Ubuntu Multimedia :: ATI 320M Notebook - Video Doesnot Seem To Be Working Other Than A Basic VESA Configuration
May 5, 2011
I recently took my Compaq Presario 2175US notebook completely apart and resoldered the power jack so that it could be used again (after 2 years of dormancy). After successfully putting it back together (with a handful of leftover screws ) , I was able to successfully install Ubuntu 10.04 (Windows XP seemed silly at this point and I really like using Open Office). Anyway, after a couple of days looking for the wireless driver for the internal wireless, I found the answer and got that working.
Unfortunately, the video does not seem to be working other than a basic VESA configuration. The notebook has the ATI Radeon IGP 320M video chip installed. I have searched for many days (about a week) on the internet for a way to get this working, but have been unsuccessful. Although I have found many posts all over the net (here included) that list folks with similar problems, and having tried many of the "fixes", I am still unsuccessful at getting the video card to work in any more than a minimal manner (no games, no 3D of any kind...etc.)

Does anyone know how I can get xubuntu to boot up using the glint video driver instead of vesa? I am trying to get it loaded on an older machine and a previous version of ubuntu worked using the glint driver but the latest version of xubuntu (10.04) is using the vesa driver. Which is not working for me. I have tried ubuntu, xubuntu and lubuntu all version 10.04 and neither of them has worked. They all boot up into a terminal window (no GUI).
I tried creating an xorg.conf file and added a line specifying the glint driver. After doing that and trying to startxfce4 I get an error saying that it cannot load the glint module. Unfortunately that machine has no internet connection either. I guess it hasn't recognized my wireless card either.

Here goes the problem: I have a Amilo M7400 notebook with an Intel 82852/82855 GME video card, and X is a bit uncompatible with it.I've tried using the vesa driver in the xorg.conf, but when i start Xserver, it hangs hard in a blank screen. I can't open a new terminal and control+alt+backspace won't work.
what can i do? is there a log file for X which details the initialization of it?

How to enable native screen resolution in X using VESA driver? I have IBM/Lenovo ThinkPad T61 with a native screen resolution of 1680x1050, but I am getting 1024x768 instead.
This is a fresh install of Debian 8.3 (latest stable) (Jessie).
The root cause of this is that nouveau graphics driver (which I was using before) was causing me kernel crashes. Full story here: [URL] .....

I have a digital camcorder, an analog camcorder, and a set top dvr.
I want to get video and audio material from them onto my notebook (i.e. I don't have any PCI slots, etc. to plug a video capture card into).
My notebook runs kubuntu karmic Linux with Windows XP (in a VM).
It has USB 2.0, firewire, PCI card, and Express Card interfaces.
I am looking for any reasonable way to do this.
All three devices have composite video out and left and right audio out RCA jacks. The digital camcorder also has USB and firewire ports, but didn't come with any software (and AFAIK the software has long since become unavailable).
Plugging the digital camcorder into my notebook via USB or firewire cables didn't do much of anything in either Windows or Linux.
Awhile ago, I bought the Hauppauge USB-Live 2 video capture device (it's a smart cable that's supposed to convert from the RCA plugs to USB), but had no luck getting it to work in my XP vm and very limited results under Linux - with a lot of help from a fellow lug member.
Under Linux, I tried using polaris.
[url]
At this point, I just want to get the job done any way I can, but since the devices are still in use, it's not a one-shot deal, so I need a solution that will continue to work. I'd prefer it in Linux (where it would also have access to more computing power), but XP would be fine too. If I need a different interface/converter, I will buy one if it's not too expensive.
Soon, I will also have access to my partner's new notebook, but haven't reconfigured it yet. When I do, it will be running kubuntu lucid with Windows 7 in a VM.

I have an Asus z9100 laptop with an Intel 855GM integrated graphics chip, which is running Karmic (the purpose of the laptop is to be a MythTV frontend so my understanding is that it needs to run 9.x in order to connect to the MythTV 0.22 backend - I have installed and configured this using the installable Mythbuntu package) and the laptop is subject to this bug which causes random freezes:
[URL]
So, following advice for similar freezes I've seen, I have added the following options to my grub menu.lst on the kernel line:
nolapic nomodeset
and I have edited xorg.conf so that it makes use of the vesa driver instead of the Intel driver. This results in no freezes and if I wanted to watch Myth on the laptop screen I'd be squared away. However, the laptop has a damaged screen so the point was always to output the signal to an external monitor via its VGA out.
When I attach the external monitor and boot with the setup as described, the external monitor is never detected. But I noticed that if I remove the "nolapic nomodeset" from the kernel boot line, it is detected. However, signal is only output to it during the earliest part of boot (when the Ubuntu logo is in the center of the screen before the full-screen graphic with the animated progress line), after which the external monitor goes black and all the display output goes to the laptop screen. The external monitor power button is still lit up green as if it has been detected and is receiving signal, but it's just a black screen.
get the signal out to the external monitor after the initial part of the boot process, using the vesa driver? Here is the current state of my xorg.conf:
Code:
Section "Device"
Identifier "Configured Video Device"
Driver "vesa"
EndSection

When you put in the Fedora disk, it has an option "Install system with basic video driver". What does that mean? If I am not going to download a video driver, is that the better choice?

I have this Asus UL30VT notebook, with two video cards, an Nvidia G210M (which apparently isn't supported by Nvidia for Linux, but I've read somewhere that it's possible to make it work) and an Intel card (I can't find the model name). On Windows, it is possible to switch between these two cards for battery saving reasons. Anyway, I don't really care about this on Linux. I would just like to make the Nvidia card work somehow.
One of my doubts is: how do I know if Linux is detecting both video cards? What I'd like to know is, how can I make sure whether Linux is correctly detecting the Nvidia card or not? Is lspci enough? And if we suppose that Linux is aware of the presence of the Nvidia card, how do I know which card it's using? Right now I can infer it's using the Intel card from the X log, but is there any other way (I don't know, any "/proc/..." files) to know?

I am looking for a generic vesa driver xorg.conf file that will work with most any 1024x768 monitor.
This is for a network appliance and our field people have many different type of monitors.
This product will mostly be used "headless" but sometimes our field people will plug in a monitor.
The intel driver will not even start x without a monitor plugged in so I found it necessary to go to the vesa driver.

I decided to try Ubuntu 10.10 after I had enough audio driver errors on my Acer netbook ( it came with windows wtf why errors) to drive me crazy. Anyway since I installed Ubuntu its ran better then when it was new my question arises here tho. I need to do some basic video editing (combine a few avi files, add transitions, add effects, etc) I don't need some end all to do all editor. just something basic like the windows. Video editor thingy was. So far I've tried pitivi which crashes, open soft which also seems to dislike me, and kdenlive which shows some promise but seems to be slow and needs libmp3lame.
I tried to install it and while my software manager thing says its installed kden says its not. I wanted to try lives editor but my terminal abilities are almost non-existent. Is there an editor I haven't tried that could be what I'm looking for? Is there a way to fix kden? I just want to edit the video and put it on Facebook. I'm willing to learn and I'm not a computer idiot just a Linux one. I really don't want go back to windows cause ill have to reinstall it and even when I do that with the disc Acer sent me windows makes a screeching noise even when then sound is off and locks up.

I have a problem during installation of openSuse 11.3 on my brand new notebook. It's an hp8440p with Arrandale integrated graphic controller. The initial install works then as soon as the notebook reboots to complete the install and allow me to log in for the first time, there's no video. If I shut the notebook down and boot into failsafe mode the video works. I shut down again and come back up as a normal boot and no video again.
And what's the difference between normal and failsafe?I ran glxgears and had 3d accel in failsafe..

One of the first issues I struggled with after installing CentOS 5 was that my screen would not come back to me after closing my laptop lid. Note that this is in a command line interface (not GNOME). After unsuccessful searching on the web I stumbled upon this configuration file (/etc/acpi/events/video.conf):
# Configuration to turn on DPMS again on video activity, needed for some
# laptops. Disabled by default, uncomment if your laptop display stays blank
# after you close and open the lid.

The top row of keys on my notebook are currently assigned to various media functions (brightness, volume, play, stop, etc.) These keys are rarely used, and it would be better if they were assigned to the function keys (f1,f2,f3,...) by default, rather then using the fn key to access them. Locking the fn key down is not an option. What can I do?

I can't seem to figure out how to get the S-Video output working on my T41, and most of the info that I seem to be finding is for older versions before xrandr so files and settings don't seem to match.
I know that it's not a hardware/cable problem because this exact setup works fine under windows (even though there i'm working with a hacked video driver setup since one doesn't exist for any of the "modern" versions of windows, ati radeon 7500 (mobile))

I killed windows and jumped to Ubuntu after thinking about it. I know windows systems very well and been on the PC starting in the DOS age.
First off. I think I have everything going. I had issues with the display and sound. I got the sound working thanks to these forums...but I have "tossed" some code in the command window that I have no clue what it does or if it worked.
I would like to know if my nVIDIA cards are working correctly. My goal is to use WINE or Play On Linux and get World of Warcraft up and going... along with MS OFFICE 2010.
Im still learning the system and where what is so please go slow. What Do I need to do to get system information for help? ANd to check to make sure drivers are loaded and working?

I have a movie CD which works on windows but not on ubuntu. It has vcdplay.exe. (Probably that is the reason it doesn't work on ubuntu) I tried with wine roxio. Doesn't work. I have tried with xine, gxine, vlc and movie player. Inside the vcd, it has an mpegv folder. Inside the mpegv folder there is file avesq.dat. I tried copying it on to desktop, but it wont copy properly and I can't rename the file to just avesq instead of avesq.dat.Any idea how can we make such an auto run CD work on ubuntu?

Do I have to do a basic configuration / initialization of mysql, like described in the following link, before I can use it? [URL] The background is, that I want to use mythtv and therefore I need a working mysql. When I tried to create the needed database, as described in the file README.SLACKWARE (included in mythtv.Slackbuild package from slackbuilds.org) with the following command, I got an error:
# mysql -u root -p < /usr/share/mythtv/database/mc.sql
The error message was:
ERROR 1146 (42S02) at line 3: Table 'mysql.servers' doesn't exist

I don't remember that I ever did a basic configuration but mysql was already used by joomla, and it worked right out of the box.

It all works but after about 4 - 5 mins of video it needs to buffer. Is there anything I can do when encoding them to help? or is there some kind of video staging server that can be used?
