Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrade From 9.10 To 10.04 - Mouse Not Working
Jan 26, 2011
I had an ill-advised upgrade from Ubuntu 9.10 to 10.04 (due to needing to beta-test a particular program). My gut told me that I shouldn't do it, but I went ahead and did it anyway. The problem that makes this worse is that I have an ATI Radeon HD 3650, and ATI hates Linux. So upon booting into 10.04 I ended up with no screen. It took a lot of futzing around in the terminal to get things going (including making an xorg.conf file). Installing the ATI proprietary drivers (Catalyst) was an epic failure. Trying to make "radeon" the driver? Epic failure, resulted in a completely unbootable system.
To at least get the system to boot, I deleted xorg.conf (since 10.04 allegedly will discover devices automatically without it) and played around with options in GRUB. Please see my attached menu.lst; that should be my only configuration. The other issue at this point is that my only working driver (that I can find anyway) is vesa. Unfortunately, when using Vesa, my mouse wants to scroll everything down and to the right. This means that if I open any window that has a scrollbar, it will move such so that the scrollbars are to the other end. This makes it all but impossible to make things work.
To make matters worse, now my WINE (specifically, Irfanview) cannot view GIFs. But at least I have a workaround (FTP) to get things to where I can work on them.) At this point I'd be satisfied if I could just get the mouse to stop messing up. I accidentally made it work at one point but I can't retrace the switches I set to make it so. I've tried setting a basic xorg.conf, an ATI-generated xorg.conf, and now no xorg.conf.

Before I upgraded, I used Ubuntu 9.04 on my Playstation 3. It worked absolutely fine. A couple of days back, I decided to upgrade to ubuntu 9.10 using the update manager. The installation process seemed to go fine, until I booted up the new version. When I booted up, my mouse cursor wouldn't move, whilst my keyboard worked fine, I unplugged and plugged it back in and swapped USB ports, but it came to no use. I reinstalled Jaunty and tried the entire installation process again. After installing the new version again, the same problem occured, my mouse just wouldn't work.
When I type in the command 'uname -a' it comes up with something (I apologize, I am a Linux noob) to do with the 2.6.24 Linux kernel, Ubuntu 9.10 is on the 2.6.31 kernel. Is this the problem? I don't understand what is going on or what the solution is. My mouse is a HP optical mouse if that helps. I can't bring up the terminal window because my mouse just doesn't work, which is really annoying me.

I have tried different mice, but it is the same problem. I dont see any error msgs in any logs I look in. Im thinking my next step is to reinstall, which Im not too excited about.

I have used a quite obscure device called Cideko AK0b [URL] .... for quite some time now and it has worked perfectly for almost 2 years now, both in Wheezy and in Jessie. However since I made an dist-upgrade a while back the mouse has totally stopped working. The system works through wifi - strangely enough - but everything else works. Keyboard and gamepad buttons. The manufacture says the things doesn't work on linux and so far I have proved them wrong.
But now the mouse is just out right dead no matter what I do. Have looked into mouse autosuspend but no avail so far. My suspicion is systemd but that is as good as any guess.
Running 3.14-2-amd64.
This is my dmesg.

Updated to 10.o4 LTS and after the purple screen with Ubuntu 10.04 logo comes up, the log in screen shows but the keyboard and mouse cease to respond. So I am stuck at the log in prompt unable to input the password to continue boot up. PC has no PS/2 connectors available, only has USB ports for USB keyboard + mouse. Boot in recovery mode is possible, and after log in I have a command prompt available.

I just upgraded my 9.10 on my laptop to 10.04. I seems to have gone well except for one annoying problem. when I boot up I get a large X for the mouse pointer instead of the normal arrow. When I start an application it will not go to full screen and there are no close/minimise/maximise options. Nor can I get to the top or bottom menu bars.
I can cure this on a temporary basis by right-clicking on the desktop and changing the visual effects from none to normal. The problem is that it does not stick. Each time I boot up I have to make this change.

I recently tried to upgrade my Dell Latitude C610 from 10.10 to 11.04, but it got kernel panic right in the middle. Now it at least boots, but the mouse doesn't work--only the keyboard does. How do I fix this enough to use the mouse, or how do I operate Gnome with a keyboard?

Running Landmarq Intel Atom DC330 Desktop I have just attempted to upgrade my desktop machine from Kubuntu 10.04 to Kubuntu 10.10. I used KpackageKit to do the upgrade which proceeded smoothly until the install packages phase, which seemed to complete and then repeat. I don't know the detail of what happened as I was out of the room.
The repeat almost completed, but then I got a set of error messages, which basically told me that KpackageKit was unable to install the upgraded packages. I closed KpackageKit, and closed the machine and tried a reboot. This time, I got as far as the splash screen, but although the cursor flashes, I can't type anything in the password box. In addition, the mouse pointer won't move. Using a different wireless mouse works, but I still can't type in a password.
However, the command ctrl+alt+sysrq+RSEIUB works, so the machine is accepting some keyboard input. I also know from using a live disc that my home directory is intact. I would like to revert to my 10.04 installation, and re-try an upgrade to 10.11 afterwards.

After I have upgraded from 10.10 to 11.4 I have a very strange problem. My desktop seems to be unresponsitve to mouse right or left clicks. The file browser only starts if I use thunar. Nautilus will not run at all. I am not sure if they are tied together but everytime I reboot i get the error message the file browser is still open. If my iphone is plugged in i get a metacity error. I am booting into classic with no effects. I can work kinda but mostly starting everything from inside a terminal. Also Nautilus only will run if I start it under sudo...

I'm brand new to Ubuntu (or any flavor of Unix/Linux, for that matter). I installed it (9.10) into a VM in Hyper-V with aplomb. However, the mouse isn't working, so I'm getting good at using the keyboard shortcuts right off the bat.Anyhoo, I'd like to get the mouse working. I downloaded Hyper-V for Linux 1.0 (integration components), but I can't seem to get it installed. I attach to the ISO from my VM and the CD shows up in Ubuntu, but then what? I tried running the setup.pl file, but nothing seemed to happen and my mouse still isn't working.

my mouse wouldn't work in any fashion after going through most of the install process from Debian Lenny to Squeeze (couldn't click, move the mouse, etc. under both Compiz and Metacity). My system is a Lenovo ThinkPad T61 laptop; I keep the touchpad disabled, but the button mouse (TrackPoint) wouldn't work either. I was following the instructions here:
[URL]
So, the first thing I did was run the following commands, as it says to do:
# apt-get upgrade
# apt-get install linux-image-2.6-686
# apt-get install udev
Then, I rebooted my machine into the new kernel (2.6.32-5-686). I got a ton of udev warning messages at startup (all along the lines of "SYSFS{}= will be removed in a future udev version, please use ATTR{}= to match the event device, or ATTRS{}= to match a parent device, in something-or-other" - details can be provided if needed), but got a functioning prompt. I logged in, ran startx, and everything worked except the mouse, which couldn't do anything - as if it wasn't recognized at all. Switching window managers from Compiz to Metacity, as mentioned before, didn't help. "modprobe psmouse" revealed that that module was correctly loaded.
Rebooting into my old backported kernel (2.6.32-bpo.3-686) restored mouse function, although I still had the udev warning messages (so maybe those aren't relevant, I don't know). Apparently, something about the different kernels is causing the problem, but I'm not sure what - any thoughts? I haven't wanted to complete the upgrade with "apt-get dist-upgrade" without knowing that I'll have a working mouse, since I need a functional GUI at the moment and don't have a good way of fixing it if I trash it.

System was running fine under 8.04 but decided to update. The live CD works fine but after install, the Mouse and Keyboard stop working under 9.10. Even the keyboard power button is off. Disconnecting and reconnecting the keyboard or the mouse does not . AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ PS/2 Keyboard and PS/2 mouse
Everything else seems OK but how would I know without the keyboard or mouse. The keyboard turns off right before the first Ubuntu screen. The Numlock will go off and then nothing. Tried to run dpkg - fix broken packages after booting to repair. All I get is fail to fetch http: (whatever )Could not resolve us.archive.ubuntu.com. Update: Alt-F3 ... then Booting to terminal mode does not disable the keyboard.

I upgraded to 10.10 from 10.04 few weeks ago. Everything was working fine until today when I did a partial upgrade and it removed some of the lib files. Now my usb mouse and keyboard is not working. I can move the mouse around but can't click ( left or right ). I have nvidia graphics card. I tried running it under safe graphics mode and when I do that everything works fine except for the compiz obviously. I have tried reinstalling nvidia driver to see if that would make a difference but that didn't work either. I am not sure which lib files did ubuntu removed. I have searched everywhere to find a solution on the web and the only thing I think it might b iz my xconf file iz messed up. I really don't want to reinstall the whole OS and loose all my apps.

I'm having an issue installing Fedora 11. The install goes fine, but after restarting (when I get to the initial configuration screen) my keyboard and mouse don't work. I can boot into the Live CD without issue. My boot.log file is below:
boot.log:
Code:
Welcome to Fedora
Press 'I' to enter interactive startup.
Starting udev: [OK]
Setting hostname Ste-PC: [OK]
mdadm: failed to add /dev/sda1 to /dev/md/imsm0: No such device or address
mdadm: Container /dev/md/imsm0 has been assembled with 2 drives
mdadm: Started /dev/md126 with 2 devices .....
HAL is failing to start, could that be the issue? If so, how should I go about fixing it?

I tried to upgrade my Ubuntu 10.10 to 11.04 on my netbook. I choose the option to upgrade on the Update Manager. All packages had been downloaded, and the installer was busy to replace all the old packages.
During the update I noticed that my internet stopped working, so I disabled my wifi, so it couldn't interupt the upgrade. After a half an hour, I found out my internet worked again, so I pressed the wifi-button again on my laptop, so the wifi would turn on, but after that move my screen hanged, and the upgrade wasn't done yet. I pressed the powerbutton for 5 seconds, because there was nothing else I could do.. Everything just hanged, no mouse movement, no hard disk activities, just a frozen screen.
After this problem I rebooted, and I already knew what I was going to see, Ubuntu couldn't be loaded anymore (and it still can't).
Is there anybody who can help me to restore my laptop? There are really important things for college on the harddisk in the /home/ folder, but I was too stupid to forget to make a backup.. I mostly make backups of everything you can think of, but I thought it won't be neccessary.. damn..
I know that you can restore files using a live-usb (no cd, because it's a netbook), but I choose during the installation the option to 'encrypt' my documents.. So is it still possible to restore my documents, photo's etc. from the home-folder? I really need to get those things back..
When I try to boot all I get on my screen is the text (in Dutch): 'Disk partition / is not ready or is not found - Keep waiting or press S to cancel mounting, or press M to recover manually' The manual recovery doesn't do anything at all, and by the way, booting in the 'recovery mode' won't work either.
