Ubuntu Installation :: BIOS Can't Find Bootable Source?

I purchased a book about Linux called the Linux Starter Kit. It came with a full install disc. The disc is labeled: Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope, Bootable & Installable LiveCD.
After playing with the thing for a while, I decided to take the plunge and install it on my Dell Inspiron laptop. I went through the entire install. Everything worked fine. I shut the computer down.
The very next time I turned on the computer I got the message "BIOS does not find a bootable source."
Right now, the laptop is a big paperweight--unless I either learn how to get Ubuntu to run installed so I can do real work with it, or reinstall XP.

I installed Ubuntu 7.10 on my desktop a month ago before I left my apartment for winter break. It worked beautifully for the week I used it, but now the computer won't boot. I'm using the ubuntu live cd right now to type this. I can't install it over my last hdd because apparently both of my hdds aren't bootable. I unplugged the computer for the month I was gone and the BIOS date reset to 2004. I'm not sure if that affected anything, whether I need to replace the CMOS battery? The computer was built in 2004 so I'm thinking the battery might be old. Basically the computer functions on the live cd, just won't boot from either hdd.

I have a laptop that I need to update the BIOS but I cant get into Windows. Here is what I want to do.I know I need a DOS boot able disk. I figured I would download the FreeDOS disk and just add a file to the iso and burn the ISO. So far I cannot do that and I don't know how or even if there is a way to do this. So the long of the short of it is I need a bootable cd that is dos based and has my BIOS update file on it.

I am dealing with a problem which I cannot seem to fix myself.I have a computer (age ~1 year) on which I am trying to install Ubuntu.The problem which I am facing is at the point of choosing to boot from the CD it says 'cannot find bootable device'.Note that this PC does not have a floppy drive and that I do not have a 1GB USB stick. I do have a 256MB USB stick.

Anyone here knows the OpenSuse install CD runthrough? I am using DELL pc's, and remember installing Linux as being a few almost basic steps on my self assembled clone pc's in my youth. Now, over ten years later I want to redo that and return to my old playground. I am using after over 12 years administering MS stuff again applications running on unix (solaris) at my work. Its like homecoming but in a difficult way, I am brainwashed and not really into unix anymore. So... lets install linux again at home. Returning to my favorite Suse distribution in the old days (who knows why).
I went through the installation (Opensuse11) simple, standard to start with, so mainly next (ACPI disabled). Rebooted... and the pc finds no recognized bootable HDD. OK, well, try again, other HDD to be sure, results in the same. Set manually the root partition as active. No go, I feel as a newbie again. What happened to me in those last years? Tried to do it also with a fedora distri - same outcome. When plugging these HDD in another recent (DELL) pc, it also does not recognize the HDD as bootable. Both disks have been part of a system before and functioned; until I changed this system for this other purpose. Probably i am missing something basic??

I need to install a bios update to fix my PC after I upgraded the CPU. BIOS update should fix it.
But...This seems to be way harder than it should be. I'd be great if motherboard manufacturers could provide bootable iso images with all the tools to do the job without us having the build these ourselves...
Anyway, how do I go about creating a freedos bootable CDR under Kubuntu that is BIGGER than 1.44 MB!
My image file is 1MB already. The flashing program 32KB. I tried the methods from the various forums and just couldn't get them to work. Either ran out of space, or all the links to fdos were broken.
By the way, [url] doesn't seem to be right anymore and thats where everyone is pointing. I would probably have had this sorted if I could have the 2.88 MB image, but all I can find is a 1.44MB image and I have now idea how you can grow that to a bigger one. Why be stuck with 1.44MB? are we still in the 1990's ?

I'm looking for a way to make a bootable floppy that has drdflash.img, my flash utility and my bios file on it for a bios recovery disk. This is on a board that has a failed bios, so everything is pretty much dead (except for the humble floppy drive). I don't have a screen to work with so this floppy needs to be able to run the utility and automatically flash the chip for me. I've heard this is possible, but am unable to find clear instructions on how to do any of this. I know the basics of it is to copy the bios file and flash utility to a floppy along with a bootdisk that will run these things (sometimes the .bat file needs to be modified in order to do this automatically). So I've downloaded drdflash but it came as a .img and I don't think it can be 'just' copied to disk. I came across the 'dd' command but have also heard its nicknamed 'data destroyer' or words to that effect.

I have upgraded to 10.10 from 10.04, a a200 laptop, real old desktop (Pentium 4 with sdram), and did a complete install on a I5 with 4G of ram without any problems at all. However I could not find the "software source" option that was under Administration in 10.04 and earlier. I am in Australia and getting all of the updates from the main U.S. based server is a really slow. I used the optus server before and got much quicker updates. Is there a choose server option in 10.10 that I missed?

Aftrer use "Suspend to RAM" my system hang and show many error messages ("read error" or something like this), after restart BIOS can't find disk at all. I have latest version Kubuntu 64bit, (few days ago upgraded) and Segate SATA disk.

I was trying to install VPN client for my Ubuntu 9.10 64-bit. During the installation process the terminal reads:
"Directory containing linux kernel source code [/lib/modules/2.6.31-21-generic/build]"
On that I pressed enter for the default option (in bold). After a few more steps I reached the following error:
Making module
sh: Can't open ./driver_build.sh
Failed to make module "cisco_ipsec.ko".
[/lib/modules/2.6.31-21-generic/build] is the location where the installer expects the kernel source to be (I am guessing). So unless I correct the terminal (by providing the location of the kernel source), I think I will keep on getting the same error message.
So to get the kernel source I visited: [URL]From there I copy pasted the command:
sudo apt-get build-dep --no-install-recommends linux-image-$(uname -r)
apt-get source linux-image-$(uname -r)
Everything went fine, but even now I don't know if at all I have a kernel source and where it exists on my machine.

Code: Linux quad 2.6.33 #1 SMP Sun Mar 7 18:22:02 CET 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux I am using Trisquel GNU/Linux 3.0. I am asking my questions here, since this involves non-free drivers. I succesfully installed the nvidia driver on the default kernel. But the default kernel has removed all support for DVB USB sticks, so I had to compile my own kernel.
I got the newest version from kernel.org. Saved the archieve to /usr/src/. unzipped the file in the directory (so my kernel source is now in /usr/src/linux-2.6.33/.) Made a symlink with ln -s linux-2.6.33 linux. I compiled the kernel succesfully. Did a "make install" and "make modules_install" and ran "update-grub". Restarted system. Cd'ed to my source directory and ran "make headers_install" succesfully. Looking at my timestamps, it looks like the kernel headers has been installed to /usr/src/linux-2.6.33/usr/include/linux/. I downloaded the latest x86_64 drivers from nvidias website. Went to console 1 and closed up X. If I start the installer without any parameters (sh NVIDIA*.run) I get the following error:

Please make sure you have installed the kernel source files for your kernel and that they are properly configured; on Red Hat Linux systems, for example, be sure you have the 'kernel-source' or 'kernel-devel' RPM installed. If you know the correct kernel source files are installed, you may specify the kernel source path with the '--kernel-source-path' command line option. lib/modules/2.6.33/source is a symlink which point to /usr/src/linux-2.6.33
I get the same error if using --kernel-source-path=/usr/src/linux/, /usr/src/linux-2.6.33/ and similar options which link to this directory through symlinks. If I use --kernel-source-path=/usr/src/linux-2.6.33/usr/include, I get the following error:

OMG 10.04 is so cool! But where did GRUB's menu.lst disappear? OK, I found this thread, which explains that this a whole new game...I was somewhat overwhelmed by the new syntax so I decided to simply rely on the automatic search feature of GRUB2 as explained in "Adding Entries to Grub 2" in this Basics document.
So I did so, but it didn't find the other Ubuntu 8.04 bootable partitions on my drive. BTW, it seems that I have both 10_linux and 30_os-prober in /etc/grub.d:

Is there a way to find the dependencies from the source code in the directory produced by the tarball? All I do till now is ./configure, see the missing lib etc, install it, again ./configure, see missing lib, install it, and so on. Is there a way to have all the missing dependencies before configuring the program for the system, maybe with a proper configure flag? But ./configure -h
