But if I have firefox already up and running it will open as tabs of the firefox I already have running. How can I open the multiple pages in a new window in this case?
- Using -no-remote could work, but I would have to make a whole different firefox profile for each set of pages, not really a solution. - Also tried setting it to a particular display and it opened as a tab again. ie. firefox [URL] -display=":0.0"

Jun 7, 2010I use firefox3.6.x, and i play online video (sockwave flash) often, but while opening the page (often has swf), the whole X restart, and back to login window of gdm. The problem not accured everytime i open the page, but very often. I met this problem both in ubuntu 9.10 and 10.04, and also lubuntu 10.04. So, i fall back to use firefox 3.5.9, and evrything seems fine.

Sep 24, 2010When I VNC into my CentOS server I am always met with the usual GUI and an annoying terminal window. If I try to close the terminal window it reappears immediately. I can only minimize it to the taskbar. Am I missing a simple setting to disable this?

Jul 27, 2011I use Mathematica 7.0 through my school's SSH server. This involves:
-loading their font server via "xset fp+ tcp/c1.ucalgary.ca:7100"
-connecting to the SSH server via "ssh -X useruser@servername.ca"
-entering my password Then I choose to run Mathematica via ". use mathematica 7" then to load the GUI "mathematica".
Sometimes, and only sometimes, the screen goes to the error in the attached picture, stays there for about 5 seconds, brings me to the login screen. When I log in again, all of my applications that were running, open folders, and my terminal windows are closed.

Sep 17, 2009I was trying to download MOPSLinux from their Russian FTP server, using Firefox-->FlashGot-->KDE-Kget and it kept sitting there for about a minute, then popping up a dialog box asking for a Username & Password to access the FTP site.
I tried the usual anonymous type of login information combinations, to no avail; the box kept reappearing.
Finally for the heck of it, I tried Firefox-->FlashGot-->Wget and presto! It began downloading right away, no questions asked.
This is on Slack64 with the stock KDE installation + the KDE3 compat libs.

I've just installed all of the packages in disks 1 and 2 of the slack 12.0 distro so, among them, I have the slack series kde/ installed. I run xfce as the desktop environment, which is able to run KDE apps. In main menu>Network there is kget, a download manager and also supposedly a p2p client. I ran it and it said "It is the 1st time you run kget. Do you want to make the default download manager?". I replied "No". As nothing happened I restarted X (the startx command ends up running xfce), ran kget again, and it made the same question, which this time I answered in the affirmative.
Again nothing happened. So I tried to download some file from the web, in the hope that a kget window would open. But no window opened nor anything else happened! In the console, I did 'ps -e' and there it was, however. So I began the search for documentation. First I ran khelpcenter, and was presented with the kget help. It was all about menus. However, typing kget --help-all in a console, gives almost two screens of information. And I tried several commands, from the GUI, following the syntax displayed by this command, but it was no use. So, I finally had to fall back on LQ, like so many times.

Oct 12, 2009I have a problem that I'm not sure how best to debug. About every other time when I boot my system, I get a condition where listing the files in /root locks up that xterm session.This can be cleared by opening another xterm window and killing the listing command. This happens on "ls -a", "find", "tar" and I think "stat" also. The locked up xterm echo's chararcters but does not respond to any control sequences. This is new with FC11.This has only been seen to happen for root. And once a system is booted with this problem it seems to persist until you get it booted without the problem.

Dec 27, 2010I just installed FC14 on 2 different PCs. It takes over 40 seconds for either of them to open some webpages, ie amazons home page. It is not my internet connection. I can open the same webpage on both my Windows PCs in less than 5 seconds. I was using FC9 up until 1 month ago, and I believe it took about 15 seconds to open amazon, but I never actually timed it. I spend many hours a day on the internet and have used FC for many years. I have been very happy with it. Until now. My PCs are 1.8GHZ single processor and 2.4GHZ dual processor. Do I have to revert back to FC9 to fix this, or use a different distro?

What I want is my window controls to be on the right side of the window when the window is in full screen mode.
Also I've had an issue with the Unity dockbar glitching out. I can still click on the buttons (i.e. the logout button) but it displays like a nintendo game inserted crooked. Is there a way to 'restart' unity without log out/ log in?
Any one else experienced any glitches with unity auto hiding/showing?

But since after upgrading to to the first release this year and a complete new installation of the current release Maverick i do not find this option anymore. Jan 16, 2011If you don't know, users are able to quickly resize windows using the "ALT+MiddleClick" key shortcut/combo. Basically, hold the ALT key, and mouse middle click and hold on a window. Move the mouse around, and it will resize the window for you.
STEPS TO REPRODUCE:
1) Open a single Window.
2) Near the bottom-right-hand corner of the window, ALT+MiddleClick and drag. It should resize. Great. It works.
What Doesn't Work:
Now, the problem arises when you have multiple windows open on the desktop, they are "layered". i.e. you might have several windows open "behind" the one currently "up front". Example:
If I try to ALT+MiddleClick the "foreground window", it rarely actually resizes THAT window, and instead jumps one of the windows from behind to the front, and resizes that one instead!
STEPS TO REPRODUCE:
1) Open 3x gnome-terminal windows and say some nautilus window. Place them overtop one another. (like the above image)
2) Try to ALT+MiddleClick the foreground window.
3) Repeat this always trying to grab the foreground window.
For me, the window manager seems to bring some window from the background to the front! Desktop Recording of the Problem: [URL]
