Ubuntu Installation :: 10.04 Wubi Upgrade Failed / Freezes At Battery Check?

May 6, 2010

I have a Wubi installation, and the upgrade to 10.04 froze. I didn't note down the point at which it froze.

When I tried to reboot, I got the grub screen, and when selecting Ubuntu I get lots of text messages scrolling by, but it freezes at battery check.

The machine boots fine into Vista.

Rather than spend a lot of time trying to figure out what went wrong in the upgrade, my inclination is to delete the Wubi installation from within Windows, and then do a fresh install of 10.04 under Wubi. Is this feasible/sensible?

There are a handful of files I would like to salvage from the prior installation, however. Could I do that with a Live CD since the prior installation was under Wubi?

Ubuntu Installation :: System Boot Hangs At Battery Check After Upgrade?

Apr 28, 2011

I've just upgraded to Natty. During the upgrade no errors showed. However, when I now boot ubuntu (either recovery mode or normal), the boot process hangs at:

'checking battery state'

I searched for similair problems in this forum, but the solutions in other posts(sudo apt-get update & upgrade etc.) did not help. I'm not sure if it is related or important, but when it hangs, it also shows something like:

'starting automatic crash reporter [fail]'
'not starting jetty'
'saned disabled'

(I can't copy there of course, so it is probably not exactly like this, or in this order...) What can I do to get my ubuntu boot again?

Fedora Installation :: Upgrade RH9 To F10 - Install Fails - Installer Fails Media Check Due To "errors"

I am trying to upgrade RH9 to F10. I have downloaded dvd iso image i386. The SHA1 integrity check passes. The installer fails media check due to "errors". I did an independent verification of the DVD and zero errors found. Download was from Fedora's own torrent, so files should be verified anyway. If I bypass the media check I get the message : Running anaconda 11.4.1.62 the Fedora system installer - please wait.....

Ubuntu :: How Do I Check Battery Power

Dec 17, 2010

I have a starling netbook, but I have the regular ubuntu interface on it. I normally have it plugged into a power source, but now it is unplugged. As I remember, at one time there was an icon on the top bar that showed you how much battery life you have left, but now I don't see it. How do I get info on the percent of power I have left?

Ubuntu Installation :: Install Menu Fails To Appear?

Jan 9, 2011

I'm trying to install ubuntu from a disc that I downloaded and burned. I'm currently using windows vista, which recently got a virus and had to be reinstalled, so I decided to try ubuntu instead. My problem is that when I reboot my computer with the disc in the drive, it appears to be starting to boot, but instead of a menu, a purple screen with a picture at the bottom appears. I'm not very good with computers, but a couple of years ago I tried booting an older version of ubuntu to test it, and that worked just fine.Edit: I'm trying to install ubuntu 10.10, and I'm currently downloading ubuntu again to burn onto another CD, in case the CD is the problem.

Debian Configuration :: Check Battery Levels Command Line?

Feb 12, 2011

since I am on a Dell inspiron 1545 laptop, being able to display my battery charge is critical. After some extensive googling, I found I need a command 'acpi', which does not exist on my computer. I cannot seem to find it in the packages database; the closest thing being 'acpi-support' apt-get install also can't find it.

I tried cat /proc/acpi/battery/BAT0/state, but that only shows me if the battery is discharging or charging and doesn't give me an actual percentage.

Debian :: Allowing Disk Check To Proceed When Running On Battery Power

Feb 12, 2011

Is there any way to allow normal fsck boot-time checks when running on battery power? After looking around, the only solution I've seen is to manually alter the /etc/init.d/checkfs.sh and /etc/init.d/checkroot.sh files and remove the AC power check. There must be a better way than that surely?

Debian Installation :: User Login Fails / Root Ok

May 26, 2015

Debian 8/Cinnamon fresh install. /home is being shared with two other OS's, Mint and openSUSE. At the login screen I enter my user name and password and the screen blacks for 1-2 seconds and comes back asking for user name and password. I can login as root. As root I can launch the Group & Users GUI and attempt to set the user's password, and pressing the 'change' button does nothing obvious.

I can set the user's password in a terminal, which reports success. I tried to switch users and login with the changed password and I get the same failure. If I try to login with the original password I get an incorrect password error, suggesting that the password is being processed properly and the problem is elsewhere.

On previous installs with Mate and the default desktop (Gnome) I didn't have this problem. So, the questions are: Is it Cinnamon? Is it an unlucky chance bad install? Config files are typically in /home, which is being shared with Mate and KDE, is this the problem?

Ubuntu Installation :: Boot Fails: Can't Find Root Device + Drop To Shell

Dec 27, 2010

From one day to the other my system stopped booting properly. Since I (finally) fixed it, I wanted to share my solution. It runs on a fakeraid pair of SSD's of 60 GB each (actually a single Revodrive device, but it shows up as two devices). When Ubuntu 10.10 boots, I'm dropped to a shell.During boot, when I removed "silent splash" from the kernel's command line, I got these messages:

Code:

[ 4.960240] scsi 6:0:0:0: Direct-Access ATA OCZ-REVODRIVE 1.20 PQ: 0 ANSI: 5
[ 4.960425] sd 6:0:0:0: [sdg] 117231408 512-byte logical blocks: (60.0 GB/55.8 GiB)

[cod]....

I doubt that this is what was needed (as I had that already when it didn't work, but I might be required in addition to installing dmraid)

# update-initramfs -a

After installing this, the problem was solved!! This is strange since I don't recall uninstalling this package or changing anything important, for that matter (perhaps did apt-get upgrade, but that's about it!). [URL]

OpenSUSE Install :: OS 11.2 Installation Fails While Copying Root Filesystem

Jan 27, 2010

Have been running 11.1 on a generic notebook (eRacks) just fine until a few days ago when CUPS couldn't be reached. Rather than futz more with 11.1, I decided to install 11.2 (which has been on my desktop). Using the same CD, which continues to check ok, the install has failed many times at about the same point: 87% through "copying root filesystem" in yast2.
Specs: Intel P4 2.4 GHz, 1.5 GB RAM, ATI radeon PV250Lf

The HD was partitioned into /, swap, /home, and an extended partition of /opt, /var, /usr. Only / was ext4 and the rest were ext3. Tried various options:
* no apic
* no acpi
* "noapic acpi=off" entered manually
* Vesa instead of 1024x768

Each time had to edit partition table to mount the extended partitions. Always formatted /. At first didn't format the extended patitions, later formated all but /home. Then set yast2 to format / as ext3, to match the other partitions. In the sysinfo page the / partition is now shown as /mnt containing 723.6 MB out of 7 GB, still formatted as ext4. On rescan by yast2 partition manager, / shows as ext3. The install halts every time with an error while "copying root filesystem." Tried booting from the CD direct to install and to the Live OS followed by install--same result. So, hours later, went back to 11.1--which installed in minutes.

Ubuntu Installation :: "No Root File System Is Defined - Correct This From The Partitioning Menu"

Dec 23, 2010

I have installed ubuntu onto a 64 bit Windows 7 machine using Wubi. [Note: I thought that I was downloading 10.10, but the installer said it was 10.04] When Wubi gave be a choice of which drive to install on, I choose my second drive (B) My Windows 7 resides on (C)

The install seemed to take a long time, but I think that was because it was downloading the whole operating system install files. When it was finished downloading it asked me if I wanted to reboot, I selected yes (reboot). Then the boot screen gave me the choice: Windows or Ubuntu. I choose Ubuntu and then I get the error:

"No root File system is defined. correct this from the partitioning menu."

Damn that Ubuntu splash screen was so beautiful and I thought I was home free. I have read a few threads here and other places on line. I have read that I may have to partition the drive. Was my mistake in choosing the B: instead of the C: drive? If I partition can I partition from inside windows using the computer management software it provides? Do I need to partition at all? Or can I just move the installed files to the C: Are the files movable? In the ubuntu directory I see a file: uninstall-wubi.exe. Should I use this and try a reinstall onto the C:
