View 3 RepliesI installed Ubuntu using Wubi alongside Windows 7. There were some updates that screwed things up because I didn't lock some packages and Grub or something get deleted. Anyway that got screwed up so I went into Windows and ran Wubi again. It went fine, someone told me to lock certain packages, so updates what cause issues again.
The problem is when I turn on my computer I have the choices of Windows 7, Ubuntu, Ubuntu. The first Ubuntu that got screwed app still apears there and I believe is still using the 18 gigabytes I allowed.I really like Ubuntu and I would like to install it for real with a my Flash Drive.I understand the instructions but did not do it yet because I don't know how to remove all these previous installations. I have a Wubi installation, and the upgrade to 10.04 froze. I didn't note down the point at which it froze.
When I tried to reboot, I got the grub screen, and when selecting Ubuntu I get lots of text messages scrolling by, but it freezes at battery check.
The machine boots fine into Vista.
Rather than spend a lot of time trying to figure out what went wrong in the upgrade, my inclination is to delete the Wubi installation from within Windows, and then do a fresh install of 10.04 under Wubi. Is this feasible/sensible?
There are a handful of files I would like to salvage from the prior installation, however. Could I do that with a Live CD since the prior installation was under Wubi?
I have Slackware 12.0 in my desktop pc. How can I remove all portable computer software from it?

But after that, it won't check the RAID anymore. (the server isn't on 24/7, normally a few hours a day)I've read a post for manually initiating consistency check with these commands

View 9 Replies View RelatedI am having some problems uninstalling wubi. Its not in the uninstall programs or coming up and a boot option when i boot my computer anymore. So i went out and downloaded the newest version, and tried to install it. Cause i thought that it had been removed maybe by anti-virus or something. When i clicked on it to install it said i had a previous version that i had to uninstall. So i clicked OK. It started to uninstall and then i got an error message. I tried it again and got the some error message.

I have Ubuntu 9.10 installed on my HP desktop, but I'm running an older version (8.10) on a live CD so I can at least get online to ask for some When I tried to log on earlier it went to a command prompt and said the 'file system check failed' and to run fsck manually. I entered 'sudo fsck' at the prompt and I selected "y" to fix all the bad inodes, when it was complete it told me to restart, I then entered 'sudo restart' at the prompt and it said 'sudo uuid unknown'. I have not installed anything recently and I'm not sure what to do.

I'm so used to Windows having to run multiple malware scans with multiple tools. Running registry cleaners and running CCleaner to remove all of the old temp files, cookies etc.. Derfagging. Ok with Ubuntu no more malware scans. No more registry scans. It appears that there isn't a defrag tool? And what about the other things that tend to clog up the works, Temp files , cookies etc. Is that what the disc janitor is all about?
View 6 Replies View RelatedTrying to figure out GIMP plugins. My version of GIMP (2.6.6) shows Despeckle as grayed out. Going online, Despeckle does not appear in the GIMP Plug-In Registry. I'm on dial-up at home, which of course makes everything infinitely harder. Plus I'm not very familiar with GIMP plugins. Anyone know what's going on with Despeckle? I'm picking up a couple of old SCSI Nikon Coolscans and would like to see how hard it's going to be to run them with Ubuntu. Can use Windows for the scanning work but it'd be fun to use Ubuntu.
View 2 Replies View RelatedIt's been weeks since I've logged into Windows but to test a eth0 card issue I now want to see if it works in Win7 and lo and behold, I can't for the life of me remember my Windoze password.I see lots of references to using specially created iso files to gain access to edit the registry, but I am wondering if anyone knows the commands I would need (from the command prompt of my F13 install dvd, rescue mode) to access the registry and what section I would need to change.I am guessing that I can do this from the command line without needing to download a special iso that (for all I know) could have any number of malware on it.I know this is not exactly the place to ask for a Windows registry edit walkthrough, but I figure some of you out there might have done this yourselves.

I am comparing jwhois and whois. Specifically, I want to resolve the country and Internet registry source for 150.216.2.252. The correct information is United States and ARIN; however, using the whois command it says it is in Australia and APINC. This is incorrect. I have compiled jwhois; however, it will not work on ip address. It will resolve cnn.com and other websites; however, will not work on ip address such as 150.216.2.252. When I try to use an IP address it says:

How can I get jwhois to work on this ip address or whois to resolve the correct United States information?
I love how in Linux you can link to folders. get Windows XP to change where My Videos, My Music and My Pictures folders are pointing to, to make them act like Linux symlinks?Is there some way to get the same functionality in Windows XP, maybe by editing the Registry.

If I were to have a situation where I had installed the driver for a printer but when I went into printing on the control panel to "add" the printer the driver didn't show up - could I or should I consider manually editing some configuration file to get the printer recognized/ installed on the machine? If that were a good solution, how would I do it? What file would I look for? What would I edit in it? I know that first sentence is probably hard to read but I don't know how else to say it.
View 1 Replies View Relatedi just tried to install Ubuntu 11.04 (x86) on my Dell Inspiron 1520 Laptop (with a Nvidia 8600M GT graphics card) with Wubi. A normal installation try resulted in an unreadable screen after boot (see attachment). I then managed to get the installation going by modifiing the boot options like shown in this HowTo: [URL] After the installation Wubi automatically rebooted the system without any prompt, so that i couldn't install the proper Nvidia drivers (is there a way to prevent wubi from doing that?) like described in the HowTo. After the reboot the graphics were messed up again.
Boot parameters like "text" "single" or vga=xxx didn't work, adding nomodest and nouveau.modset again didn't help either (I think "text" acutally brings up the console, but i just see an unreadable "blacker" screen than normal). Is there an boot option for grub to disable all nvidia related drivers and the graphical login manager and just show a text based console? Or force the gfx driver to be the same as in the installation process (which was perfect...native resolution, no graphical errors until the reboot) (i tried xforcevesa without any luck; nosplash and removing quiet/splash does work - the bootup process is readable, but as soon as the login manager starts its messed up again)
I installed Ubuntu using wubi, But I didnt assign much space, probably like 17 gigs or something. My geting a pop up everytime my ubuntu starts up saying i got low disk space, very low disk space, Im runing ubuntu 10.10. How do I add more disk space? How do i make the partition bigger.
