I am dealing with a problem which I cannot seem to fix myself.I have a computer (age ~1 year) on which I am trying to install Ubuntu.The problem which I am facing is at the point of choosing to boot from the CD it says 'cannot find bootable device'.Note that this PC does not have a floppy drive and that I do not have a 1GB USB stick. I do have a 256MB USB stick.
View 9 RepliesInstalled ubuntu 10.4 over previous ubuntu on Intel 945G. After installation and reboot the system does not boot: "no bootable device - insert boot disk and press any key".
Installation was done from USB-stick, prepared by UNETBOOTin. I have two HD's, one used for system + storage, another one just for storage. I manually deleted previous system partitions of previous ubuntu install in system HD. The system HD had about 1/3 of free and unallocated space for system partitions, which ubuntu installer created during the installation.
I tried to reinstall grub from bootable USB-stick and it succeeded but it did not help. The system is still not bootable.
I have used ubuntu for years and never happened something like this. Am I missing something or is ubuntu missing something???
HW failure is ofcourse possible but I am quite skeptical about it because Live ubuntu from USB-stick works well.
i had a working multi-boot system, vista on sda1,2; swap sda3; ext=sda4; ubuntu sda5; fedora sda6; data sda7 - i mount the data partition when using all of the linux releases so i don't have to have multiple copies of music, docs, etc. everything has worked fine until yesterday. i tried to install fc12 on sda6, replacing fc11. it required me to format sda6 as ext4. i wasn't sure where i had grub installed, but have a backup of menu.lst in data (sda7), so figured i could let it install to mbr or wherever it wanted to by default. when the install completed and i reboot, i get a black screen and these messages: CLIENT MAC ADDR: 00 19 XX XX XX GUID: XXXXX PXE-E53:
No boot filename received

No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key I tried reinstalling fc12, same exact errors. I then thought maybe the problem had something to do with ext4 partition mixed in with ext3's, so i installed mepis on the sda6, and let it write grub to mbr (i think, not really sure where it wrote it). anyway, i still get the identical black screen. no grub type menu or anything. the screen used to show "DHCP for a few seconds", but doesn't anymore after i disconnected the ethernet cable.........
Today I installed Fedora (I need it for school), but not everything seems to work fine Before installing Fedora on my Macbook I had a triple booting machine: Mac OSX snow leopard, Windows 7 and Ubuntu. (using rEFIt) All of them where working. Since I installed Fedora on the 4th partition I can only boot Mac OSX. When selecting one of the other OS's it says: "no bootable device insert boot disk and press any key"
View 5 Replies View RelatedFrom one day to the other my system stopped booting properly. Since I (finally) fixed it, I wanted to share my solution. It runs on a fakeraid pair of SSD's of 60 GB each (actually a single Revodrive device, but it shows up as two devices). When Ubuntu 10.10 boots, I'm dropped to a shell.During boot, when I removed "silent splash" from the kernel's command line, I got these messages:

After installing this, the problem was solved!! This is strange since I don't recall uninstalling this package or changing anything important, for that matter (perhaps did apt-get upgrade, but that's about it!). [URL]
I installed Debian Jessie (netinst, daily snapshot) on my Acer Aspire V5-123 laptop in the UEFI mode with the secure boot turned off. everything (network, hardware, partitioning, ...) went smoothly to the last step, but after removing the boot media (USB stick) and rebooting, the firmware could not find the boot device ! The only thing I can think of, is that the EFI boot is not set up properly by Debian installer, but I don't know how to fix it.
View 11 Replies View RelatedI have dell laptop running with windows xp and im trying to install ubuntu 10.10 by booting it from a cd.
I verified the image I downloaded by comparing the hash and it worked out fine. I wrote the image into a cd and changed the booting priority on the BIOS to boot from the drive. When attempting to boot I get the "No bootable device found strike F1 to retry, F2 for setup or F5 to run onboard diagnostics" message.
I tried upgrading to Natty last night through the update wizard and the install went perfectly... until I rebooted and it got stuck at a screen with an "_" in the top left corner of the screen and nothing else. I guessed that this was a grub problem, so I tried reinstalling grub2, but to no avail. So, I burned a Natty install CD and proceeded to reinstall, formatting the partition (/home was on another partition and did not get formatted). Again, the install went great, rebooted and this time I get "No Bootable Device - Please insert a bootable device and hit enter". So, again, I try re-installing grub2 from the live CD. I purge, uninstall, and reinstall grub2... nothing works! What the hell?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have Ubuntu 10.10 on my laptop currently and my mom would like to have it on hers as well. However, she does not want to get rid of Windows 7, or use Wubi (for some reason). So, my only choice is to dual boot it. While I was installing it onto my laptop there was an option to choose the partitioning. There wasn't an option to do this on my her laptop though because you can only have 4 partitions on a hard drive apparently. The partitions are:
NAME (TYPE)
System (NTFS)
C: (NTFS)
Recovery (NTFS)
HP TOOLS (FAT32)
Is there anyway to backup a partition (Like Recovery) and make it bootable from a flash drive/CD? Or is there any other work around from this?
I am trying to install fedora 14 from live CD (USB boot) in my system which already has Windows 7. The installation goes fine however when I reboot the system I get 'No bootble device found' error. install fedora on the entire hard disk which I cannot do right now.
In Bios there are 'Native' and 'Legacy' options for 'ATA/IDE Mode' and if I select 'Native', 'Configure SATA as' option is enabled with options 'AHCI' and 'IDE'. I reinstalled fedora with all possible configuration, Legacy mode, Native + AHCI, Native + IDE but got the same error when booting. I have also tried options; MBR on /dev/sda and first boot record on /dev/sda5.

I have a dell Inspiron 5150. I had perfect windows XP home installation, and decided to dual boot with Ubunutu 10.04. I copied the whole C:/ to external drive, installed ubuntu, installed windows, repaired Grub2, but now, Grub2 looks something like this.

Sorry for the hard to understand title but it's difficult to describe in one sentence. What I'd like to do is install Windows and several different versions of Linux on the same system. After everything is installed, I'd like to switch between operating systems *from inside the operation systems*.
Example: I'm inside Windows but I want to reboot into Ubuntu 9.04. I need to run a command to update the boot manager so it knows to boot into Ubuntu 9.04.
I do not want to walk to the physical box to make a menu selection. EDIT: I'd like to be able to switch between Windows 7 and Ubuntu (9.04, 10.04, and 10.10)
I am having a problem with my new Toshiba Satellite Laptop... I had installed debian for some time but last week suddenly stopped working.
- the computer stopped working at all... nor bios access.
- I did a new bootable installation in USB drive and downloaded the latest debian iso from official website and created the bootable device via dd as usual.
- I installed the new debian but after I removed the usb drive in order to boot into my new system. I was taken to a screen saying "Start PXE over IPv6 -- Start PXE over IPv4 ..." I followed several links looking for a fix, and all of them lead me to disable network boot option in BIOS setup...
- I disabled but after that it appears a new message "No Bootable device -- Press restart system" and nothing happens from there.
- I have found info in Internet regarding this issue, but all I find is "windows related"
- Someone recommended me this: "The BIOS can no longer recognize the hard drive as a bootable device. This could be for a number of reasons. Your best bet, if it is still under warranty, is going to be to bring it back to where you purchased it"
- But instead, what I did was to create a new bootable device, this time containing XUBUNTU and installed it to the machine, I had the good news that the installation proceed without any problem, so I could figured out that my machine it is still alive...
- Back to my issue and hoping that something unexpected happened that fixed the machine, I got back and did a new Debian bootable device, also hoping that the latest was corrupted or something, but after reboot to my new system... the problem persisted again.
- I chose to have 1 partition in full disk.
Now I don't know what else to do... I don't like ubuntu, I have used debian for some years and I want to keep using it and I would not like to be forced to move to ubuntu or xubuntu for this.
I updated yesterday and now when I start my laptop it goes in to grub rescue mode. I have booted from a 'live cd' and thought I could repair grub from there. In gparted however the partition with ubuntu (sda1) is seen as unknown file system, in terminal when I list the partition table it shows up as FAT16 type. When I try a grub-install it gives this error message:

I purchased a book about Linux called the Linux Starter Kit. It came with a full install disc. The disc is labeled: Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope, Bootable & Installable LiveCD.
After playing with the thing for a while, I decided to take the plunge and install it on my Dell Inspiron laptop. I went through the entire install. Everything worked fine. I shut the computer down.
The very next time I turned on the computer I got the message "BIOS does not find a bootable source."
Right now, the laptop is a big paperweight--unless I either learn how to get Ubuntu to run installed so I can do real work with it, or reinstall XP.
I just compiled my first own kernel (I'm using Arch Linux), following the tutorial on the german site. The failure message was the same, just the root device name was the different name Also, at first I did not have the initrd line in my menu.lst (as written in my tutorial that I may not need it). I switched to the linux-image-rt kernel a while back, and decided yesterday to switch back to linux-image-generic. Unfortunately, I couldn't remember how to do this properly, so I just uninstalled all of the linux-rt related packages and then changed the /vmlinuz and /initrd.img symbolic links back to what they used to be and rebooted. So now the machine gets stuck in a memtest whenever I boot from the HD. I'm having trouble figuring out how to fix things from a rescue CD. If I try chroot /mnt/hd (where my old system was), and then update-grub, for example, I get: /usr/sbin/grub-probe: error: cannot find a device for / (is /dev mounted?). So, basically I'm completely lost, but also sure that a working system isn't more than a few simple commands away. Can anyone throw me a bone?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have two drives (sde 120Gb) and sdh(250Gb) which I want to use for the following setup: sde + 120Gb of sdh as a striped LVM as an ext4 partition remaining 130Gb of sdh as a separate ext4 partition I am able to use the build in partition manager in Mandriva to set up the rest of my disks and I can set up an LVM as planned above, but I find no way of choosing whether it should be linear or striped. This means I will most likely have to do it from the command line. Can someone tell correct commands to set it up?

Since I can not boot from the SSD, I thought I'd load the kernel from the old PATA disc and then mount / to the SSD.

Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key. I got this error after: Reducing my Windows 7 partition by about 100gb. Creating a new partition (100gb) and copying my Ubuntu partition (10gb) to the new partition. After it was copied, and pasted, the original partition was deleted. I now had two partitions a new 100gb Ubuntu partition and a 600gb (or so) Windows 7 partition.
All of this was done using a bootable USB with Ubuntu 10.10 and GParted partition editor. Now when I boot I get the "Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key." error.
I installed Debian lenny 5.04 today through netinstall. After install it refuses to boot and says, "No bootable device found - "insert and press any key".

I'm installing Fedora 11 x86_64 from the DVD iso. The SHA256 checksum was fine, and the media checked out fine just prior to install. The F11 install seems to go perfectly and I get all the way through the installation. However, on reboot, I get this message, "No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key"!!!!I'm installing to an old Intel 975XBX2 motherboard with 4GB of memory, which I have used successfully, flawlessly for every single Fedora install since F6. I've only been using one hard drive with a FAT32 partition, and an NTFS partition for Windows XP, the remainder of the disk is Fedora.I've probably tried this F11 install about 8 or 9 times already with no success; actually, the installation seems to go perfectly, but I just cannot boot the PC. I think there's something wrong with GRUB being written into the MBR of the hard drive, because I cannot boot DOS on that FAT32 partition, I can't boot into the NTFS partition which contains XP, nor can I boot into F11.Anyone else having problems with the boot? I've been a long time Fedora user and was counting on the reliability of F11: Wondering if that Anaconda re-write had anything to do with all of these problems?

System was working reliably. Moved components into a new case. Now system will not boot. Either gives error that the disk is not bootable or displays the motherboard configuration screen.
I am able to boot Debian with a USB drive and have attempted fixes in "rescue mode".
I confirmed that the system is booting to EFI mode.
I have tried re-installing the grub-efi package and re-creating the Grub config file with update-grub.
When re-installing Grub I receive "Discarding improperly nested partition ..." warnings but the installation succeeds. I have searched this warning message and the forums seem to say that it can be ignored.
I have tried re-setting the motherboard NVRAM using the jumper block.
The computer shows "debian" as a boot choice in addition to the usual raw drive model listing. However, neither of the choices will boot successfully.
managed to get things working so well on my laptop i thought i'd install ubuntu onto an external drive so i can boot to either xp or Ubuntu whenever i want, when i started up after the install it doesn't recognise the drive i loaded it to and appears to have lost the link to xp. the exact words are:

Made a persistent 10.10 usb to try out une - loved it, great job. Decided to install it together with the Windows7 already on my laptop. Did the standard installation - went well. Restarted without the persistent usb. And what starts up - Windows7. I was expecting the old menu (ala 9.10) which allowed me to choose whether I start W7 or Ubuntu. So can somebody please tell me how I get Ubuntu to start from disc and how I get to choose which os starts up. Surely Canonical's preference is not that I use W7?

I've installed a Squeeze-based distro - Crunchbang - with an encrypted root partition (no LVM), and it won't boot.
Here's what I get: Loading initial ramdisk. Loading, Gave up waiting for root device ALERT! /dev/mapper/hda5_crypt does not exist. Dropping to a shell!
Here's my partition table:
hda1 - Windows (Truecrypted)
hda2 - GRUB2
hda5 - /
hda6 - unused swap

What should I look for? Where do I go from the initramfs shell? Do I chroot? What then? This might be a Crunchbang issue (although others blame LVM which I didn't use, and it's the original Debian installer after all), but there's gotta be a reason it doesn't boot

Could i install ubuntu and whenever i boot my pc up, is it possible to boot up automatically into windows without any OS choosing screen appearing; and instead only boot into ubuntu when i have the livecd in my drive and boot from it?Im the only one who knows about Ubuntu in my family and most would be quite confused if they didnt find thereselves booting into windows as they normally would. So to get around this and to have Ubuntu at the same time, i want to only be able to access ubuntu by putting in the live cd and booting it from that. Or is it possible for information that i download etc. to be stored onto the livecd itself?
