I have gone through the steps in the installation for the latest Ubuntu Desktop and once I get to the final screen (entering name and password etc) I can't go any further. The "forward" button is hidden and down the bottom it states "ready when you are" and that leads to script.
View 9 RepliesI've just installed 10.10 and the screen is shifted down (meaning, there is a black bar at the top of the Acer AL1916W monitor and the bottom menu bar is hidden - the accessible). The Acer controls seem to have no effect on this.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm attempting to install lFedora 10 from a live cd. I already finished the installation process. But when I reboot to finish the post installation information I can't click the forward button to continue because the screen resolution is to low on my LCD. I can't see the forward button to click in the lower right hand corner. I found out if I just hit the enter button I got through the "Welcome" and "License Information" part but when I get to the "Create User" part after I Confirm my password the pressing the enter button doesn't work. And of course I can't see the "Forward" button to click. Is there some way to go in text mode?

EDIT: It was because my username had a capital letter in it.
I am new to Ubuntu and am attempting to do a clean install on my second pc. I'm semi computer illiterate, and I am stuck on the Who are you? page. It appears that I have all the fields filled in correctly, with checks next to them all and "Fair password" displayed. I have Log in automatically checked, and I have require my password to log in as well as encrypt my home folder unchecked. I was wondering if there had been problems with this or is there something that I am doing wrong with my installation? The forward button is not clickable for some reason

View 4 Replies View RelatedI can't install Ubuntu 10.10 (64-bits) because the Forward button is grayed out in the "Who are you?" box.
I tried installing with various options (with and w/o additional software and with and w/o online updating, manual and automatic partitioning, going back and forth, trying different ways to fill out the fields in the stuck "Who are you?" page etc.)
The most cynical is that at the bottom it says: "Ready when you are..." - which obviously isn't true - it should say: "I am utterly stuck...".
Machine is a dual 275 Opteron with 16 GB registered RAM on an Iwill DK88 mobo. 3 SATA disks and 2 IDE disks. Latest BIOS.
why these buttons would not work in opera but work in nautilus and firefox? I've tried to change the mouse settings in opera and nothing works. thoughts?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI've upgraded from Karmic 64-bit kubuntu to the RC build for Lucid. I have two pcs connected to two monitors via an Aten dual head KVM switch. With the new release I only get a background slideshow on one monitor. I can get an image on the first monitor by right clicking and choosing Next Wallpaper image, but it never changes. When I select Desktop Activity Settings both monitors go entirely blank, except for the mouse cursor. The Display Multiple Monitors screen has ticks in all the multiple monitor checkboxes and Identify All Displays correctly identifies both monitors.
View 1 Replies View RelatedHere's the situation: I have the newest release of Ubuntu running in dual mode with a constantly failing Windows XP. I installed with GRUB and had no issues, but wanted to have access to the Windows files from Ubuntu (it did a logical partition and I couldn't locate any of the Windows files), allocate more space to Ubuntu and make the dual mode more efficient. Last night, I read up on how to do these things, went to GParted to briefly look at how the partitioning process would work. I believed that I took no action, shut down, and now the computer won't boot. It brings up the HP load screen with the Boot Device Menu and ROM Based Setup but immediately goes to a black screen with a flashing white bar. I tried restoring my defaults in the BIOS and I tested the RAM and HDD, each failing to resolve my issue. I'm assuming that whatever I've done is keeping the computer from knowing where to boot from.

Kernel panic - not syncing : VFS : Unable to mount root fs on unknown - block (8,17)
does this have something to do with the OS looking at the wrong hd?
theres no command prompt to actually do anything and i tried booting in safe mode and had the same problem. Let me know what i can do!
Excited at seeing the new features in 10.04, I clicked the Upgrade button tonight. I am now really regretting it! Problems:
1. My screen resolution should be 1280x1024 but the System>Preferences>Monitors control panel only shows 1024x768.
I think I have onboard Realtek graphics. Do I need to install proprietary drivers? Everything worked fine out of the box with 9.10!
2. The sound isn't working. Again I think I have onboard Realtek sound, and again it used to work fine without any intervention from me...
3. Although on first startup wireless networking was working fine, I restarted to see if that would solve the display issue, and wireless networking stopped working too!
I have an RaLink wireless card.
When I used Grub to choose 2.6.31.20, I got some error messages at startup (e.g. mount couldn't mount /dev), but then it did eventually start up and the sound and wireless networking are working again. But the resolution is still not fixed. It is now offering 1152x864, which it didn't previously, but no 1280x1024 (my screen's native resolution).
just a general weirdness, but some folders that are in my /home folder don't show up. if i check "show hidden folders", they still don't show up. for all terms and purposes, they are simply not there. however, if i search for them through the search tool, or beagle, they show up as being in my /home folder. so, anyone have any idea how this happened, or how i can remedy this?
View 9 Replies View RelatedSo about an hour ago I put my computer on standby. For whatever reason I couldn't bring it back so I restarted it. It works fine except now Ubuntu has pushed my display down. This means that the bottom of my tool-bar on the bottom of the screen is cut off, and there's a black bar on the top. I'm using a T.V. screen so there is no way I can manually adjust it. I also plugged my desktop back into an old monitor and it was off-center downward too.

I thought I was in the clear after downloading and booting, but then I get stuck at the 'Ready When You Are' screen. This is Ubuntu 10.10I have seen previous such issues caused by caps in the username, but I've not been prompted to even enter a username yet so I really don't know what could be causing this, and I don't know where to begin searching.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI took out this 120gb HD from an old computer which I recycled. I took out the SATA cable and an IDE cable just in case I would need them for the installation. This would work great as a backup HD for my current 320gb HD. I have never had a backup HD, so I don't know how it works. I have numbered my concerns to make for easy reference.
1. First, however, is one concern I forgot to address. When I looked up the documentation for my computer (Inspirion 530), it mentions that "NOTE: For additional drives, extra screws are not shipped during initial purchase of the computer, but are shipped with the additional drives." This is terrible! Had I known, I would have taken out some screws from the old computer, but now it is gone, and I don't know what kind of screws I need. I don't even know where to buy them.
2. In terms of installing the new HD, I read that all I need to do is connect the SATA cable and the power, and then boot up to BIOS, where I would "activate" my drive. Then, Ubuntu should be able to identify it immediately. Since I am thinking about doing a fresh install to 10.04, I am thinking about formatting this new drive to ext4, and then backing up my important documents/pictures/music onto this second drive.
Finally, I would boot up to the 10.04 live disc, and simply do a fresh install onto the 320gb HD, knowing that my files are backed up on the 120gb one. Would this procedure work fine, or would Ubuntu have trouble identifying the HD?
3. My final concern is regarding automatic backups. Assuming that I am able to install the HD perfectly, and get a fresh install of 10.04, I want a program or mechanism to help me backup on a regular basis. I know that Mac users have a convenient program called "Time Machine" but there is no such counterpart for Linux. I also know that there are some command-line utilities that I can use, but I would like to stick with a GUI.
I've generated a preseed for my Ubuntu Lucid installation, its loading ubiquity automatically (from kernel parm automatic-ubiquity) and it fills in all the values from the preseed file its given. However it displays the Ubiquity page "Ready to Install" (I am using the kubuntu ubiquity package) and I have to click the button install for it to start. How can I get it to skip this and just start installing?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am trying to install 10.10 from a Live CD over my 9.04 (it would not do the upgrade automatically due to apparently lack of disk space.) at the end of the my best guess at the process (alas, Linux is pretty much a plug and pray operation for me.), on rebooting, I get the message: "the disk drive for / is not ready yet or not yet present" I must have messed up at the Allocate Drive SPace / Edit Partition step. I have three existing partitions:
7Gb for OS previously 9.04
35GB for data (which I clearly don't want to mess with)
a a bit for Swap.
So, I have clicked on the 7GB partition /dev/sda1 and have another window, Edit Partition, which is asking me: New partition size (I would just leave it at 7007) Use As (I presume I can leave it as EXT4?) Format the Partition (NO unchecked?)and Mount Point? Now here is where I don't have a clue. The pull down options are:
/, /home, /boot, /tmp, /usr, /var, etc.

Use a non-graphical editor, like emacs or vi. Try Ctl+Alt+F3 -- you should get a login prompt. Login to an account with admin privileges (like, the first account you created, for example), and then type 'sudo vi /etc/fstab'; that will open /etc/fstab in the vi editor. Make your changes, save them, exit the editor, reboot... but if you're not used to working with a non-graphics-based editor, you'll have a bit of research to do. It's not hard, though, just tedious.however i have not managed to make it work.

I have recently got the Linux bible 2010 and it came with a cd and dvd containing multiple distro's of linux. I have tried them all with the same problem. Everything until the actual GUI desktop shows up from the live disks as well as an actual debian install, when I get to the desktop however out of range shows up. I have a video card hooked up, figured that might be the problem, it was not. I tried the on-board video and it also did the same thing. I also tried a different monitor, which did not work.
