I had her go at it under VMWare so she could have something to fall back on while learning Linux. Problem is after installing KUbuntu we can no longer get back into it as the system locks up while it is trying to boot. All that is seen on the screen is the KUbuntu bootup logo screen and it stays there.
View 1 Replies View RelatedOpenSuse and rpm. Been using Debian for 7 years, so be gentle. I upgrade KDE 4.3.1 to 4.3.5 through the one-click install. After confirming some actions due to dependencies the install runs and in the end it said it failed to install a bunch of packages. These packages installed just fine and everything works as it should.
I was wondering if this happens more often, as it makes me kinda nervous if the installer warns me? Perhaps even more if it warns about things that aren't correct.
I've just installed Karmic 9.10 to a new 500GB sata in a friends PC and it boots and runs fine; internet and everything just works. Just reinstalled XP-SP3 to old 80GB pata drive in same PC, it boots ok, but has no sound, poor graphics and network is limited to 1394 - no ethernet.
I built this PC about 3 years ago and it had been running XP with SP2 then SP3 installed, and everything worked fine. So over the past day I have installed XP-SP3 (slipstreamed disc) in it 3 times now, then went back and tried XP-SP2 (earlier slipstreamed disc) twice with same result - no ethernet, poor graphics, no sound?
But it all works fine in Karmic?
I ran Karmic's disk utilities (Palimsest) on the old 80GB and it tested fine, no problems at all.
PC comprises Gigabyte M55plus-S3G m/board, AMD 3800+ 2.4Ghz CPU, 1 GB RAM and a 64MB NVidia graphics card (can't recall model)
Is it possible MS built 'crippleware' in to XP, or could there be a hardware problem that Karmic didn't detect (doubt it)
Karmic is going to be the main OS now, so I don't think the loss of XP is a problem, but friend still wanted to be able to boot XP, even though XP is installed in Virtualbox in Karmic (I did this by importing a previously saved XP 'appliance').
I have debian 4.0 installed for my apache web server (for some reason I did not require PHP all these days...). Now, I wanted to install PHP5 on the server. View 4 Replies View RelatedOn top of the what's installed from the Debian 6.01 live CD I add the secuirty updates and a small number of programs (Audacity, OpenShot, AbiWord, get_iplayer, ripit and SMPlayer). Because at present while in a phase of distro-hopping I tend to fiddle a bit with new distros and reinstall them more often than spend time undoing a more complex mess, can the added programs be stored so that they don't need to be downloaded again,o the dependencies complicate this or make it impossible? I'm imagining hopefully some folder of .deb files that exist after downloading that I can put on a CD for repeated use. Sorry if I'm being naive.
If this can be done, a jargon-free set of steps would be much appreciated. I use Mobile Broadband with a low monthly limit so it will help. Though I forget the method now, I did once when using Linux Mint use some 'script' that would enable me to put programs on a CD to download at my parents' home when I had no internet, but it was hit and miss it seemed, with missing dependencies galore.
I just installed Arch (x86_64). I am trying to setup Xorg. I have not installed a DE or WM yet, I just want to make sure Xorg is 100% first.
I had to edit the xorg.conf myself to direct it to my Intel graphics driver, but now it seems to work perfectly.

I'm not to sure this is the place I should post this, but couldn't find any place for it to fit. So here is the deal..I am running 10.10 with the standard LAMP setup. I am running a drupal 7 site no problems. What I need to do is run a multi site sub directory. (domain.com/newsite). So far the best I can do is get a directory index of the second site (domain.com/newsite), but cant run the installer. (I did the symbolic link to the doc root of the drupal install.)If I type in the url domain.com/newsite/install.php I get not found. I placed an index.html test page and it renders fine. I think I'm close but just not there yet.
Any ideas from anyone? I can get Sobdomains to work fine on a test mache, but sadly I need the domain/site to work due to lack of DNS support at the moment. I tried to get some info from the drupal forum, but everything always points to subdomin setups. I also posted over there, but it seems like the forums have very little support and are a bit on the slow side.

I've been trying to compile and install different terminal emulators:Eterm, aterm, and libAfterImage for urxvt.
I've been getting all these errors, and it seems odd to me. I did some fiddling awhile back enabling KMS with my radeon, install custom packages for xf86-ati, mesa, and libdrm. Could that or some other fiddling have broken these dependencies?

I've tried to do the installs using Unetbootin, LiveUSBcreator, and Startup Disk creator and the Install program from within the distros themselves, regardless of installation method the same problem returns. So I do not think the problem is related to method of installation.
Maybe it's hardware? I've tried a total of four different motherboards, (an MSI, 2 Gigabyte and an Asus) all with updated BIOS, all 4 of which work perfectly fine with normal Linux installations to the HD. I have no troubles running any of the above distros when installed to a hard drive.
The problem comes when I install to a thumb drive. Which thumb drive? Take your pick. I've used Sony, SanDisk, Kingston and a handful of cheaper brands in sizes from 2G up to 16G. The problem always returns regardless of the hardware involved. Therefore I do not think the problem is related to hardware.
I want a fully functioning installation of Linux on a thumbdrive. (I do not simply want a Live CD copied to a thumbdrive.) This will allow me to make changes to the software/settings and have those changes remain after rebooting. I'm able to do this just fine, and everything works perfectly until the third, fourth, or fifth reboot. At this point I enter my password and my password is no longer accepted. Sometimes the screen flickers a little, sometimes it just reloads the prompt. But it doesn't let me in. At this point it's Game Over. All the hard work installing and tailoring the install is down the drain. Yes, I've searched and found threads of this similar problem. Many of them go back to 2005 or 2006. The vast majority of them are people begging for help, receiving a few suggestions, finding no resolution and then the thread just dies. Honestly I've spent many, many hours following outdated advice that has, on occasion, worked, but only temporarily. The problem always returns. Something is seriously screwed up and I can't be alone.
So here I sit with a brand new 4Gb Sandisk that up until last night had a beautifully running Ubuntu 10.10 installation. And yet, voila, my password is now no longer good enough. It simply will not let me log on. I enter it, hit enter, and the log-in screen simply reloads itself.
i have fedora12 and have been noticing that on a few programs (xvidcap, nALFS; just to name a couple) anyways these programs when i go to install they will come up with a missing dependency error and so i'll go hunt them down and install them and i am told that they are already installed...so what is the deal...any ideas. should i just go for a reinstall of the whole system?

I've got 9.04 and 9.10 both installed on the same machine. The /home directory is on a separate partition, so both OSes use the same /home.I can't get Compiz to work at all in 9.10, even though it's been perfectly fine in 9.04. Is there a backport of some sort that i should install?The fixes I've found all point to editing the xorg.conf file, but of course, Karmic doesn't have an xorg.conf file.I've tried reinstalling the Compiz files, reinstalled the open-source video drivers, installed/uninstalled fglrx drivers a few times, rebooted dozens of times.

I'm trying Xubuntu on my wife's elderly Dell Inspiron 1100 laptop. It's working beautifully for the most part. But I've tried two different usb webcams, both of which are recognized by Cheese but don't work in Skype.
In Skype, what happens is that Skype is aware that a webcam is present. It does NOT say "no webcam detected". But in Skype Options, when I visit the Options for "Video Devices", and click on the "Test" button to test the webcam, nothing happens at all.
And when I make a test video call to a friend, with video turned on, all the friend sees is a black screen where the image should be, and a little turning symbol presumably to indicate "please wait for image to appear". It never appears.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a logitech dinovo wireless keyboard with those extra multimedia keys on it like Volume Up, Volume Down, and Mute. They didn't do anything so I installed KeyTouch. I was able to select my keyboard from the list in KeyTouch, and if everything was working right then at that point all my extra keys would work. But they still didn't do anything. So I went into the Keytouch editor to make my own custom profile. You click add to add a new key and then it asks you to press a key. So I press the key (Mute) and it recognizes it, and then you select what action you want it to do. I did this for Mute, Volume Up and Volume Down. But yet they still don't work!
Now obviously it detects my key presses (keycode) just fine when I added the new key. So it should do the assigned action when I press that key. What I *want* it to do is mute or change the volume of the Headphones. But as I said that wasn't working at all for some reason. So to narrow it down I instead set the Mute key to simply launch firefox. But it still doesn't work. So there is some disconnect... in the keytouch editor it's detecting the key just fine, but afterwards when you press Mute it doesn't do the action it's supposed to.
As far as I can tell, I have all the applicable applications and plugins (for this, Debian 5.0.6 installation). I type in Code:about:plugins in either iceweasel or epiphany browser and get a list that includes:

I don't get any sound from my left speaker. With my headphones plugged in though I get sound in both speakers. I've upgraded my Kernel to .36. I'm using Ubuntu 10.10. I'm on an MSI A7200 which is a great laptop but apparently a very rare one. There's like no info on it at all on the internet.

After GRUB is passed the screen goes black, but boot process is continued to "init 3". SSH and all daemons work fine. I get a screen on the remote inside board, but no output on the attached LCD (Graphic: ATI ES1000 on board). I seams that output is redirected to "Remote Inside Board" only. how to switch output back to screen?
View 9 Replies View RelatedMy Dad has a work laptop, but it is on its last leg because since he doesn't work in the office, they don't believe he needs a good laptop. Now, hand-me-down laptops are fine, but the problem with this one is the hard drive is going bad to the point where to load anything takes ages (and I'm pretty sure it is the hard drive because when I used Code: dd it stopped because of errors, and some S.M.A.R.T programs for windows showed problems.
My question is this, is there a file system for linux that can put up with those faults without slowing the PC to a crawl (and I mean crawl, 5 minutes minimum to start up thunderbird and get emails, and any ubuntu/kubuntu/xubuntu through Wubi ok an unbelievable amount of time to start using ext2/3 you need to know anything else, just ask.BTW, if it matters to anyone, about a year ago the PC worked better, and now stuff takes longer to load, which is partly why I ruled out graphics or processor problems.
