I use a dial up broadband so i have to dial usin PPPoe top connect to internet. so when I'm using wireless modem I have to first make sure that the wifi is established and then run PPPoe. i configured the wireless eth1 thru iwconfig with difficulty as it getting the SSID and the key phrase updated to the settings only when i run the command twice.
Ok got connected to the internet and yes my work i dopne i shutdown or restart my system for somereason and here the problem starts , all the configuration done to the iwconfig eth1 is gone again my eth1 is a default one with no SSID. and i thought the problem is da hardware switch ,but NO it was not my eth1 is always ON

Feb 5, 2011I installed Sysinfo 0.7, unfortunately I set 'Section to start in' to System. As some of you probably already know, and I didn't, is that there's a bug in Sysinfo, that crashes the app, when System is selected[URL]... What this means, is that I can't run Sysinfo anymore, because it crashes on startup. Starting it as superuser works, but since I use Gnome Do, I would like to launch it w/o having to go through the terminal.
What I've tried: Did a complete removal from Synaptics, thinking this would delete settings as well. It didn't. Ran locate sysinfo from terminal, looking for a settings file. no luck
My question (finally): How to I delete og change the current settings in Sysinfo for my user?
Ubuntu :: Way To Reset 11.04 To Default Settings?
May 3, 2011I recently installed the new 11.04 release and was messing around with the Compiz settings on Ubuntu Classic. I tried logging on to regular Ubuntu and everything crashed. When I start up there is no log in screen, only text shows. (I enter my log in information then type 'startx' in the terminal to show my desktop.)
The desktop shows a messed up version of my custom configuration with Cairo-Dock all weird and everything in the wrong place. Also my custom start-up screen that I installed is distorted, and the GRUB screen shows up in purple.
If there was a way to reset Ubuntu 11.04 to the default settings? I tried typing 'unity --reset' in the terminal but it gets stuck at the line 'Setting Update "fullscreen_visual_bell"'.
Ubuntu :: Compiz Settings Are Reset Every Session?
Oct 9, 2010Since a while ago, any changes I make to my Compiz settings are not remembered when I log in again.
On starting a new gnome session, Compiz is firstly always disabled ("Visual Effects" in gnome-appearance-properties is set to "None"). I can enable the "Extra" option, but when I open gnome-appearance-properties a second time, the option is not selected (although Compiz will now be running), and when I log out and back in, Compiz will be disabled again.
After enabling it manually, I find that secondly, the "Desktop Cube" largedesktop feature is replaced by "Desktop Wall". I can change this in ccsm, and the changes take effect immediately, but when I start ccsm a second time, the changes are gone (the "Desktop Cube" checkbox is unselected). After logging out and back in, the old settings are in effect again.
Since ccsm will forget the changes even before I log out, I suspect it is somehow unable to save them. I've tried looking at the stderr output of gnome-appearance-properties and ccsm, but haven't seen anything that looks relevant.

However, I'm using KDE now for stability, as neither gnome nor unity will run well.

Ubuntu :: Docky Settings And Position Reset Every Time Login?
Jan 27, 2011I love docky but i have a really annoying problem.
Every time I login to my account, all my previously settings on Docky are gone. I move Docky to right, add some docklets and change some setings like Panel mode, etc.
But when I shutdown my computer, next time I login I see Docky in it's default setting again!
note: In the current session when I `killall docky` and `docky` again, it works fine and reload my previous settings. The problem happens on Logout/Login.
I run Ubuntu 10.04 on a Dell amd64 Laptop with 1.7x2 CPU and 2.3GB of RAM.

May 20, 2011I had a machine with 11.3, and tested 11.4 live CD. It looked good, network worked and so did compiz. But then I installed, and I can't see any wireless networks, the screen flickers and compis doesn't work. Is there any way to simple reset all settings so that they become the live-cd settings?

Sep 3, 2015I'm a relatively new Debian user, having come from Ubuntu. I recently bought a Dell micro-server to function as my Kodi media player. I installed an nVidia GeForce 210 to output to my Pioneer home theatre amplifier. The amp takes all my inputs (eg. Satellite set-top decoder, PS3, Kodi etc) and outputs to the TV. I installed XFCE as my desktop environment so that I could still interact with it via VNC.
Everything is working great except for one exceptionally annoying problem! Every day, I find that I am having to VNC into the desktop, load up nVidia X Settings, and change my screen resolution from Auto to 1920x1080 because it has lost the display configuration and the screen is blank. I presume this happens when the amplifier switches from one input to the next. It doesn't matter if I save the configuration to my X11.conf file or not - it still resets itself.
Before, this setup would run for months without any intervention (Same amplifier + HP microserver + Ubuntu + LXDE + ATI video card), so I'm pretty confident that the issue is either Debian, XFCE, or the nVidia card.

Dec 11, 2010Is it possible "reset" all (X, GDM related) permissions/settings of one user? What would cause one specific user not to be able to log into anything via gdm/the login screen? After providing the proper password, the screen goes black and then jumps back to the login screen. No session alternative works, not even xterm or gnome failsafe. I can however log in via the console (Ctrl+Alt+F6, recovery etc). With another user I can log in via GDM just fine, and deleting and re-adding the "broken" user doesn't make any difference.

When I select it the shell exits and displays the graphic "exploding" and then it just sits there. Shutdown works fine; just no reset. Any ideas? I've installed from the DVD. May 12, 2010I using an old 1999 PC 512 MB RAM used to have W-2000. I had difficulties getting CD to be boot drive. I had to remove floppy drive to stop it from being the first drive. I'm using the Linux Starter Kit with Ubantu Live 9.10. My PC was having issues so I skipped the dual boot and went straight to a clean install. I had to double click on WUBI in the disk directory to get the install started. Install appeared to be going fine about 60%... then I got distracted to fix lunch for sick kid. When I came back screen was black and I could not wake up screen with mouse or keyboard. I turned off PC.. restarted and have message that says NO ROM BASIC System Halted.

Apr 15, 2010I installed Mint 8 on my sister's laptop (after her existing Vista, and I did so on a separate partition created during the normal setup process in Gparted) and she now wants to try out another distro and take off Mint, so how would I go about this? Would I boot from the distro's live CD, determine the correct partition, (I'm thinking of Gparted here) and then... what?
- Would I have to mark the partition to be deleted, delete it, then ask it to install on a similar-sized partition?
- Or would I not delete it, just mark to format it as ext4 or some other file system and it would then just install the OS of that live CD over the existing partition?
- What about the swap partition - does that need any changes at all?
- Will Grub/Grub2 et al normally be updated to reflect the replaced OS?
- I may do this on my own desktop machine in the future: I may want to consolidate all my existing partitions into one easy to manage massive partition. Is this also easy to do?
- How can I determine which OSs are on which partitions?
Ubuntu Installation :: Converting Systempartition From Dynamic To Basic?
Nov 23, 2010From a friend I received a cdrom with Ubuntu 8.10 and recently I tried to install it on my laptop. The installation failed and moreover the volumetypes of the partitions, including the system partition, on my disc have been changed from "basic" to "dynamic" which is very annoying because now I cannot restore my backup. I have now spend a couple of days trying to restore my disc back to its original state but to no avail. Can anyone tell me how to change the volumetype of the systempartition (which cannot be deleted !!!) from "dynamic" back to "basic". My PC is a Dell Vostro 1720 with Windows 7.
