View 9 Replies View RelatedI was trying to download MOPSLinux from their Russian FTP server, using Firefox-->FlashGot-->KDE-Kget and it kept sitting there for about a minute, then popping up a dialog box asking for a Username & Password to access the FTP site.
I tried the usual anonymous type of login information combinations, to no avail; the box kept reappearing.
Finally for the heck of it, I tried Firefox-->FlashGot-->Wget and presto! It began downloading right away, no questions asked.
This is on Slack64 with the stock KDE installation + the KDE3 compat libs.
Here's the transfer currently going on the Wget window:
Code:
Kernel 2.6.21.5, GNU/Linux (Slackware 12.0)
xfce 4.4
Qt 3.3.8
KDE 3.5.7
KGet v. 0.8.5
I've just installed all of the packages in disks 1 and 2 of the slack 12.0 distro so, among them, I have the slack series kde/ installed. I run xfce as the desktop environment, which is able to run KDE apps. In main menu>Network there is kget, a download manager and also supposedly a p2p client. I ran it and it said "It is the 1st time you run kget. Do you want to make the default download manager?". I replied "No". As nothing happened I restarted X (the startx command ends up running xfce), ran kget again, and it made the same question, which this time I answered in the affirmative.
Again nothing happened. So I tried to download some file from the web, in the hope that a kget window would open. But no window opened nor anything else happened! In the console, I did 'ps -e' and there it was, however. So I began the search for documentation. First I ran khelpcenter, and was presented with the kget help. It was all about menus. However, typing kget --help-all in a console, gives almost two screens of information. And I tried several commands, from the GUI, following the syntax displayed by this command, but it was no use. So, I finally had to fall back on LQ, like so many times.
I am trying to compile VLC code base on my Fedora5 system. I am getting the error when i am trying to run ./configure command.DBUS >=1.0.0. installed libdubs-dev is not installedwhat should I do. I have already installed DBUS (1.4.1).

I am running Ubuntu 10.10 alongside windows xp pro. When I turn my pc on I have the option to boot to ubuntu or xp and at the top of the window it says that the version of grub running is "GNU GRUB Version 1.98+20100804-5Ubuntu-3" how I shold go about installing GRUB 2 or just leave it as is.
I just want a simple email notifier. I have started to use Ubuntu 10.10 and seem to have downloaded Gmailwatcher - it shows in Applications/Internet/Gmailwatcher. But it doesn't show as installed software in the Installed Software Centre. So, I cant uninstall it. I can't configure it? If I try to open Gmailwatcher I receive a popup asking me to open it from an icon above - but there's no icon there, I just want a simple email notifier - preferably one which I can add an audio alert.
View 1 Replies View RelatedSo installing a programm is a problem. I like to install Aqualung. "/.configure" works. But "make" seems to be not installed. "checkinstall" seems to be not installed "sudo apt-get make" does not work. I have no internet connection with linux, because I have no idea how I install the network card. I guess this sudo command use internet? Is there another way to compile that program? (And just by the way, why must this be so difficult?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI finally got the ubuntu-9.10-desktop-i386.iso file burned onto a CD, but I can't get it to install on my powerbook G4/1GHz (it has a full GB of memory). If this is the wrong iso file what do I need to do to get the correct one. Just want to make clear this has only one OS on at the moment (ubuntu 6.0.6) and I cannot connect it to the internet! I don't have an ISP that accepts linux computers.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI just downloaded this since it says it works for my graphics card (ATI Radeon x1200 series) and I need this since my laptop is laggy playing flash games, ....., compiz fusion. So I want to know how to install this? I tried:
Right click> Properties> Permissions tab> Check marked "allow executing file as program" I then double clicked the .run file and ran it in terminal, It did some things and I swore it installed! but I don't see or feel a difference, so how do I install this and how do I tell if its installed?
SO I installed Ubuntu 9.10 nad then windows XP. Now I can only get into windows. I tried to re-install Grub on the linux partition but I get an error: Cannot Read `/grub/core.img`correctly
I followed the tutorial on this forum. I booted to my Ubunut CD, ran termainal, sudo fdisk -l, mounted my Linux partition and ran sudo grub-install --root-directory=/media/sda1 /dev/sda1. Which gave the error above.
How else can I fix this. Bearing in mind I cannot log into my Ubuntu system.
I am running the xfce desktop on a new ubuntu 9.10 installation.I used the Synaptics Package Manager to install several applications, including R, the statistics programming language. After the installation, it took me quite a while to find where the package manager put the executable, but I found it.The problem is, I can't figure out how to get it to execute. I tried double clicking on it and I tried right clicking on it and selecting "Execute" from the menu that pops up.
How do I get an executable to execute? Also, is there an easy way to track down where the executables get put after I use the Synaptics Package Manager? It would be handy if I could put links to them in some central location.
Will you post your themes here and where and how you installed them?
View 1 Replies View Relatedlong time reader, first time poster i appear to have both grubs installed under /boot/grub i have both a menu.lst and a grub.cfg im booting fine, can update-grub fine, my only issue is that i can't remove old kernels and update the correct grub my menu.lst doesn't show the old kernel so i can only assume im booting with grub2 but can only update-grub for grub(1)
it's a minor issue now but i'm worried it will have wider consequences in time

View 9 Replies View RelatedI've just been playing with the whereis command. For a program installed with synaptic package manager or comes preinstalled, whereis finds the path to the program. These programs in applications menu or startup applications don't need directory information, somehow linux must have them in some kind of a directory or something. For a program extracted from a .bz file, linux has no idea where the program is and I must give directory information. So how does linux find programs that are installed normally? It can't just search through files, that would seem to be slow. Is there a table or directory where program location is stored?
