I have been working in my spare time over the last few days, Had problems with the whole grub2 not installing on RAID 1. Then I found out that I had to have a separate non raid Ext4 partition on one drive with "/Boot" as mount point and install went though fine.
My question is, will the developers FIX this. I mean if I only have 2 x 2tb drives in teh pc as RAID 1, and the one fails with the boot partition the whole machine goes down. Kinda defeats the whole RAID feature huh.
I USED to run a windows network with RAID 5 servers, and windows never had a problem installing everything on the RAID. Or even setting up RAID 1 in the bios on the PC and installing XP or NT4 on the RAID 1. There was never a need for a separate non raid boot partition.
Do we need a separate RAID friendly/enabled Grub? I guess for now I will get a 250gb drive and install the Server OS to it, and setup RAID1 manually after the server OS boots. Then will make a ghost type image of the server in case that drive fails so I can quickly install a new drive and restore the image and get it back up and running again.
I wanted to implement raid5 such that one partition is from my laptop's hard disk and others from other hard disks. After making one partition a raid partition, I rebooted the system. The computer stopped mid-way during booting, and brought me to the shell. On typing fsck -p, it told me an unexpected error occured in the partition which I had made for raid. Is there some condition that we cannot boot from a disk containing one of the raid partitions ?

I have a total of 3 HDDs on this system:
-- 2x 500GB WDD HDDs (non-advanced format) ... RAID-0 setup
-- 1x 320GB WDD HDD (non RAID setup)
(The non RAID HDD is intended to be a SWAP drive for both XP and Ubuntu = 2 partitions)
I plan on making multiple partitions... and reserve partition space for Ubuntu (of course).
I have the latest version of the LiveCD created already.
Q4) Do I need the Alternate CD for this setup?

I am using Ubuntu 10.04 x64. I am not trying to install Ubuntu on a RAID 1 drive like all of the guides are for. I have a RAID 1 array that I am using for data storage. In windows it shows as a single array just fine. In linux it shows as 2 separate drives. I don't care how they show up to be honest I just have to data written to one drive written to the other automatically as well so my RAID isn't screwed up. Looking through different articles and forums I find a lot of stuff saying that it should show up under /dev/mapper/dxxx or something under /dev/mapper. All that shows up there for me is a device called control which doesn't seem to do something.

I had just configure RAID 1 on my IBM X3400 Server ..Partition information is md0 boot , md1 swap and md2 is root ....but after resyn when i run cat /proc/mdstat I realize that md0 and md1 is ok and present with [UU] status. BUT the md2 is showing on one [U_].. that means my root partition is not properly in RAID 1..
Please suggest how can i make it active in both drive. Or i need to reinstall complete system again. Screen shot attached

I am running the install on an old Dell 8400. My PC has an Intel RAID Controller built into the MB. I have 1 HDD (without RAID) (which is houses my OS install) and then I have 2 1TB drives (These are just NTFS formatted drives with binary files on them nothing more.) in a RAID 1 (Mirroring) Array. The Intel RAID Controller on Boot recognizes the Array as it always has (irrespective of which OS is installed) however, unlike Windows 7 (where I was able to install the Intel RAID controller driver) .Does anyone know of a resolution (which doesn't involve formatting and / or use of some other software RAID solution) - to get this working which my searches have not taken me too?
In my system i have 3 250 GB Hard drives in a RAID 5 configuration. unfortunately, i cannot see this volume in "Computer", so i am unable to access any of the files on the volume. wierd thing is that when i enter disk utility, it finds the drives, and recognises them as a RAID volume. any ideas on how i can access the files on this drive

I realize this is a common problem, but I have noticed people having success.
I have a M4A87TD EVO MB with two Seagate drives in Raid 0. (The raid controller is a SB850 on that MB) I use the raid utility to create the raid drive that Windows7x64 uses. I have 2 partitions and 1 unused space. Partition 1 is Windows, partition 2 is for media, and the remaining unused space is for Ubuntu.
I am running ubuntu-10.10-desktop-amd64 off a Cruzer 16GB flash drive that was installed via Universal-USB-Installer-1.8.1.4.
My problem like so many others is that when I load into Ubuntu, gparted detects two separate hard drives instead of the raid. I read that this is because kpartx is not installed on 10.10. I then went in LiveCD mode and downloaded kpartx from Synaptic Manager. Gparted still reported two drives. I opened terminal and run a few commands with kpartx. I received an error. (Forgive me I didn't write it down, but I believe it said something about a communication error. I will try again later and see.)
Currently I am reflashing the Cruzer with a persistence of 4GB. I am not familiar with this process, but I understand that my LiveCD boot will save information I download to it. I decided to try this method because I was going to install kpartx and reboot to see if this made a difference.
I am looking for any suggestions on a different method or perhaps someone to tell me that the raid controller or some hardware isn't supported. I did install ubuntu-10.10-alternate-amd64 on my flash drive, but fail to get past detecting my CD-ROM drive since it's not plugged in. If this method is viable, I will plug it in. I also watched the ..... video were a guy creates Raid 0 with the alternated CD, but it wasn't a dual boot and didn't use a raid controller from a MB.
I just expanded my raid 5 array from 3*2TB to 4*2TB and mdadm made the grow successfully and shows an md0 dev with the size of 6TB usable data. Now my problem is that Debian (Lenny) dosnīt show the right amount. See below

I recently installed Fedora 12 for use with Amahi HDA. Before installing on the Hard drive I used the LIVE CD to test it out. While using the LIVE CD I could see all my HDD's. My file system, my 2nd Hard Drive, and my Raid 0 Configuration. (2 250GB drives) and could browse all my files on those drives.
After installing the full version on my hard drive, my RAID drives are showing up as seperate drives. I have a Asus P4P800 board using hte SATA raid. I know its FAKERaid and not a true hardware raid.
My goal is to restore the Raid in Fedora and make those drives active. However, i dont want to lose any of the data on those drives. To make sure I wasn't an idiot, i rebooted withthe LIVE CD again and verified that I could see the Raid Array.
I have been trying to upgrade my server to Ubuntu 10.04 since it has come out, but I hit a roadblock with my hardware RAID I have two JBODs that work perfectly in Ubuntu 9.10 x64 - but show as seperate, unformatted partitions (one per hdd) in Ubuntu 10.04 x64. I've been running Debian for a while, and now have the chance to do some enterprise-level experimentation. I stumbled across a very cheap EMC Clariion CX300 fibre RAID unit on eBay with 10 disks (Ģ90!), so I snapped it up with a fibre HBA. It's not a SAN, technically a DAS in its current configuration. I'd like to know how hard it is to set up one of these as an actual disk device in Debian.I tried installing the HBA (an Agilent Tachyon XL2 PCI-X card, 32 and 64-bit modes) in my current 'live' server (a Celeron 1.2GHz-based machine), but while Debian detected it as a FC controller card, mapping the LUNs within Navisphere on the CX to the host caused nothing (obvious) to show up in the OS. From what I've read about setting up SANs (not DASs, there seems to be precious little info on setting up these), there's firmware involved with the card, and there are no references to getting a Tachyon running under Linux.
I also snagged a good deal on a PowerEdge 1850 server, but as it's the PCI-Express version, the Tachyon won't fit, so I'm considering buying a PCI-E HBA. I found a QLogic QLE2460 for a good price, but I'm hesitant to buy it, in case I still can't get Debian to see the disks. I'd most like to have the device connected to the PowerEdge instead of the Celeron machine. Have I missed a step in the configuration, or is there anything I can do to test if the system is working as it should be? The units we use at work are much simpler: set the RAIDs up, map the host LUNs and the disk shows up in Windows. I'm also sure I've set everything up correctly on the CX, as the same LUN is available to Windows. It's been a real battle, but I am getting close.I won't go into all the details of the fight that I have had, but I've almost made it to the finish line. Here is the set up. ASUS Z8PE-D18 mother board 2 CPU, 8 Gig Ram. I recently added an OCZ Agility SSD, defined a raid 1 virtual disk on the 1 terabyte WD HDD drives, which will holds all of my user data, the SSD is for executables.The bios is set to AHCI. Windows 7 installed fine, recognizes the raid VD just fine.
I installed Ubuntu 10.04 by first booting into try and mode, then opening a terminal and issuing a "sudo dmraid -ay" command. Then performing the install. I told it to install the raid components, and told it to let me specify the partitions manually. When setting up the partitions, I told it to use the free space I set aside on the SSD from the Windows 7 install as ext4 and to mount root there. Ubuntu installed just fine, grub2 comes up just fine, and Windows 7 boots with out a hitch, recognizing the mirrored partition as I indicated previously. When I tell grub to boot linux however, it pauses and I get the "no block devices found" message. It will then boot, but it does not recognize the raid array. After Ubuntu starts up I can run "dmraid -ay" and it recognizes the raid array, but shows the two component disks of the raid array as well. It will not allow the component disks to be mounted, but they show up which is annoying. (I can live with that if I have to)
I have fixed a similar problem before by setting up a dmraid script in /etc/initramfs-tools/scripts/local-top ... following the instructions found at the bottom of this blog:[URL].. To recap: My problem is that after grub2 fires up Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS (Lucid Lynx), it pauses, and I get "no block devices found" It then boots but does not recognize the raid array untill I manually run "dmraid -ay". I've hunted around for what to do but I have not found anything. It may be some timing issue or something, but I am so tired of beating my head against this wall.
During cleanup operation .Xauthority file for the user was deleted.
After which the df -h is showing as:

I have a Hp G-56-122US Laptop and I am attempting to install fedora 14 on one of the partitions.I have 3 partitions (100Gb,160 and 40) and I intend installing fedora on the 40gb partition but the problem is when I use Live USB and try to install fedora it shows the 40gb and 100 together as one partition. but in windows 7 it shows up as 2 different partition.what do I do?edit:and there is one more thing it shows the Bios partitions as well.. an 8mb and a 200mb which has folders named hp bios..

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have implemented level 5 software raid (of 4 partitions on a SINGLE external hard disk). Implementing it on a single hard disk doesn't serve much purpose, I understand, but I did it for demonstration purpose only. The problem is when I read from the raid device into my laptop's hard disk, the time taken to transfer a 900 MB file is about 4 minutes (4 GB RAM) whereas the rime taken to transfer it from a pen drive is 43 seconds. Isn't raid supposed to work faster. However, the write to the raid device is faster than to a pendrive. Shouldn't it be taking data in parallel from the 3 partitions (as even a single disk has multiple heads) ?

So far I have been automatically mounting this partition in /media by editing fstab. The partition shows up in Places and on Desktop. Now I have changed mount-point to be in /mnt and this works fine, the partition mounts. The problem is that it doesn't show up in Places nor on the Desktop. I have changed back the mount-point to /media and the partition shows up on the Desktop and in Places fine, but when the mount-point is changed it won't show up anymore.

I've just installed 10.10 yesterday and since then it's been an uphill struggle These forums has helped me out quite a bit already so I hope you can continue doing it with this problem I have.I got a single drive where the bootpartition is ext4 and the other "storage" partition is a remenant from a windows 7 installation I had, with NTFS. Decided I wanted to give Ubuntu a try! Now i've run into permission trouble though, mainly because I wanted to set up an FTP server (oh what a struggle THAT's been, I have some stories... ). I've done a "mount --bind" so that I can reach different resources directly from my chroot. It turns out though that the mounted partition isn't giving anyone except the owner (me) permission to see the resources. FTPing into the server gives the mount points but gives a 550 error and can't list anything inside of them.It works perfectly for me just running it at the prompt or using the mount points directly in the Ubuntu GUI though (since I'm the owner/admin/whatever).
My intended solution that I've found was that people with NTFS drives did a few magic tricks with the line of text in Fstab so they could access their NTFS drives. Problem for me is that my sda3 mount isn't showing up at all in fstab, even though fstab is supposed to (as far as I know) show all mounted devices on there. All the while, I have my sda3 totally accessible from /media/Storage/. Any pointers as to why this is?After I installed Ubuntu, I just mounted the sda3 with the Disk Utility from System->Administation and didn't think much of it afterwards until now.What's the best course of action here? remount the ntfs partiton using fstab? Convert the ntfs partition into an ext4? I have a lot of data on there I want to keep as well.
