OpenSUSE :: Firefox 3.5.x Takes Huge Amount Of Time While Adding Addon

Dec 17, 2009

When I search addons with firefox, it takes 4 mins to connect to server, and after approving to ad it, it again takes that much time to connect to download. While downloading it's ok, but connecting to server takes time. This is for all addons. Is there any body having same issue?

Slackware :: Huge Amount Of Groups (LFS Built)

Feb 19, 2010

Does anyone notice that Slackware's user/groups is cluttered with things no one will ever need, do you need be to be part of the slocate group? like really? Why doesn't every program just have its own group then, I look at my distro (LFS built), SuSE and some others and I can't help but notice the huge amount of groups in slackware, if you going to add groups for everything then why in the universe do we even need sudo for? Just make the binary you want to work a group and change its ownership..... wtf is Pat and the rest of Slackware doing?

CentOS 5 :: X/Gnome Takes Long Time To Load And Sudo Takes Long Time To Execute

Oct 13, 2009

I am running Centos 5.3. I ran no updates, performed no installs, nor changed any configuration immediately prior to this issue. My problem is this: when I run the command startx (default runlevel 3), it is a long time (5-10 minutes) before Gnome startx, and once it does start applications will not run. Also, when I try to use sudo (from any environment, even ssh), it is a long time (5-10) before the command is executed.

I cannot say for sure, but it seems like this is an intermittent problem. Sometimes X takes a long time to start, but once it starts it will launch programs. Sometimes X takes a long time to launch, but once it starts it will only launch certain programs. Though presently X always takes a long time to start, and I cannot successfully launch any programs.

A while back a had a similar problem to this (x taking long time to start, sudo taking long time to execute) and it ended up being a DNS problem. Unfortunately, I cannot remember exactly what it was and I stupidly did not document it. Maybe this is also DNS related, I don't know.

I don't know what log files to look at for problems with X, Gnome, and sudo taking a long time to start.

Ubuntu :: Determined That A Huge Amount Of Disk Space Is Being Taken Up By Files In /var/log/?

I examined the problem, and determined that a huge amount of disk space is being taken up by files in /var/log/ The following files:

Code:
/var/log/messages.1
/var/log/kern.log.1
/var/log/daemon.log.1
/var/log/messages
/var/log/kern.log
/var/log/daemon.log
/var/log/syslog

are all over 1 GB in size. The largest is 18 GB. Together, they total 48.3 GB. I restarted the system, forcing a fsck.

Debian :: Upon Logging In - Get A Huge Amount Of /dev/null - Permission Denied

Mar 16, 2009

I've all of a sudden been getting permission denied for almost everything I try to do. Upon logging in, I get a huge amount of "/dev/null: Permission denied"

The only way I can manage to get to the terminal is by Ctrl-C. It never brings up the command line, unless I do that.

If I try to startX, I get errors, also saying permission denied, and then one that says

Code:

I also get many "failed" errors when booting, most of them saying that a file could not be found/located.

Check the thread link at the top for other information in the first post.

I could reinstall Debian, but the computer I am using is a Libretto 110CT (64MB RAM), which has only a PCMCIA drive, for which I have a USB port replicator. There is no CD drive.

It was also a custom install fitted for the computer, so I'd rather not have to set everything up again, nor would I know how to exactly, as I've never done it before.

OpenSUSE Install :: Shutdown Takes Very Long Time - 2 Min - Possibly Due To Network ?

Oct 21, 2010

OS: OpenSuse 11.2 64 bit
Machine: HP 8540p i5 4Gb

Shutting down my machine takes a very long time! Not convenient when one want to pack his laptop (I don't dare to when the fan is still blowing).

Upon shutdown, I press 'esc' and see what's happening. The last commands seem to hang. First, shutting down the network interfaces seem to last long than needed (eth0, pan0, wlan0). Sometimes, it stalls also on "networkmanager disconnecting from DBUS" (or something like this ) (which is the very last command executed). Hmm, I will write the exact command down.

Ubuntu :: FoxTab Firefox Addon - Homepage?

I'm a bit confused but not surprised by this problem I'm having. I liked the look of the FoxTab addon for Firefox (Swiftfox actually but I don't think it should make any difference) mostly for homepage thing it has which is similar to the Chrome/Safari opening page.

I followed the FoxTab instructions for using this page when I open a new tab and that works fine, and then (as instructed) changed my homepage to 'about:blank' but this only works when I click the homepage button. When I open a new Swiftfox session it doesn't come up with anything (just a blank page -

I am running the same version of Ubuntu (albeit 32-bit) and Firefox on my laptop, and I can install it just fine on there. This leads me to think that this problem must have something to do with the 64-bit version.

Fedora :: Unable To Get Last Pass Firefox Addon To Work Correctly On F15 / FF4

Jun 17, 2011

Since moving from centos 5.6 to fedora 15 a week ago I have been unable to get Last Pass firefox addon to work correctly. Those of you familiar to last pass will probably have seen the error message before in a variety of situations, namely "An error occurred while attempting to contact the server. Please check your internet connection." This error appears as soon as you log in (which it does manage to do) but instantly loses authentication - seems like the cookie expires almost instantly and therefore all saved sites/passwords require re-authentication with LP to use.

No network configuration has altered since the OS change, but F15 comes with firefox 4 rather than 3.6.x in centos. I know the last pass plugin should work with FF4 and have read suggestions about SSL/TLS version settings (which are 3.0 and 1.0 respectively) and disabling SELinx. Neither of these have made any difference.

OpenSUSE Network :: IPv6 Getting A Global Address Takes A Long Time - Possibly Only After Starting A KDE Session

Jul 8, 2011

My ISP offers the service of native IPv6. So my ADSL router provides me with a local and global IPv6 address. However after a reboot it takes minutes to finally see the global address when using "ifconfog eth0". During that time I can't do a ping6 to an external server, which seems logical. So I waited several minutes, but no global address. After that I started a KDE session, went back to the console(<Ctrl>+<Alt>+F1) and now the global address was there. Is this normal behavior or should I file bug report?

Ubuntu :: After Log In Takes Long Time To Show Desktop, Monitor Events At Log In Time?

May 24, 2011

It takes me a while to log in the splash screen just sits there for ages before i get to the desktop. Never used to be this slow and I'm not sure why. Firstly, I'm running Ubuntu 11.04, standard DE. I do have conky starting up in a script but it has the & at the end of the line so I didn't think this would cause it (or is there some special case for log in time on how & is treated?). However as a test I will comment out the line in the script and see if it is the cause.

However just for general knowledge and in case that isn't the problem, how does one go seeing what is happening during the time from when one log's in and the desktop is displayed? Is there some kind of log that shows the date/time that can be enabled or is there a debug mode that can be enabled somehow via special keys or maybe from grub?

Ubuntu :: Auto Suspend After Certain Amount Of Time?

Feb 8, 2011

Most nights I fall asleep watching tv or movies. I want the computer to go to sleep after I do. Under Power Management Properties I have "put computer to sleep when inactive for 1:00" yes - to " spin down hard disks" and "put display to sleep when inactive for 1:00"

I'd say 65% of the time I wake up and the computer is running, not suspended, and 45% of the time the monitor is still on. Over the past 8 months or so I have been trying different media players. I tend to have the same problem of the computer not sleeping with all of them. (Banshee, Miro, xbmc, boxee, vlc, totem, )

1. Is there a process I can look for that may be running some of the time that would hinder the suspend function?

2. Is there a simple script I can write for "suspend in 90 minutes"

3. I think I remember seeing way to do this from the CLI with pm-suspend, yeah?

Edit- I found this http://bit.ly/hpThVM
Things I tested that didn't work
~$ sudo echo pm-suspend | at 12:27
~$ sudo sleep 30s

General :: Process - Run A Script For A Specified Amount Of Time Before Stopping And Restarting

Jul 15, 2010

Possibly related to this previous question, I would like to be able to run a task for a specified amount of time, then stop/kill it, then start it again. Specifically, I run the Folding@Home application on my Linux workstation. Periodically, it will have trouble logging-in to the home server, and will sit idle for a long time, but not release memory/resources it has claimed (yes, I realize this is likely a bug in the tool, but I can't fix that currently). Typically just the act of killing and starting the tool will allow it to check-in again. So, I would like to be able to run something like:

run_for <time> ./fah6

Does such a tool exist, or should I write a wrapper than nukes the fah6 client after, say, a week and restart it?
