In previous versions, there was an 'advanced' button where you could select NOT to install grub. I can't find that in the latest Natty release iso's. Is it no longer an option? And if not, WHY? I find myself reloading Natty quite often on a test partition to play with various parameters in my attempt to get it working as needed. But I'd really prefer to have the option to no reload grub.
View 9 RepliesI installed Maverick alongside Windows 7. Then I upgraded Maverick to Natty, removed and reinstalled the latest kernel and ubuntu-desktop using Synaptic Package Manager. But now GRUB does NOT show any option to boot into Ubuntu Natty.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI reclaimed the hard drive space on my hard drive entirely for Windows 7 with the intention of installing another hard drive solely for Ubuntu. When I reboot my computer it still gives me the option to choose Windows or Ubuntu. I tried Ubuntu just to see what happens and all that came up was some error and an option to type in help for a list of commands. And if it makes a difference I was running Ubuntu 11.04.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have my machine booting Windows 7, Ubuntu 10.10 (64bit), and OpenSUSE 11.3 (64bit). All good. When I added OpenSUSE it was really easy.There is an option not to install grub. I ticked the box and once installed I simply re-booted into Ubuntu and 'sudo update-grub'. Voila, job done. (Interestingly it uses the same /swap as Ubuntu so that is convenient, an accident, long story, and off topic!) Is there a similar option in Ubuntu where during install I can choose not to install grub and use the same method as I did with OpenSUSE?
Also, I am wanting to use the existing Ubuntu /home and /swap partitions. How do I go about that? I will do some further research on that bit and no doubt find the answer but I'm figuring I create just one partition, /, during install and somehow direct it to use the existing /home and /swap. Issue is, won't it create a /home directory inside the / partition if I don't allocate a /home partition during install?
Reason I'm doing this? I have a Realtek wireless card that has never behaved. I ended up emailing Realtek only to discover the driver/firmware wasn't suitable for 64bit systems. Therefore I am going to attempt to install Ubuntu Desktop 10.10 32bit version and see if I can't get the card behaving there.
I had thought of Virtualbox for doing this (which I have installed but haven't used yet) but decided against it only to save time when booting. I would need to boot the 64bit Ubuntu then the 32bit Ubuntu inside that. Waste of ten seconds!
I installed 9.10, and then upgraded to grub2. This went without issue. I am now in the process of installing 10.10. I have the partitions set up as follows,
sda1 primary 8GB swap
sda5 logical 10gb / for 9.10
sda6 logical 20gb /home for 9.10
with grub2 installed on the mbr of sda. I then added
sda7 logical 10gb / for 10.10
sda8 logical 20gb /home for 10.10
This seems like the best config for a multiboot setup.I was not going to install grub with 10.10, but just boot back into 9.10 and run update-grub. The only options are to install grub on sda, or on one of the logical parts. There is no option in the menu to not install grub.what should I do now?
In the control center under System, I have the option: "Install RELEASE". Why do I have this? Yes, I did have Natty Beta2 previously, but since it's official release today I would assume I now have the Release Candidate installed as I have done all the available updates.

windows 7 and ubuntu netbook edition 10.04. I installed windows xp after running these two OS' for a while to try and fix an issue I had with video playback. However, when I run the pc now it boots straight into xp. I have read the forums about reinstalling grub. However, the first command in the grub shell that locates the HDD doesn't work . Which means the other commands don't work
After upgrading to Natty, my Alt/Win meta key option is no longer working.
I'm using System Settings -> Keyboard -> Layouts -> Options -> Alt/Win key behavior and selecting "Meta is mapped to Win keys".
However the Win key still just pops up the files-and-folders window, and meta is not there.
This worked fine in 10.10. Need this with Emacs...
I'm running Kubuntu natty on grub-efi-amd64. I've just received notification of a bunch of new packages to install, I believe part of it is a kernel update. When I click on "apply" a window comes up which says "Additional changes are required to complete the task". "2 packages to remove" lists "grub-efi" and "grub-efi-amd64". It lists 5 packages to install 3 of which are linux kernel and 2 of which are the bios version of grub.
How can I update my system without having efi-grub removed?
I'm running Ubuntu 11.04 and Windows 7 on a Dell Inspiron. On boot I get the GRUB menu listing Ubuntu (+ old versions) and Windows 7. However, if I boot Windows 7 all is fine until I reboot. On this next boot GRUB is gone and Windows boots. Ubuntu is still there, I can get into using my live-cd and 'repair' GRUB. After that, on booting GRUB is back and fine (including Windows 7). Does any one have an idea how to fix the booting/GRUB thing more constructive?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have 6 hard drives that have 9.10 and 10.04 on them. Not as a dual boot, but some hard drives have different versions on them. When I have plugged the drives in a couple of weeks later, the grub is gone and system will not boot. I get like a grub 1.5 error and that is all the options I have. Does anyone one know why this happens? Nothing on the drives but the O/S to get rid of windows. All drives worked perfect until they were removed and installed later.

partition setup:
sda1 : primary : swap
sda2 : primary : ext3 : Kubuntu
sda3 : primary : ext3 : opensuse (flagged as bootable)
sda5 : logical
sda6 : logical
opensuses GRUB is primary and Kubuntus is chainloaded.
The problem occurred after I tried to boot kubuntu for the first time since I installed opensuse. Kubuntu didn't boot. so I probably set up chainloading wrong. No big deal, this I can fix.
The big problem was that after trying to boot Kubuntu no OS was marked as "Boot" in MBR. This is VERY strange. somehow the boot-flag is removed!
After setting the boot-flag (with a live-CD) everything works again. I can reproduce this.
I've tried to find answers but could'nt find any.
Is GRUB supposed to remove the boot-flag when chainloading? have I found a bug?
I've been using Debian for a few years but always on dedicated boxes and/or VMs.
Finally decided to dual boot Debian and Windows on my main Desktop PC.
Installed as I normally would using, however this time using a seperate drive (one for the existing Windows 10 install and the other for Debian), Debian install detects that windows has an EFI partition and sticks an entry in there, which is fair enough, and everything working fine. Then I spent some time configuring all my software and set it all up just the way I like it. I've rebooted Debian a few times to check it's working correctly and it is.
The issue arrives when I reboot and load into Windows 10. It boots fine.
However after a further reboot GRUB no longer loads... and the machine just boots directly into Windows 10.
After doing some further digging into my EFI partition (and reinstalling various times) it would appear that after a reboot Windows 10 deletes the entry GRUB creates in my EFI partition after EVERY reboot.
Done some googling and most people advise turning off 'fast boot' in Windows as it locks certain partitions to facilitate the machine going into hibernation, only to find that it's always been turned off on my machine (I recall due to a driver issue with my graphics card this had to be turned off when I installed Windows 10).
I've found this article on the Ubuntu forums : [URL] .... however I've tried their steps and windows is still doing a hostile takeover of my EFI partion after a reboot!
Any way to stop Windows 10 from interfering with my EFI files after a reboot? (without doing the obvious thing and kill Windows off).
I've played around with both Unity and Gnome 3 and I love them both. I've decided for now I'm using Unity on my laptop but I was thinking I'll use Gnome 3 on my desktop for particular reasons (I may switch to Unity if I find I'd like it better). My question is, if I install Gnome 3 via the ppa, wouldn't compiz no longer be supported with Gnome 3? Matter of fact I probably wouldn't use anything from compiz even if it could. Hence would it be safe to remove unity and all of compiz or do things in Ubuntu still depend on them? I also wouldn't want them still running in the background or anything. Perhaps now that Ubuntu decided to go the Unity way, that they should support a Gnome-shell build? Like Kubuntu/Xubuntu, even though regular Ubuntu still uses Gnome.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have an old Dell Dimension 4500 that, until recently, had 2 hard drives. One drive is running Xubuntu Koala and the other was running XP. I had set up Xubuntu to run LVM.
After needing XP again for a small project I tried reinstalling XP, got disk errors, took the drive out to just have Xubuntu, and now when I boot I get "Error loading operating system".
I have tried restoring GRUB from a Live CD with no help. Everyplace I look on the net talks about restoring GRUB after installing Windows on another drive. I'm trying to get GRUB working again after removing the XP drive.
I am able to install 11.04 (64bit) on my MBP, but after installation I cannot boot into it.[URL]...

when I go to download 11.3 I am presented with the installation medium for a DVD installation with a button that says download DVD. Should there be an option to download an ISO option for a CD installation on this page along with the DVD version? Some of our older machines can only read CD's with a max size of 500+ megs.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI upgraded to Natty yesterday and my system boots into it ok but I don't get a grub menu (and so no other options like recovery mode which I really need right now). I tried purging grub and re-installing it on /dev/sda but still no joy. Here's the info from the Boot Info Script. I've also tried uncommenting GRUB_GFXMODE=640x480 in /etc/default/grub but that doesn't help. How I can get the menu back?

I've had this problem on a couple of Ubuntu server upgrades and am keen to get to the bottom of it. Basically, with an Ubuntu 10.10 server installtion where LVM has been used, running through the do-release-upgrade process works perfectly until the reboot stage. Then grub complains with "no such disk" and dumps me out to the grub shell. From here, I can see (from ls) the following:

I can enumerate the filesystem on (hd0,1) which seems to contain the /boot filesystem and the filesystem on (hostname-root) seems to contain the / filesystem.

4 x 500 gb hard drives in (software / onboard controller) Raid 10 (1 +0) with Windows 7 x64 as the primary OS
1 500 gb hard drive with Ubuntu 10.10 installed
After upgrading to Ubuntu 11.04 Beta, I hit the Grub Error. I have removed the 5th HDD but still getting it on boot into Windows 7. I am currently in the process of copying all files from my raid via a 10.10 flash drive boot (fortunately was able to mount my raid's partitions).
The upgrade finished, did a y to reboot and it boots to memtest, no sign of the grub screen at all.

When I first boot up. I get the GRUB command line. What happened to the boot menu? And I can boot up into my Windows partition just fine. But when I try the other partitions i get "Unknown file system" or when I try to boot into the other ntfs drive, I get "BOOTMBR missing", but yet it does not mean Windows, because i can boot that just fine. I can't find my Ubuntu partition. How can I get the GRUB boot menu back?
View 1 Replies View Relatedi have lucid lnyx installed as my main system and added natty on a seperate drive. after installing, the new grub detected lynx & i was able to boot into each without any problem. after doing some tweaking on natty (changed run level), it didn't boot properly so i reverted to the old config via rescue disk. after rebooting, the old grub menu didn't show & it loaded lynx automatically.
i tried the suggestion from another post changed the hidden menu and updated grub but it didn't detect natty (below).

I got a system crippling virus on my windows installation. My recovery disks gave me the same problem. So I installed Win 7 enterprise using a disk my dad got from his work. The installation went smoothly. When I started my computer after it went straight to Win 7 without the GRUB bootloader (not the case with restore disks). Could somebody please help me with this issue because I cant stand using Windows for anything other than games much longer.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI had my Laptop, a Dell Inspiron 1520, running Windows 7 and Windows XP - I had a few gigs of unallocated space, so I decided to install Kubuntu alongside it, worked fine no problem, with the exception of running out of space very quickly - I got fed up with it, and installed Kubuntu over the Windows XP partition (around 80gigs, and the first OS to be installed on the computer). After I installed it.
All was working perfectly until I rebooted to discover I am missing my Windows 7 boot option in GRUB, before I had to press Windows XP Embedded and it opened the boot dialog, but here I dont get the option, is there a GRUB 2 option I can change to allow it to show Windows 7? The Computer works perfectly, it's just the GRUB doesn't show Windows 7, and I'm hesitant to format its old partition and reinstall it due to the fact that it may over ride the grub and leave me without Kubuntu access?
my Setup is Fedora 14 x64 + radeon hd 4830 i've downloaded .run package from ati site with latest driver for x64 systems. installed it, but didn't edited grub.conf becouse i didn't understood anything there (probably didn't spent enough time to get things understand) Now i've lost possibility to enter my Fedora system. during boot it lost it's modern blue boot screen (with filling drop), it was replaced by standard old boot screen with triple-color stripe. after this boot screen monitor start blinking going on and off. and on last step i'm getting "Fedora 14 boot bla bla bla something" on screen. nothing works except Ctrl+Alt+Delete. system reboots showing successful daemons shutting sequence. How can i edit grub menu from initial grub screen is it possible to it's own 'e' option or 'c' from grub command line?

In fact, it seems to follow only the contents of grub.cfg.I have tried running sudo update-grub, and it does work, but does not resolve the problem.

Both systems used Wubi installations of Ubuntu 10.04 Desktop for x86 on Windows XP. In both cases, Ubuntu completed the installation process. Upon reboot, we have the options to choose between Windows XP and Ubuntu. However, once we enter into Grub, only the Windows XP option shows.
