Gnome was working fine, then rebooted and it now loads a basic x windows GUI. What happened to Gnome loading and how do I get it back? It's not on the session manager menu
View 6 RepliesAll of a sudden I can no longer control the default size of my gnome terminal windows. The option is just gone from the preference window. If I look in gconf-editor my old values are still there but they are ignored.

I thought Unity is default now, at least that's what it says on Ubuntu website. Why I got Gnome. And when I install Ubuntu, how do I switch between this two? Are applications compatible?
View 2 Replies View RelatedMy Dell poweredge server running CentOS 5.4 and booting kernel-2.6.18-164.15.1.el5. All boot processes seem okay and the graphical screens for CentOS operate, but just before the desktop loads the screen goes blank and the arrow/cursor is being circled by small spheres. This remains indefinitely. While the arrow is being circled, here are the results of 'getinfo.sh device'

Let me preface, assuming your wireless card works with gnome, doing an install from scratch, what packages do you need to get wireless working? So far I've installed gnome-core, menu, menu-xdg and gdm. network-manager and network-manager-gnome are both now installed, I can setup stuff in network connections, but can't see the nm-applet in the notification area, and it never seems to try to connect to my wireless network, do I need any specific other packages (wireless works fine if I install the entire ubuntu 10.04 live CD).
View 4 Replies View RelatedI am trying to run X windows on CentOS with GNOME. When I first enter startx i get the message:
Fatal server error: Server is already active for display 0 If this server is no longer running, remove /tmp/.X0-lock and start again.
Then I removed the .X0-lock file ran startx again and I got this message:

Finally, I ran startx -- :1 and then it flashed a black screen with the X mouse cursor but a second later it just went right back to the desktop.
I've installed Ubuntu desktop edition 10.04 so far, using alcohol tool as I wanted to install "inside Windows".I successfully installed it everything seems to be fine to me. But, the problem is when I select Ubuntu from boot menu it stops at a console with some grub loader message and doesn't shows login screen.
Please, not that I had installed it a couple of time before and it worked perfectly for some reason and Windows problem I had to uninstall it.
I can also post pictures of that screen if you require, I've to capture it through my mobile phone, which is with suck graphics.

And now I manage to use Yum and it is not working, I cant find out what is happening but yum loads the plugins and then freezes and is no reaction to ctrl-c or something to stop it so I am have to kill it dna finally got no result from any update processes. Also I manage to clean cache or even to run yum. I checked the logs and it writes nothing about this ,neither an error or something to make me understand whats happening. Tried to install with rpm but the same thing happens. It just freezes...

View 5 Replies View RelatedI am running CentOS 5.3, Gnome Panel 2.16.1. It seems some KDE applications just flash crazily in the windows list (task bar in Gnome panel). Usually when a new event happens to a window, it flashes to remind the user (I hate this *feature* anyway, but can't disable it...) But this time, when I switch from another workspace to the workspace that has (more than one) KDE applications (like kile and kdvi), they just simply start to flash, and the flashing window list appears on every workspace unless you click it.
I tried to disable the animation from gconf-editor, without success. Does anyone have similar issues? It is really annoying..

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a windows box running w2003 server on 1 volume with 2x ntfs basic partitions. c: = the windows bit, d: = the data bit for user data.I have cloned (clonezilla) the volume to another and deleted the data (d bit and want to extend the c: into the freed space.I'm booted from a partedmagicv5 cd and using gparted to attempt this.I can't see a way to do this with gparted but then, I could be thick. Maybe I clone off reformat and copy back?Is there a better way or even is this the correct forum (please don't refer me to Microsoft website:-) for this type of question?This is a test box so not worried about breaking it, but the test is to try to solve a live problem at a school I support which is running out of hd space.

since the last SuSE online update (last Wednesday?) the X server no longer starts on our notebook (ATI HD 4200) so we only have the consoles available, which limits the WAF heavily . We were using SuSE 11.3 with the Gnome desktop for about one months and it worked smoothly, but since the update (which included a kernel update to 2.6.34.7-0.7) the X server tries to start 5 times and then gives up. I used the ati driver ati-fglrxG02-kmp-desktop, version 8.762_k2.6.34.0_12-31.1 from the ATI Suse repository. To solve the problem I already switched to the Xorg driver which lead to a color distorted display but no segmentation fault. But I'd like to get the ati driver running again.
I can no longer launch an email to a contact from gnome-do. I select a contact (using Gmail Contacts plugin) in the first pane, "Email" in the second pane, hit return and get nothing. I use Evolution as my email client because I like the tight integration with the gnome desktop. Previously, in Lucid 10.04 if I'm remembering correctly, this action in Gnome-Do would launch an Evolution email window with the To: field already populated. I'm running 32-bit 10.10 Maverick. For some unknown (to me) reason, "Ctrl+Shift+u, <unicode number>" doesn't work in F12. I had gotten quite used to this method in order to input several symbols and if you know what you want, it is a lot faster compared to using the character map. This was working in all recent Fedora versions.Does anyone know how to enable this functionality?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI do not know what to do, i cannot load windows partition. it just loads grub again. this must have been something that happened when i upgraded to the 10.04 or w/e. can someoen help me out with what i can do to stop this or fix it. maybe i can reinstall but i want to know what will work first, i do not have a lot of time to fool with my computer like this again. i spent a week getting ubuntu on my computer the first time so i do not ever want to spend that much time again especially in finals week. !

View 3 Replies View RelatedThere have been plenty of occassions when I've needed to setup a RHEL or CentOS box to act as a NAT router / firewall, and I am able to do this fairly easily by enabling ip_forwarding, and setting up a couple of iptables FORWARD rules and a nat rule.
However, what I'd like to do now, sounds in theory like it should be simpler, but I seem to be having a mental block and all of my searches pull up results about people playing around with LinkSys routers and so on.
Let me give an example scenario. Let's say I have two subnets, A and B. A has the IP range 10.0.1.0/24 and B has 10.0.2.0/24.
I have my RHEL box, with two NICs. One is connected to subnet A and has the IP 10.0.1.1/24, the other to subnet B with the IP 10.0.2.1/24.
All I want to do, is make clients on each subnet be able to talk to each other via my Linux box.
No, NAT'ing, no firewall rules, just straight up, good old-fashioned routing.
After rebooting my centos server I no longer have a /dev/sda entry, nor any /dev/sd* entries. What could have gone wrong?

Among them were: fontconfig, pango, gtk+, cairo, glib. goffice, pixman, tiff, and atk. Afterwards, I got missing fonts with some apps, but the biggest problem is interference with my Vmware Workstation GUIs. Yesterday I removed all the libraries I installed hoping to recover. Now things are better, but when I open a terminal on the desktop it opens jammed in the upper-left corner with the top grab bar out of reach of the mouse. Before I remove the ~/.gnome* directories, how to restore things?
