issue.

I removed them from the /etc/defaults/grub file and ran update-grub. Next boot the login screen came up after as normal. It seems when the splash flashes that purple screen with the Ubuntu 11.04 message it is breaking something and does not get back out of some graphics mode.

This is in a VirtualBox window and I noticed that vesa framebuffers seem to be used by default in grub now. I never had this issue in previous releases and I'm just wondering if others have seen this and if there is a better fix than disabling splash. I don't mind having it disabled as this is a server install anyway and I'm fine with seeing debug messages during boot. If other have seen this then perhaps it needs to be logged as a bug?

4. After that I am shown a snowy green screen with white lines running lengthwise and it freezes.

I already tried creating a new CD and usb stick after re-downloading the .iso installation file and creating the process of creating an installer over and over but still the same problem. Is it a hardware problem or my installer is the problem. I tried installing my old CD of Ubuntu Jaunty that I requested from Ubuntu a long time ago and I can install it without any problems.
