Ubuntu Installation :: 11.04 Unity - Sudo Update-grub So Slow

May 3, 2011

Previously on 10.10 "sudo update-grub" took 2-3 seconds.

I upgraded to 11.04 and it now takes 10 - 15 minutes.

Is unity generally much slower than GNOME?

Ubuntu Installation :: 9.10 Upgrade To 10.04. Windows 7 Unbootable / After Using "sudo Update-grub"?

May 9, 2010

My current situation is I have two physical hard disks, one with Windows 7 (sda) and another where I recently installed Ubuntu 9.1 (sdb). At this time there were no issues.

Now after getting used to 9.1 I selected to upgrade to 10.04 from the update manager. During this install I was told I needed to upgrade GRUB which I understand is the bootloader and was told to choose where to install it.Now at this time I had no knowledge of drive naming conventions in Linux and there was no option to cancel the upgrade to look for help, so instead I followed the advice in the help box to simply select every device listed

The result was a fully working Ubuntu installation but at the cost of an unbootable Windows 7.Windows is showing on the GRUB menu but selecting it gives only a blank screen with a flashing cursor and no ability to do anything besides ctrl-alt-delete.

After a few hours of googling solutions including downgrading GRUB, there was no change and it seems that I actually have a version of GRUB on both drives. The one on the windows drive (sda) is the default loaded GRUB that shows Windows 7 but cannot boot it. The second GRUB install on the Ubuntu drive (sdb) is the one I am able to configure through Ubuntu but does not list Windows 7 on its boot list even after using "sudo update-grub"

Ubuntu Installation :: Boot/grub/win7 - Testdisk/update-grub Method, But It Didn't Work?

Mar 4, 2011

I have 2 hard disks. sda,sdb

In sda, I have 4 partitions, and I have windows 7 in one of the extended partitions [not in the primary partition].

In sdb, I have 3 partitions. 2 for storage, and 1 10GB drive for Ubuntu. Again, Ubuntu is not of a primary partition.

I had ubuntu 10.04 running on that for a long time. However, I wanted to reinstall ubuntu and use 10.10.This is what I did EXACTLY:Booted from Ubuntu install CD

Chose advanced istall

Selected sdb3 for Ubuntu

I installed GRUB2 on the SAME partition as Ubuntu aka sdb3 Installed then rebooted

I can boot into Ubuntu fine, but whenever I select Windows 7 bootloader from the GRUB menu, the screen goes black, and my PC reboots.

Boot Info:

Code:
Boot Info Script 0.55 dated February 15th, 2010 [code]....

I have tried the testdisk/update-grub method, but it didn't work.

Ubuntu Security :: Sudo Apt-get Update The Update Failed Because The Connection To The India Mirror Timed Out

Jun 1, 2010

I am from India, and I tried to update my Ubuntu system today. Code: $sudo apt-get update The update failed because the connection to the India mirror timed out: Code: [URL] Could not connect to in.archive.ubuntu.com:80 (111.91.91.37). - connect (110: Connection timed out) I tried the update a few times, with the same result every time.

I had firestarter running at this time, and noticed that I would get new security events every time I tried an update. I checked the events list, and it turned out that the machine at the ip address 111.91.91.37 (the in.archive.ubuntu.com machine, to go by the above error message) had been trying to make connections to seemingly random ports on the machine every time I tried the update: see the attached screenshot. I then changed my repositories to the Main Server using Synaptic, and tried the update again (from the command-line). This time it worked without a hitch, and firestarter did not report any unwanted incoming connection. why is the India mirror trying to open connections that the Main server apparently does not need in order for me to do the update? Should I (we) be concerned?

Ubuntu :: Gksu Not Working - Sudo Slow ?

Jun 29, 2010

I've been having a problem with administrative apps all the way from last years' distros, and in 10.04-x64 it's still here.

When i launch an application that needs gksu, it simply hangs waiting for a gksu window that never shows up.

If i launch another administrative app, it hangs as well.

When i look at the process list, i get a lot of gksu instances, all sleeping.

if i kill those processes, the mentioned apps resume with an authentication error

But if i use a terminal and type sudo <app>, it hangs for a few seconds, then prompts for password and it works fine.

I don't know why it works so badly, but it needs to be fixed soon, many new users will surely find this very frustrating.

I run ubuntu 10.04-64bit on a AMD-Athlon-x2

Fedora :: Sudo Is Slow In F11?

Jul 17, 2009

fter using Ubuntu and finding it way too unstable, Opensuse and finding it bloated, Arch and finding it confusing, I have finally settled on Fedora 11.The problem that I am having is a minor annoyance. I found that my default user couldn't use Sudo, so I added the following to the sudoers file:Quote:USER_NAME ALL=(ALL) ALL -- Where User_Name is the the name of my default user. The problem is that I can now use sudo but it is incredibly slow. For example if I type sudo yum install _____It'll ask me for my password and then pause for a minute or two literally before proceeding. It isn't the network causing this problem because it does the same thing if I issue commands that are specific to files only on my computer. Interestingly enough I don't have this problem if I use tty, only in Konsole.

Ubuntu Installation :: "Error Booting Operating System" - Sudo Grub; Root (hd0.0)...) Doesn't Work

Mar 1, 2011

I installed 10.04 (clean install) on a 250G drive (partitioned to 107G for the system files). It was working fine, until I wanted to install Window$ for the use of Adobe stuff. I popped the Windows XP disc in, it loaded its files, then I tried to choose a partition for installation. There was an error saying that I can't do that, and needed to delete a partition blah blah. I thought it was too much trouble, so I quit and just wanted to use my 10.04. Booted, and it says "Error booting operating system" I WAS SHOCKED.

I tried to install grub (but don't need that right? I DO NOT want to dual boot now), but the usual method ( the sudo grub; root (hd0.0)...) doesn't work ,because something like "stage1" is missing. I tried many methods by still the same error. The reason I do not want a clean install is that I did many fixes on my 10.04 so that it would work with my EeePC 1001pxd, and I do not want to go through that again. I will be checking my email frequently on other computers if I have a chance.

Ubuntu Installation :: Update GRUB On 10.04 Wubi?

May 12, 2010

I had a bad experience with 9.04 - I installed some recommended system updates, and the updated GRUB killed my installation (which is WUBI), not letting me boot.

I've now installed 10.04, and some updates have come through, one of which is GRUB. So I'm now looking at the "Configuring grub-pc" dialogue box that's popped up, and there's an option to "Continue without installing GRUB?".

What are the risks here? Is my 10.04 WUBI system going to die if I upgrade GRUB again? Or is it going to die if I don't upgrade GRUB?

Ubuntu Installation :: Update-grub Not Working?

Jul 22, 2010

I have upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04 but I'm still using Grub1 as I came from 9.04.

Anyway, during the upgrade I kept my original menu.lst file when prompted as I have a Windows XP boot option that I wanted to keep. I have read that this means your kernel won't be updated - and indeed mine wasn't.

The new kernel files (vmlinuz-2.6.32-23-generic) are on my machine in the /boot directory. uname -r currently shows 2.6.31-20-generic.

From what I've read you should just need to run update-grub manually and it will install. However, I have done this but it isn't upgraded. It doesn't modify my menu.lst or anything.

Output for update-grub:

Searching for GRUB installation directory ... found: /boot/grub
Searching for default file ... found: /boot/grub/default
Testing for an existing GRUB menu.lst file ... found: /boot/grub/menu.lst
Searching for splash image ... none found, skipping ...

[Code].....

So it says its updating menu.lst but there is still no entry for 2.6.32-23? Am I missing something?

Ubuntu Installation :: GRUB Is Borked After Last Update?

Sep 7, 2010

Whilst I've been using Ubuntu for years now, I don't really do much at the command-line, basically because I don't *have* to (which, to me is the beauty of this OS!). However, the last update via update manager has rendered my dual-boot with Vista on an Asus laptop non-functioning (at least Linux). What happens is this: after the BIOS splash screen, it says starting GRUB and then, instead of a menu of current and recent Linux versions and the Vista option at the bottom (white text against colour background) it now just shows one line of the menu in magenta... the rest of the menu is black, but the arrow keys will show the other options. Hitting ENTER does nothing: the text line is replaced with a blinking underline which goes back to the text in magenta again when i hit ESC. I can't seem to ESC or SHIFT to GRUB's command-line prompt at all. I've boot to the LiveCD and ran a boot_info_script in bash: here is what that revealed:

Code:

Boot Info Script 0.55 dated February 15th, 2010
============================= Boot Info Summary: ==============================
=> Syslinux is installed in the MBR of /dev/sda
=> Windows is installed in the MBR of /dev/sdb
