I've been getting annoyed with the way that Firefox opens files for me. I used to have it so that they would come up with a window that asked whether I wished to save files onto the hard drive or simply open them. When choosing to Save, they would go to my Desktop. Because I mainly save files from my Uni website, they are generally .pdf files. N for some reason, they open in the Firefox window, so then I have to go to File, Save, then choose where I want to save it. It would be more efficient if it worked the way it did originally. How can I get the settings back to the way they were? I am running Ubuntu 9.04 and Firefox 3.0.19. Because I use a shared computer, I'm not sure whether the version of Firefox has been changed.

I use firefox3.6.x, and i play online video (sockwave flash) often, but while opening the page (often has swf), the whole X restart, and back to login window of gdm. The problem not accured everytime i open the page, but very often. I met this problem both in ubuntu 9.10 and 10.04, and also lubuntu 10.04. So, i fall back to use firefox 3.5.9, and evrything seems fine.

One of the first issues I struggled with after installing CentOS 5 was that my screen would not come back to me after closing my laptop lid. Note that this is in a command line interface (not GNOME). After unsuccessful searching on the web I stumbled upon this configuration file (/etc/acpi/events/video.conf):
# Configuration to turn on DPMS again on video activity, needed for some
# laptops. Disabled by default, uncomment if your laptop display stays blank
# after you close and open the lid.

First thing I will say is I am new this site and computers in general. I have pc and am running back track 4. Today the computer shut off, maybe an over heat. I restarted it and it turned off again even before the reboot finished. I put an additional cooling fan in front of the air intake and the computer is staying on but now will not open the emails in the my hot mail account. It seems to open the account, I can see what is in my in box just can not open them. Moving the curser over the unopened email usually made what is in task bar at the bottom of the page change. As of now it continues to say "Done" in stead of showing a task. Moving the curser over other things on the same page will make the task bar say "javascript" only.

I have a Sony laptop CPU 2.80GHz HDD 60Gb and 512Mb RAM. I have defragmented.I downloaded Ubuntu 9 and burned to CD and all begins well as follows:
1 booting logo
2 Opening dialog screen
3 screen full of text(lasts about 5 seconds)
4 a screen full of mosaic patterns appears
5 a mauve screen flashes (with small rectangular patterns on it
6 that's it - I have to switch off after 10 minutes or more!
Sent for the CD from Canonical - same happens as above. A friendly suggestion offered was to try the alternate iso. I downloaded this and unzipped the files. These are scattered around the desktop in folders and files. How do I burn these to a disk?(get them together or just start with the"install" folder?)I'd like to persevere.Hello! I'm running Vim 7.0 on Debian Etch. The system is between 2-3 years old. Over the past week or so, when I open vim, the document opens very slowly -- on the order of 6-7 seconds... I ran 'time vim', then exited the document as quickly as I could (I figure it probably took less than a second to type ':x<enter>')How do I figure out what changed to cause this problem? It's not outside the realm of possibility that I installed something on the system that caused this, although I never noticed a correspondence between installation and the slowdown in vim. I'm not even exactly sure what I've installed over the last week.

Files work fine if i copy them to the desktop and open them from there but not over the LAN. I have looked on the web with no luck.

I am trying to use Firefox to open a *.csv file from a download button on a Web page. The download button would open a dialog that offers me to choose to either open the file with Open Office Calc or save the file. I would like to open it on the fly. But an error comes up that reads:
Code:
/tmp/HIST1031-4.csv could not be opened, because the associated helper application does not exist. Change the association in your preferences.
The helper application in Firefox's Edit > Preferences is Open Office Calc. I checked in /usr/lib/openoffice.org3/program/, and found the script for scalc.

I can no longer open TweetDeck either from the desktop shortcut or menu.I tried reinstalling it to see if that would fix it & after install the program ran fine but after shutting it down & trying to restart it from the shortcut icon/menu it says starting but does not complete & would not restart again. The only change to my computer was earlier I had installed Samba to access Vista network shares. Would this be causing a problem opening TweetDeck?Anyone any idea how I might get TweetDeck to work properly?I will keep trying to fix this (tricky when I do not know what the cause is!-I have googled but no reference found yet) but I am most grateful for help(meantime I am using Gwibber to tweet- but I much prefer TweetDeck & would really like it working properly in my dualboot Fedora14).

The other day Home folder on desktop didn't work, I clicked on it and mouse icon would just load and load, but it didn't open it, i had to go to Menu -> Places -> Home to open it. I created my own shortcut to Home and didn't pay too much attention to it. But today I connected my phone via USB and folders mounted on desktop and I got the same behavior, when I click on it, the whole desktop icons disappear and reload but folder doesn't open. And when I go to network, the same thing happens. I recently reinstalled my openSuse, could it be that it took the settings or something from the old installation?
