I have been having trouble getting Thunderbird to open links within my emails. When a link is clicked there is no response at all. I am running firefox version 3.6.2 and Thunderbird 3.0.3. After surfing the interweb and the forums I have tried setting the default browser through Firefox itself and through the preferred applications GUI in Ubuntu with no luck. I have gone into the about:config for Thunderbird and added the following lines:
network.protocol-handler.app.http /usr/bin/firefox
network.protocol-handler.app.https /usr/bin/firefox

A long time ago Thunderbird had a plugin that blocked any message from being opened when the one viewed is deleted. It stopped working when the next update of Thunderbird came out, and I cannot remember it's name. The current version usually leaves a blank window when I delete, but sometimes will open a previously unread message. I normally delete spam before starting to read. If I have missed deleting a spam message it can be opened without clicking on it.
Recently I got stung by a sleeper. The messages were sent to addresses that have not been in the address book, and with a From name that has not been used for weeks. I have no idea when or how it was activated. Possibly one of the auto-opens. How do I prevent Thunderbird from automatically opening *any* messages?

Have recently setup Samba on a fresh install of Fedora 14 so that I can use it as a workstation in a Windows 2003 (win2k3) domain.
The install of Samba seems to have worked as I can connect to the Domain using ADS and kerberos. selinux and firewall have been disabled until I have it working 100%
The problem lies when i try to login to Gnome or TTY. It begins to create the home directory for the domain user logging in but after a certain process Fedora logs the user out of the system.
Have looked through several log files (/var/log/messages, log.winbindd, log.winbindd-dc-connect) but am unable to debug it any further.
Have posted the config files below which shows the Fedora machine is successfully connected to the domain as it lists its groups, users and validates logon credentials - it just won't logon!
Where i can go about debugging. Also if you need additional configs.

I use firefox3.6.x, and i play online video (sockwave flash) often, but while opening the page (often has swf), the whole X restart, and back to login window of gdm. The problem not accured everytime i open the page, but very often. I met this problem both in ubuntu 9.10 and 10.04, and also lubuntu 10.04. So, i fall back to use firefox 3.5.9, and evrything seems fine.

I'm currently using Slackware 13.0 and have my machine behind a Linksys DD-WRT router. I believe the DD-WRT software has all ports blocked by default so opening up my machine for SSH login would only leave my system vulnerable at that port. To give an extra layer of security for that opened port, I've created the following script that would be invoked as the users' shell.
#!/bin/sh
#if SSH_CLIENT defined run nail with $SSH_CLIENT as an argument
if [[ -n ${SSH_CLIENT} ]]; then
[code]....

I used Likewise (specifically, likewise-open-gui) to add my computer to the Windows domain at work. I can log into the computer with my domain credentials.
Until I reboot.
If the computer ever shuts down fully, I get an authentication failure when I log in using the domain account. But if I log in using a local account and run likewise-open-gui again from there, everything works. I don't have to rejoin the domain, only launch the program, close it, and log out of the local account. This seems to allow me to log into the domain afterward.
Is there something in specific that I can add to my startup scripts that will connect me to the domain before login?

I'm trying to integrate my Ubuntu PC into an Active Directory domain using Samba, Kerberos and Winbind. The task I'm trying to accomplish now is to automatically connect user folder from DFS server when domain user logs in. I created a simple (contains one line ) script to do that:
Code:
#!/bin/bash
mount //<server.domain>/Users$/$1 /media/dfs_user -o rw,user=<domain>\$1
I need to run this script with root privileges and parameter $(whoami) after domain user logs in so it results in command:
Code:
mount //<server.domain>/Users$/<username> /media/dfs_user -o rw,user=<domain><username>
What should I do? Is there any other better way (seems little unsecure like this)? I was thinking about adding this into /etc/fstab file, but don't know how to tell it what is the actual name of logged in user... I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 x32.

With Kerberos it's possible to join and login in Windows domain. The easiest way to do is this or I think so...
When installing likewise-open, it installs Kerberos also. I have no idea what are those realms and other stuff. There's some guides (also by Microsoft!), but it's gibberish for me. My native language isn't English, so half of those words go in one ear and out from the other.
I'm running Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise SP1 and I'm able to join the domain with my Windows clients. Now I want to join with Ubuntu but I have no idea what to do.
Like what's FQDN how to find out domain's FQDN Whats Kerberos realm and what it should contain how to install Kerberos correctly and so on

I have a 'special script' in my .bashrc file, which I want to be performed only at Login. When I open a terminal (through a gnome launcher <gnome-terminal> as the command) it unfortunately sources .bashrc.
Hence the opening of the terminal runs the 'special script' again.
How can I instruct .bashrc not to do something except when and only when I am logging in? I found a segment of code which is supposed to do what I want but I am not sure of how it works.
Code:
Will this work to put my 'special script' in to ensure that it only runs when it is a login script and not when it is a simple launcher terminal opening?

I've just rolled out about 60 ubuntu 10.04 desktops. All of them are joined to our windows domain using likewiseopen.
At the gnome login screen, the users have to click "other" and type in their windows username and password.
Is there any way to bypass this and just have the username displayed?

I did a fresh install of the netbook version of 10.10 on a Gateway CX2618. I ran all updates and then rebooted. I installed LWO 5.4 from the repository and joined the domain. I put in a kerberos realm (same as my domain) but I don't know for sure if I have a kerberos realm. I successfully joined the domain with the GUI. I rebooted, per instructions.
I tried to login with domain username and password (DOMAINusername). It takes a couple seconds to think and then kicks me right back to the GDM login screen. I have tried several times with the same login and have tried other domain users. It doesn't say "authentication failure" but I should have tried to use the wrong password to see if it would do the same.
I'm stumped. Is there a ppa I need to add? Is Likewise-Open supposed to work with the maverick netbook edition. I saw the previous notice on the Likewise site about OpenLDAP but I thought that was resolved in the updates and no longer in effect. Should I install LWO 6.0? If so, from where? From a ppa somewhere? From the Likewise site?
I can still login with a local admin account.
My ultimate goal is to automatically mount network windows shares for various students, based on their login credentials and using CIFS. I almost had this figured out before this fresh install.

I have Ubuntu Server installed in one machine and ubuntu desktop in 3 more machines. What I would like to have is, authenticate the clients using a central user DB and also the home folder for a user should be available in any client machine in which he logs. I see that openLDAP takes care of authenticating clients but what application to use to mount the user's home folder from the server to the client machine on logging.

I joined my Ubuntu 1004 LST to Windows 2003 AD.
it always frozen my ssh login window when the DC crashes. when the DC crashes, the putty won't give me the password prompt and will go inactive directly after a while no matter what username(local or domain users) I give
is it possible to avoid to check domain users before it gives me the password prompt? or, we can make it to check if the user is a local user first?

I have set up Samba to act as a domain login for a Windows 7 PC. The Windows 7 PC has the two correct registry compat entries.
So, I've added "root" to smbpasswd and the Windows machine tries the "LINNIS" server. Authentication is successful, as stated in the Samba log but the Windows machine fails with the following:
"The specified computer account could not be found. Contact an administrator to verify the account is in the domain. If the account has been deleted, unjoin, reboot and rejoin the domain."
I feel like I'm doing something dumb, but the authentication passed so what is it talking about?

I planned to use Squid on my W2k3 network, because I'm tired of ISA2k6.it's a factory in itself. So, I just installed a VM with OpenSuse 11.2 and joined it to my AD W2k3 domain. After correcting the clock problems, everything is running fine except a strange feature that I was not able to solve. After a reboot, I'm not able to login with a domain account. I enter the username/password, choose the domain then it the input fields become grey for 1-2 seconds then the password field is reset and nothing happens. The most strange part comes when you logon with the local root account. You login as root, then logoff and login with any domain account : works like a charm..

I also rejoined a couple of the computers back to the domain successfully (it was not an instaneous join, it took a good minute or 2 to join each pc). Now I cannot cannot login to any of these computers with the domain credentials. I can share using the UNC path no problem and this was working find about 1 week ago.

Thanks to Lucid not working properly on i845, i855 and other 8xx chips, had to re-install Karmic on my mum's computer.I saved all the data from her old install and I ve managed to get all her old emails from thunderbird, but I cant import her address book.In Thunderbird/tools/import/addressbooks it only allows importing of LDIF, .tab, .csv and .txt files, but I cant find any of these files in any of the Thunderbird, .Thunderbird, Mozilla-Thunderbird or Mozilla folders in Home folder or anywhere, all I can find is "abook.mab" which IS supposed to be her address book, but when I try and import it the entries are blank and/or indecipherable (prob cos not a compatible file type).
Its one of those "simple" things to do, thats taken hours and hours of time, but that I cant actually find out how to do.

I had a portable apps version of Thunderbird (windows) that runs off a thumb drive and wanted to take the settings and transfer them to my Thunderbird that's on my Linux computer.
This is what I did:
First, I installed thunderbird on my Ubuntu 10.04 Linux box and opened it, and closed it (so that it would create the /home/<username>/.thunderbird folder in the user account).
Then, I renamed the linux /home/<username>/.thunderbird folder to .thunderbird_ORIGINAL
Then, I created a new /home/<username>/.thunderbird folder
Then, I took the windows e:ThunderbirdPortableDataprofile folder and copied it to the /home/<username>/.thunderbird folder.
Then, I looked into the /home/<username>/.thunderbird_ORIGINAL folder and wrote down the name of the folder with the ".default" extension.
Then, I renamed the profile folder (that came from the windows e:ThunderbirdPortableData folder) "<name-I-wrote-down>.default".
And then, I copied the profiles.ini folder from /home/<username>/.thunderbird_ORIGINAL to the /home/<username>/.thunderbird folder.
I opened up Thunderbird in Linux and everything seems fine! (I'll definitely be keeping a backup just in case)
My question is: is this fine and dandy, or a recipe for disaster?

At work, we run Windows... Windows domain, windows workstations, etc. Today my boss asked me my thoughts on running an Ubuntu lab within the mixture of our existing Windows setup.
Well, that brought several questions to mind. So I understand you can bind an Ubuntu computer to a Windows domain, seems easy enough, whether you do it through Samba or the other guide I read that I kind of forget at the moment, but anyway...
I was just curious how Ubuntu interacts with domain users when on the windows domain. For example, if we have an Ubuntu machine on the Windows domain with a local user "administrator" and that's it, would any domain users be able to log into the Ubuntu work station, similar to how it is on Windows?
