I've bought an X10 Home Automation USB interface: the CM15.
This is the information lsusb gives:

But this tells me nothing about where the device file is! How can I find that, or create one myself?
I just compiled my first own kernel (I'm using Arch Linux), following the tutorial on the german site. Now I tried to boot it, I ended up failing with this message: Code: Waiting 10 seconds for device /dev/sda1 ... Root device '/dev/sda1' doesn't exist, Attempting to create it. ERROR: Unable to determine major/minor number of root device '/dev/sda1' Here is the important part of my menu.lst:

I simply copy&pasted the Arch-entry, i.e. I also had the disk by uuid there. The failure message was the same, just the root device name was the different name Also, at first I did not have the initrd line in my menu.lst (as written in my tutorial that I may not need it). In this case I had this error message:

The Completely Fair Queuing (cfq) scheduler in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5appears to have worse I/O read performance than in version 4. It appears as though the Completely Fair Queuing I/O scheduler (cfq) has a regression and thus exhibits reduced read-side throughput which can affect performance for both local and NFS mounted file systems.
One way to mitigate this is to set the cfq's slice_idle parameter to zero. To change this value, execute the following command echo 0 > slice_idle in the /sys/block directory appropriate for your situation, as shown below:
echo 0 > /sys/block/hda/queue/iosched/slice_idle
We are using NFS file systems in RHEL 5.3. I would like to know how to find which /dev/Device is being used by the NFS file systems, so that I could try setting the slice_idle to '0' to see if there is any difference in performance? In /etc/fstab I only see the actual NAS volumes for the NFS file systems.
Recently, I created a device sc0 through device mapper. The divice could be found in /dev/mapper/sc0. My problem is that the device doesn't exist in /dev/partitions which will block my following test.BTW, I found dm-0 in /dev/partitions. Is it the same as /dev/mapper/sc0? But the device /dev/dm-0 doesn't exist!
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to mount a custom device node for each usb port of my pc. For example: Every pen drive connected to my usb 1-1.2 will be called /dev/usb2 and mounted on /mnt/usb2, on usb 1-1.3 port the device node will be called /dev/usb3 and mounted on /mnt/usb3.
I'm using an embedded linux, the device handler is mdev. Editing mdev.rules I'm able to manage new devices and write special rules for them (on /bin/hotplug.sh I can mount the /dev/udisk device on anywhere I wanna):

I am developing for a Linux based device for which the HOT PLUG option is deactivated. As part of optimizing the code, we also don't want to create device files for unused devices. We understand that both USB attached and fixec SCSI hard disks would create device files like /dev/sda,/dev/sda1 /dev/sdb, /dev/sdb1 etc. Is this understanding correct?
In the case of USB attached SCSI devices, would driver create this device file entry? How is it created? Can somebody please tell me how it is being created automatically. In case I attach a fixed SCSI hard disk before boot up(and create device file /dev/sda1), would USB SCSI device driver create device files starting from /dev/sdb, automatically.
On my debian lenny OS I have an external usb hard disk I would like to automount it at boot. So I edited the /etc/fstab file in order to automount /dev/sdb1. It worked without problem. Then I recompiled the kernel and, as consequence, /dev/sdb1 changed to /dev/sdc1. I started playing with udev in order to match the now called /dev/sdc1 and to change its name in /dev/maxtor (being maxtor the brand of the hard disk). Obviously I edited also /etc/fstab: /dev/sdb1 is now /dev/maxtor.
The boot automount doesn't work anymore. On the boot sequence I can read the message "Mounting local filesystem...mount: special device /dev/maxtor does not exist FAILED". But when I log into the system I can run the command "mount /dev/maxtor /mnt/maxtor" and it works! So, IMHO, my udev rule is correct otherwise also the manual mount wouldn't work, right? I have to tell to udev to create /dev/maxtor BEFORE the boot automount process.
I tried to delete my udev rule and to edit /etc/fstab changing /dev/maxtor in /dev/sdc1 (the name udev gave to my hard disk after kernel recompile, before was /dev/sdb1) and it didn't work: on boot process I always see the "Mounting local filesystem...mount: special device /dev/sdc1 does not exist Failed". Then I tried to change /dev/sdc1 in /dev/sdb1 in /etc/fstab and to reboot with the old original kernel and int this way it works. With my compiled kernel, the OS seems to have lost the capacity to detect my device node correctly.
I have a printer that is not getting a device node assigned at boot.The printer is attached with a USB to Parallel (IEEE-1284) adapter cable.When I plug in the usb cable when the machine is running, the printer is assigned the device node: /dev/usb/lp0
I am guessing that during startup, the printer device is not detected since it is plugged in over an adapter cable which may be considered a device in itself?This is for a retail store, and we rely on the printer to pop the cash drawer open, so it kinda has to work without a "secret handshake".Unfortunately our workstations do not have Parallel ports. I would be happy to share terminal output, udev info, I'll write you a poem but I could sure use a helping hand- I'm stumped!
This device doesn't automount, doesn't show in KDE 4's device notifier, and I can't mount this camera manually because it doesn't appear to get assigned to a device node. Any known solutions? It worked in Slackware 12.2, but not in 13.0 or 13.1.

I'm trying to format a Cruzer USB flash drive, and when I plug it in, the icon for the mounted filesystem appears on my desktop. However, when I open GParted, it doesn't list the filesystem as an option to partition.
The recommendations I've found through Google include monitoring tail -f /var/log/messages, which they claim should list the device name when the drive is mounted, but this never happens for me. I've also read that the USB drive would usually be linked to /dev/sdb, but this appears as a broken link on my filesystem. How else would I find the device?

the message on the title only happens with Ubuntu. In Fedora, it just stops booting from LiveCD with "WARNING: Cannot find root file system!". The rest of the symptoms are the same.I'm trying to install Fedora LiveCD on an IBM i Series notebook (model 1161-21X). It's a Celeron powered unit with RAM expanded to 512MB. It has a 10GB HDD, and an internal CD-ROM drive. Although it has two USB ports (1.1), it cannot boot from a USB drive, so no pendrive nor external CD unit solution possible.When I boot from LiveCD, it stops booting with the message above. Looking atsg, there's no CD-ROM driver loaded. Also, there's a char device for sg0, but no block device for it, so no way to mount it. It seems that the driver module has been removed from the kernel. I'm currently running Fedora Core 5 in it. This very same problem happens with any Ubuntu newer that 6 or any Fedora post 7.

I am working on an embedded system, which is an USB MSC device that supports some vendor specific scsi commands. I am using FC10 laptop as USB host for testing, and it runs some small apps based on sg3. All has been well for ~ a week. The FC10 laptop is able to communicate with the device and retrieve data. Suddenly, starting from today, the laptop is not able to properly detect the device. When plugged-in, the MSC device is detected as input device (I thought). This is observed from "dmesg" output and changes in "/dev/input/".The device under development is running at full speed. When I connect to winXP, no problem. A windows file explorer pops up, showing the content of the drive.Also, the FC10 has no problem with other USB flash drive (high speed).

For those that use Virtualbox on their slackware host and have a windows (xp) guest running. I have tried various settings for sound (Alsa, PulseAudio), the AC97 drivers are installed in the Windows xp guest os, but there is no sound and there is an unknown audio device (in the windows device manager). If I remove the AC97 drivers and use the soundblaster16 drivers in the Vbox settings there is no unknown sound device, but there's still no sound. why I can't get sound working?

Since May 12,2009. Our system lifekeeper has the error log "lifekeeper error: DEVICE FAILURE on SCSI device '/dev/add'", but it ran normally. Until last week, it failover to the standby server. The disk still running, the error still come out.
