I'm trying to update my Ubuntu 10.04 to 10.10... But I get this error message:pkgProblemResolver:Resolve generated breaks, this may be caused by held packages
I tried to disable all the repositories, and also "sudo apt-get -f"... But still having this error message...
I installed 10.04 (clean install) on a 250G drive (partitioned to 107G for the system files). It was working fine, until I wanted to install Window$ for the use of Adobe stuff. I popped the Windows XP disc in, it loaded its files, then I tried to choose a partition for installation. There was an error saying that I can't do that, and needed to delete a partition blah blah. I thought it was too much trouble, so I quit and just wanted to use my 10.04. Booted, and it says "Error booting operating system" I WAS SHOCKED.
I tried to install grub (but don't need that right? I DO NOT want to dual boot now), but the usual method ( the sudo grub; root (hd0.0)...) doesn't work ,because something like "stage1" is missing. I tried many methods by still the same error. The reason I do not want a clean install is that I did many fixes on my 10.04 so that it would work with my EeePC 1001pxd, and I do not want to go through that again. I will be checking my email frequently on other computers if I have a chance.
Code: sudo apt-get update I receive: Code: E: Could not get lock /var/lib/apt/lists/lock - open (11: Resource temporarily unavailable) E: Unable to lock directory /var/lib/apt/lists/ I'm running Umbuntu 10.10 and am quite new to all this
I can't check any update and can press button install Updates. I have this warning message. If I use terminal for update, I have this error (sudo apt-get update): GPG error: [URL] natty Release: The following signatures couldn't be verified because the public key is not available: NO_PUBKEY 638ABCA0FA3A1271
I just got this error message when Update Manager tried updating: Could not initialize the package information An unresolvable problem occurred while initializing the package information.
Please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the following error message: 'E:Type 'sudo' is not known on line 56 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list' I've been using Ubuntu for awhile, so I know my way around some stuff, but I'm completely lost on what to do here.
Recently sudo apt-get update (and all other apt-get commands) has resulted in the error:

I have apt installed, and I don't know of any changes I've made (I booted a Freebsd install dvd but I didn't end up installing (i'm looking at putting it onto an external hdd).

I still seem to be able to install/update from update manager and synaptic, but I rely on command line for apt-get update when I'm not at uni (which runs through a proxy).
When I do 'sudo apt-get update' I get Sources Reading package lists... Error! E: Encountered a section with no Package: header E: Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/mirror.cs.umn.edu_ubuntu_dists_jaunty_universe_bin ary-i386_Packages E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.

I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 along with Windows 7. I tried installing the TOR proxy thing long back, and today when I tried downloading a package it gave me that. Now even if I try updating my system, it says:-
Code:

Can't seem to update apt-get. Can anyone help with this? I've attached a screenshot of the output of
Code: sudo apt-get update After trying this once, I decided to verify that there was an internet connection. I pinged some IP addresses and almost each ping went perfectly. If that can be ruled out, what is the next step?
Cant boot windows or ubuntu Well i have two hard drives, i used wubi on windows (which is on my c: drive) to put ubuntu 10.10 on my d: drive. Everything was running smoothly until the update manager uptated ubuntu. When the installation was completed, i was told to restart. So i did. When it restarted, nothing happened. My computer froze and i cant access windows or ubuntu, and i cant change anything.
On a Xp host I installed last version of VirtualBox and I created a 9.10 Ubuntu 'guest'.While I can surf the net, I cant 'sudo apt-get update' nor do a 'reload' from 'Synaptic Package Manager'.

I have recently updated my Fedora 11 installation which replaced my older 167 kernel with the newer 217 kernel. However, the 217 kernel will not boot completely. It will show the splash loading screen, and then will switch to a rapidly blinking cursor. This cursor blinks for about 5 seconds and then disappears. I can access terminals using ALT+F2, etc. I can log in to these terminals, but init commands do not complete (something about a binary handler). I'm not sure if something is conflicting with an update to X or what is wrong. The most recent kernel that I managed to get to work was Kernel 167, however I cannot find this kernel for download.

I'm with Linux 2.6.32-25-server #44-Ubuntu SMP Fri Sep 17 21:13:39 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux , Ubuntu 10.04 Server And I wanna execute the next script in bash profile code...
Error messege: sudo dpkg configure a' to correct the problem. I used synaptic package manager to install WIne....It stalls on"ttf-mscorefonts-installer (3.0". So, I try update manager and it asked me to restart computer which I do. When I try to re-run synaptic manager I get the above error.
I've installed the Awesome WM using "sudo yum install awesome" (as described here https://awesome.naquadah.org/wiki/Awesome-3-fedora ). I can also log into awesome, but nothing works! I can open the menu on the top left of the screen, but when I click on e.g. "Open Terminal", nothing happens. Same thing for all other menu options except "Shut down" which logs me out of Awesome. I've also tried the terminal shortcut, but nothing works.
I am suddenly not prompted for my password when I run any command as sudo on a few of my Ubuntu servers.
if I run sudo -K, the session is cleared, and I am prompted again for my password, however it saves/caches it until I run sudo -k again even if I log out and back in. I want it to prompt me for my password, as it should (and did) by default, for security.
I'm running into an issue on my fedora installations getting sudo insults to work. I'm fairly new to the distro, but in other distros, I just had to add insults to the Defaults line within visudo. Then I could sudo -K to reset my sudo session and it worked.
Since I installed sudo from yum, I suppose it's possible that insult support is not built into the rpm. I'm sure others got it working and I was hoping not to have to manually compile sudo with insults support as I don't want to break yum for updates/upgrades. If that's the only option, I'm more than happy to go that route, just would like it as a last resort.
I have a problem when I want to use su I get this error:Code:su: pam_start: error 26I have googled it so I found this topic (http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...r-26-a-615024/) but it didn't really help me. There was a reply on that topic and his question was what the output of this was:
