Ubuntu Installation :: Desktop Activity Settings Leads To Blank Screen

Apr 27, 2010

I've upgraded from Karmic 64-bit kubuntu to the RC build for Lucid. I have two pcs connected to two monitors via an Aten dual head KVM switch. With the new release I only get a background slideshow on one monitor. I can get an image on the first monitor by right clicking and choosing Next Wallpaper image, but it never changes. When I select Desktop Activity Settings both monitors go entirely blank, except for the mouse cursor. The Display Multiple Monitors screen has ticks in all the multiple monitor checkboxes and Identify All Displays correctly identifies both monitors.

Fedora Installation :: Upgrade To 12 From 11 - Screen Goes Blank With Alot Of Disk Activity

Dec 15, 2009

I attempted to do the upgrade from 11 to 12 with the Preupgrade Assistant. Unfortunatly something went terribly wrong. Everything went well, excluding the size of partition error, untill the reboot. I did have to remove two previous installs. Now grub gives me an option to upgrade to Fedora 12. When I select this the screen runs code quickly and the screen goes blank with alot of disk activity. Then nothing. Is there a method of recovering this install? I am fairly new to Linux Administration and I am just knowledgable enough to mess things up.

Ubuntu :: "install" Or "try Without Install" Leads To Ubuntu Logo Screen With Dots Flashing Under - Blank Screen

Aug 10, 2011

1. Installed Ubuntu 11.04 32 bit for my 64 bit laptop to run alongside windows 7.

2. Installation worked, but had problems booting - it booted sometimes from the grub menu other times didn't

3. Found no solutions for problem so deleted grub and removed the ubuntu OS from disk management.

Since that time I've been attempting to install the long term support (version 10.04) for a while and nothing's happening. The button to "install" or "try without install" leads me to the ubuntu logo screen with the dots flashing under then a blank screen. The memory stick's light doesn't flash either hence it's not working. I've tried the 32 bit and 64 bit version, downloaded from multiple sources and converted the iso using multiple programs.

I then tried the 11.04 version again in 64 bit but that didn't work so I tried what I did in the beginning, the 32 bit version and it works. It feels a bit like after the first install my laptop only wants to install the 32bit 11.04 version and is a bit racist (can i say that?) to the other versions so completely rejects them. Why?

Is there any chance if I try to use a cd to boot that version and it may work from there?

And if I can't run 10.04 for some weird reason technical or w.e, can someone reccommend me another REALLY good version for a beginner which is easy to install and doesn't have too many problems.

Ubuntu Installation :: Blank Screen: 10.04, ATI Radeon 9550 / X Tries To Load Screen Just Goes Blank?

May 9, 2010

I am having the same problem, as soon as X tries to load my screen just goes blank. I have an ATI Radeon 9550. At first I tried switching between VGA and DVI as well but upon ruling that out, I switch to my on-board video card and that is working thus far, but I'm trying very hard to figure out a way to be able to switch back. Anyways I'll check back in later on if I have any new information I will post.

Ubuntu :: Grub2 Manual Section Leads To Blank Display

Apr 3, 2010

Today, just hurry the boot process up a few seconds, I manually selected the kernel to boot to. Everything went well and got to the point where I heard the bootup sound and then the screen went blank and my monitor on-switch went orange - indicating nothing to display.

If I pressed the delete key I could hear the sound made when there's nothing more to delete. I switched to one of the virtual terminals and the monitor switch went green but no display.

I rebooted and let the bootup process as normal and everything was OK. I repeated the initial bootup process, with the manual selection, and it went blank again. The odd thing is, I'm sure I've recently done this before and all was fine.

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrade To 10.04 Leads To Loss Of Correct Screen Resolution / Wireless Networking / Sound

May 4, 2010

Excited at seeing the new features in 10.04, I clicked the Upgrade button tonight. I am now really regretting it! Problems:

1. My screen resolution should be 1280x1024 but the System>Preferences>Monitors control panel only shows 1024x768.

I think I have onboard Realtek graphics. Do I need to install proprietary drivers? Everything worked fine out of the box with 9.10!

2. The sound isn't working. Again I think I have onboard Realtek sound, and again it used to work fine without any intervention from me...

3. Although on first startup wireless networking was working fine, I restarted to see if that would solve the display issue, and wireless networking stopped working too!

I have an RaLink wireless card.

When I used Grub to choose 2.6.31.20, I got some error messages at startup (e.g. mount couldn't mount /dev), but then it did eventually start up and the sound and wireless networking are working again. But the resolution is still not fixed. It is now offering 1152x864, which it didn't previously, but no 1280x1024 (my screen's native resolution).

Ubuntu :: Moving Mouse During Blank Screen Does Not Return To Gnome Desktop

May 21, 2011

An ubuntu-11.04 laptop is set to turn on the screensaver after 5 minutes of inactivity, and power management is set to blank the display after 15 minutes of inactivity. When the screen goes blank, you're supposed to be able to move the mouse to return to your Gnome desktop. This works sometimes, sometimes not. When it doesn't, moving the mouse doesn't eliminate the black screen, although I can see the mouse cursor. ctrl+alt+del does nothing, neither do alt+tab, alt+esc or ctrl+alt+esc. ctrl+alt+f1-12 work as they usually do, so I can "sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart" from one of the TTYs, or via ssh.

I tested just now with setting the screensaver and power management display blanking to 1 minutes. After a minute the screen went blank (backlight on), and then after a second or two black (backlight off), and moving the mouse returned to Gnome as it should. So I don't know why sometimes it doesn't. Two questions:

1- Which program can I run, or which service can I restart, to return to Gnome without having to kill gdm and lose all open windows?

2- What's causing this?

General :: After Booting Logging Into The User A/c - Gives A Blank Screen With The Desktop Wallpaper

Jan 8, 2011

I just put on my Linux PC now and after booting logging into the user a/c, it just gives a blank screen with the desktop wallpaper - no menu's or anything, so there's pretty much nothing I can do. I know I had removed the menu and replaced it with the dock (awn dock or something).

However, I can log in as root and root works fine (so I'm doing the update at the moment).

Coming back to my question, I used to know an Ubuntu command which I put in as sudo (terminal)and it used to work like a magic command which would literally restore and repair my linux installation - I even used it when I bought a new system and transferred my linux hard drive from my previous machine to the new one and this one command actually setup and prepared my linux installation to work smoothly in my new PC - just one command after connecting my h/drive in the new PC.

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.10 Image Not Loading - Flash Screen On Blank Screen

Dec 26, 2010

Is there a known problem with the Lubuntu 10.10 image here? I have downloaded it to two different computers, then burned the images to two different blank CD's (different brands) and neither loads. Both only get as far as the Lubuntu menu, once ENTER is pressed at that point to load the LiveCD, a blank screen eventually appears with a flashing cursor at the upper left of the screen, that's it. They were both burned using the slowest burn speeds available.

Ubuntu Installation :: Freeze/Blank Screen After Screen Off 11.04?

May 4, 2011

I've been running Ubuntu 10.10 very smoothly for a while now. Decided to upgrade to 11.04 - managed to corrupt the hard disk the first time by letting the laptop hibernate part of the way through but reinstalled from a live CD of 11.04 and it's now working except for this issue.

If I shut the screen on my laptop (or press the screen off button) either the screen won't come back on or it will but frozen (I can move the mouse but not click on anything etc.) In this state music continues to play (from spotify under wine) and if I press my hibernate shortcut (power button) the computer hibernates, only to wake into the same situation. I've got a Dell Latitude D520, upgraded to a bigger hard disk and more ram - the ubuntu partition has 50gb. Windows is working fine.

Edit: I noticed a sticky thread which includes something about a blank screen but I think this is a different issue?

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.04 64-bit Blank Screen - ATI GPU?

Jul 19, 2010

So finally decided to upgrade the desktop (dual-booting with Windows 7 for games) from 9.10 (fresh install awhile ago, never did anything with it) to 10.04 - upgrade went fine, reboot, watch grub go by, and voila. Blank screen.

Things I tried in grub:

add 'xforcevesa'
add 'xforcevesa' & remove 'quiet splash'
add 'nomodeset' & remove 'quiet splash'
add 'nomodeset xforcevesa' & remove 'quiet splash'

[Code]...

I was hoping to test out Windows 7 in a VM, see how far I could get for GPU acceleration there - I'd much rather not run Windows on the bare iron for that machine, but if I can't get this fixed I have no option :-/

Ubuntu Installation :: Blank Partition Screen

I'm installing Koala here on a 250gb Sata drive. I am looking to dual boot with Win7. I've got a 80gb Win7 partition and the rest is unallocated so I can install Ubuntu on to it. If I try to install, I get to the manual partition screen and it's blank. From what I can tell, Ubuntu isn't recognizing my hard drive at all. When I boot into the liveCD and run gparted, it says no devices found. Also when I boot gparted from a cd I get the same thing. BIOS sees the drive fine and the drive boots into Windows fine.

When I run "sudo fdisk -l" I get nothing. I've tried several of the flags including all-generic-ide. Also tried removing dmraid.

Ubuntu Installation :: 9.10 Live CD Blank Screen

Feb 27, 2010

I recently got a new laptop and am trying to install Ubuntu 9.10 on it. I have installed it on my two other computers without any problems, but there seems to be a hitch with my new one. So I boot up using the live CD and then am presented with the option to test Ubuntu or install it. If I choose either of these the screen just goes blank. If I go with the first option of testing Ubuntu before installing, I can hear the intro drumbeats but the screen is still blank.

I have searched in some forums and tried some people's advice, like pressing Ctrl+Alt+- or trl+Alt+Backspace to change the resolution and restart X windows, respectivley. But it doesn't seem to work.
I'll list my laptops specs just in case my problem has anything to do with them:

MSi
Windows 7 Home Premium 32 bit
Intel Core i3 M 330 2.13GHz
4GB DDR3 RAM
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator HD
