Fedora Installation :: F14: Select Just The Core Gnome Packages When Installing?
Nov 5, 2010
I'm trying out Fedora 14 on an Asus EeePC 1000 netbook.I'd like to install just the basic Gnome interface, its helper applications and Gedit &cI don't want openoffice or evolution &c on this small net book. How would I go about choosing the appropriate packages at install time?If this is documented anywhere, just point me at the page!

I'm new to Fedora (not linux) and I was wondering how I would go about doing a minimal install of fedora 12. I downloaded the live disc but it doesn't give me installation options (I'm new to minimal installs so I don't know that much). I also searched all over looking for a fedora minimal install iso, something similar to the ubuntu minimal install iso that is only 12mb.

I've just installed Fedora 10 LIVE CD on USB (1GB) on a MSI WIND Netbook (no optical drive) and realise I don't have the extra packages options available for installation. I do have the DVD ISO and I'm just wondering if there's a way of accessing packages in the DVD without reinstallation, like Open Office, Gimp etc. Is there a way of accessing softwares in the DVD ISO? or Some how install them into my currently running Fedora 10 on my MSI WIND?

I've noticed this happen with every CentOS installation I've done in the past and it's confusing me. On the software template screen select, I always select "Server" and leave the extras option unchecked, I also check "Customise now". The only things I choose are the editors (to get vi), Web server and server configuration tools (and this time also Java). I didn't select any GUI programs, yet it still installs things like X, GNOME components and also samba. Why does it do that? There no way they're needed for dependencies. Is there something I'm missing when selecting the software components? Why does it still install samba when I didn't select it from under "Servers" components? Or have I misunderstood what software selection does and it installs all those components regardless but doesn't automatically turn the services on?

I have an old laptop running Fedora Core 6. I need to update it for a project at work. I am using my home network and a hard wired connection. I can ping my router, and ifconfig shows my interface is active and has the right IP address assigned. When I try to open the GUI package updater, it fails to connect. Opening an browser also fails to connect. My firewall is turned off. I suspect a service is not starting, but everything I can think of is running. why layer 3 is working, but my apps won't connect to the Internet?

I have created a virtual machine of a system running Fedora Core 4 and I need to upgrade it to Fedora Core 10. Based on what I have read, it iis possible so I started theupgrade process. I get an error message saying that /dev/hda6 (my root paritition does not exist) even though it does.
Does the installer need to read a label from /etc/fstab? I executed tune2fs -L / /dev/hda6 amd ,and added LABEL=/ for the corresponding entry for fstab. but the FEDORA CORE 10 is still giving the same problems for the installation process. Should I upgrade to an intermediate verson like Fedora Core 7 first?

Many people have multi-core cpus supporting frequency scaling now, if you want to see if the workload is being evenly distributed then add as many CPU Frequency Scaling Monitor applets to the Gnome panel as you have cores/cpus. Then right-click each one and select preferences and choose which cpu to monitor.
Now compile a large program or run a cpu intensive game and watch how the workload dances around between the two (hopefully)
Some clever apps like gnome chess will multi-thread and make max use of both cores, sadly many others won't.

I've just finished installing Ubuntu 11.04 on my computer. I wanted to install LAMP server, but I noticed that the option to select packages by tasks has disappeared from synaptic. Is there the option to re-enable such a feature I found it very helpul? (Don't worry about LAMP, I've already installed it following some tutorial, but I am just interested in restoring the "Select packages by task" in Synaptic).

I want to install packages such as samba, openssh etc. from a CD rather than download it from the net each time I build a new machine. I am able to install them from the installation CD after using the apt-cdrom add command but what I want to do is burn my own CD with only the packages I require and install from that. I have put them on a CD, entered apt-cdrom add but get errors about the name of the disk, and a read error when copying package lists.

I recently upgraded from F13 to F14 using "preupgrade". This is the first time I've used preupgrade. So far, F14 is running OK. There are some leftovers from F13 and I'm wondering if this is correct.
Q1: There are 176 F13 packages remaining. [alfrugal@localhost Documents]$ rpm -qa | grep fc13 | wc -l 176 Is this OK? FWIW, after the upgrade, I ran "package-cleanup --orphans" as recommended by the "preupgrade" page on the Fedora Project wiki.
Q2: Also, my GRUB menu was correctly updated for F14, but it still contains the three entries it had for F13. Is it normal for the preupgrade process to require the user to clean up the obsolete entries from the GRUB menu?

I'm running F13 on a HP laptop. I've been about 10 days with no internet connection. Yesterday I got internet again, and I did a package update.
After that, I rebooted and both top and bottom bars were gone from my Gnome desktop. I couldn't retrieve them anymore.
What can I do to get them back?

I just installed F12 the other day and I've run into my first problem (this is not a knock, in fact this is probably the best release of Fedora 12 ever for me). Installing Skype from their website. I realise that I'm attempting to install an 1586 binary in x86-64 so it's risky, but that's not the point (yet anyway). I can't even get it to install. I've looked around and can't find anything meaningful on this (other than posts which provided no help). When I try to install the rpm from [URL] with the GUI, I get the message "This action cannot be completed" with the following under details: "The name org.freedesktop.PackageKit was not provided by any .service files". I then tried to install it from a root terminal and got the message, "Package skype-2.1.0.47-fc10.i586.rpm is not signed". Is there a way to change this behavior? And is there a temporary workaround (say, for just this app)? All in all, I love this release, but I cannot recommend Fedora 12 to someone new to Linux without alleviating this issue for them (I'm set to do this tomorrow). This would hamper their efforts to learn how to do basic things, such as installing a random program like Skype.

Just installed Fedora 12. After installing a new distro, I usually remove the individual programs that I have no use for or interest in. In Fedora, I've noticed that, for KDE at least, I can't remove just one program I have to remove the whole "group" of programs. For example, I might want only one game on my system and remove the rest but KPackageKit only allows to me to remove KDE Games (all of them) instead of just the programs I have no interest in. This is not the same as other distros I have tried. Is there a way around this?

Let me preface, assuming your wireless card works with gnome, doing an install from scratch, what packages do you need to get wireless working? So far I've installed gnome-core, menu, menu-xdg and gdm. network-manager and network-manager-gnome are both now installed, I can setup stuff in network connections, but can't see the nm-applet in the notification area, and it never seems to try to connect to my wireless network, do I need any specific other packages (wireless works fine if I install the entire ubuntu 10.04 live CD).
