Ubuntu :: Natty Xserver Crash And Matlab?
Aug 12, 2011
I'm having troubles with ubuntu Natty."Randomly" I'm thrown out back to the log-in page; I saw some threads online talking about xserver crashes but I didn't find any solution.I noticed it happens more often (but not always) when I use this matlab code to delete all the matlab figures.
Matlab code (not mine):
-----------------------
f = findobj(0);
f(f == 0) = [];
set(f, 'DeleteFcn', '')
f = findobj('Type', 'figure');;
[code]...
I have a Radeon HD 6370M with proprietary drivers.

Recently upgraded to 11.04 - everything was working well in 10.04. However, running programs in wine (or running wincfg) now causes the xserver to lockout after a random interval. At best, I get dumped back to the gdm, at worst it needs a hard reboot. I've tried using wine versions 1.3 and 1.2, but both cause the same problem. I've also tried installing ldfontconfig from 10.04 as I read that this was a resolution for people having similar issues, but no joy.
I'm running 64 bit ubuntu, and have an ati graphics card
This is a real deal breaker for me - I need MSOffice, but really don't want to go through the hassle of downgrading to 10.04.

my OpenSuse 11.3 worked absolutely perfect - till now ! It suddenly started not to load KDE, but instead prompts the login screen. When i then log in, it just crashes after a minute or so. I tried to boot in IceWm and it appeared more stable to me, but when i opened a programm like firefox or gimp, this Environment crashed too.

I run an old Toshiba Satellite M35x S114 Laptop with Debian Testing, it always runned smoothly - although it IS testing . Since the latest update to kernel 2.6.32 , the X server just freezes. The init goes all the way to gdm, and then a blank screen , no mouse pointer, no way to get out of this screen (not CTRL+ALT+BACSPACE not CTRL+ALT+F1 / F2 ... etc) just a hard reset.
I can boot to the older .30 kernel with absolutely no problem, gdm starts normally login successfull (as I am able to write this on the reffered machine and all).
Here comes the gory details:
>>> The graphic card:
lspci | grep gra
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82852/855GM Integrated Graphics Device (rev 02)
00:02.1 Display controller: Intel Corporation 82852/855GM Integrated Graphics Device (rev 02)
>>> When it works with .30 kernel:
cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log
code....
Noting that there are no more Modlines in the new Xorg.0.log
Besides, X is disabling the mouse and keyboard in the configuration.

I just upgraded to Natty Beta 2, and when I tried to login, I was told that /tmp/2145539930/.kde/share/config/kdedrc is not writable (along with tmp/2145539930/.kde/share/config/knotifyrc is not writable). When I run ls -l, I get
Quote:
-rw------- 1 kdm nogroup 39 2011-04-16 19:55 kdedrc
I can dismiss the dialog box, and after a few seconds of delay, see a crash report that kdeinit4 seg faulted. I dismiss this and log in to see plasma not running, but I can Alt+F2 any command I wish (except plasma-desktop, it doesn't run). I already purged kdm and reinstalled, and I'm trying plasma-desktop now.

I installed Natty Narwhal yesterday and everything was fine.Today, however, I installed some updates.I tried restarting my computer but it never gets to the desktop.It keeps crashing and looping back, if that makes sense.I can't start in fail-safe graphics mode either.

I was going to install the Beta for Ubuntu 11.04 using the command update-manager -d. Everything went fine accept the fact that I had maybe two other programs running the same time as the update wich made my computer performance get really high wich ended in overheating and that my computer (using a laptop, of course) shut off. When I started my laptop again it will not go any further than the Ubuntu start screen saying something like "The device / cannot be found or is not ready yet". Can I all my files although I haven't done any backup?

Since I upgraded to Natty, XBMC produces a crash log when I exit.I have searched for forum entries but not found any. I use a Gigabyte GA-880GMA-UD2H DDR3 AM3 board with a Athlon II X2 processor, with on-board graphics, HDMI output.
(XBMC seems to work while running, however)

Whenever I'm browsing the web on one of my natty machines, I'm subject to periodic reboots that leave nothing in the syslog. Here's the two constants I've discovered thus far.
It only happens when I'm using a browser (plugin?).
It doesn't matter whether I'm in Chromium or Firefox.
It doesn't matter whether I use Unity or Gnome 2.
This happens every 2-3 days from what I can tell.
This problem is not power related because I've tested it with and without an UPS present.
The computer does a full reboot without any shutdown procedure.
The configuration of this computer is as follows:
Intel i3 2100
ECS H67 Dual Nic
Haupaugge Dual ATSC Tuner
MDADM RAID 10
8GB 1333MHz (MemTested)
The browser plugins are as follows:
Flash 10.3r181
VLC Multimedia Plugin (compatible Totem 2.32.0)
Windows Media Player Plug-in 10 (compatible; Totem)
DivX Web Player version 1.4.0.233
QuickTime Plug-in 7.6.6

I have been trying to use the amd64 version of the natty mini iso installer. The installer crashes with the log stating bad address us.archive.ubuntu.com. This is true for any archive I select. error is: mirror does not support the specified release (natty) Anyone know of a working mirror or if one will ever work? Not a confidence builder in the development.
I also tried the Maveric version of the mini iso. It also crashes with complaints about a bad kernel. So far a wasted day. Just add to this I tried the normal natty iso. The problem is in the manual partitioning. It locks up solid while trying to set partitions. Is there a later release of the iso?

I've been trying to install Matlab r2008b but with no sucess.here are the commands i ran.
sudo mkdir /usr/local/matlabR2008b
cd /usr/local/matlabR2008b/
copied my files to tmp folder and run
sudo sh /tmp/MATHWORKS_R2008B/install
here is what i get at the terminal
Code:
An error status was returned by the program 'xsetup', the X Window System version of 'install'. The following messages were written to standard error:

Attempt to fix the problem and try again. If X is not available or 'xsetup' cannot be made to work then try the terminal version of 'install' using the command:

I'm suddenly having an odd problem after running Matlab successfully on my 10.10 system for a while.When I try to open Matlab now with
Code:
matlab -glnx86 -desktop
matlab only opens in console mode and doesn't load the jvm desktop. It doesn't report any errors. The command
Code:
version('-java');
gives no response.
If I try to run a command in the console such as plot, I get the following warning: Code: Warning: This functionality is no longer supported under the -nojvm startup option So, matlab is somehow starting with the -nojvm option even though I'm explicitly telling it not to with the -desktop flag. I don't know how this has suddenly changed today. When I first set Matlab up on Maverick a few weeks ago I followed https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MATLAB to get the java stuff working properly. Does anyone have ideas on where -nojvm might be implicitly set or log files I can access to give me more info on why this might be happening?

I have installed matlab 7.9 in ubuntu 9.10. I tried to launch it on the desktop using launcher. But as I double click on it it flashes but its not opening. After seeing previous posts somewhere it is given that matlab-desktop should be used. But I am not clear where to use it. How to create a desktop icon for matlab. It got solved by adding -desktop at the end of command.

I have installed Matlab into /opt/matlab and the file to run the program is located in /opt/matlab/bin and is called matlab. I created a file:
#! /bin/bash
/opt/matlab/bin/matlab
and placed it in /usr/bin.
From there, I can run matlab by typing 'matlab' in a Terminal window. My problem is that I created a link in my start menu with the command 'matlab' but all I get is the splash screen for 5-10 secs then the program crashes out. However, when I run it from a Terminal, it loads up just fine.
