Ubuntu Installation :: Non Executable Memory Error When Enter /usr/bin/check-bios?

Apr 1, 2011

I have decided to load the OS on a old HP Compaq DX2000 MT to see if its for me before putting it on my main machine.

I loaded Ubuntu version 10.10 last night everything was fine except I could not get my wireless adapter to work, I decided to connect via ethernet to get the latest updates and drivers.

After the updates and restart I now get the non executable memory error. when I enter
/usr/bin/check-bios-nx --verbose

I am told I have NX capabilities and should go to the bios and enable it. There is nothing in
the bios to enable as far as I can see. So I enter the command

sudo rm /etc/update-motd.d/20-cpu-checker

OpenSUSE Install :: Error ""Creating Device Modes With Udev 2.0436224] [drm: I915_diver_load]*ERROR*Detected Broken BIOS With 262140/2644kb Of Video Memory Stolen"

Aug 18, 2010

I tried to install OpenSuse 11.3 on my brand new pc, which already had Windows 7 proffessional in it, and I went step by step through the installation without changing anything. It didn't work. I tried for a second time and this error message kept popping up: "Creating device modes with udev 2.0436224] [drm: i915_diver_load]*ERROR*Detected broken BIOS with 262140/2644kb of video memory stolen. 2.0436224] [drm: i915_diver_load]*ERROR*Disabling GEM(try reducing stolen memory or updating the BIOS to fix)"

And then a lot of letters and numbers wich make no sense to me. Now the only way I can initiate OpenSuse is with the OSuse boot dvd and on failsafe mode.

Ubuntu :: Botloader W/o Enter Key Or Remap Keyboard In Bios?

Oct 16, 2010

So, for some reason the right side ENTER, period, semi colon, SHIFT, and UP, Down, Left arrow keys have all stopped working on my laptop. I just set up a dual boot with windows xp, and ubuntu.

I checked under the keys, and cleaned them, and no problem. This wouldn't be that bad of a sutuation, I could just re-map the keys. However, when my computer starts, and I enter Bios > Bootloader, I get stuck.

I can use home/end to move up and down, but no way to select which OS I want. I have to plug in a USB keyboard to get into my OS. I don't want to be carrying around a keyboard, otherwise I wouldn't have a laptop.

So, I either need a different bootloader which can use some other keys, or I need a way to remap the enter key all the way back at the bios, so I can trick it and enter my OS,

Edit: Actually, I'll probably need a new keyboard. Ubuntu is pretty good with battery life, so I could boot into ubuntu, then hibernate. So, I need a good key mapper for Ubuntu

General :: File - Extract Executable / Script From Memory In (Ubuntu)

May 11, 2011

when I delete a running executable or script, it usually (for me, pretty much always, but I don't know if it will work in every case) continues to run without any problems. So I've got two questions here: Where is the running executable/script being run from? RAM memory? If stored in RAM or where ever, is there a way to extract the executable/script from that location? If it makes any difference, I'm using Ubuntu 11.04.

Hardware :: Wrong RAM Memory Information At BIOS

Nov 4, 2010

I have 4GB RAM installed on my PC (ASUS P7H55M-BR, Intel i3 530 2,93Ghz). Onboard video has 32 MB (BIOS config).

It should be this way (or maybe not?):Each slot has 1GB of RAM memory: 4 x 1024 MB = 4096 MB.

Now, subtracting the video memory: 4096 MB - 32 MB = 4064 MB.

It's working on Dual Channel.

But when I am booting the system, the BIOS shows only 3920 MB (3,9GB). Linux shows even lower: 3881 MB.

Memory Remap Feature is enabled at the BIOS config.

Debian Installation :: Phoenix BIOS Version : V1.3201 Disconcerting - Error 21

Jan 20, 2011

My external USB drive came formatted NTFS. It had a list of compatible OSs on the back of the box.Debian was not listed. I reformatted it during installation never planning to use it for NT. My BIOS just happens to be Phoenix. I have everything up and running fine. I just have to remember not to forget the startup sequence in order to avoid a permanent non-transitory Grub Stage1.5 Error 21. I don't want others to have to clean Grub or start over if it's unnecessary and there is a work around as simple as a startup sequence. Nor am I pointing the finger at Phoenix.

My external USB drive has its own separate DC power supply apparently needing more power than a thumb drive or what it could pull from a USB port. Here's a picture:

Installation :: Error 18: Selected Cylinder Exceeds Maximum Supported By BIOS

Mar 29, 2009

I just downloaded the Fedora 10 cd yesterday and decided to install it. I had a partition for Fedora on my system before but I'm not really sure what I did to it. It wasn't booting and it has been so long since I messed with it I just decided to reinstall with the latest (I think I was running F9 previously). So I pop in the live CD, run the install, and then reboot into Ubuntu. I modified my menu.lst to include the new vmlinuz and initrd versions, as well as the new UUID of the partition. Now when I reboot and choose Fedora from grub's menu I get this error:

Quote:

Error 18: Selected cylinder exceeds maximum supported by BIOS

I found this wiki which does a pretty good job describing the problem:

[URL]

However, I'm still unable to get this to work. According to many different sites out there this problem shouldn't exist on newer computers. Well, I just recently put a new motherboard into this box -- it's this one:

[URL]

According to their BIOS page the first release of this was late November 2008. Yes they have had 2 updates since then but it looks like those only serve to support AM3 CPUs (which I don't have) or update some audio playback issues. I seriously doubt I need to update my BIOS to get this to work.

Here's my fdisk:

Code:

$ sudo fdisk -l
Disk /dev/sda: 400.0 GB, 400088457216 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 48641 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

[code]....

I can get Slackware 12.1 to boot (though it kernel panics during startup...not sure what I did to make it angry), but grub immediately fails when I attempt to boot Fedora. Here's the entry from menu.lst:

Quote:

titleFedora 10 (on /dev/sdb1)
root(hd1,0)
kernel/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.27.5-117.fc10.i686 ro root=UUID=178bc9f9-76ba-48aa-a588-de978cc1eee1 rhgb quiet

[code]...

I have verified that the vmlinuz and initrd are both correct. I put the UUID in there after running vol_id so I'm sure the entry is solid. I have tried making it "root=/dev/sdb1" which failed with the same error, and I even tried copying the fc10 vmlinuz and initrd files over to my Ubuntu partition (which controls grub) but for some odd reason the cp command takes a really long time and then I eventually get this weird error for initrd:

Quote:

$ sudo cp /media/sdb1/boot/initrd-2.6.27.5-117.fc10.i686.img .
cp: reading `/media/sdb1/boot/initrd-2.6.27.5-117.fc10.i686.img': Input/output error

I got the same error with the dd command too. So I was going to just try and copy the files to my sdb3 partition and then modify the menu.lst entry appropriately but that doesn't seem to be plausible at this point.

I have a motherboard that was just released about 4 months ago, an Athlon X2 6000+ CPU, and 4gigs of RAM. The drives are both SATA 300 drives...it's not like this is some old Pentium Pro and the BIOS just doesn't support large drives...this is a brand new system with a very recent BIOS version.

I have successfully quadruple booted all of these in the past, but that may have been prior to the new motherboard. So that makes me think it could be something related to the motherboard but the thing is so much newer than what I previously had, certainly that can't be the problem...can it? Then I remember that Slackware boots, so if it's truly something about how the BIOS can't access some file beyond a particular section of the disk, then it doesn't make any sense that it can book slackware. Fedora is the first partition, Slackware is the last and is like 200+ GB into the disk.

Ubuntu Installation :: Live CD Out Of Memory Error

Nov 13, 2010

Today, I burned a copy of Lubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat and tried installing it on my old 2.4Ghz Celeron 192MB RAM (actually 256MB with 64MB dedicated by the BIOS for the internal video card) laptop, which installed Lubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx with absolutely no problems. However, when I tried inserting the disk for Maverick this time around, the live CD boot always hangs during Plymouth, and pressing Esc shows:

Code:
Generating locales. en_US.UTF-8.I modified the boot options and removed splash and quiet, and I got a whole lot of messages that seemed like errors, but I think the root of the problem was this:

Code:
Out of memory: kill process 620 (localedef) source 929 or a child Killed process 620 (localedef) VS2: 59500kB, anon-rss: 57596kB, file-rss: 820kB After that, it got a few messages about localedef timing out for 120 seconds or something. Now I'm no idiot, I'm well aware that my laptop is cutting it very close to the minimum RAM requirements of the live CD, but it's just the live CD that stops me from running Lubuntu, because once it's installed, I have no problems. I ran Lubuntu 10.04's Live CD with no problems and the installed LXDE system ran amazingly fast. I'm sure if I could just install Lubuntu 10.10, it would run at the same speed. The problem is that the Lubuntu wiki still writes the minimum system requirements of:
