Ubuntu Installation :: Basic Packages To Get Wireless Working In Gnome?

May 24, 2010

Let me preface, assuming your wireless card works with gnome, doing an install from scratch, what packages do you need to get wireless working? So far I've installed gnome-core, menu, menu-xdg and gdm. network-manager and network-manager-gnome are both now installed, I can setup stuff in network connections, but can't see the nm-applet in the notification area, and it never seems to try to connect to my wireless network, do I need any specific other packages (wireless works fine if I install the entire ubuntu 10.04 live CD).

I found the driver (net8192su.inf) on the disk which came with the adopter and installed the driver using the GUI for ndsiwrapper. Unfortunately I get a message "invalid driver" after I installed it?

Ubuntu Networking :: Belkin Basic Wireless USB Adapter?

Apr 1, 2011

I had a Netgear Wireless USB adapter that got fried (probably because it was about 10 years old lol). It was a B and used to connect at 54 Mbps, but as it got older, was only connecting at 1 or 2 Mbps and would constantly disconnect and reconnect until it finally died.I went out and bought a Belkin Basic Wireless USB Adapter (Model Number: F7D1101). This one is an N and it connects at 150 Mbps when booted into XP, but when booted into Ubuntu 9.04, nothing shows up. It doesn't turn on, the list of networks isn't there.

Could it be that it's not compatible? I plug in the Netgear B and it shows up, connects and disconnects (because it's fried) and shows me a list of connections. But when I plug in the Belkin N, I get absolutely nothing at all. And I forgot how I connected the Netgear so...?By the way, the wireless router is a Netgear N that I got from Comcast Cable, if that helps in any way? Is there something that I need to do in terminal to "turn it on manually" or something?

Ubuntu Networking :: Setting Up P2P Basic Wireless Network

May 5, 2011

I am new to linux and just set up my wired network, still a few kinks that needs to be sorted out. When setting up a wireless connection, what is needed for a basic p2p network. Wireless connection from one laptop to another to enable sharing? What I have done was set up a wireless network on my windows machine, connect to it using ubuntu. (this is all done with the built in wireless adapters, no routers). The connection is made, both the windows and ubuntu machines say connected, but none of the computers show up in the networks directory?

Ubuntu Networking :: What Are The First Basic Steps To Setup A Wireless Connection

Aug 7, 2010

I have a computer with both wire and wireless connections. Wired connection works fine, but I would also setup the wireless connection.(I also have a dual boot on this cumputer with WinXP where both wire and wireless connections works fine. So, wire and wireless configuration of the actual router is not an issue here.)

At this point I just want to know the main/overview basic steps of setting-up the wireless connection on the computer. Also if you could suggest any links to guidelines for these steps. I have been thinking about something simple like this, but I might have missed a lotInvestigate if Ubuntu finds the wifi-hardware - the installed wifi card.Investigate if Ubuntu have an installed driver for this wifi-card.Configure the Wireless Network connection, like SSID.Unplug wire connection and reboot.

Slackware :: Use Of Zenwalk GNOME Packages As GNOME Distribution

Jul 26, 2010

Recently I've read an interview at Distrowatch, where a topic was the compatibility of Slackware and Zenwalk packages. My understanding was that now they should both be used in both systems.

As Slackware doesn't feature a complete GNOME distribution, my curiosity was about the ability of Zenwalk's GNOME packages play a role there. If so, the second question is how intrusive those packages are considering Slackware 13.1.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: ATI 320M Notebook - Video Doesnot Seem To Be Working Other Than A Basic VESA Configuration

May 5, 2011

I recently took my Compaq Presario 2175US notebook completely apart and resoldered the power jack so that it could be used again (after 2 years of dormancy). After successfully putting it back together (with a handful of leftover screws ) , I was able to successfully install Ubuntu 10.04 (Windows XP seemed silly at this point and I really like using Open Office). Anyway, after a couple of days looking for the wireless driver for the internal wireless, I found the answer and got that working.

Unfortunately, the video does not seem to be working other than a basic VESA configuration. The notebook has the ATI Radeon IGP 320M video chip installed. I have searched for many days (about a week) on the internet for a way to get this working, but have been unsuccessful. Although I have found many posts all over the net (here included) that list folks with similar problems, and having tried many of the "fixes", I am still unsuccessful at getting the video card to work in any more than a minimal manner (no games, no 3D of any kind...etc.)

Ubuntu Installation :: Gnome-keyring-daemon Not Working With 10.04

Since I've upgraded to Ubuntu 10.04 my gnome-keyring-daemon isn't working on login. It is running - ps ax shows:

but it doesn't seem to be accessible. Seahorse says: "Couldn't communicate with key ring daemon", and I never get asked to unlock my keyring on login (thus saved wireless keys are not available, for example). If I kill the gnome-keyring-daemon process and run it again from the command line, everything works. There are not messages in /var/log/messages from the keyring daemon, so i don't know what it is doing wrong.

Ubuntu Installation :: Basic Reinstall (Partition And Bootloader)

Apr 15, 2010

I installed Mint 8 on my sister's laptop (after her existing Vista, and I did so on a separate partition created during the normal setup process in Gparted) and she now wants to try out another distro and take off Mint, so how would I go about this? Would I boot from the distro's live CD, determine the correct partition, (I'm thinking of Gparted here) and then... what?

- Would I have to mark the partition to be deleted, delete it, then ask it to install on a similar-sized partition?
- Or would I not delete it, just mark to format it as ext4 or some other file system and it would then just install the OS of that live CD over the existing partition?
- What about the swap partition - does that need any changes at all?
- Will Grub/Grub2 et al normally be updated to reflect the replaced OS?
- I may do this on my own desktop machine in the future: I may want to consolidate all my existing partitions into one easy to manage massive partition. Is this also easy to do?
- How can I determine which OSs are on which partitions?

Fedora Installation :: Preupgrade Leftover Packages - 176 F13 Packages Remaining

Nov 17, 2010

I recently upgraded from F13 to F14 using "preupgrade". This is the first time I've used preupgrade. So far, F14 is running OK. There are some leftovers from F13 and I'm wondering if this is correct.

Q1: There are 176 F13 packages remaining. [alfrugal@localhost Documents]$ rpm -qa | grep fc13 | wc -l 176 Is this OK? FWIW, after the upgrade, I ran "package-cleanup --orphans" as recommended by the "preupgrade" page on the Fedora Project wiki.

Q2: Also, my GRUB menu was correctly updated for F14, but it still contains the three entries it had for F13. Is it normal for the preupgrade process to require the user to clean up the obsolete entries from the GRUB menu?

Ubuntu Installation :: Start With Basic System And Add Manually Each And Every Package

Feb 15, 2011

I've been playing around with various distributions including Arch Linux, openSuse, and Ubuntu with it's derivatives. So far, I feel that Ubuntu flows the best out of them all, offering the best mix of user-friendliness, eye-candy, and performance. HOWEVER, I really like doing things from the ground up and like having complete control over what I am using/spending resources on. OpenSuse was very attractive to me because of it's [URL]... which allows you to start with a basic system and add, manually, each and every package you want so you get exactly what you want. Does Ubuntu offer any system like this? Or, alternately, is there a "barebone" download in which you get basically a command line with networking and can apt-get all of the packages you want?

Ubuntu Installation :: Wireless Not Working On Mini-laptop / Resolve This?

Jan 3, 2011

New user to Linux. I installed Ubuntu 10.04 LTS to a mini-laptop, but the built-in wireless card/chip is not working. It worked under the previous OS, XP. There is a switch on the case frame that enables it, but the active light did not turn on during installation. I installed a second time and manually flicked the switch every one second to see if it needed human intervention, but to no avail.

My next step was to try to update Ubuntu to see if it would help, so I inserted a Belkin USB wireless, but the connection was intermittent at best. I believe the device is faulty. A wired connection is impossible as I am sharing with my neighbor. What should I do to help Ubuntu the internal wireless device?

Here is the output of lshw code...
