Ubuntu Installation :: Partitioning (User) Error Leads To Failed Boot?

Here's the situation: I have the newest release of Ubuntu running in dual mode with a constantly failing Windows XP. I installed with GRUB and had no issues, but wanted to have access to the Windows files from Ubuntu (it did a logical partition and I couldn't locate any of the Windows files), allocate more space to Ubuntu and make the dual mode more efficient. Last night, I read up on how to do these things, went to GParted to briefly look at how the partitioning process would work. I believed that I took no action, shut down, and now the computer won't boot. It brings up the HP load screen with the Boot Device Menu and ROM Based Setup but immediately goes to a black screen with a flashing white bar. I tried restoring my defaults in the BIOS and I tested the RAM and HDD, each failing to resolve my issue. I'm assuming that whatever I've done is keeping the computer from knowing where to boot from.
I got a notification that there was an upgrade available today in ubuntu 9.10 64, after the update i restarted my system and while booting i encountered this error message:
Kernel panic - not syncing : VFS : Unable to mount root fs on unknown - block (8,17)
does this have something to do with the OS looking at the wrong hd? theres no command prompt to actually do anything and i tried booting in safe mode and had the same problem. Let me know what i can do!
I downloaded the Fedora live dvd iso file, burned it to a dvd. I was wondering if I forgot to do something or did I do something wrong. When I try to install from the dvd I get this error message, isoLinux: Disk error 80 , AX = 42A7 , drive 9F Boot Failed: press key to retry When I press a key to retry I get the same error. I also tried to install virtual pc and get not boot disk found.
I have a netbook running Windows XP as standard. There is also a recovery partition which came from the factory.
In the past I installed Ubuntu (I think 9.something) from USB key and all worked fine. However my XP became corrupted and I needed to do a repair on it. After this, Ubuntu became removed from the boot select menu.
Since then, Ubuntu has become updated to 10.04, which I now cannot install.
The Live CD tells me there is a "file IO error" and simply stops installation at around 70%.
I did manage to get into Ubuntu from a Live USB using Wubi. However when I chose to install Ubuntu to a Harddrive, the option to "install side by side" was missing.
After reading on the forums, I did a chkdsk /f on Windows and tried again. Now my liveUSB does not show a boot menu!
When I select to boot from USB stick, the screen goes blank with a flashing cursor. Ctrl+alt+dlt reboots.
I'm really lost here! It seems when I fix one problem, another problem arises!
Also when trying to instal Ubuntu within Windows, the process goes through to 100% and asks me to reboot. When I do so, the option for Ubuntu does show in the boot menu. However when I select it, I get an error "Windows boot failed: file wubildr.mbr and status: 0xc00000f - something is corrupt".
I had a a problem booting last night when my laptop battery came loose and caused a crash during boot.It ceased loading a daemon and I turned it off with the power switch, then I received the boot error,then i checked the linuxdrives directory and it was corrupt,I then, out of ignorance, ran wubi from within windows XP and said unistall believing that it would reinstall and fix itself.Thus you can see my green behaviour.I have been searching the threads and have tried many things but have had no success, I will suffer a great loss if I lose that load of Ubuntu as I have allot of work stored there, and in my Thunderbird accounts.

It comes after choosing language, when the Ubuntu start-up logo shows with the 5 dut under it. I am trying to install Ubuntu Netbook on a little Compaq Mini.
I have a problem trying to install CentOS 5 as a dual-boot with my Windows 7. Using Windows tools, I shrunk my main partition and created about a 100GB of unallocated free space. Then, I restarted my computer, booting from the CentOS dvd, but when choosing "Use free space on selected drives and create default layout" option during installation, I get an error saying that partitions couldn't be allocated as primary partitions and that there is not enough space left to create partition for /boot.
I just tried to install Ubuntu 10.04 on my windows machine. Unfortunately there was an installation error and now the computer will not boot up in windows anymore (I get grub error 17). I had Ubuntu 7.04 before, but when installing 10.04, I deleted the 7.04 partitions. Is there a way to recover the ability to boot into windows?
At the end of this week I'm going to get a new PC. It will have a 80GB SSD ( 2.5" SSD INTEL X25-M 80GB) and a 1TB HD. I want to dual boot Windows 7 and Ubuntu on it.The SSD will be for fast bootup and should also contain the core OS stuff. I will partition it for both Windows 7 and Linux but I'm not certain how big I should make both partitions. I was considering going with 60GB for Windows and 20GB for Linux but is that big enough for keeping the core Ubuntu on?
1. I have windows xp on my notebook compaq presario v2000. 2. Wanted to load linux as dual boot. 3. Tried with Suse linux, but there was some blank or black screen problem after installation. 4. Someone suggested Ubuntu linux. 5. Downloaded and burned ubuntu on a cd. 6. But this time during installation during partitioning there was a serious problem. 7. On ubuntu webpage they say for partiioning i will get 4 option, but i got only three options in my cd. 8. The missing option was the most important , which was required for dual boot. " Guided resize and use free space". 9. So i had to abort my Ubuntu installation as using any other option could have effected my current xp installation or might have formated my whole notebook. 10. So any comment why the dual boot partitioning option was absent in my ubuntu cd. 11. Or there is some thing to be activated in my notebook setting to enable dual boot.
I am trying to install a box here where my /storage partition is about 2.5T.I had setup the partitioning with suse, while testing, and all worked well.Now when trying to install CentOs 5.5 it gives me an error, that my boot partition is on a gpt partition and this machine cannot boot that.Also I don't see the option to create XFS partitions from the installer.Can 5.5 support GPT @ install time?

I am attempting to install the 64-bit version of Ubuntu 10.10 on my computer.I'm intending to dual boot Win7 and Ubuntu with one hard drive that came factory partitioned into two drives. Win7 was installed first.Ok, onto the issue. The Install is going well until I get to the Allocate Drive Space form (so almost right off the bat). I first created a swap partition within my "second drive" (really just a partition of the larger drive). This stalled out and I had to exit setup and restart the computer. Booted into Win7 to be safe and Win only recognizes the First Drive and no longer the second drive. So, I boot up the Ubuntu Install CD and get back to the allocate drive space form I see I have a (linux-swap) drive with the same gb space as before.
So, from here I create a partition within the "second drive" 20gb of ext4 type space. This does not stall out and creates a partition of 20 gb. But, now it says I have 175 gb of "Unusable" space. This is very unsettling and using the "revert" button does nothing.How do I fix this space so I can finish the install?[URL]
I'm running an up-to-date Lucid Lynx, full encryption with LUKS on my Eee 1005HA. Since yesterday, after booting, the only "X" is can see is the mouse cursor above a console-like text, saying:

So, I googled for the getpwuid_r thing. I found a blog saying to install nscd (did so) and run it. But: To my inconvenience, after every booting, I have to switch to console 1, log in, run "sudo /etc/init.d/nscd restart" and then "sudo restart gdm".
I recently installed Kubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx Desktop 64-bit edition. The install worked and I was able to restart the machine no problems. Last week (5/27/10) I shut down my machine and since then I cannot boot. I assume it's because of new software maybe a new kernel; I did an "apt-get update; apt-get upgrade" on May 28th or 27th. Upon booting if I hit Esc right away I see:

To structure the layout of my partitions. I'm installing Windows 7, Backtrack 4 R2 and Ubuntu 10.10 Desktop on my laptop. I've got a 500 GB HDD named sda.
I've already installed Windows 7. It's my opinion that it's easiest to begin with Windows.
The partitions look like this right now:
The Windows installation is unencrypted and I want it to stay that way. It's only there in case my laptop gets stolen, I've installed various nasty things there.
The Backtrack 4 installation will also be given 100 GB space, I want it to be encrypted. The Ubuntu installation should get the rest of all the remaining space and preferably be encrypted but it's not 100% necessary.
How I should partition this? There's a limit on 4 primary partitions? How do I circumvent this? There should be one dedicated GRUB partition which will point to each of the installations own boot loaders?
I have Fedora 6 & 10.3. Both DVD's will install the default partitioning (LVM) with either the normal programs or the custom selection. I wish to custom create my own partitions (about6 or7) with EXT3 format. The drive is112Gb. and I am only using about 30Gb. in total, giving approx. 80 Gb free. However after checking for dependencies the error message comes back 'Insuffient free space' every time. This happens on another M/board and/or Drive combination.
I successfully partitioned my desktop with Gparted and made it into an XP/Ubuntu dual boot.
Now i'm trying to do the same with my netbook (eee pc 1000he), and the existing partitions look funny:
How should I change this to prepare for installing Ubuntu? Can I just install to the unallocated space on the extended partition? I don't need optimal efficiency here, I just need to know where to install Ubuntu for a workable dual boot.
It's confusing to me that Windows is on an extended partition, and also that /dev/sda2 has the boot flag (this drive contains nothing but two undeletable folders titled "amd 64" and "i386"). This set-up is the result of a Windows re-install at a sketchy computer shop.
I am trying to set up my Ubuntu 10.04 netbook to see my WinXP desktop's files and vice a versa. I followed the steps in this tutorial thread: HOWTO: Setup Samba peer-to-peer with Windows. I got as far as "Time to add yourself as an samba user." at this point I keep getting the following error:

I am about to get a new laptop here soon and I was planning a dual boot like I have on my current laptop (Win7 and Ubuntu), but I have something special in mind. I looked around the forum to see if there was anything like what I had or if it was even possible but I didn't see anything quite like this.I was wondering if this was even possible, and if so, would anyone be able to tell me what filesystem I should use for my windows swap partition?
I made a system in CentOS5.5. I used Tomcat6 and PostgreSQL. But I couldn't enter my system. There are some error. And I don't understand what kind of error this. JDBCExceptionReporter.logExceptions(100) | SQL Error: 0, SQLState: null JDBCExceptionReporter.logExceptions(101) | Cannot create PoolableConnectionFactory (FATAL: Ident authentication failed for user "postgres") "postgres" is username. Is anybody knows anything about this error message.
When i try to install Ubuntu 11.04 or try without installing i get graphics like this:[URL] same with older versions, and on older versions i used to get this error: (process:257):GLib-Warning**:getpwuid_r():failed due to unknown user id(0) but on new version it dosent appear. My computer has been installed a system of Windows XP,and I want to experience the outstanding of this Linux system.So I decide to install two system on my computer,but bad luck ,I've found that I can't find the netcard in the new installed system ,and it is the in the primary system.
I've upgraded from Karmic 64-bit kubuntu to the RC build for Lucid. I have two pcs connected to two monitors via an Aten dual head KVM switch. With the new release I only get a background slideshow on one monitor. I can get an image on the first monitor by right clicking and choosing Next Wallpaper image, but it never changes. When I select Desktop Activity Settings both monitors go entirely blank, except for the mouse cursor. The Display Multiple Monitors screen has ticks in all the multiple monitor checkboxes and Identify All Displays correctly identifies both monitors.
Whenever I try to install Xubuntu onto my really old computer (not this one), it goes to a screen that shows nothing except the Xubuntu logo and the name. After a bit, my monitor falls asleep, and I am unable to wake it back up.If I press enter while at this screen, it brings up the error message in the title. The same thing happens with all the options I try to press.
I have a single harddisk partitioned with Ubuntu Maverick and Windows 7 installations. I installed Windows first and then Ubuntu, after resizing partitions and adding a new one for Ubuntu. Win7 did not appear in the Grub2 boot menu. I added it (sda3), but on rebooting, I get the message "BOOTMGR is missing/Press Ctrl+Alt_Del to restart".
I understand that Win7 might have put its boot manager in another partition, and sda1 had FAT. I added sda1 as another grub2 entry, but when I try that, I get the error message "Windows Boot Manager/ Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause... Status 0xc0000225/ Info: The boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible." Attached are fdisk and parted outputs; and the grub2 files I created. How do I get Windows 7 to boot up?
When the RPM runs it come up with this error. How do I install the required dependencies? I have added more repositories, but still there are a few dependencies missing. Is there a zypper/sudo -get or something available? Opensuse 11.1 Gnome
Excited at seeing the new features in 10.04, I clicked the Upgrade button tonight. I am now really regretting it! Problems:
1. My screen resolution should be 1280x1024 but the System>Preferences>Monitors control panel only shows 1024x768.
I think I have onboard Realtek graphics. Do I need to install proprietary drivers? Everything worked fine out of the box with 9.10!
2. The sound isn't working. Again I think I have onboard Realtek sound, and again it used to work fine without any intervention from me...
3. Although on first startup wireless networking was working fine, I restarted to see if that would solve the display issue, and wireless networking stopped working too!
I have an RaLink wireless card.
When I used Grub to choose 2.6.31.20, I got some error messages at startup (e.g. mount couldn't mount /dev), but then it did eventually start up and the sound and wireless networking are working again. But the resolution is still not fixed. It is now offering 1152x864, which it didn't previously, but no 1280x1024 (my screen's native resolution).
