Ubuntu Installation :: Ffmpeg For Firefox Videodownloader Addon - Package Corruption

Jan 8, 2011

I tried to install ffmpeg for Firefox videodownloader addon but did some nasty damage. First of all, I followed this guide: [URL] I'm using Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick 32-bit version The installation froze after this: Quote: Unpacking replacement x11proto-core-dev ... Couldn't find anyone having the same issue on the net, so I just exited the terminal and then I couldn't do anything anymore. When I tried to install again (or remove) that thingy, i got this in console:

Ubuntu :: FoxTab Firefox Addon - Homepage?

Mar 14, 2010

I'm a bit confused but not surprised by this problem I'm having. I liked the look of the FoxTab addon for Firefox (Swiftfox actually but I don't think it should make any difference) mostly for homepage thing it has which is similar to the Chrome/Safari opening page.

I followed the FoxTab instructions for using this page when I open a new tab and that works fine, and then (as instructed) changed my homepage to 'about:blank' but this only works when I click the homepage button. When I open a new Swiftfox session it doesn't come up with anything (just a blank page -

Ubuntu :: Can't Install Firefox Sync Addon?

I am running Ubuntu 10.04 64-bit with Firefox 3.6.13 (from the repositories) and I can't seem to get the Firefox Sync AddOn installed. The addon can be found at:Whenever I try to install it, it comes up with a download error (see attached screenshot). I am running the same version of Ubuntu (albeit 32-bit) and Firefox on my laptop, and I can install it just fine on there. This leads me to think that this problem must have something to do with the 64-bit version.

Fedora :: Unable To Get Last Pass Firefox Addon To Work Correctly On F15 / FF4

Jun 17, 2011

Since moving from centos 5.6 to fedora 15 a week ago I have been unable to get Last Pass firefox addon to work correctly. Those of you familiar to last pass will probably have seen the error message before in a variety of situations, namely "An error occurred while attempting to contact the server. Please check your internet connection." This error appears as soon as you log in (which it does manage to do) but instantly loses authentication - seems like the cookie expires almost instantly and therefore all saved sites/passwords require re-authentication with LP to use.

No network configuration has altered since the OS change, but F15 comes with firefox 4 rather than 3.6.x in centos. I know the last pass plugin should work with FF4 and have read suggestions about SSL/TLS version settings (which are 3.0 and 1.0 respectively) and disabling SELinx. Neither of these have made any difference.

Ubuntu Installation :: Tracker Db Corruption Again

Mar 11, 2010

Between Intrepid and Jaunty, the database schema for Tracker changed from QDBM to SQLite FTS. This caused corruption problems for many, the only solution to which (as far as I can tell) was to delete the contents of .cache/tracker. Unfortunately I have many thousands of file tags which I'm not willing to lose, so that isn't an option for me. So I've stuck with Intrepid, waiting for a solution to come along. It doesn't seem to have happened yet.

So ideally what I'm after is some way to convert my file-meta.db file to the current schema, or a way of exporting and then re-importing my tags. Failing that, a way of running Tracker 0.6.6 under more recent versions of Ubuntu would do.

Ubuntu Installation :: Partition 1TB Drive Without Any Data Corruption?

Jan 6, 2011

I want to install Ubuntu (10.10) on the 1TB drive I need to unplug the SSD while installing it in order to dual boot by pressing F8 (the way I want it to be) so that Grub doesn't get installed on the SSD. What I want to know is can I partition the 1TB drive to install Ubuntu without any data corruption or anything? I have read that NTFS can lose data if partitioned with data already on it (I have no way of backing up my 100GB of files on the drive, as currently this IS my backup drive). What I want to do is have 900GB for files, and a 100GB partition (or partitions adding up to 100GB) for Ubuntu- what is the best way to do this? I don't need seperate partitions for ubuntu, can I install the whole thing to the 100GB partition and boot from it? Or do I need swap as well? I was thinking of making 900GB partition, 4GB partition for swap (if needed) and 96GB partition for Ubuntu (/ if I understand) as this is what the "erase entire drive" option creates.

Ubuntu Installation :: Natty Alpha 1 Console Text Corruption?

Jan 17, 2011

fixing a text corruption issue / advice for filing a bug report (if necessary). So, generally speaking the stability I am experiencing with Natty is as I expect; I'm fully aware that this is a very very early development release and so all sorts of things can go wrong. I just wanted to point that out So while Gnome/Unity are up and running, graphics run more or less perfectly, the boot process text is completely garbled and if after everything is fully loaded I hit Control+Alt+F1-F6 the text looks like:

* this
* the above image close-up

The above links are supposed to be of the ubuntu login prompt. The problem occurred after running the upgrade command:

Code:

sudo do-release-upgrade -d

As is standard upgrade procedure. Is there anything obvious going on that I can tweak to make it all happy again? Since I have a working GUI.

Fedora Installation :: Broken Partition Table - Cause Significant Data Corruption ?

Jul 24, 2009

During a recent request to install fedora 11, I ran into an interesting problem. It seems that between fedora10 and fedora11, the developers switched from fdisk, to parted for creating the initial pre-mke2fs partition table creation.

It looks like the implementation of this is broken, as it's writing the partition table with overlapping cylinder boundaries. While this can sometimes be ignored, it can in certain cases cause significant data corruption.

On an installation I took it through, using the latest installation media, in both manual & automatic partition creation, the layout looked like this:

The last two partitions turn out fine, for some reason. However, those two partitions should not have overlapping cylinders. After my very first installation, the system was completely unbootable, and not even fsck wouldn't rescue it. If this is possible, then that means that a system that's been online for months or even years could simply drop out of functionality simply due to a byte or two of system-critical data falling on that last cylinder. Considering that a lot of the time kernel data ends up on /dev/sda1 (commonly the /boot partition), this is something that should not be ignored.

Ubuntu Installation :: Partial Update - Ffmpeg To Be Removed

Aug 10, 2010

Just wondering if anyone else has this partial upgrade being offered to them: ffmpeg, libavdevice52, libpostproc51, libswscale0 are held back (grayed out) in Update Manager.

I only use Update Manager manager to see if there are any updates and then use sudo apt-get update, sudo apt-get-upgrade and sudo apt-get dist-upgrade to actually examine the updates as it shows if anything will be removed without anything to replace it.

And I know to never do a partial upgrade.

Update Manager displays "Partial Upgrade" with the files listed above grayed out.

I did use sudo apt-get-upgrade to install a few packages earlier that were safe to install and now -

sudo apt-get-upgrade currently gives this output:

Code:
The following packages have been kept back:
ffmpeg libavdevice52 libpostproc51 libswscale0
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 4 not upgraded

Ubuntu Installation :: Two Versions Of FFMPEG On Non Default Locations?

I have an assignment as follow. I have to install 2 versions of FFMPEG 0.6.1 and Alexander Strange on non default locations with all required dependencies and check the dependancies for each of these and make sure to install the required dependancies in the local folder of the app rather than at the system root.

The flags to set for the above must include

Now how to install them? and how to run them simultaneously? Do let me know if any other thing/info required.
