from Ubuntu 8.04.2, kernel 2.6.24-24-lpia to Ubuntu 8.04.2, kernel 2.6.24-27-lpia Drivers Lost / Missing: Wireless via USB, Printer, Webcam, Sound, etc. No indication whatsoever there would be problems with the upgrade except for the changes in /boot/grub/menu.lst which I merged by hand to avoid problems.
Please advise:
A) What to do next?
B) Where in the Ubuntu bugs do I open this bug?
I did open a bug for this as well:After upgrade to to Ubuntu 8.04.2, kernel 2.6.24-27-lpia all proprietary drivers are gone.Therefore, I cannot use wireless, webcam, sound, usb, etc... making work next to impossible. Does anyone know how to correct this easily and quickly so I am effective at work?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have an ancient laptop, an IBM T-20 with a Pentium 3 and 250 megs of RAM, which works great for blogging and email. I have used Ubuntu on it for nearly four years now. Last night I upgraded from 8.10 to 9.04 and now it won't get to the log-in screen. The BIOS splash screen appears, then the GRUB screen, then the Ubuntu trademark screen appears, with the horizontal progress indicator scrolling from left to right. And when it gets all the way to the right, the screen goes blank. Then the screen flashes twice, as if it's trying to display in a resolution it doesn't support, and then it goes blank again. The HD activity light flashes about every five seconds and the keyboard is unresponsive.

Ive tried Shift+alt+f7, ctrl+alt+f1 and pressing shift on startup. Ive also followed the advice on a help thread on here to edit /etc/default/grub and comment out GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT=00 (except on mine there was only one '0' and it was already commented out!!) and now im completely stuck. Im running in the live CD environment at the moment
Completely new to Ubuntu, basically never used anything but Windows before, hadn't even had a chance to properly test out Ubuntu before I broke it. So, sorry if this question is very easy...or if I'm posting it in the wrong place...
Anyway, I cleverly installed the most recent drivers for my graphics card, and it killed Ubuntu - it won't start now. This happens on Windows, too, but Windows will System Restore for me. How might I fix this in Ubuntu?
I can choose Ubuntu from the grub menu, but then the screen goes blank, the fan on my computer goes into overdrive, and nothing happens.

A quick note for other frustrated Ubuntu users out there. I have a D-Link DWA-510 PCI wireless card (RT61) that just stopped working. After wasting hours searching posts and asking for help, I've determined that there's a problem in the latest Kernel to be rolled out.
I have now installed StartUp-Manager, and used it to boot into the old 2.6.31-22 kernel still on the machine and, hey presto, wireless is working again. It seems like the simplest fix by far.
A kernel update just killed my ATI graphics driver.
Trying to install proprietary graphics driver fails and points at /var/log/jockey.log

I am experiencing the "slow internet" problem (mentioned multiple times in these forums) but it started exactly when I ran an online update, which switched my boot image from vmlinuz-2.6.31.12-0.1 to vmlinuz-2.6.31.12-0.2. Perhaps a setting somewhere got overridden? When the update occurred, grub couldn't find the OS because it had the wrong version #, and I manually edited it (via a livedisk) and that fixed it; it also switched my vga resolution in the grub conf. OpenSUSE is *acting* like ipv6 is enabled again, but ifconfig doesn't report that, and my MTU is close to 1500.
View 6 Replies View RelatedThe latest Kernel update (2.6.35-25-generic) killed all my sound output on my Toshiba Satellite M115.
I tried reinstalling all ALSA components and plugins. No luck there.
Rebooting into 2.6.35-24-generic fixes the problem, in that my sound works again.
I'm a bit sick to my stomach right now. I had a raid5 array (5x1.5TB drives) and I upgraded to lucid and now the array no longer works. Initially, on boot, it would try to mount it from fstab and that failed consistently as it wasn't assembling it.
then I tried to assemble it by hand (--scan) and that seemed to cause it to mount degraded (it seems md in the process tried to use on of the disks for something else!), but when I look at its partition table, it's empty. pretty pissed at the moment (somewhat at myself, didn't really need to upgrade), any ideas what went wrong?
I updated the firefox-next PPA and updated to the new release however, upon doing that, I lost the sound in ALL my browsers. (?) I am using Google Chrome and Chromium as well.I have since downgraded and the problem still occurs.
Edit: I have sound in Umplayer and SMplayer but that's it. Banshee and Guayadeque are silent...
I had screenlets working Just Fine on F 10, but it hit EOL so I used preupgrade to move to F 11. Now, I can't get them working no matter what I do. If I try to run screenlets-manager from a terminal I get this message:

Last night I installed F12 x86_64 from a liveUSB in my laptop with Atheros wireless. During the install process and after the first boot I was able to surf the web connected to the wireless network (signal was good and all). After I updated the whole system, however, the wireless network is no longer available (Network Manager does not even show the Wireless interface or the network list).
Obviously a laptop without wireless is mostly worthless. What am I supposed to do to get my (perfectly working*) wireless network back?

View 1 Replies View RelatedShort of the story is I have an AMD64bit system for my 'server'. I find that there is lacking package support for ubuntu 64bit. Some apps I want to install work fine on 32bit ubuntu but not in 64bit ubuntu. More importantly the 64bit package for my ati drivers don't work, however they do on a 32bit version of ubuntu.
It would make sense to do a fresh install of ubuntu 32bit to avoid problems like this in the future. However my server has been running for years.. since ubuntu6. And it is highly customized. It would take too long to configure my server from scratch, I really want to avoid that. So I'm wondering, next time I do a dist upgrade.. say from 9.10 to 10.04. Is there a way I could trick the update manager in to upgrading to 32bit packages/kernel etc?
So xorg was acting up, and I went into the Hardware Drivers menu to see if the driver had a problem. The driver was disabled, and could not be activated. I downloaded the new ATI driver. I uninstalled the old one, installed the new one, and ran the config step just like it specifies in the install instructions. Upon reboot, I got a blank screen instead of the login screen.I managed to drop back to the command line and uninstall the driver, so now I'm stuck in ubuntu with one monitor instead of 2.
I'm going to attempt to revert to the old ATI driver (which I still have in my home dir), but I wanted to be sure to get this into the forums before I ruined my GUI again.

I'm running the 64 bit version of Ubuntu 9.10 on an AMD64 dual core platform with all the most recent upgrades installed. After the most recent Kernel upgrade version 2.6.31.20 the computer failed to boot correctly. Extremely slow getting to the desktop and a general failure to preload any programs that I load on boot. I had to uninstall and revert back to the previous Linux headers which solved the problem. If it makes any difference I have the machine setup as an apache2 server along with my standard desktop environment.

However, now I cannot seem to be able to remove the old Kernel from 9.10 in the package manager. It does not even show 2.6.32-21 as installed but it still shows the old Kernel in Grub. I wonder if others have upgraded their Lucid kernel using the deb [URL]..repository. I have been using the repository for some time now without any apparent problems, and have gone from 2.6.36-1, through 2.6.37-10, and am now on 2.6.37-12.
All of these seem to work with no problems at all, but I am just wondering if other users can also report success, or if there are any trip-ups that might occur. I still keep updating the "standard" kernel from the main repos, ie 2.6.32-27, so I have that as a backup, but I'm just very curious about other people's findings.
I am running Ubuntu 10.10 on a Lenovo T60 and am having problems waking up from sleep every time I update the kernel.
I just got the upgrade from 2.6.35.25 to 2.6.35.27.
The problem I see now is that I get this message when coming back from sleep (I coped it down since after the message I couldn't do anything else):

I read recently about security flaws in the ubuntu kernel, and when I checked my kernel, it is 2.6.32-29-generic. I looked in synaptic, and I have the linux-generic meta-package - which should ensure upgrade to the latest kernel, and yet this is not being updated when I run update manager. There is a linux-image-2.6.35-25-generic, but the advice is not to install this directly (to avoid breaking dependencies, etc.), but to install the meta-package instead. Yet, the meta-package doesn't seem to be doing what is should do.
