Ubuntu Installation :: Partial Update - Ffmpeg To Be Removed

Aug 10, 2010

Just wondering if anyone else has this partial upgrade being offered to them: ffmpeg, libavdevice52, libpostproc51, libswscale0 are held back (grayed out) in Update Manager.

I only use Update Manager manager to see if there are any updates and then use sudo apt-get update, sudo apt-get-upgrade and sudo apt-get dist-upgrade to actually examine the updates as it shows if anything will be removed without anything to replace it.

And I know to never do a partial upgrade.

Update Manager displays "Partial Upgrade" with the files listed above grayed out.

I did use sudo apt-get-upgrade to install a few packages earlier that were safe to install and now -

sudo apt-get-upgrade currently gives this output:

Code:
The following packages have been kept back:
ffmpeg libavdevice52 libpostproc51 libswscale0
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 4 not upgraded

Ubuntu Installation :: Update My System Without Having Efi-grub Removed?

Jul 15, 2011

I'm running Kubuntu natty on grub-efi-amd64. I've just received notification of a bunch of new packages to install, I believe part of it is a kernel update. When I click on "apply" a window comes up which says "Additional changes are required to complete the task". "2 packages to remove" lists "grub-efi" and "grub-efi-amd64". It lists 5 packages to install 3 of which are linux kernel and 2 of which are the bios version of grub.

How can I update my system without having efi-grub removed?

Ubuntu :: Unable To Access 10.04 After Partial Update?

May 17, 2010

After a large partial update (including nvidia drivers as well as a lot of other stuff - sorry for the imprecision but it was long enough to merit stepping away to eat dinner), my computer crashed when I tried to shut it down, and now when I try to boot up, it takes me as far as the login screen (minus the logins) with the mouse pointer active. It plays the Ubuntu drums and then that's it for activity. The mouse moves with no problem but there's nothing to click on. Going into recovery mode causes the system to hang. I can only access my files via a live cd.

When the computer first crashed and before it goes to the almost-but-not-quite-a-login screen, it displays the following message:

Code:
/usr/lib/libgconf2-4/gconf-sanity-check-2 exited with status 256

I'm finding it ironic that the error occurs in a "sanity check" because it's costing me mine. Is there a solution that doesn't involve a new install?

I'm running an Intel Celeron 1.7 GHz with 2 gigs of RAM and an nvidia MX4000 video card with 128 MB RAM (yes, its last OS was written in cuneiform ;p)

Ubuntu Networking :: No Wireless/Ethernet After Partial Update

Nov 7, 2010

I am running Ubuntu 10.10

I am using an Intel WiFi Link 4965AGN built in adapter.

When I was prompted for a system-update I clicked Update and apparently something failed an only a partial-update happened. Now my wireless/Ethernet connections do not work. I tried enabling all Network Adapters but that option is no longer available in the "Preference/Administration" tab.

Note: I cannot access the internet at all on that partition so I can't download any updates from repositories.

Ubuntu :: Kernel Missing After Partial Update Ubuntu 9.10

I messed up and hit "ok" for a partial upgrade. My fault entirely.

Now Grub finds no kernel to boot to, only a disk diagnostic test runs when I try to boot.

Is there a way to reload a kernel to dev/sha1 from the live cd terminal?

I'd rather not lose the data on the drive with a fresh install if I don't have to.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: FFmpeg Symbol Lookup Error After Possible Update

Jan 5, 2010

I noticed that a lot of software updates were ready today so I installed all of them without thinking to make a note of what they were, so I don't know if ffmpeg or one of its dependencies was amongst them. The very next time I ran ffmpeg, it gave me an error I haven't seen before. After downloading a file from BBC's iPlayer site using get-iplayer, I ran a script to convert it to a format suitable for my Samsung YP-Q2 personal media player. I copied the command out of that script and pasted it onto the command line so that I could capture the console output of that encoding session, shown below:

Code:
[garry tv]$ ffmpeg -i inputfile.mp4 -acodec libmp3lame -ar 44100 -ab 128k -ac 2 -vcodec mpeg4 -b 1024k -r 15 -s qvga outputfile.avi

ffmpeg: symbol lookup error: ffmpeg: undefined symbol: avcodec_channel_layout_num_channels
[garry tv]$

This error, "undefined symbol" is what makes me think that either ffmpeg or one of its dependencies has been updated or the error would have occurred before now. I've been using the script with the command in the above form for some weeks now with no problems, almost always converting an MP4 (but sometimes a .mov) into an AVI. Thinking that it might be the version of ffmpeg in the standard repos, I followed the advice of this thread and removed the standard ffmpeg and installed the one from Medibuntu. (Removing the standard one took WinFF and DVDRip with it, but I reinstalled those afterwards, and I'm sure they don't come into the equation otherwise.) I re-ran the command and the error was exactly as before. Is ffmpeg recently borked or am I missing something obvious? Or something obscure, for that matter?

Ubuntu Installation :: Partial - XP Partition - Do Not Have The Key

Jan 29, 2011

I have an older Dell Inspiron e1505. The hard-drive went bad years ago and I look to revive it. I purchased a new hard-drive and proceeded to install Windows XP Pro that I have a partial install of XP professional but do not have the key. Microsoft explained because I cannot find I would have to buy a new one instead of keeping my key within their Microsoft store. So instead of purchasing a new key I would like to install the latest version of Ubuntu and go the Linux route.

I downloaded the latest version(non pc I believe) and have it booting of the Cdrom. I am now stuck because it bypasses the cdrom /disk and starts to load XP home again. Will continue to research as I move forward but would definitely like some pointers on what I can do as far as removing the partial install of Windows XP home.

Ubuntu Installation :: How To Do Partial Clean Install Rather Than Upgrade

Apr 14, 2010

I have a compaq nx7010. It started out with 8.04 or perhaps 8.10. I upgraded it through to 9.04 when that became available. I have not upgraded to 9.10 year, because I recall it took me a fair amount of time to get my system working correctly after the 9.04 upgrade. At a guess, audio went down, wifi broke, and that sort of thing. I am now finding that apps I use are not releasing new versions compatible with 9.04. And I see 10.04 is on its way, and I understand it is best to go from one upgrade to the next rather than jump a release.

Here's my question:
I get the impression it is cleaner and more stable to do a clean install as opposed to an upgrade. I've also seen many people expressing that view. I've always just gone with upgrading because I didn't like the thought of having to set my whole computer up the way I like it, again. Is there a way to do a clean install that will keep my system the way I like it? For instance, to not have to reconfigure every application?

I have my partitions set up like this:
ext3 /home
ext3 /
linuxswap

Just how much config related stuff is stored in the /home folder? Or is this purely user files? What is the consensus? Is it better to upgrade or to do a clean install? My intention is to have a stable system that does not require hours of my time to get sound and wifi working, with the latest release on it (so that I can run the latest apps).

Ubuntu Installation :: Not All Updates Installed - Run Partial Upgrade

Sep 29, 2010

I am using the latest Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid lynx. Sometimes ago while I am updating my operating system to linux-image-2.6.32-25-generic (2.6.32-25.44) with update manager, after downloading all the files it was running the installation. During installation suddenly my pc turned off, may be for some power issue. Then while I again start my pc and tried to restart the update process the update manager show me a message. "Not all updates can be install. Run a partial upgrade, to install as many as updates as possible."

This can be caused by:
* A previous upgrade which didn't complete.
* Problem with some of the installed software.
* Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu.
* Normal changes of a pre-release version of Ubuntu.

Then I tried to open the synaptic package manager. But it didn't open either and show another message which suggest to run the command in the terminal: "sudo dpkg --configure -a". And unluckily it wasn't work. and show the messgae:
"dpkg: parse error, in file '/var/lib/dpkg/updates/0103' near line 0: newline in field name `#padding'".

Ubuntu Installation :: System Crash After Partial Upgrade 10.10?

Apr 7, 2011

I have a Dell studio running ubuntu for two years now. I had ubuntu 10.04, but a few days ago, the update manager started to bug me that some stuff don't work properly and that I need to to a partial upgrade. I postponed that for a while, and all worked fine, but I finally had sometime and clicked "yes", all began collapsing:

1) the update manager crashed while updating.

2) I rebooted and ran it again. same crash at the same stage.

3) I decided, god knows why, to do a full upgrade to 10.10, which also crasehd.

Now it won't even boot. It always get stuck at a line saying "no IPv6 routers present" or something of that sort. when I switch off manually the wireless switch on the laptop, the boot gets stuck a bit earlier, on a line that says: "laptop login:"

EDIT: I just remembered something which might be important: I had a hibernation problem on the upgrade to 10.04, so I played around a bit with that. now it uses libgcrypt, and I remember I set up something manually then, but I can't remember what.

Ubuntu Installation :: Apt-get Corrupts Partial Downloads Frequently?

Jun 4, 2011

I'm using 10.04.2, and I find that whenever I'm trying update (whether using synaptic, or command-line apt-get), the package download starts off fine, but after downloading a few files (usually only 4 or 5), the next partial (ongoing) downloads become corrupt, all the remaining downloads stay in the partial folder and finally apt-get gives a size mismatch error .I'm forced to watch the update progress the entire time and wait for the downloads to corrupt (at this point the progress bar stops at say, "Downloading file 4 of 70" but the details show subsequent files are being downloaded)the update process and clean the /var/cache/apt/archives/partial folder (NOT the archives folder, or all the packages will have to be downloaded again). Then I restart the update and it picks up after the last successfully downloaded .deb.

Effectively, every such iteration downloads 3-5 .deb files successfully, and corrupts the remaining. Needless to say, if I'm upgrading 50 packages, it gets really frustratingI faced this problem even on new installations on my system as well as a friend's. Lucid, Maverik, Natty all have the same problem. By new installations, I mean on the very first boot, I setup the network (I'm behind a proxy server in a university) and that's it. I tried Linux Mint and it had the same problem.

Ubuntu :: Why The Possibility Of Installation Was Removed From 10.4

May 8, 2010

I have never ever have a single installation issue with ubuntu (been using it for years and years, and before I used other distributions for years). Now I want to install Ubuntu 10.4 alongside Windows 7. I don't have any other demands or wishes, just for it to install. Unfortunately, there is no way to do that. The installer is always stopping at a "no root file system is defined". When I go to gparted in the liveCD version it shows my entire drive as free, unallocated space (although there are at least 3 partitions, one of them with working windows 7).The LiveCD sees the partitions all righ, I can access the windows partitions without any problem. Fdisk -l also shows my partitions properly. Gparted, however, for some reason doesn't recognize them.

I have only two options:

1) use whole drive (which would erase my windows 7 - no, no)

2) set up manually (which says all my 250gb drive is unallocated space). No other choices.

And generally the installer of ubuntu says "This computer has no operating systems on it."

Installing through wubi doesn't work as well. After restart it wants to install but reaches sth like 257% on "getting time from server" and says there's no root filesystem. So it's all basically about ubuntu not wanting to acknowledge the simple fact that there are already partitions and OS's on my drive...
