Ubuntu Installation :: Converting Systempartition From Dynamic To Basic?

From a friend I received a cdrom with Ubuntu 8.10 and recently I tried to install it on my laptop. The installation failed and moreover the volumetypes of the partitions, including the system partition, on my disc have been changed from "basic" to "dynamic" which is very annoying because now I cannot restore my backup. I have now spend a couple of days trying to restore my disc back to its original state but to no avail. Can anyone tell me how to change the volumetype of the systempartition (which cannot be deleted !!!) from "dynamic" back to "basic". My PC is a Dell Vostro 1720 with Windows 7.

I using an old 1999 PC 512 MB RAM used to have W-2000. I had difficulties getting CD to be boot drive. I had to remove floppy drive to stop it from being the first drive. I'm using the Linux Starter Kit with Ubantu Live 9.10. My PC was having issues so I skipped the dual boot and went straight to a clean install. I had to double click on WUBI in the disk directory to get the install started. Install appeared to be going fine about 60%... then I got distracted to fix lunch for sick kid. When I came back screen was black and I could not wake up screen with mouse or keyboard. I turned off PC.. restarted and have message that says NO ROM BASIC System Halted.

I installed Mint 8 on my sister's laptop (after her existing Vista, and I did so on a separate partition created during the normal setup process in Gparted) and she now wants to try out another distro and take off Mint, so how would I go about this? Would I boot from the distro's live CD, determine the correct partition, (I'm thinking of Gparted here) and then... what?
- Would I have to mark the partition to be deleted, delete it, then ask it to install on a similar-sized partition?
- Or would I not delete it, just mark to format it as ext4 or some other file system and it would then just install the OS of that live CD over the existing partition?
- What about the swap partition - does that need any changes at all?
- Will Grub/Grub2 et al normally be updated to reflect the replaced OS?
- I may do this on my own desktop machine in the future: I may want to consolidate all my existing partitions into one easy to manage massive partition. Is this also easy to do?
- How can I determine which OSs are on which partitions?

First of all I am a long time Fedora user and now I need help getting it on my laptop. It has Windows 7 loaded (no Windows cd) and a 500GB dynamic disk. I shrunk and re-partitioned but Linux can't see the partition I made for it. I want to save Windows and had this brainwave lol. I was wondering if I could copy c:*.* to a USB drive; delete partitions and re-partition with basic partitions. Then install Linux on say the third partition; then using Linux copy Windows files from the USB onto the new C partition. Then using my Recover dvd's repair Windows. Great idea right? But I bet it won't work; any thoughts?

Let me preface, assuming your wireless card works with gnome, doing an install from scratch, what packages do you need to get wireless working? So far I've installed gnome-core, menu, menu-xdg and gdm. network-manager and network-manager-gnome are both now installed, I can setup stuff in network connections, but can't see the nm-applet in the notification area, and it never seems to try to connect to my wireless network, do I need any specific other packages (wireless works fine if I install the entire ubuntu 10.04 live CD).

I've been playing around with various distributions including Arch Linux, openSuse, and Ubuntu with it's derivatives. So far, I feel that Ubuntu flows the best out of them all, offering the best mix of user-friendliness, eye-candy, and performance. HOWEVER, I really like doing things from the ground up and like having complete control over what I am using/spending resources on. OpenSuse was very attractive to me because of it's [URL]... which allows you to start with a basic system and add, manually, each and every package you want so you get exactly what you want. Does Ubuntu offer any system like this? Or, alternately, is there a "barebone" download in which you get basically a command line with networking and can apt-get all of the packages you want?

I recently upgraded my hardware and installed 32-bit Karmic (well really Mint 8 ) before realizing I would probably have gotten better performance from the amd64 architecture. Is it possible to convert an i386 system to amd64? Is it a good idea? Will there be a lot of problems afterwards? Is it easier to just backup home and etc, install a clean 64-bit system, then restore settings from backup? If I do convert the system, how do I do it? I thought I might be able to just install a different kernel but I can't find an amd64 kernel in the repositories..

I have a two Hard disk one of which is 160GB & other is 500GB. In 160GB HD I had installed fedora 13 & in 500GB Windows 7. There was my unluck that the whole of partion of 500GB were convered into dynamic disk so that i was unable to access other partion of 500GB HD. i searched for that but ultimately i was unsuccessful. Now I decide to format the C: drive (of 500GB HD).C: drive was 80GB size and there was a system information partition of 100MB created on windows seven installation.Now on installation of fedora 14 in 500GB (at partition 80GB + 100MB) i am unble to access other D: & e: drive. In Disk utility of fedora it is showing 414GB free.

I updated Lucid yesterday, and when I restarted the user interface was changed to a more simple feeling display. This makes me think I'm stuck in a "basic" mode or something. I attached a screen shot, but to give you an idea ill describe some issues. For one thing the minimize buttons are now on the right. The volume control, which used to appear on the top right of the screen, is gone and my multimedia volume control buttons on my Inspiron 1420 no longer work. Furthermore, the command terminal is now white and the keyboard shortcuts for copy and past don't work.
Immediately after updating I also got an error message at login (which also appears different and gives options on bottom of screen like gnome Failsafe) which said something like "gnome default power management installed incorrectly...". I followed the advice of a forum thread that involved the purge command and that seemed to remedy that message.

I upgraded F10 to F11 successfully.
Then I convert the / partition filesystem by the following steps:login as root user in multi user mode read [url], and execute tune2fs -O extents,uninit_bg,dir_index /dev/mapper/VolGroup01-LogVol00 modify /etc/fstab, change the type of / to ext4
reboot
(because fsck say running it on a mounted filesystem can cause filesystem damage, so i decide to reboot to single user mode first. maybe it's a mistake here) try to boot F11 to single user mode, failed
reboot from a SystemRescueCD-1.2.0 LiveCD
run e2fsck -fpDC0 /dev/mapper/VolGroup01-LogVol00 in SystemRescueCD-1.2.0 LiveCD, no error reported
reboot
try to boot F11 normally(multi user mode), but it failed at: EXT3-fs: dm-0: couldn't mount because of unsupported optional features (40).
I tried rescue mode of Fedora-11-i386-netinst.iso after these steps above. The / partition can be found and mounted to /mnt/sysimage correctly. I can read/write files in / partition, and i can even yum new softwares in rescue mode, but it just can't be mounted when booting.

I am trying a new install of opensuse 11.2 64 on my computer. I have tried all the F key options at the bottom of the installation screen but when loading the installation hangs at "Loading basic drivers..."I get the same issue with the 32 bit version of 11.2 and the 64 bit version of 11.1.The 32bit of 11.1 proceeds to install only to crash out with error 3030 when it tries to format an lvm parition.

I've not used Fedora since 2007, the last time I tried an install it merged all my existing partitions into one LVM group.
Is the normal behaviour of Fedora to convert all partitions into one Physical Volume?
Is yes, is there a way to disable this during install?
I prefer to manage my partitions individually.

Is there any way to change Dynamic IP on Linux ? as smeagol271006 mentioned in his thread , we have to disable avahi daemon to get this above code to work properly. dhcpcd trick worked like a charm for me but i have 2 major problem.
problem 1. I always get the same dynamic ip. I need to change dhcpcd -r IP by hand to get a new dyn IP.
problem 2. since i disabled avahi and network manager , i can no longer use DHCP feature . I have no choice but to enter dhcpcd code snippet manually to assign a dynamic IP for every system restart. Is there any clean way to get a new dynamic IP without using dhcpcd ?

i would like to know if there is anything like this out there or in development and if not i think there should be. i feel that one of the areas that ubuntu still lacks majorly is when it comes to handling multi display.most people these days are using notebooks and are moving around a lot, and if your like me working as a software dev you need to be able to work from home running a different external display next to your internal, then when you get to work you need to maybe run two external displays or maybe a totally different display next to your internal, sometimes you'll need to connect to a projector in a meeting and do a demo.
At the moment, there is no easy way to do this unless you have a half an hour everytime to configure your displays manually,which goes without saying that its not quite what anybody is looking for.i'm looking for something that works similar to OSX's display manager.where you plug in a screen and poof, its there. and then mayb you can configure what your system should do when that specific monitor is plugged in and it will remember that configuration. so for instance you have a internal 15" with a res of 1440x960 then you want to plug in your 1080p 24", so boom it picks it up but its not configured yet.so it jus mirrors by default, then you decide ok, when this screen is pluggd in, i want it to extend my desktop onto it, and make it the primary monitor. ok cool so its set,so now when you plug it out, your system detects that your display setup has changed, then does a recheck of your active displays, and sets up the appropriate configuration, in this case only the internal is available so it will just go back to the internal, setting it back as the primary and moving all the windows that was on the external back to the internal.i think this would be a invaluable feature for a mobile professional.

I've read some guides on how to setup ssh with dynamic DNS, but can't seem to get it to work. My Linksys router is currently set to forward port 22, so I don't know why SSH still gives:
ssh admin@xxx.hopto.org ssh: connect to host xxx.hopto.org port 22: Connection refused In particular, I also have openssh-server running on the target machine. Given that I have port forwarding enabled, why would this be happening? If I try to login directly to the IP, I get the same refusal.

I need to obtain daily dynamic IP address from my router for remote user. In order to get into the router page, I need to login to it with ID and password.
Can I tell the server to do this every time it started up to login to router and extract the ip address and send out via email?
