I have debian 4.0 installed for my apache web server (for some reason I did not require PHP all these days...). Now, I wanted to install PHP5 on the server. But I get http errors.When I run apt-get update I get the following error0% [Connecting to security.debian.org] later it displays[URL]The same happens when I try to install PHP5What could be the reason... should I fix sources.list?
View 4 RepliesI'm having trouble installing Fedora 11 using the URL method. When I put in a F11 netinstall CD, or even Disc 1, I press tab on the first option and add "askmethod" to the end of the text. Each time I point the installer to my local FTP and press enter after typing in the FTP url, the installer just hangs there. I've even tried deleting ALL the files from the F11 folder on my FTP server and downloaded ALL the files at:
ftp://ftp.linux.ncsu.edu/pub/fedora/...edora/i386/os/
Still...the same thing.
When I pointed the installer to:
ftp://ftp.linux.ncsu.edu/pub/fedora/...edora/i386/os/
Everything worked fine, albeit slow as it was DL from the NCSU FTP server.
Am I doing something wrong with my FTP server? It is anon, so there is no authentication issues.
I am running Valgrind on my program. It shows me two errors but mentions only addresses against them and not actual code even on a debug build.

I've noticed that when I open firefox I get really strange HTTP and HTTPS connections showing up in firestarter (which as I understand it is just a GUI for IPtables). They connect to various bits of a site listed as 1e100.net (when you use "lookup hostnames") such as wy-in-f18.1e100.net, they stay connected all the time as far as I can see unless I close firefox. I've heard people say they are connected to Google, but I can close all tabs after loging out of google and still see them... it's very odd.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI changed the password on my samba server and now I cannot mount the share anymore from my Windows 7 box. The logs shows no errors whatsoever about authentication, is that normal? I remember from a long time ago that I never saw samba do that and it has made troubleshooting very difficult.
I changed the password with the smbpasswd wanuser command the samba version is 3.2.5

When I crank up the log level, samba shows lots and lots of totally irrelevant messages like connected and disconnected, but not why it got disconnected. On the Windows 7 machine, I get an error that the user and password is not correct. Why does Samba not report it?

In KDE I have no System Notifications, Kaffiene, Amarok2, Amarok and Xine immediately exit when opened without an error. If I try to open the System Settings/Multimedia or System Settings/Notifications control panels they also exit without an error. I have audio in other applications, MPlayer, Skype, VLC, Songbird, etc., as well as from the Konsole. I've tested Konsole audio using the published guidelines in the Audio HowTo, 'speaker-test' works fine for all users. In Yast2 I can configure and test the audio card without errors, but I am not able to get USB headphones working. I have been through the 'Check your multimedia problem in ten steps'. There are no errors or missing dependencies showing up. I've booted from the 11.2 Live CD and everything worked fine including KDE Notifications and application audio. I've tried deleting my .kde4 profile, this didn't fix the problem, and application and control panel behaviour remained the same with a clean profile.

On top of the what's installed from the Debian 6.01 live CD I add the secuirty updates and a small number of programs (Audacity, OpenShot, AbiWord, get_iplayer, ripit and SMPlayer). Because at present while in a phase of distro-hopping I tend to fiddle a bit with new distros and reinstall them more often than spend time undoing a more complex mess, can the added programs be stored so that they don't need to be downloaded again,o the dependencies complicate this or make it impossible? I'm imagining hopefully some folder of .deb files that exist after downloading that I can put on a CD for repeated use. Sorry if I'm being naive.
If this can be done, a jargon-free set of steps would be much appreciated. I use Mobile Broadband with a low monthly limit so it will help. Though I forget the method now, I did once when using Linux Mint use some 'script' that would enable me to put programs on a CD to download at my parents' home when I had no internet, but it was hit and miss it seemed, with missing dependencies galore.
What happened to kde-core? I have two choices of bloat, kde-standard or kde-full. I don't want stuff like konqueror or kmail. I don't want Gwenview, Okular, or Ksnapshot. I don't care for all the media players. I don't need Kaddressbook or Korganizer. Is there a way to do a normal, minimalistic install without this stuff or am I screwed? I want to reinstall on my laptop and the boss' laptop and would prefer not to have the extras,
View 6 Replies View RelatedAfter logging into a fresh Debian 5.0 (lenny) install from a VPS (virtual private server) provider, I run 'apt-get update' and then 'apt-get upgrade' in attempt to get all the security updates, assuming that's what said commands do. Along the way exim (exim4) and possibly other programs (not confirmed) gets installed and is setup to run on bootup...despite it not being installed previously. Why is this? I would expect that either 1) previously uninstalled pkgs are not installed with the 'upgrade," or 2) if 'upgrade' essentially performing a "install everything that's not already installed" maneuver, I wonder why it's not installing a LOT more packages (then just the view I see installed on my system during the 'upgrade.')
Separately: can someone confirm an 'apt-get update' followed by apt-get upgrade' on a fresh Debian 5.0 install system will basically upgrade to 5.0.8 ("current rev level" for lenny)?
I just installed Debian stable from the standard i386 DVD. When I booted up, I noticed that GRUB showed me that I had the amd64 version of Debian installed. However, I did not download an amd64 DVD, nor do I want that architecture installed on my system (even though my system can support it). The output from "uname -a" (which included both "amd64" and "x86_64") also seem to confirm this. However, I was able to install 32 bit packages and get them to work (gdebi wouldn't even let me do this when I had Ubuntu 32-bit).
View 4 Replies View Relatedjust did a fresh testing install using the debian installer. i have gnome and an nvidia card. i installed the nvidia driver using the debian way outlined on the wiki. then i ran nvidia-xconfig and it generated an XF86Config file instead of an xorg.conf file. everything works, but shouldnt it be an xorg.conf and if so, maybe it isnt reading the XF86Config file at all?
View 10 Replies View RelatedI have been trying to install linux on my HP pavillion 511w for several days. The first I tried to install was debian, it didn't freeze but it kept saying unable to mount cdrom drive. (This may have been from an incorrect jumper setting that I later changed.) I haven't tried debian since changing the jumper.
I next tried ubuntu 10.04 beta 2, all it did was go to a ubuntu flash screen that never stopped cycling these small round "lights".
I then tried the "stable" ubuntu 9.10. This went to a screen with several options for installing ubuntu, checking the disk etc. No matter what I selected it would just freeze. Since this is my first install I wasn't sure if this was normal or not so I waited several hours and still nothing, after enough time I concluded it must have been frozen. But before I continue wasting time waiting for hours can someone tell me... when installing these linux versions is there a sign that it is loading, booting, or installing the OS? I figure it must have a status bar or something, but want to make sure.
I next tried linux mint 8. It did the same thing, went to a sceen with several options and when I select something it says "loading" at the bottom with a blinking cursor, but of course it never loads anything, just sits there. This one throws me off a bit because it says its loading and the cursor blinks but it just doesn't seem like it is actually doing anything.
I have also downloaded ubuntu 8 which I plan to try next. I've tried changing the boot/install options by pushing F6 or whatever it was.
The computer is an older system that I never use because its so slow running XP. I thought linux would run faster and I could get some use out of it while learning/experimenting with linux. I always have to have projects to keep my mind working, but constantly failing at the starting line is not much fun.
my rhythmbox is showing a new tab that says "Import errors" I am attaching the screenshot of that error report and one major problem I have found out after that is rhythmbox contains non audio formats (like .iso and others) and rhythmbox tries to play these non audio files and make scratchy sounds. how come its reading these formats and it creates nuisance while the song changes and it tries to play those formats. I am using Lucid Lynx.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm installing a file server on Lenny (Samba on RAID5, nothing exotic)
First, I installed on a basic SATA drive, to check everything else in the system was recognized correctly. Success.
Then, I added my 3405 Adaptec board, with a 3 drive RAID5, and reinstalled, still on the lone SATA disk.
Install runs ok, shows correctly the 3405 board, detects the logical drive alongside with the SATA drive. Smooth. I install Lenny on the SATA drive, planning to use the RAID5 for later partitioning and data storage. During install, the SATA disk is shown as SCSI-1 and the RAID5 disk as SCSI-2. Again, install completes correctly.
But on reboot and after selecting the default config, the system complains it can't find /dev/sda1!
If I remove the 3405 board, Lenny boots fine.
Is the presence of the Adaptec board and RAID5 drive changing the numbering of the disks, so that the SATA disk is no longer seen as /dev/sda1 ?
Im trying to do a frugal install off the hard drive (no usb,cdrom) with unetbootin. It installs grub and then will boot the installer but is still tries to find the removable media. Whats going on????

I installed Nagios on my Ubuntu 10.04 server using apt-get and when I accessed the web console, everything was OK. I made some changes to apache (creating some new virtual sites) and since then Nagios gives me a warning message for HTTP with the message, HTTP WARNING: HTTP/1.1 404 Not Found. The sites that I created are working perfectly. I noticed that the attemps are 4/4. Does this need to be reset or does Nagios automatically reset that once it detects the issue is resolved?

Using google, I found that this was a Filesystem something from Gnome, that would also be used If I drag something from my browser to my desktop.
