Ubuntu Installation :: Unmount Part Error In 11.04 Install

Mar 15, 2010

I ran the ubuntu 11.04 live CD on my laptop that had an earlier version of ubuntu (9 maybe??). I really liked what I saw so I used the Install ubuntu 11.04 wizard and chose the option to override the earlier version. During the 'Importing document and settings' step a pop-up entitled Failed to unmount partitions. the body stated: migration-assistant needs to mount a partition, but cannot do so because the following mount partition could not be unmounted:

/dev/sda1

The only app showing on the taskbar is the Install. this is running from the live CD.

Ubuntu Installation :: Error Message - Cannot Unmount SDA7

May 1, 2011

I figured I'd set up a test partition to test the waters before jumping head on to a full upgrade. I've created a new ext4 partition on my disk and marked it to be used as root for the install. Halfway through the installation an error message pops up saying it cannot unmount sda7 because it's in use, sda7 has nothing to do with the Natty install, it's the root partition of my main setup! I then aborted, rebooted and everything was fine with my main system, obviously the Natty install didn't take.

Ubuntu Installation :: Boot ISO From One Part Of Drive And Install On Other

Mar 18, 2011

I tried to install ubuntu 10.10 onto an HP laptop and could not get anything to boot apart from windows vista. When I entered the boot options and selected CD to try and load the ubuntu CD it just booted off the HDD repeatedly. I removed (foolishly perhaps) the HDD and formatted it on my other machine, then created a start-up disk for ubuntu on it. I re-installed the hard drive and loaded ubuntu with no problems, but I can't install it. What do I need to do to the HDD (partitions, flags, etc) to make it so I can boot the iso from one part of the drive and install on the other?

Ubuntu :: Error: Unmount Exited With Exit Code 1

Jul 10, 2011

using 'ntfs-config' to make ntfs partitions mount on bootup so that I can access my data partition from Ubuntu. The first time I installed ntfs-config it would not run. I uninstalled and reinstalled it and then it ran, but it didn't seem to be responding very well. I attempted to tick the partition I wanted and set it to be writeable. After I closed the app ALL my ntfs partitions were mounted, even the windows and system reserved partitions, and when I attempted to unmount them I got the following error:

Unable to unmount Data
Error unmounting: unmount exited with exit code 1:
helper failed with
unmount /dev/mapper/isw_dfjjdefcdi_RAID5p4 is not mounted (according to mtab)

I tried rebooting. I tried uninstalling ntfs-config, then reinstalling it (now it wont run again). So I'm at a loss as to what to do. I simply want my data partition mounted on boot up and writable, not the others.

Software :: Stale NFS File Error - Cannot Unmount Drive

Jan 10, 2009

I have Puppy installed on an old laptop and one way or another I ended up with a file inside /usr/bin that has the Stale NFS file error. I've tried to look around for a way to fix it but all places I've looked have only been for the situation where it's on a drive you're able to unmount. At least I think they were. I certainly don't know what I'm doing well enough to know for sure. Obviously restarting the computer has been tried as well as attempting to unmount things, but I can't unmount the drive that is running the unmounting.

Ubuntu :: External Hard Drives - Error "Cannot Unmount Because File System On Device Is Busy"

May 19, 2011

Having problems with external hard drives. I may be wrong, but I suspect they originated with an upgrade to 10.04 last Christmas. Around that time I also started using Amazon's S3 storage system, and, as a consequence, I stopped using my WD 80G external drive, previously used to backup my important files.

A week or so ago I decided to start using the WD drive again. I can't remember exactly what I did, but it wasn't happy - never caused any problems before. When I plug it in, the on-off light as the front keeps flashing on and off, and when I try to remove the drive I get the message: Error unmounting volumne An error occured while performing an operation on "My Book" (Partition 1 of WD 800BB External): The device is busy

Details: Cannot unmount because file system on device is busy Assuming the device had died - it's about 5 years old - I bought a 160G Samsung S-Series drive - my but they do look neat! Unfortunately, this doesn't seem to have solved my problem. I plugged the new drive in, and it happily appeared on my desktop. It seemed a good idea at the time, but I then started to format the drive - using the default option of FAT. All went well at first, but then the format process stopped.

My new Samsung drive now seems to be operating pretty much as the WD device, I can't copy to the drive, and attempts to unmount it generate a response similar to what's happening with the WD drive. Currently, although plugged in, I can't see the drive on my desktop, although it appears under Places. However, when I try to mount the drive, I get the message: Unable to mount SAMSUNG A job is pending on /dev/sdb1

I don't whether it should be called boot.iso, but I hope you get my point.I believe it has got something to do with the "isolinux" folder on the DVD, but I don't know what and how.

Ubuntu :: Packages Part Of Iso Image File Installation

Feb 24, 2010

When I look in /var/cache/apt/archives/, I see packages I recognize that I downloaded. But, I also see packages that I know I did not download, but rather were part of the initial installation of the image iso file on the CD. For example, the package for Abiword is in there. I would like to know which packages in this directory I installed, and which were part of the initial installation.

How do I know which packages are part of the installation from the image iso file on the CD? Once I know that, I would make a copy of all the other packages in this folder onto a DVD, so if I ever need to reinstall Ubuntu 9.10 I will know which packages to install over and above those part of the initial installation off the iso CD.

Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Access Gui Part Way Through Dist-upgrade

May 19, 2010

I am doing a dist-upgrade from 8.04LTS to 8.09. I use usb KVM switch, and I keep my eye on it so that I can respond to the usual configuration file prompts that pop up. For a while everything went fine, but suddenly I find that I can't use the keyboard to log in and check the progress (the mouse is completely unresponsive). Here's the kicker though: the computer is fine. I can use 'Ctrl-Alt F1' through F7, and the computer responds appropriately; it just doesn't do anything when the login screen is up.

I checked the /var/log/dist-upgrade/term.log, and if I understand it correctly, whether or not to keep /etc/mysql/my.conf is currently up for question. Is there any way to take back control of the computer without interrupting the upgrade? Not knowing very much about the install process, it seems like the GUI stopped polling for input.

Fedora :: Win7 Install Changed Part' To Lvm2?

Jun 1, 2010

I've done a search thru the forums on a recent headache but couldn't find anything. now we all know that windows installations knackers the grub boot-up, and it becomes modus-operandi to repair the boot loader, with a live distro. however, in my current dual boot system (vista.sp2/fedora12), i've done a clean install of windows7 over the current windows ntfs partition. as standard, the boot menu would vanish. but when i put in the live-linux cd, gparted now shows the fedora partition (sda6) as LVM2. i'm somewhat of a neophyte with linux, but fedora12, suse11.2 and ubuntu don't seem to yet support this file system. since i don't have critical data on the fedora partition yet, i usually wouldn't mind reformating this part', but the wireless chipset on my laptop cost a fortune on cups of coffee and beer to install, and in addition i used the fedora12 FEL spin and want to keep the installation intact. is there anyway to make the LVM2 indentifier back to ext3 or 4 and repair grub form there (without loosing the current partition kernal etc.)?

OpenSUSE Install :: New Kernel As Part Of Auto Update?

Jan 20, 2010

the normal auto updater ran and installed a new kernel for security vulnerability and it was a .pae version. So after restart I now have 4 options on the boot screen, which includes the normal "SUSE" and a 'SUSE pae" version. defaulted to the new pae version and booted up. I got the video definition not found and had to enter a value manually. The system comes up but not into x system. It gives me a login prompt and startx yields a "terminal not found." Ran SaX2 and startx now works. Unfortunately my KDE desktop is messed up now. There are none of the normal "taskbar" at boot up started processes there. So what should I have done? how do I get my system back to normal and roll out the new kernel and all these changes?

Ubuntu :: Few Errors But It Went By So Fast Could Only Read The "error" Part?

Jul 14, 2011

so what i did first was obviously use wubi to download and install ubuntu. after a 14 minute download, i was finally ready to proceed with the installation. i was excited, however, little did i know the installation would soon be a complete train wreck with little children aboard.here i am, sitting down, rebooting my LAPTOP computer (Acer Aspire 5336, Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU - 900 @ 2.20 GHz 2.19 GHz, 3.00GB RAM, 64-bit operating system -- bought it at walmart because my desktop is still at my parent's house),and then i choose to boot up ubuntu instead of windows 7. everything looks like it goes fine so far.

there were a few errors but it went by so fast i could only read the "error" part. i wait for the installation thingy to show, but it doesn't! the screen goes completely blank after a few more words show up and disappear all in a blink of an eye, so i wait a very long time. it shows a purple screen, and asks me to choose a boot thing or w/e. i choose linux (there were other options like windows 7, linux recovery, i forgot the rest), then it just restarts the computer and i choose ubuntu and it does it again, however it never shows the purple screen!
