Ubuntu Installation :: Wired And Wireless Not Working From Live CD

Jul 1, 2010

Running 10.4 only on this desktop. Did some upgrades this morning and now it only boots to the grub> prompt. So I went into the Live CD and am trying to reinstall/update grub from the terminal in the live cd however I can't get an internet connection. My DLink G122 isn't recognized (no lights) so I tried hardwiring the ethernet and eth0 is there but it fails to connect. I installed the Broadcom driver but now when I click on Hardware Drivers I only see a display driver listed.

Ubuntu Networking :: Wired / Wireless Not Working

Aug 9, 2010

I dualboot Win7 and Ubuntu 10.04 for quite a long time now with no problems.... but now wireless works perfect on Win7, but I can't even connect Ubuntu with a direct wired connection.... ubuntu connects to the actual Linksys Wireless router just fine, but just won't take the internet, and I've tried two different Wireless cards.this all started (I dunno if its relevant or not) when I put in a new TV tuner, which I obviously took out right away. But the problem is still there. I don't think its the card, I'm pretty sure its just some kind of setting that I've messed up or something because when I connect to the network its near 100%.

Ubuntu Networking :: SSL Does Not Work - Wired Is Not Working - Wireless Does

Jul 24, 2010

Everything seems to be fine while she is connected via Wireless. When she plugs in the wired connection a problem occurs, it seems that every SSL Site and/or encrypted Website cannot be shown on her Notebook, for example shopping at Amazon.com. The Problem does not persist the whole time, sometimes it works for a few seconds and you are able to fill your cart.

Other Informations: The Connection has been tested with Windows 7 and with Ubuntu (USB-Live-Stick Lucid)... no difference.

Is it possible that her Hardware is not running correctly? What should we do next?

Tomorrow we want to reset the computer to factory default status.

Are there any possibilities of testing a SSL Connection using the Terminal?

Ubuntu Networking :: Wired/wireless Internet Not Working?

I'm running Windows 7 and Xubuntu 10.10 on a dell pc. My wireless works fine when I run windows 7, but on Xubuntu, the wireless doesn't even come as an option. When I try to plug in the wired connection, it loads for about a minute then tells me I'm disconnect. The option for the wired connection is there, but when I try to click it, the same thing happens. What do I do?

Ubuntu Networking :: Wired Network Stopped Working / Wireless OK

Sep 21, 2010

I'm not a total newbie, but run into some strange problems with my installation of Lucid.Everything was working fine yesterday. I shut down the laptop and powered it up this morning and had problems with network. I have two NICs (wired and wireless). Both are set to pick up IP settings from DHCP and both do, however when using wired network I can't communicate with outside world - can't even ping the default gateway (but pinging 127.0.0.1 or IP address of the NIC no problem, so stack should be OK).When on the wireless network everything works fine (otherwise I would struggle to write this post ).What is very weird though is that I have a VMWare Player installed and using Windows VM on wired network works just great!

I noticed that when you're persistent it happens that you can ping but huge chunks of traffic are lost (e.g. packet 1-10 would pass, 11-40 would be lost, 41-59 would pass and so on).I restarted Ubuntu, tried shutting down interfaces, disabling networking and nothing helped. I don't recall performing any changes (at least that I would be aware of).Can anyone suggest something?BTW. This is not DNS issue as both IP addresses and FQDNs do not work. When I refer to using a given network (wired or wireless) the other one is down with ifconfig command...

Ubuntu Networking :: Wired / Wireless Network Cards Not Working

Nov 30, 2010

I'm new to Ubuntu - I've decided to give Ubuntu Studio a go as an alternative to Windows. However, after installing it, neither of my network cards work. I have a Intel Pro Wireless 3945ABG wireless card, and a Broadcom Netlink Gigabit Wired card. Neither work, And I'm not sure how to. I've tried searching, and have come up with the .tgz file here, but I have no idea what to do with it I'm concentrating on the wireless card for the moment, seeing as that will be the main one I use.

Ubuntu Networking :: Last Ditch Effort To Get Wired/Wireless Working?

Jan 26, 2011

I posted here a couple weeks ago about my wireless issues and someone suggested I download an update of firmware for my Broadcom wireless card. The problem is I can't even connect to the Internet with a wired/Auto Ethernet connection in order to download said firmware. I tried downloading it on a different computer then using a flash drive to transfer it, but when I opened it on my computer, a message popped up saying the files were corrupted (this happens every time I try to install any program/update from a flash drive). So I tried today to use the wired connection to download the firmware but a) it wouldn't recognize the connection, so I deleted the AutoEthernet connection, rebooted, and activated the new one, as per the solution I'd read in a different thread on the forums. The wired connection worked, but only intermittently--it disconnects about every minute or so--and even when I'm connected, Firefox won't load any pages so I still can't get the update I need for my card.

I feel like I'm out of options here--I've been having this problem for about 7 months and I, or my much more Linux-savvy acquaintance, have not been able to figure out the problem. I'm thinking the only solution at this point is to go back to running Windows, which I really don't want to have to do.

Networking :: Keep Wired Connection Working While Reconnection Wireless

Nov 9, 2010

I'm using Archlinux with NetworkManager to connect to the internet. When I'm in my room, I've an ethernet cable and still receive the wireless signal.Sometimes (like when we have a power cut, somebody is rebooting the router or simply something wrong with the provider), I'm disconnected during a few seconds, NetworkManager ask me again the password of the wireless (even if it remembers it), and then I'm ok.But when I'm not in front of my computer, while I haven't push the button "ok", it doesn't connect, even with the wired connection. That's not very normal in my opinion as there is supposed to have two different and independent connection. No ?

I intent to install an ssh server on my computer but if I cannot access it every time there is a problem that won't be very useful.

Ubuntu Networking :: Neither Wired Nor Wireless Working Dell Inspiron 1545

Jul 27, 2011

I just installed Ubuntu 10.04.1 on my Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop, but I can't connected to the Internet with a wired or wireless connection. I have a BT Home Hub 2 wireless router. I can connect to the Internet when running Windows Vista, but not with Ubuntu.

I tried installing the Broadcom STA driver off of the live disk, which initially seemed to work. However, I still couldn't connect to the Internet and when I clicked on System > Administration > Hardware Drivers, there weren't any proprietary drivers to install or that had been installed. Also, when I reboot, Ubuntu tries to connect to my network automatically but always fails. That's what makes me think that a driver has been installed, but just isn't the right one or isn't working.

Ubuntu Installation :: 11.04 Live CD And Live Stick Not Working

Apr 28, 2011

Live CD: I dowloaded the ISO, burned it to CD, booted from this CD. It starts to load and I can see the purple background with the loading icons. Everything seems normal. But instead of ending up with the login screen, it ends up with a screen that says 'Please remove all bootup media and hit ENTER' or something like this. So I hit enter and then it shuts off my computer. That's it.

Live Stick: So I tried another option and created a stick with 'usb-creator.exe' that is on the CD. Then I start from that stick, but all I end up is a line of 'Syslinux bla bla copyright 20xx-2011'. That's it. Then it does nothing anymore. The cursor is blinking, but no prompt or whatsoever and keyboard input doesn't do anything.

Now something weird: When I insert Live CD and Live Stick at the same time and then boot my computer, then it boots into Ubuntu. Obviously it loads the first parts from CD and then the rest from stick. Because when I'm then in Ubuntu and try to format the stick, it says it can't do so, because there's system files from that stick in use.

Wireless works on both. reading the Ubuntu manual pages it seems that there is a driver problem, I need nfe driver. The explanation on how to add the driver talked about a loader.conf file. I think that was replaced in 10.04 grub2 with the /etc/grub.d/40_custom file.My question is if I add "if_nfe_load="YES" to the /etc/grub.d/40_custom file will it load the necessary driver?

Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Get Internet Connection Of Any Kind / Wired Or Wireless

Oct 11, 2010

I've just updated my Dell Inspiron Mini to Maverick Meerkat (10.10), and I've very quickly run into quite a few problems. First, it took an awful long time to install all of the updates. Is that normal? Perhaps it's just because I'm using a puny netbook?

When the updates were finished and I rebooted, I logged in without any problems, but then got a gray screen. I've seen that screen before, when Ubuntu loads (especially with Lucid), but it doesn't go away. I rebooted using Desktop Edition instead of Netbook Edition, and there was an improvement, but the top toolbar is blank.Additionally, and most importantly, I can't get an Internet connection of any kind, wired or wireless.

Ubuntu Networking :: Dell 1397 Wireless Card Not Working With Live USB

Mar 9, 2010

I have a Dell Inspiron 1545 running Windows 7 64-bit. It has a Dell 1397 Wireless card with Broadcom BCM 4312 hardware. This is proven by running lspci in Terminal. I downloaded Ubuntu 9.10 64-bit and burned a disc of it. I used System>Administration>USB Startup Disc Creator to make a Live USB from a 4GB flash drive. I plugged it in and my computer booted into Ubuntu with no trouble. The only problem is that I can't connect to my wireless network. The problem is that no matter how I install the Broadcom STA driver, it just says that the driver is activated but not actively in use. I've used Synaptic Package Manager, Jockey, and even Terminal. I've tried running
Code: sudo modprobe wl
in Terminal, but nothing seems to happen. In Ubuntu, my computer acts as though it has no wireless card, but the wired connection is fine (except for the inconvenience of connecting with a cable). In Windows 7, the wireless connection is fine.

Ubuntu Installation :: No Wireless In Live CD?

Oct 17, 2010

I want to upgrade the installation of Ubuntu on my laptop. However since I prefer a clean install I made a bootable USB with the 10.10 64 bit edition on it.

I can Boot from the USB fine but then it tries to connect to the wireless, it sees it's WPA secured asks for the password and then it tries for 20 seconds and asks for the password again.

I've checked the password by reentering it in my current 10.04 install and it works fine there, but connecting with the live cd is a no go.

I have a dell 1737 with an intel 1510 half mini card.

Ubuntu Installation :: Live USB Not Working?

Jun 10, 2011

I recently had a problem with the hdd on my netbook. The hdd died and now I need a new one it happens So, I decided to take a plunge into Ubuntu. I was able to run the Live USB with Ubuntu 11.04, bypassing the hdd for about a day and this morning it stopped working. I have tried to reboot using the Live USB and even re-installed the Live USB. The process to load Ubuntu looks like it is stuck at a screen with the ubuntu logo and 5 dots. At first, the 5 dots changed color as the program was loading, now the dots do not change.

Right now, the program does not load up from the Live USB and I am at a loss as to why. Also, if it is possible to save settings from USB session to USB session, how does one accomplish that? I am still very new to Ubuntu so I am a little out of my element. I am trying to install Ubuntu on a HP Mini 210 with 2 GB RAM and a 2 Gb Kingston Datatraveler USB.

Now that won't work either.Just after I upgraded from Jaunty, I accidentally removed NetwMngr from the top right corner of the screen, but that should not have anything to do with how the program works, right? I now cannot reach NM, if I run it from the terminal, nothing happens visibly.

The OS does not even detect that the hardware is present. I have disabled wireless hotkey in BIOS. The only way to make the wireless card "active" is to reboot with the wiredconnection to the router. After doing that the wireless card "wakes up" and works awesome. Is there anything I can do to make sure the driver load at boot?mes I get the error that NDISWrapper is not modprobbed when I go to network configuration and if I wish to do i now? I don't know if that has anything to do with the boot sequence. Using the <modprobe ndiswrapper> command as root does nothing permanant
